Stars and Strips
GYPSY Crescent Theatre, Birmingham, Sunday 12th May 2024 They’re an ambitious lot at the Crescent.  I’ll say that in their favour from the off.  Now they’re tackling this mammoth of a musical, which brings its own challenges: the many locations, the large cast of characters, and the musical numbers. Ostensibly the origin story of burlesque star, Gypsy Rose Lee, it’s really the story of her…

How To Get Away With Murder Master List
This series is complete! ✔️
My name is Cheyanne Harkness, and I am the daughter of Annalise Keating and Evelyn Rothlo.  And sometimes I wish I could go back to the good old days when my moms were struggling lawyers, making their name within the cut-throat judicial world.
Because at least then I had them both.
Tumblr media
Until Sam Keating ripped my mom, Annalise, away from our family.  And then she pulled me with her, forcing me to leave behind the world I loved and knew in New York.  Forcing me to leave behind my other mom; Eve.
But ever since she got the job at Middleton, and became the world-renowned cut-throat boss bitch, I’ve been feeling a little neglected.  So I forced myself to become interested in their jobs…and years later, I found myself in their shoes.
Only, my hopeless relationship is more star-crossed than Romeo and Juliet.  And despite Frank Delfino and I having a daughter together…somehow it feels like we’re doomed to a similar fate.
Especially now that my mom’s newest group of interns includes 5 students.
Tumblr media
Laurel Castillo.  Wes Gibbins.  Asher Millstone.  Michaela Pratt. Connor Walsh.
And certainly not since they killed my step-father; Sam Keating.  Now, I’m living my mother’s introductory course:  How To Get Away With Murder.

Rade Serbedzija and Robbie Kay in Fugitive Pieces (Jeremy Podeswa, 2007)
Cast: Stephen Dillane, Rade Serbedzija, Rosamund Pike, Ayelet Zurer, Robbie Kay, Ed Stoppard, Rachelle Lefevre, Themis Bazaka, Nina Dobrev, Diego Matamoros. Screenplay: Jeremy Podeswa, based on a novel by Anne Michaels. Cinematography: Gregory Middleton. Production design: Matthew Davies. Film editing: Wiebke von Carolsfeld. Music: Nikos Kypourgos.
Jeremy Podeswa's Fugitive Pieces, adapted by the director from a novel by Anne Michaels, takes as its subject the experience of "survivor guilt." Its protagonist, Jakob Beer (played as a child by Robbie Kay and as a man by Stephen Dillane), escapes from the Nazis but loses his family in the Holocaust. He is rescued by Athos Roussos (Rade Serbedzija), a Greek archaeologist who was working in Poland on a dig and discovered Jakob hiding in the woods. Somehow -- the film is unclear on exactly how -- Athos smuggles Jakob out of Poland to his home in Greece, and after the war the two emigrate to Canada, where Athos has been invited to teach. Jakob grows up haunted by his childhood trauma, and his first marriage, to a woman named Alex (Rosamund Pike), ends when she reads his journals and discovers what a barrier Jakob's experiences have created between them. Jakob is particularly tormented by the loss of his sister, Bella (Nina Dobrev), a talented musician, who often appears in his dreams. Even after publishing a book about his life, Jakob doesn't fully overcome the past until after the death of Athos, whose wisdom he comes to appreciate with the help of another woman, Michaela (Ayelet Zurer). There is a subplot involving the Jewish couple across the hall from Athos and Jakob in Canada, whose son, Ben (Ed Stoppard), grows up hating his father, a Holocaust survivor, for his harshness: The father, for example, berates Ben for not finishing the apple he has been eating, reminding him how grateful people in the camps would have been for the food. Despite excellent performances from everyone, the film sinks too often into sentimentality and stereotypes: Serbedzija's performance is a standout, but he can't overcome the fact that Athos, though a university professor, is presented as too much the wise and kindly peasant-sage, preaching the value of ties to the earth. There are some major gaps in the narrative, like the journey from Poland to Greece, and some overall shapelessness, and the ending is much too pat.

ARE YOU THE MOLE?
SEASON SIX, EPISODE NINE
Masterlist
Tumblr media
"I CAN'T FIND MY KEYS," Michaela complained. April, who was standing the closest to her, turned to look at her.
"They're in your hands." Michaela chuckled when she looked down and saw that she was holding them. They were wearing their graduation gowns and caps.
"Hello, is the FBI in there?" Connor called out.
Michaela finally managed to unlock the door. "That joke wasn't funny the first time," she told Connor, annoyed.
Michaela opened the door. "Everyone chug," Asher said. He gave the orange juice to April as they walked in. They were hoping the organs juice would sober them up— they were high.
"Why do we want this feeling to end?" Oliver walked in last and closed the door. They were carrying grocery bags.
"I just want to feel normal," Michaela muttered, taking the orange juice from April. Her phone started ringing.
"FBI?" Connor asked. He was no different now than when he was sober, except now he was thinking out loud.
"Unknown caller."
"Maybe it's Peyton ready for round 2." They went to the kitchen. Michaela declined the call.
"April did give Peyton my number instead of her own." Michaela looked over at April with a slight glare.
April was sitting by the counter. She shrugged. "She's lucky I didn't knock out her fake teeth."
"Only 'cause I stopped you," Asher said.
"Can we talk about what happened right after that?" Oliver asked. He was the most out of it.
"No," Michaela deadpanned.
"Why don't you just say yes?"
"I'm high, not insane."
"Ouch," Connor muttered. Michaela's phone started ringing again.
Michaela looked at her phone. "Now they're FaceTiming me." They all glanced at each other, wondering who this could be. "I'm just gonna answer."
Connor stepped forward. "Michaela, no."
But Michaela didn't listen. And she answered the call. "Hello?" The phone was glitching. The rest gathered to see who this person was.
They were shocked when the phone stopped glitching, and a face appeared. "It's me, Michaela."
"Laurel?!"
"Oh, my god," Connor mumbled.
"Are we hallucinating?" Oliver questioned.
They hadn't seen Laurel in a very long time, and she was calling. "Just— okay, listen."
"Are you the mole?"
"No! It wasn't me, I swear," she told Michaela. "I would never turn you guys in, okay? But, obviously, someone else did."
REWIND; 10:03 am
"You're all wondering why I called you here today," Annalise started. Her students on their seats, paying attention. "You passed your final exam. Tomorrow, you graduate. But I had to say something before we part way for good."
"I know that you all ask yourselves why I'm still here, teaching, considering the hot mess my life has been the last three years. Well, the answer is simple— you."
"No one should be falsely accused of crimes they didn't commit. But it happens to people far worse off than me. And here's where you come in. I teach so that some of you will make sure that the Justice system lives up to its name. Even though I know that most of you will sell out and do corporate, some of you— the brave ones— will forge your own path, a path that doesn't put money or greed or glory first, but your clients."
"So think hard about who you want to be because, in 24 hours, you graduate, and you'll be free of me... free from Middleton... free from your families. So, whoever you decide to be, make yourself proud."
