"Journey to the Center of the Chicken Bucket" Clip
Raven looked over. “Hen, are you okay? What’s your name?”
“Henry
”
“What happened before you blacked out?” asked Raven, calmly.
“Besides you and Ellie switching bodies?” Henry blinked.
“...About Alivia?”
Henry thought about it. “Buzz and Frances were talking- apparently Frances was a crack baby.”
“Do you remember anything else?”
“There was a knock at the door.”
“And?” “And a girl named Alivia was there
and
she
” He gulped.
“...she’s related to Frances.”
“Yep, that would make anyone faint.” Raven mused.
“Hey.” Henry scolded.

4. Favourite historical era?
I seem to be drawn to French and Mediterranean history, and 18th century in particular. French Revolution of course, but anything 18th century it seems. They were so messy it's irresistible. The pettiness, the decadence, the "wtf dude" anecdotes... I think it's because 18th century is a curious era where the world starts to resemble the one we live in, but it's also completely different. The origins of "our world" so to speak (for better or worse).
Also, I love history of science in general. Not that it's an era, but still. Honourable mention: Ancient Greece high Middle Ages (idk if it's still a correct way to call it that), 16th century France 7. Historical dressing, uniform or costume? Hmm not sure what they mean by this. Favourite clothing style/item?
I must admit I am feral for 1790s style men's coats. Those were a perfection. The high collar, the shape... Everything.
I also love late 18th century corsets and soo wish to get one but the best replicas are like 500 dollars. :( Also, not strictly favourite but I love Directoire uniforms unironically. If anyone makes a frev themed Halloween party you just know I am dressing up like this:
Tumblr media
9. Favourite historical film?
This is easy! Not the best by any measure, but "La Reine Margot" (1994) was my everything when I was 13 and no other historical film ever made me bi impressed like this one.
24. Most underrated historical figure? 25. Most overrated historical figure in your opinion?
I legit need to think about this. It's difficult for me to gauge who is underrated and who is overrated. Edison was super overrated but this is luckily changing (go Nikola Tesla!) Maybe they can be the answers to this question.
26. Forgotten hero we should know about and admire?
The first one that comes to mind is Michel Lepeletier. I suppose there are many others but he is the first one I thought about. Probably because I am the first guilty of almost forgetting about him. But I am sure there are others I can think of.
29. Great historical mystery you are interested in?
Ooh here, too, I need to figure out what is known as a historical mystery. There are so many but I am blanking at the moment. Anyway, not a colossal mystery but I really (really really) want to know if there was truly a Foreign Conspiracy in frev started out by baron Batz (and other royalists?) and wtf that whole mess was about. (Including, of course, was there a mole in the CSP and if yes, who was it?)
Thank you for asking! :)

"Oh Promise Me" Marie Rappold (composer Reginald De Koven for "Robin Hood") lyrics by Clement Scott
Marie Rappold sings "Oh Promise Me."
This song composed by Reginald De Koven was once famous.
It was first sung in 1887 in a musical show titled Robin Hood.
This performance on Edison Amberol 28029 is from 1913.
Lyrics are by Clement Scott.
Oh, promise me that someday you and I Will take our love together to some sky Where we may be alone and faith renew, And find the hollows where those flowers grew, Those first sweet violets of early spring, Which come in whispers, thrill us both, and sing Of love unspeakable that is to be; Oh, promise me! Oh, promise me!
Oh, promise me that you will take my hand, The most unworthy in this lonely land, And let me sit beside you in your eyes, Seeing the vision of our paradise, Hearing God's message while the organ rolls Its mighty music to our very souls, No love less perfect than a life with thee; Oh, promise me! Oh, promise me!
Oh Promise Me is a song with music by Reginald De Koven and lyrics by Clement Scott. The song was written in 1887 and first published in 1889 by G. Schirmer, Inc. as an art song. It is believed that De Koven based the melody of "O Promise Me" partly on "Music Proibita", a popular song by Italian composer Stanislao Gastaldon. In 1890, De Koven wrote his most successful comic opera, Robin Hood. After opening night, the contralto playing Alan-a-Dale, Jessie Bartlett Davis, demanded a song to better show off her voice, threatening to walk out of the production. De Koven inserted "Oh Promise Me" into the score for her.
