How to Match Furniture with Your Home Decor Aesthetic in the UK!
When it comes to creating a home that feels uniquely you, it all starts with your decor style. Whether you're channelling the regal vibes of British sophistication or the sleek minimalism of Scandinavian design, the furniture you choose makes all the difference. If you're looking for the perfect pieces to complete your aesthetic, a furniture store with a wide range of options can be your best ally. Let's dive into five fabulous home decor aesthetics and the ideal furniture pieces to match each one!
1. British Style Home: Classic Elegance Meets Cozy Charm
The Vibe: Think of a charming countryside manor with roaring fireplaces, tea on the table, and timeless elegance. British decor is all about comfort with a dash of sophistication.
Furniture to Love:
Chesterfield Sofa: A classic deep-buttoned, rolled-arm beauty that screams timeless British charm.
Wingback Armchairs: These cozy chairs with their tall backs and "wings" are perfect for sitting by the fire with a good book.
Mahogany Dining Table: Elegant and stately, a mahogany table adds richness to any dining room.
Ottomans: Perfect for putting your feet up in style or adding extra seating
2. Hollywood Glam Aesthetic: Lights, Camera, Glamour!
The Vibe: Think old Hollywood glitz with a modern twist—plush fabrics, sparkling accents, and luxurious finishes. This style is bold, glamorous, and unapologetically opulent.
Furniture to Love:
Chesterfield Sofa or Velvet Upholstered Sofa: For that glam vibe, choose a Chesterfield or a velvet sofa in rich jewel tones. Perfect for lounging like a movie star!
Mirrored Sideboards & Mirror Coffee Tables: Reflect the glamour! Mirrored surfaces catch the light and add a sense of spaciousness.
Black and Gold Accent Italian Beds: Luxurious, dramatic, and made to be the centrepiece of a bedroom that feels like a high-end movie set.
Marble Dining Tables: Sleek, polished, and ultra-luxe, a marble dining table screams sophistication and glam.
3. Scandinavian Aesthetic: Cozy Minimalism for the Soul
The Vibe: Less is more! Scandinavian decor is all about simplicity, functionality, and a connection to nature. It’s the perfect blend of minimalism and coziness (or as the Danish call it, “hygge”).
Furniture to Love:
Oak Coffee Table: Natural wood tones and clean lines make this a staple for any Scandinavian-style living room.
Modular Sofa: Functional, stylish, and comfortable, a modular sofa adapts to your needs while maintaining that minimalist vibe.
Oak Shelving Units: Light wood and open design, perfect for displaying minimal decor and keeping the space airy.
French Style Wooden Sideboards: A touch of French charm adds warmth and character to this otherwise minimalist aesthetic.
4. French Country Style: Rustic Elegance with a Touch of Romance
The Vibe: Picture a quaint French countryside home—elegant but relaxed, with a focus on rustic charm and romantic details. It’s all about soft colours, natural materials, and vintage-inspired pieces.
Furniture to Love:
French Style Wardrobe: Tall, elegant, and beautifully carved, a French wardrobe adds a romantic flair to any room.
Chesterfield Sofa: A crossover with British style, the Chesterfield brings timeless elegance and comfort to the French country look.
French Style Wooden Sideboards: These rustic yet refined sideboards offer storage and style, often with charming details like turned legs or distressed finishes.
Wingback Armchairs: Cozy and inviting, they bring a touch of vintage French sophistication to your space.
5. Modern Aesthetic: Sleek, Simple, and Stylish
The Vibe: Clean lines, bold accents, and minimal clutter. Modern decor is all about creating a space that feels streamlined, functional, and stylish with a focus on open spaces and neutral palettes.
Furniture to Love:
Glass Coffee Table: A sleek, minimal piece that adds a light, airy feel to your living room without overwhelming the space.
Sectional Sofa: A modern must-have, sectional sofas offer comfort and style in one clean package, perfect for lounging or entertaining.
Leather Armchairs: Structured, sleek, and undeniably cool, leather armchairs add a bold touch to modern decor.