"That was a drunk speech," Connor muttered. They entered the house.
"Yeah," Michaela agreed. "That was a get lost and be nothing like me because my life's a huge disaster speech."
"Annalise gave a speech?" Oliver asked. He was sitting on the couch in the living room.
"Yeah," Connor replied. "She basically told us to go out into the world and be good people."
"Drunk speech," April added. "A good drunk speech."
"On that note, I have gifts." Oliver handed each of them a small box.
"Oooh! Tiny puppies?" Asher gushed.
"No. It's better. Open up."
April opened her gift, and she was surprised by what she saw, especially because it was from Oliver. "Wow," she chuckled. "I was not expecting this."
"What is it?" Michaela asked, confused.
"Are we taking a cooking class, Oli?" Asher asked Oliver.
"They're shrooms," Connor stated.
"They're psilocybin mushrooms that can heal psychic wounds— you know, like, from the last three years," Oliver informed.
"Or unlock all of the deeds that we've worked very hard to bury."
"Okay, which is it?" Michaela asked, glancing between Oliver and Asher.
"Asher's wrong. I'm right. It'll be fun...gi." Oliver chuckled at his own joke.
Connor didn't seem to like the idea. "We're supposed to meet my mom for dinner soon."
"I texted her and told her I was taking you out for dinner, and she should just meets us here tomorrow before the ceremony."
"Looks like you've got it all covered," April said. She was holding the mushroom. "Are we doing this or what?"
"Yes, that's the spirit!" Oliver cheered.
"Screw it!" Michaela declared, wanting to do it as well.
"Yeah, what the hell?" Connor mumbled. A little wouldn't hurt.
"Bon voyage."
꧁ ꧂
"YOU CAN'T FIND HER?" Michaela was standing with her arms crossed, gazing at Bonnie and Frank. They were all in the living room of the house.
"She went to the dean's party," Frank replied.
"Or she took off," Connor muttered. He went to stand next to April.
Bonnie seemed frustrated, and they couldn't really blame her for that. "Annalise is the one with her name spread all over the news. If anyone gets to panic here, it's her."
"How do we know she's not the informant?"
Frank quickly shut the idea down. "Shut the hell up." He knew Annalise more than the students did.
"She gave a cheesy goodbye speech this morning."
"This could be anyone." Frank was not happy that Connor was trying to put the blame on Annalise. "Xavier's making crap up."
"Gabriel?" Michaela asked.
"One of you?" Bonnie shot back.
"It's obvious who it is," Asher spoke up. "Laurel." Frank narrows his eyes at him.
Oliver let out a laugh, quickly covering his mouth with his hands. They all looked at him. "Oliver," April scolded him.
"I'm sorry," Oliver laughed. "I know it's not funny."
Frank frowned. "What's wrong with him?" He pointed at Oliver.
"He took mushrooms," Connor stated.
"We all did," April added.
Frank gave them a look of disapproval. "Morons."
"They're not working on the rest of us," Connor said in an attempt to defend himself.
Michaela was holding her head. "Not true." She sighed. "Oh, no. I think the panic sped up the digestion, and, yeah, it's working." She took a seat. "And I don't like it. I don't like it at all. I hate you, Oliver."
Oliver was still laughing. "Just— stay here," Frank ordered them and turned to leave with Bonnie.
April followed them to the door. "Why didn't you guys tell me about Miller?" She could feel the mushroom starting to take effect.
Frank and Bonnie glanced at each other. "You've been through enough already," she told April.
"What's done is done," Frank added. "Go back to your friends." He then left along with Bonnie.
꧁ ꧂
"ALRIGHT. BUDDY SYSTEM. No man left behind." Asher waved his arm, letting the other walk past him in the aisle. They were at the store, looking for something sweet to eat.
April and Michaela were looking for candy. "This." April grabbed a small bag of sweets. "My favorite." She smiled brightly as she opened it right there.
Michaela laughed as she watched April struggle with opening the bag. "Aren't you supposed to be a genius?"
April laughed with her. "I am?" The laughter soon died down.
"Oh, my god." April and Michaela straightened up and saw Peyton standing there. She looked surprised to see them.
"Oh, my god," April mocked her.
"Sorry, I just... well, I thought you all might be somewhere else," Peyton explained with a shrug. "Like jail."
April gave a fake chuckle, approaching Peyton. "For what?" Her smile dropped. "For beating your ass?"
"Hey, there's no need for that." Asher pulled April back. "We're all friends here."
Peyton ignored Asher. "I'll tell Gabriel you said hi." She turned and left.
April growled and stepped toward her but was stopped by Asher. "Okay. No, no, no. We're not doing that." He pulled her back to the group, and she started eating her candy again, calming down.
They were shocked when the phone stopped glitching and a face appeared. "It's me, Michaela."

"How do you know about any of this?"
"I saw the news."
"How?" Asher asked, still shocked. "W-where are you?"
"Listen, I can't say in case my brother's listening."
"Laurel, you ruined our lives."
"I'm sorry, okay?" Laurel told Michaela. "But someone who knows everything turned on you. And I swear on Christopher's life, it wasn't me."
Oliver was unsure. "How do we know that Christopher's still alive?"
"He's right here." Laurel pinned the camera down, revealing Christopher.
"Oh, my god," Michaela muttered under her breath. Laurel put the camera back on herself again.
"How do we know that the FBI didn't put you up to this?" Connor questioned.
"They didn't."
"But they're who helped you disappear, right? Y-you're in witness protection?"
"No."
"Christopher didn't crawl out of this house on his own. Someone had to help you do all this."
"I did," April stated. They turned to her, shocked by the revelation. "Tegan and I helped Laurel disappear."
"It's true," Laurel told them. "They helped me. And I'm not the informant, I swear. Okay?"
"We don't believe you!" Connor snapped at her.
"I love you all." Laurel hung up.
"Tegan's not answering." Michaela put her phone away.
"Maybe she's the mole," Asher stated. "Or Laurel."
"It's not Laurel," April told him, starting to get annoyed by that theory. She had always been loyal.
"It's probably Annalise," Connor said. "The goodbye speech, the whole Snow White and the murderous dwarfs exam. It's her. She's the informant."
"It doesn't make any sense," April argued. "I mean, everything would lead back to her. It would make her a bigger suspect to the police and the FBI."
"It makes more sense that it's Tegan," Asher said, somewhat siding with April. "Or Gabriel. Or your mom," he said to April.
"Gabriel doesn't know anything."
"Neither does my mom," April added after Connor. She was looking at Asher, just like Michaela was. They both thought he was acting weird.
"It's Annalise," Connor went back to that. "She's doing what she should've done the night with Sam."
"Fine," Asher gave in. "Maybe you're right," he told Connor. "Maybe it's AK."
"It's not Annalise," April stated. She was staring at Asher. "But you knew that."
Michaela spoke up, siding with April. "It's why you didn't take the mushrooms. You were probably scared you'd reveal something."
