Name: Ripper
Debut: Metroid
Imagine if there was a guy who loved beetles a lot, thought they were the pinnacle of anatomy, loved almost everything about them, especially the fact that they fly! But this guy hates the WAY they fly. They wish they didn't have to open their beautiful elytra to fly, ruining the impeccable smoothness of the carapace. This guy would be pretty weird. I would disagree. But I have to say they would love Ripper! That is a really long-winded way of saying "Ripper is like a beetle that hovers without using any wings"!
Ripper is like a beetle that hovers without using any wings. That's a cool sort of alien thing to do! But then you see its legs and that's just goofy. It really is just a bug that inexplicably hovers and is nearly invincible. And it's iconic! I admittedly have not played that much Metroid, but I have played the first game (bad) and its remake (awesome), and I could not imagine it without Ripper! It floats lazily and horizontally back and forth, usually in vertical areas, and feels as integral to a Metroid bestiary as a critter that walks around ever surface of a platform.
Tumblr media
If you want more proof that Ripper is already perfect, look at Metroid Fusion. In this game, the X Parasite infects many species, mimicking them and giving the copies altered abilities, but the Ripper copies stay the same as the original! Nothing to improve upon here!
Tumblr media
Ripper was so great that they made a sequel! This is Ripper II! They were very (rightfully) confident in Ripper being a hit, so confident, in fact, that they made Ripper II in the very same game, before the general public could even give feedback on the original. I'm sure that after the game came out, though, people were sending in fan mail about our favorite horizontal hoverer! Ripper II is faster. Not a Ripper for everyone! Don't adopt it without making sure you can handle it first!
Tumblr media
Is this a Ripper? Not quite! This one is a Tripper! It is not called that because it is mean and tries to trip you. It is actually passive, and you can stand on it, and go for a Trip as it flies! What a nice creature.
Tumblr media
Last, but certainly not least, is the Winged Ripper! They gave wings to a flying creature! So droll! Very similar principle to the Para-Biddybud, putting wings on top of what may very well be elytra, but in this case it was ALREADY able to fly! Para-Ripper over here is a lot like if you add wings to an entity in Super Mario Maker, because the wings make it fly around a distinct path and even allow it to explore the y-axis. It only appears in one room, where it must be frozen to act as a step for Samus to stand on, so she can reach a giant larva that is ensnared by vines. Awesome! Winged Ripper is truly a one scene wonder, enhanced even further by its similarity to Para-Beetle, everyone's darling!
I don't know why these things are called Rippers. Maybe they would use their chewing beetle mouthparts to really rip into a good leaf if offered one, and have a rip-roaring good time!

Samus Aran from Metroid Fusion as a Symbiote from Marvel
Another once in a blue moon drawing of Samus if her Fusion Suit was a Symbiote. The one thing stopping me from drawing this AU more often is that I can't come up with good poses for it for my life. As such here she is in one of Dark Samus's poses from Smash Ultimate.

Geruta
Released: Apr. 1, 2023 Type: Enemy Game: Metroid
Striking from above, it's a fierce predator from the planet Zebes, Geruta! (Who did you think it would be?) Their heat-proof shell makes them immune to fire-based attacks and lava. In Super Smash Bros., they will harass you with relentless dive-bomb attacks. Time your attacks well or you'll be their lunch!
Geruta is one of my favorite creatures from the Metroid series, so I've wanted to make this model for a while now. However, I've always been unsure of how best to bring it to life because of how later games made Geruta progressively more and more grotesque. I eventually decided to stick with the look of the NES sprite, plus some added minor details based on real crabs. The eyes are inspired by some of the concept art for Metroid Prime.

My biggest gripe with Metroid ii on game boy, besides the modern QOL adjustments it really would have benefited from (teleport pads, maps, switching between beams on the options screen, etc.) is that it’s frustratingly linear. Metroid Fusion also struggled with this, but I think it’s worse in this game because of how you unlock new areas. Typically, in metroidvanias of all flavors, new areas are accessed via upgrades you obtain. Double jump, grappling hook, lava-proof suits, the usual. But here, the only way to progress to a new area is through defeating every Metroid in the previous one, which drains the acid in your way. I’m sure speedrunners have found ways to sequence break, but for the typical player, even if you’re brave and curious, you’re not going to be able to get anywhere the game doesn’t want you to go. The upgrades you get throughout the game, like the spider ball and space jump, ultimately don’t feel as cool or powerful because their usage is still highly constrained. The backtracking is minimal, which isn’t a bad thing here since some areas can be confusing and same-y, but feels extremely weird in a metroidvania. There’s no secret power ups you’ll find by going back to a previous area with new abilities. I’m just disappointed it was so railroad-y for a game with zero dialogue (it’s all in the manual, baby!) and a metroid game. However I admit I’m slightly biased because before I realized the Metroid kill count was linked to progression, I was backtracking quite a long ways to try and find new areas I could access, and upon learning what I was doing wrong I bashed my head against the wall.

Saw that it's pretty much confirmed that Prime 2 and 3 are coming to switch but are not going to be given the same remaster treatment and as much as I'm over the fucking MOON that Prime got remastered and that people are loving it, if they seriously just port over Prime 2 instead of giving it a touch up remaster like they did for Prime 1 then I'm going to blow a fuckin gasket. Prime 1 is super good and I know a lot of people have that one as a favorite, but if you are seriously going to look me in the eyes and say that Prime 2 doesn't deserve a remaster on the same level as Prime 1 then I'm going to be forced to revoke your brain and find out where it went wrong.
Think of the aesthetics!!!!! Torvus Bog, Sanctuary Fortress, and literally *all* of the places in Dark Aether would look fucking beautiful if given the same treatment as 1, not to mention little things like the Light Crystals and the bubbles of light they emit against the backdrop of Dark Aether and the Light/Dark/Annihilator beams and stuff that would fuckin POP, and if they seriously just slap it onto the switch in the form it was in on the Wii for Trilogy with minor changes to the control scheme and shit like that then I'm going to be extremely upset and angry at the missed opportunity. Of course I'll be happy it's on the switch at all, but to just throw it on the switch after giving Prime 1 a makeover, lip injections, and a boob job is just insulting considering that, in most aspects, Prime 2 is just as good if not outright better than Prime 1.

Metroid Dread spoilers:
It feels rare a character especially from Nintendo gets to fucking lose it and vent all their misfortune.
She needs real therapy and friendship but as far as we know Samus has been just taking the lumps of every game and her backstory
She finally got something that’s effectively responsible for most of her misfortune, arguably more than Ridley and more personal, and snaps
I think it’s finally a good ending point for her story, you can fit all the spinoffs in the timeline you want, but I think Metroid got a satisfying conclusion which is rare for a franchise