William and Julia Dangar are always on the lookout for high visibility properties located on laneways. In a stroke of fate, their business partner from Robert Plumb Build, Bill Clifton, had just bought a house in Bondi, alerting them to the rundown property next door meeting this very description. They soon decided to buy it. ‘We thought we could do a wonderful collaborative couple of buildings sitting together, that we call siblings,’ explains William.
The post-war house was in a state of disrepair at the time of purchase, requiring the majority to be demolished. Only the facade of the semi-detached facade and the original front room have been retained, joined by a contemporary concrete, glass, steel and metal mesh building. Materials were recycled where possible, with all of the bricks from the demolished rear recovered and cleaned on site.
Andrew Burges Architects were engaged to design the home, blurring indoors and out for a perfect Sydney summer experience. The interiors are a collaboration between David Harrison and Karen McCartney, introducing white washed reclaimed brick walls and generous linen curtains, combined with a mix of designer and vintage furniture (including pieces from the couple’s other business, Robert Plumb) and carefully considered lighting. The use of minimal, natural materials creates a simultaneously relaxed and sophisticated aesthetic.
As one of Australia’s leading landscape designers and director of Dangar Barin Smith, the garden was an obvious priority for William. Offsetting the industrial materials of the home are mature trees surrounding the house, along with a range of succulents and cacti on the ground level and first floor roof. The curvaceous form of the extension allows the garden to continue lengthways down the site, accommodating an existing Bismarck Palm, and creating a close connection to the interiors.
Among William’s favourite things about this home are the way it invites the sun in year-round, with beautiful north-east breezes during summer. The family also love the positioning of the home on the site, which opens the property up to its adjoining north-facing laneway. ‘The large kitchen window opens up to the community and allows us to interact with passers by,’ Will explains.
When asked what the biggest challenge of this project was, William says, ‘Controlling the budget, (we didn’t)’ and ‘not over capitalising, (we did).’ Looking at the incredible end result, we have to assume it was all worth it!
With a celebrated career spanning 25 years, William Dangar is one of three esteemed judges in the Landscape Design category of The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards 2020. Entries close next Friday May 15th – learn more here!

Create A Contemporary Ambiance With Modern Home Furniture Design
Three adjectives that would accurately describe contemporary
home furniture design
are modern, simple and current. Though the best way to get a contemporary style home designed is by reaching out to the
best interior designers in Mumbai
still you can follow our simple guide and be a Pro at designing a gorgeous home by yourself. This is if you adore your house having a modern and simple touch while also keeping up with current styles then you adhere to the contemporary school of design. Even though modern design usually adopts a colder and minimalistic design, current contemporary homes are leaning towards a more sophisticated yet comfortable look. These homes are welcoming but without being dark and cluttered. The basic characteristics of contemporary design are simplicity, conspicuous use of texture and clean lines all mixed in with subtlety and sophistication. The main idea or goal of contemporary design is to highlight space rather than things. It achieves this by focusing on elements like colour, space and shape which gives the space a sleek and fresh look.
Characteristics Of Contemporary Style Home Furniture Design:
There is next to none intricate detailing.
Lines of contemporary styled furniture typically should be hard-edged or gently curved.
The finishing of the furniture is not selective so it can be in all tones.
The furniture should make a simple, uncluttered but bold statement.
