rare epic mother au content! it's been a hot minute...
to take the role of the animatronics in epic mickey, pokey would've brought the robots left behind in the cave of the past. he'd get andonuts to 'reconstruct' them and give 'em "life."
...they, uh, had to work with what they had.
Tumblr media
at first, ninten found no use for them. yeah, he was jealous of ness, but unlike oswald, he already had friends of his own.
he decided to make them clean up around what was left of 'america', now a wasteland.
...yet, he'd find himself chatting to them when he got lonely.

Do you have any headcanons on how Public Domain is seen by Toons? I envision that as ... retirement: on January 1st, there's a big party in which the "Public Domainers" receive a gold watch and a plaque thanking them for their service. After that, they're free to go around Toontown to either rest and relax and fulfill their own dreams. Some even came back to the scenes (case in point: Daffy I, the super-silly one from the origins, that came back to Warner Bros after The Looney Tunes Show)
The "Swirly D" (heh, no names given here) scared the actors, telling them that if they ever went into Public Domain, they'd be left alone with their old arch-enemesis (Fleischer Brothers actors) and "those [religious slur] disrespectful know-it-alls" (Looney Tunes). So "Double M" saw many of his friends and siblings finally going into Public Domain and enjoy their newfound freedom missing them dearly ... (is this too "schmalzily-heartwrenching"?)
So...I'm only responding to the first paragraph because I didn't understand the second [Swirly D?].
All of the Toons are trademarked, so they can't really be used outside of Disney/Looney Tunes. As found out when I googled if Mickey is in the public domain. 'Trademark and Rights: While the copyright has expired, Disney still holds the trademark on Mickey as a “corporate mascot and brand identifier.” Creators will not be able to produce any work that deceptively fools consumers into thinking their Mickey is affiliated with Disney. The company will actively safeguard against unauthorized uses of Mickey and other iconic characters'
So basically Mickey can be used but VERY limited. So, did he have a celebration? Yes! Like other Toons who enter the public domain, he got a letter from the head of his company at the time and had a party.
I don't know if anyone's seen pictures of the parties after the war, but it was that kind of thing. A day of work for the Toons [Disney Toons only] and a buffet that stretched out for infinity. Mickey himself mainly left the other Toons to their own devices, but he did have a celebration in his house [Well, mansion] with Minnie, Goofy, Max, Donald, Huey, Dewey and Lewie as well as Oswald and Ortensia. He also invited Bugs, Daffy, Porky and Elmer. [He gets on quite well with Bugs, if you invite Bugs you've got to invite Daffy. The two of them basically dragged Porky and Elmer along, figuring Mickey wouldn't mind. Luckily he didn't.

Happy 125th Birthday Joe Dougherty
Tumblr media
The original voice of Porky Pig!
Tumblr media
Ah, yes! Before Mel Blanc did Porky, there was Joe Dougherty, who, unlike Blanc, ACTUALLY stuttered!
This was part of Friz Freleng’s intention, as when he given the opportunity to direct the landmark Merrie Melodies short I Haven’t Got A Hat (1935), he decided to give Porky a stutter to differ the character from other cartoon characters of the time who commonly spoke with falsetto voices (Mickey Mouse, Bosko, Buddy). Friz called Warner’s casting for any actor that actually stutter, and that someone turned out to be Joe Dougherty.
Tumblr media
Dougherty would voice Warner Bros. first cartoon star for about 12 shorts from 1935 to 1937, along with some additional one-shot characters in the Merrie Melodies shorts (Into Your Dance (1935), I Love to Singa (1936) to name a couple).
The reason his voice acting career ended quickly was due Dougherty was unable to control his stutter, leading to long hours in voice recording session, increasing budget issues, in addition to overuse of sound-on-film that was used back then, instead of tape. Dougherty’s final voice of Porky was Porky’s Romance (1937) directed by Frank Tashlin.
Well, I had trouble with, Porky, because he stuttered, and a lot of people said, "you can't do that". That's why I did it, because everybody was using falsetto voices, everything sounded the same. And I said, what can I do to make this character different? So I called up Warners' casting and said, do you got anybody who stutters? And they had this [Joe] Dougherty guy, who stuttered, and the guy could not just get through a line. And we were doing all of our sound on film then, there wasn’t any tape. If Jack Warner knew how much film I was using, I was through with animation. So I had to get somebody to mimic, and that was Mel [Blanc]. And of course, Mel can do anything. - Friz Freleng (”Friz on Film” documentary)
Of course, there is also a recently discovered story that in between Dougherty and Blanc, was Count Cutelli, who was said to work closely with Termite Terrace Warner Bros. cartoon producer, Leon Schlesinger and Disney.
Tumblr media
Cutelli did the voice of Disney’s own Mickey Mouse, he would did some additional lines for Porky Pig to cut down costs.
Jim Korkis claims that Cutelli did the famous “That’s All Folks!” tag featuring Porky
Anyways, what do you people think of Mr. Dougherty himself? Do you believe he did a better Porky did Blanc did? Or was Blanc THE better Porky?

I’ve decided to purchase a VCR, and am scouring the internet for cartoons to play it on. But I want to know the stories behind all these bootlegs and their hideous covers. They look like they’ve seen Hell and are coming back to warn us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note I’ve purchased a Region 4 player, and these are mostly Region 1. So even if I did purchase them, all I’d get is grey lines and distorted audio, which given these covers, might actually be the preferred viewing experience.

This is a late night THC induced idea of a ship but I just have to for Off the Animation Table
What if in a Who Framed Roger Rabbit World Mickeys in a poly relationship with Bugs while Minnie's is Daisy. Daffy has Porky and possibly Petunia,
Would make sense how they would have stayed together for so long, like a whole century. I'm sorry, but that would be legendary, but for a relationship to last, that long would be difficult.

Something a little different: Playing through a fascinating, difficult, and bizarre Cuphead ripoff based around the newly-public domain "Steamboat Willie", and numerous characters from other already-public domain cartoons. See how many (badly traced) elements from different PD classics YOU can spot! Molly Moo Cow, anyone?

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988, USA)
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Writers: Jeffrey Price & Peter S. Seaman (based on the book by Gary K. Wolf)
Mini-review:
Look, I know this movie is a classic and it has had a huge impact on pop culture, but for some reason, I never got around to watching it. Until last night. And now I regret not watching it sooner. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is funny, thrilling and surprising. It was released almost 40 years ago, and yet, it still feels astoundingly groundbreaking. In a way, it made me realize that production values have gotten seriously worse in recent movies. Here, all the sets and costumes look gorgeous and completely real. You can tell they barely used green screens (except for the Toontown scenes, obviously). Sure, some of the interactions between the live-action actors and the animated characters look a bit iffy, but all things considered, they managed to pull off a pretty crazy concept that shouldn't work as well as it does here. My only complain is that sometimes I couldn't understand what the animated characters were saying, but it might have been because of my TV or the D+ platform, I don't know. So, I loved this and I'm glad I finally watched it.
