Eomma, Home soon?
Tumblr media
You look out curiously at the deserted parking lot of the apartment complex. You've behaved really well over the last few days and haven't cried that much when the other children have been able to see their parents, when the adults have come into the foster family's home with a smile on their faces and showered their children with love, affection and pet names. And yet you felt like crying… you didn't want to be in this place… you just wanted to be with your grandma.
"Here you are, darling. Don't you want to come into the living room? Kiwi is waiting for someone to play ball with him?"
Kiwi… that was the little family dog… barely bigger than a cat and with lots of fur… maybe he was a teddy bear disguised as a dog. You like animals and since you arrived at the foster family, you have had your first and probably best contact with Kiwi…..Kiwi reminds you of your mom's cat, the cat that also had to leave home…..because mom can no longer be with you…with you…not every day…not every week…..you don't understand why. Mommy hasn't done anything bad?
"Waiting for Mommy!" you say seriously, with all the seriousness that a 3-year-old toddler can display, and slap the window with the flat of your hand to make it clear that you have to watch the parking lot very carefully.
You couldn't understand that you ended up in the foster family because your mother - also known as Mi-Nyeo Han - is in a lot of debt… and a court decided that she is not able to care for you or the baby that is now small… you didn't know that your mom had another baby… you hadn't seen each other for so long. The visits were irregular and you don't notice the protective glances from the foster parents when your mom shows up with a big grin, a cloud of alcohol surrounds her and she rushes towards you with an energetic cheer. For you, your mom is still your mom… your Eomma.
"Oh look, Kiwi wants to keep you company, isn't that nice huh?"
The pattering of paws and the quiet barking of the dog makes you look up briefly and Kiwi actually manages to distract you for a few minutes. You stroke the dog's soft fur and don't hear the exchange of words that is taking place in the hallway. The quiet words of the foster parents, who are discussing whether a complete ban on contact would be the alternative… because in their eyes Mi-Nyeon is not a good companion and an even worse mother who only thinks about herself… why else was she denied custody of a 3-year-old daughter and a small baby and both children are now in the foster family system?
It took a long time until the doorbell finally rang and your growling stomach left you feeling conflicted… what if it was mom? But you're hungry too… you've barely moved from the window seat. Kiwi barks loudly once and then runs out of the room towards the hallway.
Mom wouldn't forget you, would she? She loves you as much as you love her. And you belong together…soon you'll be able to live at home again, right? You, mom and the cat Brownie. Yes, mom really did call the cat Brownie, but Brownie doesn't have brown fur at all, she's snow white. You miss Brownie very much…but you miss your mother even more.
"….she can eat here…."
"Nonsense! I made some money and my baby girl is going to eat with me, where is she?"
"Listen Mi-Nyeo we….."
"Yeah yeah, whatever, I want to go to that ever-crowded hamburger restaurant near the main station with my daughter now…..burgers and fries yeees!"
"Mi-Nyeo please listen to us, you are clearly not in the mood….."
"WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?! FUCKING TELL ME AGAIN….!"
Your little heart leaps when you hear your mom's loud voice, she is never angry with you and mom was always nice to Brownie the cat too, so you don't waste any time, climb down from the windowsill and run as fast as your little feet can carry you towards the hallway.
"EOMMA!" - you call out and it doesn't take three seconds before Mi-Nyeon's pissed off face lights up and she crouches down, spreads her arms and her eyes shine with maternal happiness.
"That's my baby girl! Come to me and give your Eomma a big hug!"
You throw yourself into your mom's outstretched arms with so much momentum and euphoria that she loses her balance for a moment and lands on her back on the floor, which makes you both laugh out loud.
"Listen baby girl, Eomma has a surprise. We're going to eat hamburgers and fries today!" - said your mother after she sat up and positioned yourself on her hip. Automatically you wrap your little hands around her neck and nod enthusiastically.
"Don't even think about stalking us. I'll bring her back safe and sound, you control freaks," Mi-Nyeo said to the foster parents before she left the building complex with you in her arms and ordered the hamburgers and fries in the small, crowded restaurant as promised.
When asked if you didn't want to sit alone like a big girl instead of sitting on her lap like a koala, you said no, shocked, and just emphasized again in your words that you missed your mommy very much and wanted to go home as soon as possible… to her and Brownie the cat.