If the contemporary style is how you want your house to look but are confused about what furniture should be in your house then here a few design ideas that will give your house a contemporary touch as recommended by the best
furniture manufacturers in Mumbai
1. Upholstered Furniture:Upholstery is the work done on furniture, typically seats, to provide padding, springs fabric and leather covers and webbing. The advantage of upholstered furniture is that its long-lasting and required very low maintenance. Since contemporary style, home furniture design focuses a lot on texture, upholstered furniture really brings out the contemporary touch. Getting upholstered furniture in black, white or neutral tones made of natural fibres like wool, cotton, linen, jute and silk really ups the textured feel of your house. 2. Urban Home Furniture Design:This furniture is especially for people dwelling in the city. This is why the furniture is typically smaller in scale but at the same time well designed and elegant. Urban furniture can be characterised by their lack of ornamentation, abundant use of black and a range of bright or primary colours, use of varied materials like metal, glass and light wood, and the furniture has striking lines and shapes. These characteristics make the urban home furniture design high impact even though it is small in scale. For this style use simple window treatments like sheer fabric or sheer blinds. Another modern home furniture design is bookshelves, armoires and storage units that are low in height. You can even incorporate multi-purpose ottomans, storage units etc. Also include colourful area rugs, colourful artwork, and sofas which pop with colour along with bright throw pillows. 3. Basic Background With A Splash Of Colour:In contemporary design, ‘the less is more’ ideology is often used. For example, a basic background is brought out by adding a furniture piece in your favourite colour. This means that both the background and the furniture piece will stand out. However, this does not mean you will add a red rug to a greyscale background. The bright colours should not be jarring but should weave in naturally. A few ideas include adding teal or violet pillows to a cream sofa or matching a brightly coloured rug to a modern painting in the same colour palette. The neutral colours ensure a sense of harmony and contrast and make brighter colours seem more in sync with the rest of the
living room interiors
. 4. Art Deco:This style of design is separated from traditional design with the lack of intricate carvings found in traditional design. Instead, it has elegant lines and curves. It involves the blend of luxurious material with synthetic materials which creates a unique and casual look. Luxurious materials that can be used include mother of pearls, ivory, silver and gold leaf, and lacquers. Synthetic materials include contemporary metals, glass, plastics, resins, and mirrors. Other characteristics include medium-toned wood and mirrored and chromed surfaces. If you want to spruce up your room to give it The Great Gatsby feel then here are some furniture pieces you could add. One characteristic of art deco is it streamlined shapes, for example, angular armchairs. Another characteristic is animal prints so you can incorporate a cowhide rug. Geometric shapes are equally important features of art deco and you can include them through art deco mirrors and make a glamorous statement. The overall feel of your room should be sleek and smooth so opt for sleek materials like a vintage floor lamp or a Hungarian Arts Deco table. 5. Let There Be Light:The clean straight lines and hard edges of the contemporary style can seem severe. However, a blend of different rich textures and lots of sunlight can make the place feel more warm and welcoming. You can achieve this look by having large windows that will let in plenty of natural light. You can also make the abundant use of floor and/or ceiling lights. To give a more welcoming feel, you can dress up creamy hued sofas with light coloured throw pillows. Modern paintings with bright hues also accentuate the light especially if there is a light that is pointed at the painting. 6. Casual Contemporary:This style of contemporary design is the most popular because of its casual and relaxed styled and feel. It is a softer, more updates style that does not adopt the design of the hard edges of the formal mid-century modern style. The look is neutral but the scale is larger than typical contemporary designs. The characteristics of the furniture are rounded and eased edges, medium wood tones, textures like glass and leather and other textured fabrics are featured, and soft and overstuffed surfaces with pillow-topped couches. In this style, you can add a sleek leather sofa, spare tables, creamy hued sofas that are dressed up with bright coloured like pink throw pillows, etc. 7. Smooth Clean Geometric Shapes:Introducing this home furniture design is essential to contemporary style. This design can be reflected in many different ways; the important idea is to accentuate the geometry of the place. For example, in a dining room, nature and geometry can blend in to form a contemporary dining area. For example, hardwoods can be an ode to nature while the sleek tables and chairs lend structure and geometry to the design. If your room is centred around a modern artwork then a good idea is to let the artwork’s geometry echo in the shelving unit and furniture. Let the primary colours of the artwork be infused throughout the space creating symmetry. 