The sheet music sold over a million copies in 1890 and continued to gain popularity for several decades, being performed by many artists. The song remains popular as a wedding song both in America and in the UK. In 1957, American vocal group The Platters recorded a cover of the song, with authorship credited solely to the group's manager Buck Ram, with no mention of the original composers.
Robin Hood is a comic opera by Reginald De Koven (music), Harry B. Smith (lyrics) and Clement Scott (lyrics of "Oh Promise Me"). The story is based on the Robin Hood legend, during the reign of King Richard I (1189-1199 AD). The opera was composed in Chicago, Illinois during the winter of 1888-1889.
The opera was first performed at the Chicago Opera House on 9 June 1890. It was produced by the Boston Ideal Opera Company, also known as the Bostonians. The opera opened in New York at the Standard Theatre on September 22, 1891 and was produced in London at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1891 with a new title, Maid Marian. It was revived at the Knickerbocker Theater on Broadway on April 30, 1900. Other Broadway revivals were in 1902 at the Academy of Music, in 1912 at New Amsterdam Theatre with Walter Hyde in the title role, in 1918 at the Park Theatre, in 1929 at the Casino Theatre and Jolson's 59th Street Theatre, in 1932 at Erlanger's Theatre, and in 1944 at the Adelphi Theatre.
Marie Rappold (17 August 1872 – 12 May 1957) Opera Singer. She was a dramatic soprano who sang in many of the world's leading opera houses. Born to a German family that moved to Brooklyn, New York City, New York when she was about five, she studied voice with Oscar Saenger, and sang with the Amberg German Opera Company. Her Metropolitan Opera debut was on November 22, 1905, in Karl Goldmark's "The Queen of Sheba". From then until 1920, she sang 198 performances of 23 different roles with the company, being particularly known for the title character in "Aida". Her first appearances in Paris, France were in 1908, and she made her Milan, Italy debut in 1911. Early in her career, she was an exclusive artist with Edison Studios during the World War I years, which ran a marketing campaign in which they would set up a top-of-the line Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph, have a live singer present, darken the theatre, and ask the audience to guess which was which; Madame Rappold was the "live" singer for the first demonstration, at Carnegie Hall, on April 28, 1916. In 1922, she appeared in a short film made by Lee De Forest using his Phonofilm process, an early experiment in linking sound to video. She sang in the world premiere of Frank Patterson's "The Echo" in 1925, and once performed "Aida" in Yankee Stadium. She left a large legacy of recordings, made with both Edison and Victor.

Oooooooh I have a lot of historical hear me outs out the main people I'd out on that cake are
Nicholas ii- I know his position as Tsar wasn't the greatest but man he was fine asf. Not to mention he was a good father and husband which is very admirable of a man. Him, his family, and the other people who decided to stay with him at Ipatiev House didn't deserve to be murdered in such a cruel way
Robert F. Kennedy- *sigh* Bobby, the cinnamon roll of the family. The compassion he had for others is something to be admired, the way he understood their pain and tried his best to make changes for the better is what has always fascinated me about him. He was taken from us too soon, and every time I watch Bobby Kennedy for President I bawl my eyes out when they get to his assassination
Nikola Tesla- It's weird I know but blame Super Science Friends for this!! And fuck Thomas Edison. He gave us the lightbulb but man really electrocuted animals to discredit Tesla's AC (alternating current)
Joachim Murat- Another controversial figure, many people dislike him for betraying Napoleon near the end of the war, but there's a lot more to his character than being a traitor, his bravery and even recklessness was something I've admired of him. Plus, he got a fat ass xD
Napoleon Bonaparte (of course!!)- Ah yes, the emperor himself. Napoleon was literally him, he went from being a boy coming from a minor Italian nobility to the emperor of France and conqueror of almost half of Europe, he's literally him
Arthur Wellesley- I KNOW I KNOW! I know what you're thinking, how can I possibly like both Napoleon AND Wellington? Hey, mans was pretty attractive and I gotta give it to him, him along with the Prussians defeated the most powerful man in Europe, of course there were other factors at play but they still managed to defeat Napoleon
Aight enough of me yapping I'm tagging
@purperla @isa-ko @ic-napology @promises-of-paradise
Calling history nerds 🚹🚹🚹
Which historical figure(s) would you put on your hear me put cake?