"It's not me," Asher insisted.
Connor seemed to believe April and Michaela. "You do keep pointing your finger at everyone else."
"This is how these stupid leaks work. They get us all paranoid, so we turn on each other. And then all the hard work we did to have each other's backs, to be loyal, to trust each other— that goes out the window the second we all turn on our own, okay? We're family. You're my family. I would never... I wouldn't...," he trails off.
April crossed her arms. "Tell us the truth, Asher." Michaela seemed especially hurt by this. She was tearing up knowing one of her closest friends turned on her. "It's you."
Asher seemed regretful. Taking his time to answer because he knew how they would react. They were not going to trust him anymore. He ruined the relationship he had with the people closest to him. "Yeah," he breathed out— confirming their theory.
"And I know that Karen has been working with them too. That's why she was released early. Look, the good thing is, I-I haven't given the FBI anything concrete yet," Asher cried.
April looked at him, feeling betrayed. And maybe that was why she was tearing up, or perhaps it was the mushrooms. She didn't know, but the feeling of betrayal or overwhelming.
"That's— that's why they haven't arrested any of us. Everything we saw on the news about— about them thinking that more than one person was involved in Sam's murder? That's all stuff that they suspected before. I promise, I never got anyone on record saying anything—" Asher was cut off mid-sentence when he was hit in the back of the head with a fire poker. This knocked him unconscious— his body fell to the ground.
"Why did you do that?" Michaela asked, freaked out. Oliver was standing by Asher with the fire poker in his hand.
"I don't know, I don't know, I don't know."
"Someone check if he's dead."
April kneeled next to Asher and checked his pulse. "He's fine." He was bleeding from his head. She was keeping an eye on him, trying to ignore the arguing coming from the other three in the room.
"Guys!" April interrupted their bickering when she noticed Asher opening his eyes.
Michaela kneeled next to him. "Asher?" Oliver kept apologizing for what he did. "Are you okay?"
Asher blinked a few times, adjusting to the light. "I'm calling an ambulance."
"No, no, no, no," Asher protested. "I'm good." He touched the back of his head. His hand got stained with blood, and he wiped it on his shirt.
"Get a towel," Michaela told Connor, who left to get one. "It's probably a scalp wound. Those— those bleed a lot."
April got up. "Excuse me," she mumbled before leaving the house.
Connor and Michaela walked out to the porch and saw April sitting there alone. She looked calmer, and the mushrooms had almost passed through her system. They sat next to her.
"Maybe he's right," Connor said after a brief pause.
"You think so?"
"What choice do we have?"
"I'm not making this decision on shrooms."
April then spoke up. "We have at least two hours before we have to line up."
Connor and Michaela turned to her. He looked at her with a frown, not understanding why she was bringing that up after what happened with Asher. "Are you kidding me?"
April turned to them. "I don't know about you, but I'm graduating."
Michaela nodded, siding with April. "Me too. That's who I am— a brilliant, come-from-nothing badass boss who's not going to let some stupid boy or the FBI get in her formidable way."
"Asher?!" They heard Oliver yell. The three got up and went back inside, wondering what was happening. "Asher?!"
"Where is he?" Michaela asked, running over to Oliver.
"I went to get a fresh towel, and he's gone," Oliver explained. The back door was open.
Oliver had cleaned the floor. "See? Clean as a whistle, like it never happened."
"It happened."
Michaela made her way down the stairs. "We're not talking about that today."
"Right." Oliver looked at his friends, who were all ready to graduate. "You look great."
"We look like ass," Connor deadpanned.
"Looking like ass is better than not graduating at all," April stated. She was sitting on the couch, still thinking about Asher. She looked tired. There was a knock on the door. "Great."
"Pam's early. Twenty bucks says her first question is where is Asher?" Connor went to answer the door, and it was not Pam.
"Are you Connor Walsh?" The woman at the door asked. April went and stood next to Oliver and Michaela.
"Yeah."
The woman walked past him with two men behind her. "Michaela Pratt and April Coleman?"
April and Michaela glanced at each other confused. "Yes," they replied.
"You three are under arrest for murder." The students started arguing with them— why were they under arrest? Why was this happening now?
The woman put cuffs on April— Connor and Michaela were also being handcuffed. "Wait! Who died?!" April demanded. She looked the woman dead in the eyes.
"Asher Millstone," the woman answered. The answer shocked them. Asher left the house alive, so why were they being arrested? April was speechless.
"This is a big misunderstanding!" Oliver called out after them. The students were dragged out of the house by the agent and the officers.

FLASH FORWARD
There was memorial service sometime in the future, and there was a big crowd. A woman was standing in front of them, sharing kind words about the departed. A man, who resembled Wes to a T, made his way through the crowd. He wanted to be at the front and perhaps share a few words.

How to Get Away with Murder
Tumblr media
Genres: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller,
Favorite Character: Annalise Keating, the brilliant, passionate, creative and charismatic Criminal Law professor
Favorite Quote: "That's how you get away with murder."
Favorite Episode: Season 6 Episode 15: Stay
Tumblr media
Plot Synopsis:
The series is about a Criminal Law professor, Annalise Keating teaching a class at Middleton University. She selects a group of her best students to work at her firm also known as K5. They are Wes Gibbins, Michaela Pratt, Connor Walsh, Laurel Castillo, and Asher Millstone. The K5 also work under two of Annalise's dedicated associates: Frank Delfino and Bonnie Winterbottom.
The students' brilliant criminal defense professor become involved in a twisted murder plot that promises to change the course of their lives. They become entangled in a murder plot that will shake the entire university and the change their lives.
What I like:
I really like the twist in every seasons. Who will die next? When will the K5 break and betray each other and Annalise? Will Annalise stop helping them? Will they go to prison? What's their next case?
I also like the characters development and their background stories. Who they are and what's their connections to Annalise? Why Annalise chose them?
[SPOILER ALERT!]
Bonnie is the most loyal of them all. Annalise helped Bonnie as she remembered herself. Also, she felt guilty for being Bonnie's dad lawyer. Even though there are times that Annalise is an ass to Bonnie, she still care for her.
Frank Delfino, was Sam and Hannah Keating child from incest; who still remain loyal to Annalise. Also the reason why Annalise lost her baby. I ship Frank and Bonnie relationship. They knew each other, their real selves.
My favorite couple is Connor and Oliver. They really loved each other. The fact that Connor stayed even though Oliver is poz and that Oliver married him even knowing his secrets.
What I dislike:
I hate that the K5 are ungrateful. Annalise helped and sacrificed a lot for them. Everyone thinks she's a murderer even though it's them. Annalise is innocent and never killed anyone. Yes, she made some bad chooses like leaving Eve for Sam, framing Nate, and still helping her students even though they don't deserve it.
[SPOILER ALERT!]