8. Retro Style Home Furniture Design:This a more whimsical look from the eras of the 1950s to the 1980s. Even though termed retro today, this style was fashionable modern during its reign in the late 20th century. Few furniture pieces that give a retro feel are modular plastic chairs, Formica topped tables, chrome bar stools and anything that is reminiscent of a diner from the 1950s. Other furniture includes boomerang tables and furniture in the space-age style and pieces with a flavour of pop-culture. You can include the retro style in your home with black and white floor tiles for example in the kitchen, a gossip bench, kitschy wallpaper, a retro danish sofa, and even a record player if you are feeling especially groovy. 9. Mid-Century Modern Home Furniture Design:The mid-century modern style is best characterised by stark and simple designs that sculptural in their look and feel. The ideology used is, ‘ form follows function’. Once again, there is little or no ornamentation but instead, there are sleek and uncluttered lines. There is a combination of traditional like wood with not traditional or synthetic materials like glass, plexiglass, plywood and vinyl. To explore the texture, the materials are juxtaposed against each other. The colour palette is varied and can range from neutral to bold and includes the greyscale. Lightweight thin-framed furniture is big in mid-century modern. You can contrast the brown wood with pops of colour by adding resin or plastic furniture like tulip chairs or a transparent coffee table. An essential for this style is a strikingly simple chair that will stand out beautifully. For storage, it is best to use a modular storage system. Wool rugs in muted fall tones will add rustic texture to the room. You can stylise a sunburst mirror and teak clock or vice versa to create a beautiful gallery wall. 10. Contemporary Style
Bedroom Interiors
:A contemporary style bedroom generally should have clean, straight lines that include an impeccable design which gives a feel of richness and sophistication. You can achieve clean straight lines through a sloped ceiling. Richness can be achieved by velvet throw pillows, for example. You can add tonal textures through the rugs, accessories, and beddings. This adds extra warmth, comfort and even glamour to the room. It is a good idea to avoid accessories that include trims, bed skirts, ruffles, floral patterns, fringe and tassels. Basically, nothing that is cute or small. Its the rule of the three Bs: Basic, Bare and Bold!11. Contemporary Style Kitchen Furniture:Contemporary style in the kitchen usually adopts a pared-down style. This includes having flat-front cabinets and sleek stainless-steel appliances. Textured materials like granite, wood and rattan are often used. A colour palette of greys, neutrals and white is a good idea as it is long-lasting and will give the kitchen a clean look. This can be paired with traditional flooring using natural materials. Getting out storage space is also a good idea as it will keep the surface uncluttered. 12. Contemporary Style Furnishings: These are a few contemporary style extras that you can add to your home after choosing your furniture. A good idea is to go for small elements that add personality and depth to the room.
Lamps: Lamps should typically be metallic with straight lines. Lamps made of steel, nickel and chrome are more fitting in the contemporary style. You can also look for floor or desk lamps that have straight and hard lines instead of soft or curvy designs.
Paintings, vases, stocks of books, sculptures: These are all good and stylish elements that can act as accessories. Paintings should generally be simple with minimalistic colours- think modern art. The vases and sculptures should also have a minimalistic design and use very few colours.
Appropriate natural materials like plants: Some plants that accentuate the contemporary design are large orchids, palms, lilies and tulips. Any plant that has bold textures and architectural shapes can be chosen. These can be kept in a contemporary container to weave it in with the other furniture.
That’s the basic guide to the different furniture pieces that you can add to your home to create a contemporary look. The general idea is to avoid patterns of any kinds like floral, polka dots etc. Choose furniture that has sleek and smooth lines and design and use pieces that are low and towards the ground. Space should also be open and inviting; there should be no clutter.Basically, your furniture should embody simplicity, sophistication and subtlety. Jewel Tone Colors in a Contemporary Two-Bedroom Apartment [With Floor Plan]
If you’re on the search for versatile color accents, jewel tone palettes tend to remain flattering throughout every season. This contemporary apartment by Shubochkini Architects starts with a base of powerful neutrals with walls divided into light and dark grey, softened by monochromatic textiles layered throughout. Select jewel tones use this subdued canvas to their advantage – the eye immediately drawn to every pop of emerald, sapphire, and citrine. Find fresh color palette inspiration and explore this gem of an interior concept through the captivating visualizations below.
This tour begins with a glimpse of the living room, the landscape centered around a modern sofa that captures attention with elegant emerald upholstery. A color like this can be subtle in other contexts – but in a space dominated by such stark neutrals, it becomes a beacon and anchor for the entire space.