I would put Thaddeus Kosciuszko and Ulysses S Grant on ofc :) (They can also be someone just for goofiness)
hear me out cake example:

tell me about ur beef with thomas edison...
OKAY SO
There are two big things he's known for: the war of the currents and stuff involving animals. The former was a competition between AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) electricity. AC was high voltage, DC low voltage. Edison was a DC man I think. Now I'm boiling things down a lot here but to get to Edison's role in things, he didn't like how George Westinghouse was a new competitor on the electricity market (Edison still dabbled in electricity at the time) and was like "Hey I have an idea. Let's make sure the first electric chairs are powered by Westinghouse electricity to show people how dangerous it is and then everyone will favor me instead" so he worked with Westinghouse's main rival and did exactly that and Edison "won" through some deeply underhanded means but that's important for later, to show he's a piece of shit
The OTHER thing is the animals. I won't go into it but just take my word for it that it was not good by any means
My main issue with him, save for the everything about animals I won't go into is my personal one-man crusade championing Louis Le Prince over Thomas Edison as the father of film and I'll die screaming it.
The oldest surviving film is from 1888, only a couple seconds long if that, called "Roundhay Garden Scene" as filmed by Louis Le Prince featuring family members. It predates Edison, the Lumiere brothers, everyone that's ever mentioned in film history, Le Prince's film comes before ALL of them. That is a historical fact. He also shot a few other short films, like "Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge" which is likewise two seconds, and those were on his single lens camera, before that was his 16 lens camera which was patented in 1886-87 I believe? Anyway, Le Prince in 1890 is gonna head to England to do some more patents but stops to visit family first within France before heading to England. His brother sees him off at the train station, and that's the last Louis Le Prince is ever seen because he never made it to his destination. He was gone, his luggage was gone, there was no trace of the man and he was declared legally dead in 1897. I personally don't subscribe to the "he killed himself" theory for a variety of reasons it just doesn't make sense but just because someone doesn't appear outwardly suicidal doesn't mean they aren't so on and so on
Back in college I had a podcast (crowd boo's) and one episode I did was on Thomas Edison and Louis Le Prince because I'd known about it for years. So I do digging as I'm writing the script and I find this article about I believe an NYU student who was doing a paper or project on Edison and found an old journal in this library, I can't remember the minute details but they believed the diary to be his due to drawings and dates and inventions and so on. One of the entries is dated a few days after Le Prince's disappearance wherein Edison writes that "It is done" and Le Prince is dead and murder "wasn't his thing" and the student got permission to check out the diary and get handwriting analysis etc etc the diary is confirmed to be Edison's. To be fair handwriting analysis is an interesting forensics field to say the least of I don't want to say dubious quality but it's very tricky and complicated like most fields of forensics that don't rely on like hard science.
But if it IS the case that was Edison's journal, then he hired someone or multiple someone's to kill Louis Le Prince before some years later Edison could roll up and be like "hey guys I have a GREAT new invention." Though it would not be the first time he stole an idea or anything from anyone and certainly was not the last! Man was a menace
There's also a trial of his company versus this other company Mutoscope that was like "Hey you didn't invent film" and Edison's company was like "Uh yeah we did" and Mutoscope called up Le Prince's widow to testify as well as their son, Adolphe, who worked closely with his dad. The caveat is they couldn't introduce any of Le Prince's cameras or works into the trial because then they'd be testifying on HIS behalf and not Mutoscope's so the trial very quickly went to and ruled in Edison's favor but that was overturned some time after. His son, I don't remember how old he was he was in his 20s at least, during the trial said something along the lines of how he "knew too much" then a bit later after the trial was found dead when he was duck hunting on Fire Island and they couldn't determine if he died in accident, shot himself, or was murdered, but Le Prince's widow/Adolphe's mom is convinced Edison's people took her son out
Like it's a LOT of stuff about Edison there's a lot more to him and I'm picking the few things I know a little to a lot about. I know less about his role in the war of the currents than I do the film side of Edison, but basically fuck Edison I'll meet him in hell and my friends in college knew better than to get me started on him because I will not shut the fuck up until everyone knows he (probably) had a man murdered for an invention so that's my beef with him <3

I’m starting a new job soon and have a lot of free time on my hands so you bet your ass I made an entire Servant profile for a Saber Lafayette concept.
