Athena grew quickly. She heard her mother say that they’d need to get her a new pen. It was bigger, like her, and had lots of new things.

There were things to scratch here and every once in a while she could see Mother’s warmth behind one of the walls. There were other warmths that she could see as well. They’d keep their spots open for a moment, toss in meat, and leave. She didn’t understand why but- Mother was testing her skills.

That had to be it!

Well, Athena had never turned down a test before. When the oval started cracking and she defeated it, she was not only rewarded by a visit but a new area to play in. She’d make mother proud in no time.

Mother visited more often, more regularly. Athena must have passed the test. Her food comes from the sky, her mother watching, Athena couldn’t be happier.

Athena trills, ecstatic that her mother visited once again. She watches as Mother raise her voice at another being and she growls. Athena knows that sound.

The other is frightening Mother. It raises it’s filthy paw and Athena charges. She bangs her head repeatedly, scratching clawing anything until the other runs and Mother is all that’s left.

Athena calms down. Mother shortens her time between visits. Now she comes to visit her in what mother calls “months” and stays for an “hour.” Mother also has her “pen” “reinforced.”

No others go near Mother while in Athena’s sight. It brings her satisfaction.

Mother visits once, not according to schedule. Athena hears an other ask mother if she’s crying and mother sends them out. Then she sits in a chair and rants at Athena.

She listens all about this “date” mother had and she curls up against the wall Mother is in. If Athena ever meets this “board shorts date” she’ll tear him apart. Athena wakes the next morning and Mother is gone but Athena knows she won’t be away for long.

One of her first memories is falling. And then she’s caught in soft hands that slowly bring her up. Her savior is bright and it takes her eyes a bit to adjust.

“She’s beautiful isn’t she, Claire?” She hears from around her but she can never look away. Not from her savior. She nuzzles the soft paws as the being sets her back on the table.

“The Archaeornithomimus.” Her savior states. “Yes, she will do well.” At this, she feels something burst through her. She’ll do well?! She’ll do well!

“Go on Claire, name her.” Another being comes into view next to her savior and pats her savior- once only because she tells it off for her savior.

“Sir.” The savior sighs and looks her over. She straightens up. “Athena.” And she, no Athena, is excited and hears a couple high pitched sounds before realizing they came from herself as she starts moving around.

Her savior ends up catching her again.

“Mr. Wu, please ensure proper protections are placed on the hatching stations so there aren’t any incidents in the future.” Her savior sets her on the ground again but before they can move away this time Athena jumps on the paw again and starts nuzzling it.

“Look, Claire’s already being a protective mother.” And wasn’t that a shock. Athena’s savior is her mother? This is even better!!! Mother, mother, mother, she chants as she nuzzles into her paw.

Athena and mother stay together like that for a while but mother ends up having to leave. Mother and the other being leave while the third being in a coat stays. Athena recognized him to be a Mr. Wu that mother talked to.

Behind her she hears cracking. She turns to see an oval thing with a moving glow inside.

"Where did I go wrong?"

Remy's eyes haven't left the sign since Chen got here ten minutes ago. No flicker from them, no response as Chen asked if he has been seen yet (he knew the answer, but asked anyways). No habitual flinch as Chen moved to sit beside him on the bench, still no response as Chen grimaced at the sticky substance that coated the metal joints of his fingers when he sat down. Chen couldn't tell if it was Remy's or...

Well. Remy can be surprisingly stoic for one so soft and timid. Shirking off damage like it's nothing, fighting on in reckless abandon like a cornered mouse. Maybe that's another reason he doesn't trust Remy.

"... there was nothing you could've done," Chen says, letting his eyes leave the tear in black and bloody teal uniform where he suspects the liquid is leaking from. Letting them stare up at the bright vermillion sign.

In Operation.

It makes his stomach churn. He hates it. Hates staring at it. Hates not knowing if it will black out or turn green. Hates not knowing if it will be Julia carted out of there, worse for wear but patched up, or a corpse.

"Nothing is ever certain when we're sent out against an enemy like that. I'm... sure you did everything you could to protect Ortega."

Does he believe it? He wants to, despite every logical neuron in his brain telling him that maybe he's wrong, maybe he's reading Remy wrong, it's just a trap to make him think that Remy could care. He's not even upset, not even angry, or sad. Just staring, staring, staring, face blank, saying nothing but this, staring at the neon sign.

"Bullshit."

"Excuse m—"

"Bullshit!" Remy barks, and Chen is embarrassed that he's startled, embarrassed that he balks a bit as Remy shoots up. For all the delicate frame and short stature of the vigilante, there's something in his stance that screams danger in Chen's lungs, his fists, his hackles, raising his hair on end. Remy's stormy eyes look mad, the crimson light a halo on ink-black hair. He looks inhuman.

And for a moment, Chen pauses and wonders if he's ever seen Remy angry.