You enjoy every precious moment and as you leave the restaurant, you don't even question why your mom doesn't take you straight back to your foster parents. She's going to one of the many subway stations… she's carrying you, so you don't get lost. Ha! And let's see if anyone says Mi-Nyeo has no sense of responsibility.
"YOU! I've thought about it! I want to play against YOU again!"
You look curiously at your mother's face as she heads towards a man with a briefcase and suit on one of the empty subway platforms who is just about to leave.
"Baby girl, sit down there and watch, OK?" - you wanted to protest and would much rather continue to hide your head in the crook of your neck or under your mom's jacket when the strange adult in the suit casts such an intense look at you… but your mom says the words so sternly that you just sulk and let her sit you on the floor.
The two adults talk to each other and the man in the suit opens the briefcase, takes out two game pieces… one red and one blue… you tilt your head and wonder what kind of game this is.
It doesn't take long before Mi-Nyeo plays against the salesman… and wins. Not just some money, but also a card.
With a broad grin, she takes the card and puts you in her arms again before heading towards the exit of the station.
"Circle, triangle, square," you take a look at the side of the small card that your mom is holding in her hands and you recognize symbols.
"Such a clever girl!", your mom praises you and turns the card over once….you don't know these symbols but your mother walks into a dark side alley with you in her arms when you're back on the surface and dials the number on the card.
"Would you like to take part in the games?"
"Fuck yes! Who would say no to that?!"
"Come to the address mentioned above on the following date…"
You don't understand exactly what's coming out of the phone, but it seems to make mom happy, so you just snuggle up a little closer to her and listen to her heartbeat. Sometimes that calms you down…..the thought of having to leave again and go back to the foster family scared you…..you just want to stay with your Eomma!
"Okay baby girl, listen to me, it's possible that Eomma won't come to the next meeting, she has to do something, and if that works out, I'll take you to my place… and we'll buy a nicer apartment… and finally be happy again… but you have to be strong and brave, right?"
"Okay Eomma," you just murmur and reach for a strand of hair to gently play with it.
You don't notice how tears form in your mother's eyes, you twirl the strand of hair around your right index finger… Mommy's hair is always so curly and pretty… I wonder if you'll have such pretty hair when you grow up.
"And then… I'll introduce you to your baby brother… I promise," - she murmurs lovingly and gives you a tight hug.
The farewell in the foster family's apartment is loud, tearful and full of tears, you hit and bite your foster mother who tries to pick you up when Mi-Nyeo puts you down on the sofa in the living room with a heavy heart and you make grabby hands up to your Eomma.
"Eomma, not by by! Me coming with you!", - you cry and when Mi-Nyeon bends down to say her last words of farewell, you cling to her, crying and shaking.
"Sssssh baby girl, Eomma is coming back. She just has to go away for a little while……," - Mi-Nyeo tries to calm you down and rocks you gently back and forth like a very small baby….you actually hate it when anyone tries that….but with your Eomma it's different…..and it's the only thing that can calm you down right now.
Only slowly do you stop shaking and can finally be sat down on the sofa again….your mom carefully takes your little hands in her big hands and looks at you with a look so full of love and affection.
"You are a little fighter, a brave little fighter , who won't let anything get you down - until Eomma comes back and we're a family again, right?"
You nod.
"Eomma home soon?" - you ask and Mi-Nyeon nods, gives you a final goodbye kiss on your hair and then leaves the apartment.
You will cling to this promise like a life preserver in the coming days.
Because you want to be brave and courageous for your Eomma.
She promised to come back soon and then you can go home… to Brownie the cat and you'll meet your baby brother.
And Eomma has never broken a promise to you.
Never.
How could you have guessed that this promise would never come true?
It would tear the ground from under your feet… like shattering glass plates… from normal window glass and not safety glass!
THE END

So I've broken my tentative hiatus for Squid Game brainrot, of all the things. I don’t know how else to channel it out of my body and brain…
My relationship with the show has been v sporadic. Didn’t watch the first season until 2-3 years after its release because I didn’t believe the subject would be compelling to me (not into shows highly action-packed or game/reality show-esque, and this was the impression I had of it), but after realizing it was more like Alice in Borderland (another show with similar ideas to Squid Game - which I’d highly recommend), I decided to give it a shot. I still personally found AiB better— at least the first season— but I enjoy Squid Game about as much at this point. The characters really make it for me.