What I really hate is that Connor went to jail even though he is the most innocent from the K5. I hate that Michaela did not, but I'm glad the others hated her in the end. She is my least favorite character. The fact that she cheated and destroyed her relationship with Asher for a one night stand. Then cheated to Gabriel with Asher. For me, Michaela is an ambitious overachiever, and exceedingly over prepared and ready to amaze her professor or people she admired. However, she always has the need to be in a relationship.
As for Asher, I think he deserve what happened to him. He died because he became an informant for the FBI which is never been a good choice.
If you haven't watched the series, I recommend that you watch it.

CONNOR WALSH
Tumblr media
Connor Walsh is one of the Keating Five.  He is the smartest person in the room, or at least he likes to think so. The sexy and sly Connor is used to getting any prize he lays his eyes on, ensuring that he and Michaela will constantly be in competition with each other. No matter how dirty the deed, he'll go to any lengths to earn Annalise Keating’s (his law professor’s) admiration. He has a relationship with Oliver. Halfway through his second year of law school, Connor dropped out because he realized that he no longer wanted to be a lawyer. He later revealed that he actually "flunked out". Once realizing that he did actually want to be a lawyer, he decided to re-apply for Middleton to repeat his second year again. He is currently married to his husband, Oliver Hampton.

YOUR FUNERAL
SEASON FIVE, EPISODE ONE
Masterlist
Tumblr media
"And I thought Christopher’s diaper smelled bad," Laurel says. They're starting their third year at Middleton, and they're back in the classroom. There are a few chairs, so most students are standing like they are.
"She'll weed out the duds," Michaela tells her.
"Unless we're the duds," April says. Laurel gives her a glance, which Michaela notices.
"Okay, what's up with you two?" She asks, annoyed.
April and Laurel look over at Michaela. "What?" They ask simultaneously.
"You've been acting weird," Michaela says. "Both of you."
"I've noticed too," Connor states.
"Did something happen?" Asher asks.
"Nothing happened," April tells him.
Annalise walks into the classroom. She looks at the students for a brief moment. "And to think they wouldn't even let me step foot on this campus a few months ago."
A few students chuckle at her comment. Annalise places her bag on the table, pulling out a small timer, which she puts on the desk. "Despite what you think, this is not an Advanced Trial Skills class. In fact, this is not a class at all. This is a sacrifice. From this point on, you will have no time for friends or family. Instead, you'll wake up hating yourself for choosing this life. But you'll get up anyway, killing yourself to win cases, only to lose and watch innocent people go to jail, and then you'll drink to make yourself feel better. Or take pills. Or fantasize about going to sleep... forever."
"That's the life you're choosing. Brutal, mean, depressing, ruthless. But that's what it costs to change the world. So, who wants in?" She smiles. And the students raise their hands.
"Mr. Chase, stand up," Annalise says. She is leaning against her desk. "What are you passionate about?"
"Oh," he seems surprised by the question, "uh, I've been pretty obsessed with Prince lately, but the early years—"
"I mean your legal passion," Annalise interrupts him. "That one issue you would take to the Supreme Court."
"Uh..."
"Get out," Annalise orders. "We have 24 seats to fill. Let's start culling the herd."
"But I signed up for this class."
"I don't care if you follow the rules. I care if you can kick ass in the courtroom. Are you quick on your feet? Can you move mountains with your words? That's not you. And don't tell me that there are any 1 or 2Ls in this class. I applaud your nerve, but you will not survive. Try again next year."
Several students grab their bags and start leaving. "Everyone else, you have 30 seconds to convince me that you care about something other than yourselves. Who wants to start?"
"Schools are the basis for a quality education, but there is no constitutional law that requires children to receive this education," Laurel says.
"The Equal Protection Clause forces business owner to provide services that contradict their religious beliefs."
It's Connor's turn. "Poverty is at the root of all human suffering. I would force the Treasury Department to provide a universal basic income for all citizens of this country."
"We need to appeal every loitering and trespass conviction in the country," Michaela states.
"We need to bring a Title 7 workplace discrimination case before the Supreme Court and redefine gender."
"These minor violations serve as a pretext to lock up thousands of black men for doing nothing more than standing on a sidewalk."
"We can no longer ignore the need for gun safety just because the gun lobby has bastardized the second amendment," April states.
Asher then speaks up. "We need to tear down and overhaul immigration by filing a civil rights complaint on behalf of every undocumented person."
"Congress's failure to adequately tax the wealth is an attack on the poor."
"This especially applies to the LGBTQ people who will be persecuted or even killed if they're sent back to their country of birth." Asher looks over at Michaela.
"But the law is on our side."
"The D.C. v Heller—"
"1983, the Civil Rights Act—"
"Standard of living—"
"As such, hampering children who cannot intelligently participate in a democratic society," Laurel finishes. The timer goes off.
"Go stand to the left," Annalise tells her. Laurel is a little confused but does as she is told.
Annalise splits them into two groups— left and right. "I'd file a suit against Mississippi arguing that every prison in the state is de facto cruel and unusual," one of the new students says.
"A suit on behalf of prisoners sounds like you're cribbing from my class action."
"No, I— I'm arguing you didn't go far enough. I'd lose my Mississippi case, but that's the point. The 5th Circuit will say that prisoners deserve only to be kept alive. As the appeals go on, my lead plaintiff will die— sad, yes. But the publicity will make SCOTUS take the case, and the 5th Circuit will have to eat their words. I'd sue other states until every prison in the country is under investigation, and we're forced to abolish our prison system on a national scale."
"Left," Annalise says— and that's where he goes.
"Congratulations, right side," Annalise says as she walks up to them. "None of you have to suffer my humiliations this semester. You're cut."
The student group makes their way out, as Annalise goes to the left group. "Everyone else from Round 2, tomorrow, you have to argue the opposing side of your passion. You exposed your bleeding heart. Now cut it out of your chest."
"Oh, my god!" Laurel exclaims when she sees Christopher— Frank brought him. "Christopher!"
"He was bugging me to see his ma," Frank says, handing Christopher over to Laurel.
"Oh, you want to go to law school now, too?" Michaela asks in her baby voice.
"Hey, did you take a job yet?" Connor asks Annalise, who was about to leave.
"Yeah, Bonnie said you were interviewing at a bunch of firms," April adds. Christopher is holding her pointy finger in his tiny hand. Laurel doesn't like her much at the moment, but she does let April see her son because he likes her.
"We are not doing this anymore," Annalise says.
"Having a conversation?" Connor asks.
"Making other students think that I'm playing favorites. Boundaries. That's the word for the year."
"Sounds good to me," Michaela retorts.
"Annalise," Frank says as he goes to follow her.
"Don't worry," April tells Christopher, smiling at the baby. "She's not always that cranky." They make their way down the stairs and leave.
///
"Universal basic income is an illegal redistribution of wealth prohibited by the Takings Clause in the fifth amendment." The students are at the house studying.
Franks walks in with chips and dip. "I'm bored already." He puts the snacks on the table— in front of April. "No wonder you failed out."
"And then busted my ass all summer to get back in."
"No, you got back in 'cause Annalise called in a favor."