"You're so full of bullshit, Chen," his name is spat in his face as Remy grabs his shirt collar, and not even the glare that usually sends Remy into a submissive hunker can stop his eyes from burning through Chen's soul now. "I've already heard this stupid spiel from Themmy. How I did everything I could. How she's 'going to be okay,' that I can't tear myself up over what I did or didn't do. I know you, you know every little mistake I do, see every little bad decision I make on the field, you've torn me a-fucking-part before, so don't you dare hold back on me now."

He hasn't, hasn't ever seen him angry before, and maybe that's why he finds himself tongue-tied. Brain on mute, memorizing every detail, every wrinkle carved into that alabaster face, curved around bared teeth, framing the gap in the front. How strong those thin hands grasp the cloth of his shirt in a death grip. How those hurricane eyes look, watery, clouded, dripping onto his shirt, hands shaking and mouth shuddering around a barely-swallowed sob.

"I failed. I failed to protect her, and now I'm going to lose her."

Chen is not prepared for this.

"I should have run faster. I should have been smarter. Oh, god, did I ever suggest that we split up?"

Anathema should be here for this, not him.

"Fuck, Chen... I did this to her. I fucked up, and it got to her, spilled her guts open, and oh god, I- they were so warm in my hands, I- fuck, oh god, I killed her. I messed up, I was too late, and I killed her and I'm never going to see her again and I—"

"Shh," Chen whispers, slowly, gently, enough for Remy to bolt if he wanted, to shove him away and disappear, circling his arms around Remy. Pulling him closer as the youngster gasps for breath amidst his sobs, feeling all of his years as Remy curls into him. Like his little sister used to. "It's not your fault. Come here."

He doesn't know how long he stays there. Arms around Remy, holding him close, listening to him sob. Miserable. Unsure if he's helping. Feeling conflicted that he cares enough to want to. Wishing he just knew if Julia is going to be alright. Wishing that stupid red sign would turn green. Wishing he could believe it when he says it's not Remy's fault. Being glad the hospital has built-in dampeners so Remy can't pick that thought up while he's sniffling and cradled in Chen's arms.

He really is the worst person for this.

Obsessed girl who sees all your masochism posting and decides that she has to "cure" you. So she kidnaps you, sets you up an an adorable "safe" kennel room with nothing that could cause you pain, and tries to get you to promise that you'll get "better" for her.

You beg her to let you go, but she assures you that that's just the masochism talking, wanting to let you get hurt again. Because any reasonable person would see that here in her arms, you'll never have to get hurt, which is what anyone would want. You beg her to hurt you, but she starts crying and telling you that that's the bad part of you speaking, that she's here to help, you don't have to live like that anymore.

You spend the next few days hissing at her, begging her to hurt you or let you go, banging your head on the padded carrying crate and whacking yourself with too-soft cat toys, and she gives you your meals in silence, sometimes with tears on her face.

Finally, at one of your feedings, she comes in crying, and she hugs you tight and tells you that she understands that it's so hard to fight the bad part of yourself all by yourself, that she was being so cruel in making you do this all alone. She shouldn't expect her kitten to be able to quit this addiction cold turkey, that she's willing to help you if you're willing to accept her help in getting better. She tells you that she'll give you what you want, hurt you--for real this time--if you promise that she'll be the only one who gets to hurt you ever again.

This is so fucked up we should probably go on a long walk through a not very public part of town to talk about this

Sorry, I just realized part of the ask was “how would it go” and have decided to add on to fix it.

He ran after it. His heart beating fast as it started to lower to the ground. Pausing for just a moment, he launched himself into the air and bit down to grab it.

To celebrate his victory he shook the thing a couple times before he brought back his catch. His human stroking his head as they took his catch out of his mouth. When they stopped petting him, he trained his eyes on their hand.

They had better not-

They let the prey go again! Silly human, no worries. He’s a good boy so he’ll bring it back really quick.

His legs start moving and he gives a bark. Even if his human is a bit clumsy, at least they have time to be with him today.

No dialogue is easy. So if I was trying to do something I know I can do right, that’d be it.

Currently, I’m writing for my friend who’s really in victim turned bamf. I have a lot of it without her speaking because she’s ✨traumatized✨ and trying to escape.

I don’t know why but whenever I write dialogue I go over it like 600+ times because it never feels right to me.

ive had several people tell me that my take on teruhashi is overdramatized but like. it genuinely isnt and i say that with my whole chest.

i KNOW that the girls in saiki k are written pretty stereotypically and yeah im 100% sure that asou didnt really mean to make his character a deep take on beauty standards and misogyny, but he was writing a parodied take on the perfect girl trope and focused a lot on how people objectify her and how shes never truly satisfied because shes always trying to fit what men want from her... so thats how it turned out. im not overdramatizing it, im just using more descriptive terms for it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Review

Based on what bits I had gleaned from pop culture, I had expected this book to be very different than it was. I was expecting it to be simple. I was expecting it to really try to be scary. Possibly good if you're into monster stories, maybe some content to make you sad, but really not much to make you think.