Name: Lafayette
Alignment: Lawful Good
Attribute: Star
Rank: 4*
Class: Saber
Class Skills: Riding (A)
Traits: Human / Servant / Brynhildr’s Beloved
Active Skills: Charisma (B) - Increase the attack of all allies for three turns. / Golden Rule (A) - Greatly increase NP gain for three turns. / Unshakable Ideals (A+) Apply invincible and self-heal for three turns.
Character Information:
Gilbert du Moutier, Marquis de Lafayette - young revolutionary of the enlightenment era, a French nobleman who became a hero for the United States when he was just nineteen years old. His Noble Phantasm recreates the Battle of Yorktown, when the British finally surrendered to the Continental Army.
Bond 1: “Lafayette is normally a member of the Rider class. However, due to the strength of his ideals, he is also capable of this manifestation.”
Bond 2: “Volunteered to fight in the American War for Independence when he was a teenager. Due to his nobility in France, he was quickly given a high rank and distinguished himself in battle. The sword he wields is a gift commissioned by the Continental Congress to thank him for his services after the war.”
Bond 3: “CHARISMA - He seemed to the Americans ‘a knight in shining armor,’ proof that the ideals enshrined in the revolution were possible and supported by European allies. He was able to successfully rally and command troops even when he had been injured.
GOLDEN RULE - One of the richest nobles in France, at a time when French nobles were among the richest people on Earth. However, he famously endured the hardships of winter at Valley Forge along with the American troops.”
Bond 4: “UNSHAKABLE IDEALS - Lafayette’s personal skill, which affects his manifestation in a way similar to Marie Antoinette’s Beautiful Princess. A student of the liberal enlightenment era, an opponent of bigotry and oppression in all forms. When the War for Independence ended, Lafayette declared, ‘Humanity’s battle is won - liberty now has a country!’ because he genuinely believed that the United States would become a nation exemplifying the best of human freedom and equality.”
Bond 5: “It’s possible that his idealism is not simply naivety. He was given great responsibilities at a young age due to his family situation, and endured hardships during and after in the war. He greatly missed his wife and children while fighting. However, he simply believed that fighting in the revolution was the right thing to do, for the sake of all humankind. For his contributions to the fight for freedom, he was made an honorary citizen of the United States and is known as ‘the Hero of Two Worlds.’”
EXTRA: “After returning to France, Lafayette took a leadership position and continued to practice politics, hoping to bring democracy and human rights to his country. When the revolution came to France, his ideals were shaken and challenged in many more complex ways due to the different circumstances, and as a result of his actions there, his reputation at home is very different from his reputation in the United States. In the Saber class, he becomes the ‘heroic’ Lafayette, who represents the founding dream of the American nation, a dream where all humans are created as equals and are able to freely express their rights. It is not possible to summon this Lafayette in France.”
BONUS CHARACTER INTERACTION IDEAS!
Marie Antoinette: “Your Majesty! I don’t know if you would remember me... Oh, so you do remember? Ahaha, well, in that case, if you’ll excuse me...”
Thomas Edison: “Presi-King? What does that even mean!? It doesn’t make any sense! Pick one or the other!”
Napoleon: “Listen, it’s fine now since we’re all here, working together for the benefit of all mankind. But please don’t ask me to try and get along with him. It’s not that I hate him. It’s just the principle of the thing.”
Billy the Kid: “You know what’s funny? Many of my old friends said that the revolution began as an act of treason against the British Empire. So it seems to me that maybe being an outlaw is an American tradition!”
Jeanne d’Arc: “The patron saint of my country! You’re just as I imagined you!”
MY NOTES:
So, I feel like the profile is pretty self-explanatory... He’s deliberately designed in a way that I’m sure would’ve gotten him ripped to shreds in the first five minutes of Fate/Zero because we ALL remember how that one turned out. But I think, looking at the members of the Saber class, qualifying requires a bit of idealism or perfectionism. Think Saber!Diarmuid personifying chivalry and the purity of honorable battle; Nero becoming uncomplicated and charismatic due to her own narcissistic belief that she was a superb and generous leader; even Lancelot, who openly believes that his natural class is Berserker due to his flawed personality, represents “King Arthur’s ideal knight” as a Saber. Personally, I really like the symbolism in parts of what I imagine Lafayette’s character kit to be like - a Noble Phantasm that acts as a sort of Reality Marble that recreates the final great battle of the Revolution, an act which Lafayette believed would seal the deal on the first step to a more enlightened and free world; his Star attribute, his third skill that explicitly compares him to FGO’s idealized Marie Antoinette; he uses a sword that was meant to be ornamental as a weapon; etc.