"Did she tell you that?"
"I've already said too much."
Cristopher starts crying, causing Laurel to let out an annoyed sigh. "I just changed him." She gets up again.
"Nah, that's his I want my binky cry," Frank tells Laurel. "I got it." Frank goes to Christopher.
Laurel sits back down. "I hate your manny," Connor tells her.
"My son loves him."
"And you? Do you love him?" Asher asks before sipping his tea.
"No."
"But you're having sex again, right? 'Cause otherwise, why is he so happy to be changing diapers?"
"Because he loves Christopher."
"And the sex," Michaela adds.
"Michaela!" Laurel scolds her.
"Was that a secret?"
"Yes!"
"Everyone already knew that," April says. "It wasn't a secret. He likes to care of your baby because he likes you," she tells Laurel.
Michaela notices Laurel's annoyed look immediately. "Really? You're still doing that?"
"Yeah, seriously, you guys, what's going on?" Asher asks.
"Nothing is going on," April tells them, while Laurel just shrugs her shoulders. "Can you let this go?"
"She is practically stabbing you in her mind," Michaela tells April. "What are you guys hiding?"
"None of your business," Laurel replies.
Michaela scoffs. "Really?"
"Now I'm interested too," Connor says, taking a seat.
"Okay. What are you going to say to Marcus?"
Michaela is taken aback by the question. She turns to look at Laurel. "I didn't say anything," Laurel says.
"She didn't have to," April adds. "You ruined our relationship over this guy, so the least you can do is text him."
Michaela sighs, trying to figure out how they got here. "I don't know what to say."
"You'll figure it out." April grabs her notebook and continues to study.
///
"Ciao, bellas!" Oliver walks in, holding food. "Your delivery has arrived."
"Thank god. I'm starving," April says as they make their way over.
"I'll Venmo you later," Asher tells Oliver.
"Actually, I kind of need the money now."
April hugs Oliver before grabbing a slice of pizza. "Uh, I already paid you. Where's my salad?" Michaela asks.
"It got deported," Oliver says— Connor kissing him on the cheek. The guys grab some pizza for themselves.
"Oliver, where'd this come from?" Laurel asks, holding a white box. "There's no return address."
"It was at the front door when I walked in."
"Are you sure you should open it?" April asks.
"It's fine." Laurel uses her keys to open the box. She pulls out a small, white dress.
"What is it?" Asher asks.
"It's a baptism gown," Michaela says.
"My baptism gown," Laurel adds. "My mother was saving it for when I had my own baby."
"So that's from her?" Connor asks.
"Of course."
"Not your brother, the maid who raised you?"
"It's from her."
"Well, that means you didn't kill her, then, so I guess... great news all around." April gives Asher a pointed look for making that comment.
///
"Privacy rights are the foundation of our country, and one of the most private choices we can make is the way we educate our children," Laurel says— the next day in class. "As stated in Wisconsin v. Yoder."
"What if a parent wants to give their kids no education?" Annalise asks.
"The parent has the right to choose, as states in the constitu—"
"The constitution doesn't say anything about parents' rights," Annalise interrupts her.
"Let me finish—"
"You think the Justices let me finish my sentence?"
"Loitering statutes actually benefit minority communities by preventing behaviors proven to lead to violent crimes," Michaela says.
"You're talking pretextual stops?"
"Precisely, which were found legal by the unanimous 1996 SCOTUS decision in Wren v. U.S."
"The second amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms, and for a good reason," April says.
"Due process is a right reserved for American citizens, not illegal aliens," Asher states.
"You mean undocumented immigrants."
"No, they're illegal, pursuant to Section 1325 of the U.S. Code Title 8."
"It's wrong to assume freedom of religion is absolute, especially when it impedes the public trade in goods and services."
"Once the government begins regulating what every child learns, what stops them from deciding what books they read?"
"Because you're underprivileged doesn't mean you don't know the difference between right and wrong."
"In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court affirmed for the first time that the right belongs to individuals for self-defense in the home. So, it's my legal right to protect myself if someone breaks into my home and/or threatens my life in any way."
Annalise looks at April for a moment, then nods. "Alright. Who's next?" April takes her seat as Annalise grabs her phone.
"I'll go," Connor says. He and Gabriel stood up.
"All right, let's call it a day," Annalise says as she gets off her chair. "Mr. Walsh, you're first up tomorrow." She grabs her bag and leaves.
///
When April gets to her place, she sees Trevor standing at the door. "What are you doing here?" She asks as she walks up to him.
"Can we talk?"
"About what?"
"My dad left."
April still doesn't understand why he's there. "And that's my problem, how?"
Trevor sighs. "I don't know what to do. I'm alone."
"You're an adult. Figure it out."
Trevor stops her from entering. "You're the only family I have."
"No, we're not family. We're related. There's a difference." Trevor looks a little hurt by her words.
"I'm alone."
"We're all alone!" April shrugs her shoulders. "You need to figure yourself out. And trust me when I tell you that I'm doing you a favor because you need better people in your life. Not me, not your dad. You can do better."
"I've never been on my own."
April looks at him for a moment. "You're still living in your father's house. Get a job if you don't have one. Make friends. I don't care. I really don't. Now leave."
Trevor steps aside, letting her by. He doesn't respond. April unlocks the door and goes inside, closing it.

They’re in class the next day, and Connor and Gabriel are the only two left. "Handing out cash to the poor is a violation of Article 1 of the Constitution. The founding fathers purposely limited congress' taxation power to funds that provide for the general welfare of the United States."
"U.S. v. Butler held that congress could unilaterally decide what's in the public's interest," Annalise tells Connor.
"But congress can't decide that something that's detrimental to public interest is suddenly beneficial. Universal basic income has been proven to disincentivize people from improving their plight. That's in direct opposition to the general welfare described by Article 1."
Annalise looks at Connor for a moment before speaking. "Mr. Maddox, convince us why we need more prisons."
Connor, a little confused, steps aside, and Gabriel takes the spot in front of the class. "Imagine a murderer doing a couple of years and being released to the streets to kill again. Meanwhile, the victims and the families are never the same. I mean, think about the injustice in that. Your loved one's killer walks free while you suffer. I mean, how is that moral or decent? Once a person commits murder, they are broken. Something inside them is rotten."
"Mr. Maddox, where's the legal argument in all of this?" Annalise cuts in.
"I mean, I can get legal on you. We can talk about how the eighth amendment requires zero restraint when it comes to reoffenders or that four Supreme Court cases upheld this. But this... no, this— this is about what kind of society we want to live in. I mean, how would you feel if your kid got killed? Or your spouse? I mean, you of all people know what that feels like, Professor Keating."
The room gets quiet for a moment. "This is the argument you're taking to the Supreme Court?"
Gabriel nods. "It is. Because that's how you win— with emotion, just like how you did in your case."
"Take a seat," Annalise says after a brief moment.
Gabriel goes over to his desk. "And just so you know, I don't believe I damn thing I just said." He sits down, a smile on his face.