What I got was very different. On scary, it's a terrifying situation, but the book is honestly more of a tragedy than a horror. I didn't come away from it scared, I came away from it more contemplative (and pondering happy aus).

For my thoughts without spoilers, this book was better than I had thought it would be. I'm generally not into horror, but it's a compelling story. It's pretty easy to read. If you have any amount of interest in reading the book I suggest you do so. The one thing I will warn you about is that Victor (the main character) gets into a relationship with his cousin/adoptive sibling (so a bit of incest tones).

some advice if you haven't read the book 1. don't rely on (or honestly even read or watch) a summary before checking out the book. everyone who's read it has certain opinions about the characters (I'm mainly talking Victor Frankenstein, but this applies to the other characters too) and I think the experience is better if you don't have your opinion on the characters influenced by others beforehand. 2. be prepared for it take awhile to get to the monster stuff. 3. there are 2 versions of Frankenstein (story is basically the same, but the later publication was heavily edited) it was first published in 1818, and an edited version was published in 1831. The later one tends to be the more popular one. If you want to read the original version, you may have to specify like "frankenstein 1818"

My thoughts with some spoilers are under the cut. I strongly recommend you do not read anything under the cut unless you have read the entire book already.

Characters

Victor Frankenstein

A self-centered asshole with no regard for consequences. I applaud Mary Shelley for being able to get me invested in Victor's life. I do not usually get invested in asshole protagonists. I generally want my protagonist to be a good person, but Victor Frankenstein is not a good person.

However, he is interesting and honestly, pretty understandable. He's not the most relatable protagonist in that he's far more privileged than the vast majority of people (he's part of a wealthy and very accepting of him family, he's extremely scientifically intelligent) though there were a couple of moments where I found him to be a relatable character.

I understood why he was making terrible decisions, but I still wanted to slap him.

the Creature

I was kind of surprised about his character. He's beautiful and intelligent, which I did not expect when I started the book. While he's sympathetic, he very much is a monster. I did feel sorry for him, but also he's a murderer and he knows murder is wrong, so it's not like he's really someone to root for.

Henry Clerval

Elizabeth

Was she even really a character? Ok, I didn't really care about her. Her death was sad I guess, but I wasn't really sad about her dying so much as annoyed at Victor for not thinking of someone other than himself for two seconds. She seems to exist to show us what the Frankenstein's are like (only willing to adopt her because she's blonde) and to be murdered to hurt Victor. She is Victor's canon love interest, but she didn't really have chemistry with him. Normally I don't really do the 'going for non-canon gay couple over canon straight couple' thing fandom likes to do, but in this case there is actually more chemistry between Victor and Henry than there is between Victor and Elizabeth. Plus Victor and Henry aren't related and weren't raised as siblings so...

We don't really get Elizabeth's thoughts on her relationship with Victor, which is basically her entire character once she's been taken in by the Frankenstein's, and what little we do get I'm not sure can be entirely trusted.

Non character stuff

I was slightly annoyed at how long it took to get through Robert Walton's section at the beginning. I don't dislike him, but I knew this wasn't his story so I spent chunk of his part thinking 'get to the story already!' I get what Shelley was doing, though I think that part could have been a little shorter.

Aside from that, I don't have any complaints. The book is really good. I felt for both Victor and the creature. While I'm not gonna want to read it all the time, I do think I will revisit this book more than once.

Starting easy: Liz and Robin r lust, Joshua is pride if either of those need explaining, go listen to the podcast

Thalia also gets to be lust bcuz theyre too well adjusted and the only thing that rlly fits any of the sins is that they wanna fuck Noa and Jade a little bit

Jamie is every sin, at once, BUT if i have to choose one, it's gonna b envy shes so jealous of how everyone views her younger sibling as mature and smart while everyone thinks she's a fuck up

Graham, Graham my bbgirl, his sin is greed or pride

For greed: He wants to have the joy of getting a second and doing what feels like his lifes work and he wants to avoid the emotional backlash from the ppl he loves, but he can't have both

For pride: Him refusing to let Joshua speak at points in the beginning and being initially hesitant to say things how Joshua would say them bcuz he views Joshua as too harsh! Bcuz he believes his morality is superior to Joshua's he limits Joshua's autonomy (good thing for humanity (elon musk), but Joshua's not a fan)

Morgan is wrath! She gets so judgey so quick and fights abt it and it's pretty reasonable tbfuckingh, but it doesn't make her the nicest person

Travis is oooooh boy, independently his sin is sloth, he doesn't act for anything he wants, then feels miserable for not getting it (think the Morgan & Travis "I will let u fuck me" "uh no sorry I can't for uhhhhhh reasons scene"), but with the influence of Parker and Liam his sin is envy all the way he's jealous of everyone who got the things he never did and he's acting on it

Parker and Liam's combined sin is gluttony, they overfeed themselves on pain and power, dining on it with no concern for others (tho tbh a good amount of the sins could fit these bastards)

Brooke and Deidre r pride, they think their methods r the correct ones, the superior ones, and that they have it right, ofc compared to Joshua they kinda r, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