I finally watched the second season of Squid Game this past week. I know it may be old news being over a month old now (hurts my soul how fast things are blown through now, despite knowing some part of the fandoms will linger), but it at least wasn’t years later that I got to it this time, and frankly it’s had me spiraling right back into a Squid Game headspace even harder this time. I didn’t expect its abrupt end, either; I went into this season with full expectancy it’d be like the first, with the story playing entirely through. I get why they’d split it up though, what with modern society’s attention span and keeping the show’s momentum lasting a little longer.
If I knew, I may have waited to start watching until both season 2 and 3 were already out, hahaha... but alas. Instead, I revisited season 1 again, since it’s been long enough I’ve forgotten a good portion of it. So much, in fact, I didn’t realize some of the characters were recurring characters— outside of the Recruiter and Gi-hun. But much of it gradually returned to me as I went, as things do. Jung-bae and In-ho were more of a slow dawning realization; even though I knew In-ho was Jun-ho’s brother, I hadn’t remembered anything beyond his S1 cliff-reveal and assumed he hadn’t been in the show in any real capacity until season 2. The wonders of a faulty memory. But I’ve finished it all, both the new and revisiting of old.
Wanted to list my favorite characters throughout both seasons for mainly my own fun, though I'm honestly interested in most:
1. Seong Gi-hun - S1 & S2. Call me basic for this one. While he may make questionable life decisions, he’s genuinely empathetic toward others in such an endearing way, one of the few humans willing to take chances on people no one else will, even if at a detriment to his own well being. This man has been experiencing trauma after trauma in terms of loss and somehow manages to keep on going.
Tumblr media
2. Hwang In-ho - S1 & S2. Perhaps another basic choice, but I’m a down-hard sucker for layered villains — nay, evil villains that still have a sliver of humanity and/or emotion still left inside of them, even if in an unclear or confusing way. I admit I thought little of him in the first season, aside from some curiosity surrounding how he became who he is, but the second season has me hooked. He is about the most charismatically awkward man when it comes to imitating typical human behavior that I’ve ever witnessed, and I live for it.
Tumblr media
3. Jo Hyun-ju - S2. Honestly another genuine soul who does far more for others than they probably deserve, and who was prematurely robbed of a beautiful friendship (or more, depending on how you could look at it). Even stays honest in spaces it may not wholly be known to be safe. We could all aspire to this level of bravery and candor.
Tumblr media
4. The Recruiter - S1 & S2. Teetering on the edge of being too unhinged for the profession he’s been given, yet it works regardless. Truly, how batshit this guy ended up being was a prime choice for season two and I’d watch a series of his character and his antics any day.
Tumblr media
5. Kang Sae-Byeok - S1. Simply v interesting from the start. Has a level of mysterious, quiet daring you wouldn’t expect, but makes her interaction with almost every character a unique one. Conspires with a random, unhinged woman with zero warning and no hesitation. Literally pulls a shard of glass out of her own torso and proceeds to act as casual as possible about it.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions (tbh, a continuation beyond top 5)
6. Abdul Ali - S1 (he deserved more; I would fight his enemies to the death for him.)
Tumblr media
7. Bak Jung-bae - S2 (supportive bestie, tries to get you to focus on the good in both yourself as well as the smaller things. how can you not appreciate him?)
Tumblr media
8. Oh Il-Nam - S1 (unpopular opinion, but he was honestly an interesting character. don't approve of the ‘exorbitant levels of wealth leading to cruel & inhuman levels of detachment’ associations he has, but the way his interactions seemed a lot like tests for goodness - primarily with Gi-hun and especially in the marble scene - while also appearing to reconnect with his own sense of humanity wrecked me)
Tumblr media
9. Choi Woo-seok - S2 (found the random crony to genuine, helpful ally to be a lesser-used, endearing role. i'd work with him)
Tumblr media
10. Han Mi-nyeo - S1 (couldn't stand her, but admittedly she did some both bold and badass [albeit shameless] things I can't help but respect her for, mainly the bathroom and glass bridge scenes)
Tumblr media
11. Cho Sang-woo - S1 (honestly hated him as well, but he was a well-written character who played his self-serving role with aplomb, and I found him fascinating struggling with his skewed morals)

╰┈➤ cho sang-woo x player!reader imagine
a/n: i would like to give a special thank you to @lumillsie for the layout of this post and for the filter used on the header!