"Are you sure this is the right address?" April asks upon seeing the house. They stop in front of the front gate.
"Seriously, this is a little sad for a wedding," Laurel adds.
"Look, guys, Oliver is putting me through school, so I will get married wherever he wants me to get married," Connor tells them.
Oliver then opens the door; he looks excited. "You made it! Come on in."
April and Michaela share a look before entering the gate that Connor opened. Then walk into the house.
"Okay, I'll chip in money for your wedding so that we never have to come here again," Michaela says when she sees the inside of the house.
"I'll pay for the whole wedding if it means not seeing this place ever again," April adds.
"Uh, no— we're not having the wedding here," Oliver tells them. "We're gonna live here."
"No," Michaela and Laurel say.
"Yes! Come on! I mean, it's cheap and huge. And there's even room for a nursery."
"I'm not raising my child in an old frat house, Oliver."
"You're broke," he tells Laurel. "The FBI froze your family's money, and it's mean and selfish to keep leading Frank on. Not to mention, it takes a village to raise a child, so let this be our village!"
"You are insane," Connor says to Oliver.
"No, I'm resourceful, and unless you want to make up with your father so he'll pay for our wedding, this is our only option."
"Your only option," Michaela states. "I'm leaving." She starts walking towards the door but stops when Oliver speaks.
"You owe me this, Michaela!"
"How?"
"Simon is in a detention center right now— or, worse, Pakistan, where he can't speak the language or be gay. So now you have to move in here to make up for it."
"So, Asher already said no?"
"Just say yes. All of you." Oliver moves his attention to all of them. "Say yes to our wonderful, new, cheap life together."
April then speaks up. "That sounds nice, but I just moved into a new place, and I really like it there, so...."
Oliver looks disappointed. "Really?" April nods. "Well, you'll come by."
///
"I got good news," Annalise tells her students the next day. They're all standing at the back of the classroom while Annalise is leaning against her desk. "As of today, this clinic is officially being funded by my employer, Caplan & Gold."
April and Laurel look over at each other— they're standing on opposite sides. "And as a part of the funding, I've created a prize."
Annalise walks over to the blackboard. "Now, the student with the highest ranking at the end of the semester will get this...."
She writes a number on the blackboard; 64,278,00. "A year's tuition paid in full."
Annalise goes back to her desk and picks up a book. "Now, let's see which of you will compete." She opens the book. "Michaela Pratt, take a seat."
"Money's mine, bitches," Michaela whispers to herself as she goes to sit down.
Annalise proceeds to read up to five more names. "Laurel Castillo," she then says. "April Coleman." The two take their seats.
More students fill the seats, and April hopes her friends will get chosen. "Connor Walsh."
"One seat left," Annalise says after Connor sits down. "Now, before I announce this last name, I have a question. Mr. Maddox, is it true you're 2L?"
Gabriel nods. "Yeah."
"You broke the rules."
"It's because you said you don't care about the rules. This was about passion— something I showed you."
"I don't doubt your passion. I doubt that you can handle this on top of your 2L schedule. Why should I trust that you can?"
"Pick me, and I'll show you."
The room is silent. Annalise is trying to decide if she should choose him. And then she does. "Welcome to the clinic, Mr. Maddox."
Gabriel takes a seat. "And the rest of you... change the world on your own."
////
"Almighty and ever-living God, you sent your only son into the world to cast out the power of Satan, to rescue man and bring him into the splendor of your kingdom," the priest is speaking. Laurel is standing up there, holding Christopher. Annalise and Frank are next to her.
"We pray for this child. Set him free from original sin, make him a temple of glory, and send your Holy Spirit to dwell with him. We ask this through Christ, our Lord."
"Did he really propose?" Connor asks in a low voice.
April, who is standing next to him, answers. "Yes. And she said no." They keep their voices low, not to disturb.
"Isn't that mean, then, making him godfather?" Oliver asks.
"No, what's mean is you all moving in together after I got booted out of the clinic," Asher replies.
"And I baptize you, Christopher, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of this Holy Spirit."

Looking Ahead
[NOTE: this post is now out of date. Check the schedule tag on my blog for the most recent version of this list.]
Hello, Tumblr friends.
I have been, for a while now, hesitating to continue my customary series of posts chronicling the future public performance plans of my favorite singer, Dame Sarah Connolly.
I have decided to keep compiling and updating the list, but I also want to share some of my thoughts on the matter. Discussion, followed by list of performances, after the jump.
As you will probably have heard by now, Dame Sarah announced in July that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would have to withdraw from certain performances while undergoing treatment. She also expressed at the time a hope to fulfill all her other concert and recording commitments.
In the weeks since that announcement, Dame Sarah has made a few further alterations to her performing schedule while also maintaining some scheduled appearances: I myself heard her sing beautifully at concerts in Exeter and London earlier this month. A recent blog post by Jessica Duchen, written after that London concert, mentions that Dame Sarah now faces “a new journey, through chemotherapy.” Chemo protocols and how well individuals tolerate them can be really variable; the soprano Erin Wall has written about how she managed to keep performing between chemo treatments, but chemo can bring on a host of side effects that can make it extremely difficult to carry on one’s normal activities for the duration of treatment, which may take months. (Frankly, just reading that list from the American Cancer Society makes me feel sympathetically ill.)
I am sure you can see the delicacy of maintaining a public list of Dame Sarah’s scheduled performances. There is a lot that Dame Sarah herself probably does not know yet about her own treatment experience and how it will affect her availability (and desire) for work, and we the public may not know whether she is going ahead with any given engagement until relatively late.
I do not want to prematurely write off the next several months of Dame Sarah’s work, and I would still encourage anyone who lives near one of her performance venues to consider buying a ticket. It is a bit of a gamble, but if you can afford the risk of disappointment, go ahead and give yourself the possibility of hearing this wonderful singer.
At the same time, I think ticket buyers for whom Dame Sarah’s participation would be essential to the enjoyment of a concert should be aware that the likelihood of her withdrawal for health reasons is higher than usual in the next several months. What I provide below is the best information available through public channels; I’ll make an effort to update the list if and when I learn of any changes, but editing this list is not exactly my full-time job, and if there is a performance date that you care about, I would urge you to monitor the sponsor’s website and social media feeds for yourself.
Finally, and most delicately, although I consider this blog to be a fairly obscure corner of the internet, I would not want to embarrass Dame Sarah or damage her future employability by chronicling cancellations that might arise from her illness. No singer really wants to be associated with a record of frequent cancellations, however good the reasons for them might be. This consideration has been my greatest point of hesitation. I have, however, concluded that: (a) the circumstance of her illness is already well known in the industry, by her choice; (b) I really hope prospective employers will be understanding of her current circumstances and optimistic about her post-treatment future onstage; ( c ) I am only compiling information that is publicly available elsewhere; and (d) the intended audience for this list is fellow fans who, like me, want to keep tabs on possible opportunities to hear Dame Sarah perform live.