Of course, even the neutral elements deserve appreciation. The furniture and décor selections draw from a vocabulary of iconic designs. Here you see the famous AJ floor lamp by Arne Jacobsen.
Natural elements also play an important role. Interactive spaces enjoy the warmth of natural wood, like the chevron floors and partial wall in the living room.
With limited seating in the living room, this accent chair makes a mark with its sculptural shape. This piece is the classic Swan Chair originally designed by Arne Jacobsen.
Classic meets modern in this spectacular dining room. The decorative wall paneling embraces a vintage look, updated by the smooth Creed dining chairs from Rodolfo Dordoni.
Beautiful dining room pendant lights by Jaime Hayon hang in a row above the table. Not only do these create a focal point against the emerald green wall, they also provide a soothing mood light alternative to the primary recessed lights.
Such a distinctive combination of elements calls for unique tableware to tie the themes together. A gorgeous stone fruit bowl brings out the color of the accent wall.
Lovely glass vases in amber continue the natural palette.
While a television would ordinarily make a formal dining room feel more casual, this one benefits from the flush mount installation and border of decorative trim.
Black chair legs and pendant bodies ensure the television does not break the color palette. This is one example of how small details can have far-reaching implications.
Adjacent to the living room, you’ll find a comfortable kitchen that feels endless thanks to its generous floor-to-ceiling window.
Natural materials again make a statement here. Grey stone cladding spans the full-wall backsplash while vertical wood grain creates a seamless continuation between countertop and cabinetry.
These sleek kitchen bar stools are the work of Danish furniture designer Hee Welling.
Not only does the kitchen host ample storage space within the large cabinets, it also offers a stylish cutout for decorative display or easy access to essentials.
Stainless steel unites the hardware for a professional and streamlined appearance.
Dual-tone coloration and decorative paneling give the hallway subtle decorative appeal.
What could go better with jewel tones than a touch of tasteful metallics? This brilliant decorative wall mirror glimmers with gold, accented by a gorgeous designer vase alongside. This space is tucked into the entrance along the hallway.
In the master bedroom, the jewel tones take on a more subdued look. This blue bedroom embraces a muted sapphire hue – classic, calming, and a brilliant way to elevate the neutral furniture theme.
On the wall-mounted vanity, a decorative vase holds a spray of yellow flowers that stand in bold contrast to the blue wall behind it. The designer table lamp is from the ABALLS Collection by Jaime Hayon – the same line as the pendant lights found back in the dining room.
Small bedside tables are stylish yet offer less room for essentials. This gorgeous swing arm wall lamp provides focused adjustable lighting, a step above the traditional bedside table lamp.
Using diverse textures and patterns can soften the look of any space.

The smaller bedroom uses space with inspiring efficiency.
While the wrap-around headboard allows this bed to double as a chaise, it also creates separation between the sleeping area and workspace.
The famous Beat collection by Tom Dixon works well anywhere in the home – here, a pair of the Tall model serves as stylish bedroom pendant lights.

The wall-mounted console provides storage for media and accessories. In this room, the jewel tones are more subtle – the verdant plant, the citrine and aqua prints.
A full shot of the entryway reveals an excellent combination of utility and style. A seating bench with storage rack offers a convenient place to remove shoes, hooks hold scarves and handbags, and the spacious wardrobe features one mirrored door so residents can make sure their outfits look great before a night out.
Natural themes and neutral palettes define the master bathroom. A quick tour reveals a range of enviable features that promote relaxation and reinvigoration.
Among the natural elements are surfaces of stone and wood. Decorative details include small ornamental trees in marble planters, and organic accents like the unique laundry baskets.
Fixtures remain uncomplicated so the surrounding materials can take center stage.
In a space that lacks luxurious amounts of storage, the in-vanity drawers offer a place to hide away essentials.

Q: What's New at Vintage Home Boutique?
A: Four gorgeous pieces of authentic mid-century storage and seating.

Below are details on these 4 new pieces of mid-century furniture available at Vintage Home Boutique.