Tumblr media
˚ ༘♡ sang-woo held your hands carefully, his fingers scarcely brushing the raw, incensed marks from the rope burns. the reddened skin stood out against your pallid complexion, making the injuries look worse than you tried to let on. you flinched slightly when he turned your palms upward, his touch so delicate it made your chest ache. “it’s not so bad,” you murmured, your voice light, though the sting was anything but mild. you glanced up at him, hoping your slight smile would ease the worry etched into his exhausted, weary features.
˚ ༘♡ his brows furrowed together, your futile consolation doing little to calm him. his thumb drifted near the worst of the burns, as if he wanted to soothe the pain but didn’t dare. “i’m sorry,” he spoke, his voice desolate and tormented, as if it was meant for your ears alone, the others no concern of his. he shook his head, his jaw tightening. “if they’d given us water or even a cold drink, it might’ve helped. don’t put too much pressure on your hands, okay?”
˚ ༘♡ you gazed at him, surprised by the softness in his tone. “sang-woo, really, it’s nothing. we all got burns from the tug of war game,” you replied, your countenance softening as you glanced down at your scorched hands. “i’ll be fine.” the sincerity in his cloudedngaze made your heart burn with adoration, although the sting from your injuries grounded you.
˚ ༘♡ he didn’t respond right away, his dark eyes lingering on your hands like he could will the pain away by staring at it long enough. for a split second, it seemed like he was about to say something, something you weren’t sure you were ready to hear, but instead, he let out a quiet sigh and bit into the corn cob the guards had distributed to the surviving players as meal rations. the stiffness in his shoulders stuck around, an indicative sign of his unease.
˚ ༘♡ “and you, babe!” mi-nyeo’s voice cut through the air, loud and exaggerated, she was player 212, who had been on their team for the last game. “three steps forward, huh? so cool.” her giggle was thick with flirtation as she strutted closer to sang-woo, clearly angling for his attention.
˚ ༘♡ but he didn’t so much as glance at her. not a single flicker of acknowledgment crossed his face. instead, his gaze flickered back to you for the briefest of moments, his lips pressing into a thin line when he saw your discomfort. you shifted uncomfortably beside him, your fingers curling slightly against your lap, but his knee brushed yours, whether intentional or not, it was enough to send a reassuring warmth through you. gi-hun, noticing the awkwardness brewing between everyone, laughed, his tone cheerful. “hey, sang-woo’s got a girlfriend already, so give it a rest.”
˚ ༘♡ mi-nyeo froze fora beat, her playful smirk disappearing. her eyes darted toward you, sitting stiffly next to sang-woo. she blinked in disbelief, her gaze flitting between the two of you before settling on you. “the foreign girl?” she scoffed, her voice rising. “seriously? come on, sang-woo, you can do so much better…”
˚ ༘♡ you opened your mouth to speak, but sang-woo beat you to it, his voice slicing through the tension. “why don’t we eat in silence?” his tone was cold, sharper than you’d ever heard it, and it left no room for argument. his dark eyes narrowed on mi-nyeo, making it clear he wouldn’t tolerate another word from her.
˚ ༘♡ a small tinge of satisfaction warmed your chest as mi-nyeo’s face fell, though you kept your expression neutral. she paused for a moment, clearly trying to think of a way to regain control of the conversation. eventually, she shrugged, her grin returning with a sly twist. “if that’s what you want,” she declared, drawing out her words before sauntering away with an exaggerated sway in her hips.
˚ ༘♡ the minute she was gone, you let out a slow breath, the tension in your chest easing slightly. sang-woo hadn’t moved, his posture rigid and his dark eyes fixed on the ground, though his tensed muscles revealed his lingering frustration. you glanced at him, hesitant but apprehensive. “you didn’t have to do that,” you murmured, your voice soft enough to be carried away by the air around you.
˚ ༘♡ his head turned toward you, his dark eyes meeting yours witha strength that brought you to stop speaking. “yes, i did,” he said, his words hushed and certain, as if it were the most evident notion in the world. “she doesn’t get to talk to you like that.” his manner of speech carried a modest intensity, the kind that didn’t need to be loud to make an impact.