So. Here is the latest edition of my list:
Upcoming Performances by Dame Sarah Connolly
Those of you in Britain might catch a performance in London, Cheltenham, Chipping Campden, or Buxton. Those on the Continent might see Dame Sarah in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Hamburg, Köln, Rotterdam, Basel, or Vilabertran. An as-yet-unconfirmed performance may be on the horizon in New York.
The usual disclaimers:
This is not an authoritative list. These are the upcoming performances by Dame Sarah Connolly that I have been able to learn about from Dame Sarah’s new website, Dame Sarah’s agent's website (Askonas Holt), Operabase, Bachtrack, Dame Sarah's Twitter, and generally ferreting around the web.
I sometimes list concerts that are not yet officially confirmed; you should of course check official sources before making plans and be aware that cast changes and cancellations can happen at any time.
I have added links to venue, ticketing, and broadcast information where available. Tips on new information are always welcome! Please contact me via email (verdiprati [at] selveamene [dot] com), Tumblr messaging, or ask box (plain prose only in the ask box; anything with links or an email address will get eaten by Tumblr filters) with corrections or additions.
Recital with Julius Drake at Temple Church, London, November 25, 2019. The repertoire includes Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -leben, Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart, Judith Bingham’s Adieu Solace, and “songs by Alma and Gustav Mahler.” The Judith Bingham piece is apparently based on the life of Mary Queen of Scots, as are Schumann’s Gedichte.
Elgar, Sea Pictures with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, London, December 12, 2019. In a concert conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano that also includes instrumental works by Tippett and Vaughn Williams. UPDATE: as explained in a note on the LSO’s website, Dame Sarah has had to withdraw from the concert due to her treatment for breast cancer. Karen Cargill is scheduled to sing Sea Pictures instead.
[New! Deferred broadcast] Bob Chilcott, A Christmas Oratorio (Mary), on BBC Radio 3, December 19, 2019. World premiere performance recorded live during the Three Choirs Festival on August 1 of this year, at Gloucester Cathedral. The other vocal soloists include Nick Pritchard (Evangelist) and Neal Davies (Simeon). The Philharmonia Players are conducted by Adrian Partington, and the combined cathedral choirs that give the festival its name also participate. The recording should be available for listening on demand for about a month after the broadcast.
Wagner, Die Walküre (Fricka) at the Teatro Real, Madrid, February 12, 16, 21, 23, 25, and 28, 2020. Co-stars include Tomasz Konieczny (Wotan), Ricarda Merbeth (Brünnhilde), and Stuart Skelton (Siegmund). (James Rutherford, Ingela Brimberg, and Christopher Ventris appear in the roles respectively on the 23rd.) Pablo Heras-Casado conducts; the production by Robert Carsen is a revival from Oper Köln. Single tickets go on sale November 4, 2019 if I read the Teatro Real website correctly. UPDATE: Although Dame Sarah’s name still appeared on the Teatro Real website well into December 2019, she replied to a fan on Twitter on November 3, “sadly I won’t be singing Fricka in Madrid this time. Waltraute in [Autumn] 2020, Paris is still on!” (Note that as of February 21, 2020, this is no longer the case: Dame Sarah has been replaced by Michaela Schuster in the Paris cast.) In late December, the Teatro Real announced that Dame Sarah had canceled her participation and Daniela Sindram would sing the role of Fricka
Oskar Fried, Verklärte Nacht with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, London, March 13, 2020. From the Barbican website: “Dame Sarah Connolly is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and regrets that she must withdraw from this performance. BBC SO are grateful to Christine Rice for replacing her and wish Dame Sarah well in her recovery.”
Recital at Wigmore Hall, London, March 19, 2020. From the Wigmore Hall website: "As Dame Sarah Connolly continues a period of treatment and recovery following her breast cancer diagnosis, she needs to limit her schedule and therefore has had to withdraw from the above concert. We are grateful to Fatma Said (soprano) for taking her place.”
Conversation with Mahan Esfahani at Sir John Lyon’s Theatre, London, March 20, 2020. Per the RPS: "With regret, Dame Sarah has had to withdraw from the event and we wish her all the very best at the current time.” Esfahani is still booked for the event; he will engage in conversation with the conductor François-Xavier Roth.
Appearance at “Bringing the House Down” charity concert at Glyndebourne, Lewes, April 5, 2020. Update: Dame Sarah’s name has been quietly removed from the list.
Mahler, Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, with the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Basel Minster, April 22, 2020. Update: Catriona Morrison is now the listed mezzo soloist.
Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Festival Hall, London, April 30, 2020. Update: a statement on the Philharmonia’s website reads, “Dame Sarah Connolly has had to withdraw from this performance due to ongoing treatment for breast cancer. We are grateful to Claudia Mahnke for stepping in. Dame Sarah intends to return to performing later this year.”
[Canceled] Mahler, Symphony No. 2, Resurrection with the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, De Doelen, Rotterdam, May 14, 15, and 17, 2020. Chen Reiss sings the soprano part; Lahav Shani conducts. UPDATE: As of this writing on April 6, the orchestra’s website now explains that “Following the government decision regarding COVID-19, this concert cannot take place on the planned dates.”
[Canceled] Recital with Ashley Riches, Joseph Middleton, and Tony Robb at the Chipping Campden International Music Festival, May 22, 2020. The recital was originally billed as a collaboration between Connolly and Middleton only, with repertoire TBA. Now that Riches and Robb have been added to the group, the program has been listed with repertoire by Duparc, Debussy, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Caplet, and Fauré. The Festival website explains, “Following treatment for breast cancer Dame Sarah has made changes to this programme to reduce her workload while her recovery continues. She hopes very much the audience will enjoy the variety these changes afford.” UPDATE: As of March 23, the entire festival has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
[Canceled] Mahler, Symphony No. 2, Resurrection with the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Köln Philharmonie, May 27, 2020. Chen Reiss sings the soprano part; Lahav Shani conducts. (A repeat of the program from Rotterdam, above.) UPDATE: See the note on the May 14-17 concerts, above.
[Canceled] Recital at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, June 6, 2020. With Malcolm Martineau. The program includes Ravel’s Shéhérazade, Elgar’s Sea Pictures, Debussy’s Trois chansons de Bilitis, and various works by Hugo Wolff, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Charles Villiers Stanford, and Cecile Chaminade. UPDATE: as of this writing on April 14, I am now observing the word “Annulé” at the bottom of the concert information page (below the word “Tarifs”), which I take to mean that the concert has been canceled.
[Canceled] Mahler, Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand with the Wiener Symphoniker at the Musikverein, Vienna, June 12 and 13, 2020. Three Vienna choirs add their forces; Philippe Jordan conducts. The other scheduled vocal soloists are Camilla Nylund, Irène Theorin, Martina Janková, Michaela Schuster, Burkhard Fritz, Iain Paterson, and John Relyea. UPDATE: Although the informational pages for these concerts do not mention their cancellation, the Wiener Symphoniker website has a news post explaining that the Austrian government has canceled all indoor events with more than 100 participants through the end of June, and thus the orchestra’s public performances will not take place during this time period.