This spectacular 3 section Mid-Century Teak royal system wall unit by Poul Cadovius has everything a person could ask for. Completely modular, the individual shelves and storage units are adjustable allowing you to create the combination which works most effectively for you. The upright structure is comprised of 4 solid teak rods which mount directly to your wall. The shelf brackets are the original solid brass. Incredibly elegant and open, the unit provides endless storage options while keeping a sense of openness in the room. Wonderfully narrow at only 16 inches in depth for the largest box, you can use this in your living room, den or even the dining room as a sideboard. The versatility and extra storage it provides is phenomenal.
This Mid-Century Modern walnut 6 drawer wide dresser with was manufactured in the early 60's. Single owner who cared for it greatly. Gorgeous dark walnut colour and patina. The handles are lip shaped and set into the the top of the drawer fronts. Giving it a clean, streamlined look. The entire item is solid wood with a walnut veneer. Each of the 6 drawers is made of solid oak and dove tailed. In the top left drawer sits a jewelry storage container. This item sits raised up on 4 solid walnut legs. It is a gorgeous piece that will work well almost anywhere in you home: bedroom, hall, foyer or a living room. Given the proportions it could also be ideal for a media centre or a vanity conversion.
A gorgeous Mid-Century walnut side table with 2 drawers by Pepplers from 1969. Manufactured in Hanover, Ontario. Pepplers was a Canadian fine furniture maker which produced some exceptional items in the 1950's - 1970's. These tables are a great example of this craftsmanship coming out of Ontario in this period. The table has a generous sized solid wood top with a gorgeous, thick walnut veneer. 2 dove tailed, solid wood drawers provide ample storage space on the bedside table. Sitting raised up on 4 solid walnut legs provides a sense of openness and ease of cleaning. Use this in a bedroom and have ample space for all your needs. It would also be equally comfortable in a living room. Providing a great space to rest your wine glass and books.
An elegant Mid-Century Modern African Teak 3-seat sofa. Dating to the mid 60's this sofa epitomizes the wonderful design style and craftsmanship of Danish Modern furniture. An organically shaped, solid African teak frame curves softly to envelope the body perfectly. With a gorgeous open, flat spindle back. This sofa is equally comfortable against a wall or as the showpiece in the centre of your room. The arms flair, curve and angle perfectly to the body in a design reminiscent of Ole Wanscher. The entire frame has been carefully sanded and oiled to bring out the beauty of the wood. The price includes a new single seat and back cushion running the length of the sofa.
This wall treatment is especially engaging. The color from the accent wall overlaps the corner, while the closet door slices right through the boiserie – the result is playful and slightly surreal.
Continuing the rug pattern from the living room ensures a continuous visual flow throughout the interior.
Sliding closet doors accommodate the limited clearance between wall and furniture. Inside, smart organization maximizes space – drawers on the bottom, racks in the middle, and varied shelves above.

Splurge, Save, Steal: Under $500 Home Essentials
In most homes, people either gather in the kitchen or the living room so make them welcoming. You can pick up furniture essentials like sofas, dining tables and more on the Apartment Therapy Marketplace for less than $500. Because I know a good deal when I see one, I've scoured the latest listings to bring you a few items that'd save you money as well as those worth the splurge.
Not all butcher block tables are created equal but this vintage butcher block table is worth its hefty price. Constructed with steel legs and steel rods that run through the 3-inch thick tabletop, there's no doubt it can handle anything you throw at it. The wood inlayed on the ends gives it a polished appearance. Available on Apartment Therapy Marketplace, $500.
Squeeze a few more seats around this pedestal dining table and you've got yourself a dinner party. Made of solid wood and painted a whimsical lilac hue, the 48-inch table is originally from Pottery Barn. You'd be hard-pressed to find a new table that comfortably (and more intimately) sits six for a Ben Franklin. Available on Apartment Therapy Marketplace, $100.
Don't let first impressions fool you, this Danish sectional has some good bones. Sure the cushions need substantial work but this listing is a real steal. The frame is in solid condition and you can use the rest of your budget on new foam cushions. Use this multi-functional seating as either one 98-inch-long sofa or as two sectionals. Available on Apartment Therapy Marketplace, $350.