˚ ༘♡ you blinked, surprised by the tenderness of his response. “it doesn’t bother me,” you said, though the strain in your voice betrayed the pitiful lie. you wanted to brush it off, to convince him, and maybe yourself, that it didn’t matter with how dire the circumstances were. yet he didn’t look away, and the way his eyes searched yours made it unthinkable to hold the facade.
˚ ༘♡ “it should,” he said quietly. his gaze went to your wounded hands again, fixated on the burns as his fingers twitched, as if he wanted to reach for you but didn’t know if he should. “you don’t deserve that insolent mockery and those rude insults.”
˚ ༘♡ the raw honesty in his voice made something inside you ache. you swallowed hard, your heart catching at the way he looked at you, in a way that betrayed that he cared more than he was willing to admit. “we all deal with it,” you said gently, the words feeling inadequate even as they left your lips.
˚ ༘♡ his expression didn’t change, but his voice softened just enough to make your chest tighten. “that doesn’t make it right,” he mumbled, almost to himself. he leaned slightly closer, his tone faint enough that it felt like the world around you had fallen away. “if i could make it easier for you, i would.”
˚ ༘♡ your breath caught in your throat, the unexpected affection of his words settling solemnly in the little distance between the two of you. for a brief period of time, neither of you spoke, the solitude stretching out in a way that felt strangely comforting. you could feel the unspoken significance of everything he wasn’t saying, everything he couldn’t put into words, and it was enough to make the misery of the desolate world seem distant, something nonexistent.
˚ ༘♡ “thank you,” you finally whispered, your voice barely able to be heard but carrying more meaning than the mere words could communicate.
˚ ༘♡ he gave the smallest nod, his lips pressing together as if to keep himself from saying more. the short-lived instance of genuine affection had ended, but the feeling it left behind stayed with you, lingering, quiet, and comfortable in a way you couldn’t quite explain.

my headcanons on sg s2 gals
just what i think they'll do in general, imma leave this chronologically too
044 (Seo Nyeo)
An astrological asshole at best.
She's Mi Nyeo level unhinged that can predict shit on other people, with the harshest truths too because she's super brash and is incredibly self-serving.
Nobody likes her, to where if there's a marble game in season 2 you bet her ass is gonna get dragged out too.
basically that one kid everyone warned you about and you know EXACTLY why
095 (Young-Mi)
She just wants to be left alone with Hyun-Ju honestly
just genuinely wholesome despite her traumas
Has permanent financial trauma after she got out, in a way she wants to restart her life and go from there
Will cook with Geum-Ja dinner for all :D except not even she knows if she's a good cook or not
120 (Hyun Ju)
Yes she fucking carried the whole show, yes she does not fuck around with guns
Reality is she just wants to be accepted and be left alone with that one ounce of validation to hold on, even if it's just Young-Mi giving her that
Bet she knows some gals in Thailand too via the internet and find solace in them, as much solace as she finds with her friends irl
149 (Geum Ja)
Great mom, but justifies her son way too much
Nobody can shit on her son BUT her
Very accepting somehow
Your classic asian grandma who happens to know every known korean recipe, but budgeted
196 (Kang Mi-Na)
she probably follows the whole floptropica shit on tiktok
probably was a tiktok livestreamer who failed, definitely pro-crypto
look if it aint that wasp's fault, you bet your ass she's gonna unseriously survive very long too
basically female thanos but instead of random raps you get like random yassified words
222 (Jun Hee)
When she gets out, she's straight up gonna file for a restraining order against Myung-Gi while getting her pregnancy stuff done
Does not care to whatever happened to Myung-Gi, they're so DONE.
Due to him she's probably incredibly anti-crypto as well.
Might get someone from her team (most likely Dae-Ho) to be her nanny since it's going to be overwhelming for her to handle literally everything, especially with the baby
380 (Se-Mi)
she is manipulative yet playful, but not in a way where she would lead one to be injured on purpose
lives in the present
makes too much edgy jokes based on her situation, one'll feel awkward for laughing
probably avidly smokes and drinks outside of the events
Guard 011 (No-Eul)
Just stressed the fuck out. She's only living for her newborn to be still alive at this point. Only then we'll see her smile.
fucking hates every single job she had in the past
needs about at least 3 therapists because she's that broken
Definitely secretly and slightly ripped. May not take out an entire gang kind tho

I love how the Squid Game fandom made the freaking BATHROOM of all places as a legitimate romantic destination for couples. Though a very specific breed of couples that are of trashy persuasion.