[Canceled] Duruflé, Requiem with the Choir of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, at Ferrandou Musique in Beaulieau-sur-Dordogne, Turenne, and Carennac, France, June 20-22, 2020. UPDATE: this series of concerts is now marked with a “CANCELED” banner on the Ferrandou Musique website.
[Canceled] Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde (in a chamber arrangement) at the Proms at St Jude’s, Hampstead Garden Suburb, July 2, 2020. With Andrew Staples and the Aurora Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nicholas Collon. The orchestra played the same arrangement, with the same vocalists, in 2017; here’s the (very positive) Bachtrack review. UPDATE: Although, oddly, I can find no direct reference to the cancellation of this concert or of the whole festival on the Proms’ website, a tweet from the Proms at St Judes on March 24 announced the cancellation of the 2020 festival.
[Canceled] Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde (in a chamber arrangement) at the Cheltenham Music Festival, July 3, 2020. With Andrew Staples and the Aurora Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nicholas Collon. UPDATE: On April 7, the Senior Management Board of the Cheltenham Festivals announced that the 2020 Cheltenham Music Festival is canceled (along with its sister Jazz and Science Festivals).
[Canceled] Recital at the Buxton International Festival, July 11, 2020. With Joseph Middleton. Songs by Poulenc, Duparc, Mahler, and Schumann. Note the noon hour and the short duration of this performance. UPDATE: Although I am late to pick up the news, cancellation of the Buxton International Festival was apparently announced on March 18.
[Canceled] Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde (in a chamber arrangement) at Wigmore Hall, London, July 17, 2020. With Andrew Staples and the Aurora Chamber orchestra conducted by Nicholas Collon. UPDATE: On March 30, Wigmore Hall announced that it would close for the remainder of the ’19- ’20 season and all performances through July 31 would be canceled.
[Canceled] Recital at Schubertíada Vilabertran, August 21, 2020. With Malcolm Martineau. Songs by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Elgar, Debussy, Ravel, and Chaminade. UPDATE: Although the Schubertíada announced on June 10 that it would go ahead with a schedule of live concerts, Dame Sarah’s has been eliminated. The Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reports that “[el] concierto con Sarah Connolly ha caído por cuestiones de salud de la mezzo británica” (the concert with Sarah Connolly has fallen due to the British mezzo’s health concerns).
[Canceled] Mahler, Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, with the MDR Rundfunkchor and Sinfonieorchester Basel, in Basel, August 26, 2020. Christina Landshamer sings the soprano solo and Yoel Levi conducts. Part of a concert with a work called “Epitaph” by Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini. UPDATE: I am not sure on what date the concert was deep-sixed, but the MDR website now marks it as “abgesagt” (canceled).
[New details!] Recital at Wigmore Hall, London, September 30, 2020. With Roderick Williams and Julius Drake; the first concert of the Wigmore’s Mendelssohn and Liszt series.
Recital at Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, Barcelona, October 2, 2020. With Julius Drake. Part of the LIFE Victoria series of recitals; originally announced for November 27, 2019, but postponed due to Dame Sarah’s treatment for breast cancer. Songs by Brahms, Wolf, Debussy, Alma Mahler, Gustav Mahler, and Zemlinsky. As of April 30, LIFE Victoria has issued a press release indicating that they still plan to go ahead with recitals scheduled for the fall of 2020.
Wagner, Götterdämmerung (Waltraute, Zweite Norn) at the Opéra national de Paris, November 13, 17, 21, and 28, and December 6, 2020. Update: the roles of Waltraute and Zweite Norn are now assigned to Michaela Schuster, one of a handful of casting changes reported by OperaWire on February 21, 2020.
[New details!] Handel, Agrippina (title role) at the Dutch National Opera, January 17-27, 2021. Finally, a year and a half after the news started leaking on Twitter, we get the official announcement, complete with a bizarre (even by DNO marketing department standards) video of a rubber-covered woman dancing in a ball pit. The production is Barrie Kosky’s (previously seen at the Bayerische Staatsoper and the ROH, and later moving on to the Staatsoper Hamburg). Ottavio Dantone conducts; co-stars include Ying Fang (Poppea), Franco Fagioli (Nerone), Gianlucca Buratto (Claudio), and Tim Mead (Ottone). If I read the DNO website correctly, tickets go on sale June 3, 2020.
[New!] Stravinsky, Oedipus Rex (Jocaste) at the Dutch National Opera, March 10-27, 2021. In a double bill with the new commission From ‘Antigone’ by Samy Moussa. Other singers in the Oedipus cast include Sean Panikkar (Oedipus), Bastiaan Everink (Creon), Rafał Siwek (Tiresias), and Ramsey Nasr (Speaker). Erik Nielsen conducts; Wayne McGregor directs. If I read the DNO website correctly, tickets go on sale November 17, 2020.
[New!] Stravinsky, Oedipus Rex (Jocaste) with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Hamburg, April 10 and 11, 2021. Even though these concert performances follow on the heels of Dame Sarah’s engagement for the same opera in Amsterdam, the two gigs appear to be administratively and artistically unrelated. Her co-stars in Hamburg include Brenden Gunnell (Oedipus), Tomasz Konieczny (Creon), and Sir John Tomlinson (Tiresias); the MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig supplies the men’s chorus. Alan Gilbert conducts. The program also includes Le sacre du printemps. Tickets can be ordered starting May 26, 2020, with payment due six weeks before the concert. There’s some background information on the NDR website.
[New!] Recital at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, May 18, 2021. With Julius Drake. Songs by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Elgar, Debussy, Ravel, and Chaminade. Tickets go on sale June 1, 2020.
[New!] Elgar, The Dream of Gerontius with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Berlin, May 27, 28, and 29, 2021. With Allan Clayton and Roderick Williams, as well as the Rundfunkchor Berlin; Simon Rattle conducts.
[Livestream] The concert on the 29th will be livestreamed on the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall platform.
[Unconfirmed / details TBA] Brett Dean, Hamlet (Gertrude) at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, sometime in 2021-22. Allan Clayton, who starred in the title role of Brett Dean’s Hamlet at Glyndebourne in 2017, mentioned in an interview with the Telegraph that he would be reprising the role at an unspecified date and venue in the US. When prompted on Twitter, Dame Sarah indicated that she would be participating in the revival, too (“I shall be misunderstanding my confused boy again”). In a later interview with Opera News, Clayton reportedly specified that he would reprise Hamlet at the Met. The Future Met Wiki places the production at the Met in the 2021-2022 season (as does this New York Times article). Hat tip to Christopher Lowrey, who sang Guildenstern in the original production at Glyndebourne, whose tweet praising Allan Clayton brought the Telegraph interview to my attention. (No indication whether Lowrey will also be cast in the American revival.) Additional hat tip to the Tumblrer who submitted information on this topic via the ask box.