Basically I think that FGO isn’t going to add a lot of American revolutionary heroes because a) that doesn’t suit their primary target audience, which is not made up of Americans or even nerds who like the Enlightenment or learning about the ideas in the French Revolution; b) they basically opted out of it already by giving “the power of American presidents” to Thomas Edison as a “Mystic Code that represents America.” But I also L O V E Lafayette and think he’d make an excellent Heroic Spirit/addition to the game just in general, so I want them to find an excuse for him to be added.
However, I would also argue that BECAUSE Thomas Edison’s character is being used to represent “American leadership,” or even “the American Dream (of hard work and success paying off)”, then Saber!Lafayette should be added because he represents “American idealism.” He’d play that role a LOT better than anyone else in the pantheon of “potential American heroic spirits,” and especially when you consider the other major figures of the Revolutionary War; and he also fits in with the 18th Century French gang that Chaldea’s already got going on; AND they added Napoleon as a Star-attribute Heroic Spirit when Napoleon was like, objectively a worse person than Lafayette even when Lafayette was making the most problematic and complex decisions of his life. (Not to mention, like, everything about Marie Antoinette - who to be fair, I really like as a character in FGO! But we can’t pretend that she counts among Least Historically Accurate personalities.)
Anywho, I just really like Lafayette. He was good and I love him.

Show Notes 103 "Magnetism"
Agents, you are getting sleepy
 Very sleepy

Click play on the player above to listen to this week’s episode while you read, if you so choose.
Wow! We covered so much this week! Where to start
 Where to start

Well, first of all, we had a lovely Warehouse Agent from our Patreon page where people can be Patrons for our show (Hey, did I mention we have a Patreon) introduce us!
This week’s Warehouse Agent was a representative from Emp-RSS.com, an online presence dedicated to empowering women to find their voice and providing mentors for young women entering the workforce. I can’t think of a Patron more appropriate to Myka’s arc this episode.
So, the first thing we had questions about was what all the jurisdictions were for the Secret Service, CIA, FBI, and NSA. I linked the answers above, They’re pretty dry, BUT—
The interesting thing I found—as a person who is decidedly NOT a law enforcement agent or a lawyer—is that basically the Secret Service’s jurisdiction is basically whatever protects presidents, vice presidents, former presidents and their spouses and children. Unlike other agencies that have geologically defined jurisdictions, the Secret Service’s jurisdiction seems pretty vague. I can definitely see how that could be exploited by the Warehouse. Pete and Myka are technically protecting those people but also protecting, like, literally everyone else in the world. LOL.
The episode opened with Pete and Myka in France taking the blade of the guillotine that took the life (and head!) of Marie Antoinette. Want to know more about Marie Antoinette and her grizzly end? Boy, oh boy do the History Chicks have you covered! They have an amazingly detailed and informative two part episode dedicated to her fascinating life—there was much more to her than a beheading and a misquote about some cake (Part 1, Part 2). The link to each part links to the audio for each episode as well as the show notes for each respective section. Don’t worry about the fact that the episode is called a “reboot.” You’re not missing something. The first episode of the History Chicks ever recorded was about Marie Antoinette, and it was very poor audio quality. They deleted the original file, re-recorded the episode, and included new information the second time around—hence, reboot.
Still not enough Marie? Don’t worry! There’s more! On the History Chicks’ side podcast, The Recappery, they recap the 2006 film, Marie Antoinette. That episode is also a two-parter (Part 1, Part 2).
There are so many emotional moments in Marie Antoinette’s life that could have led to the creation of artifacts. The History Chicks cover those and anything else you want to know, too! They did a series of Biography Channel mini-documentaries on famous historical women. Three(!) of them focused on Marie Antoinette: a general one about her life, one about the scandalous but rarely discussed affair of the diamond necklace, and one about her small house called the Petit Trianon on the grounds of Versailles.
Moving on, we talked about the famous Mission Impossible scene that Pete was attempting to imitate with perhaps, ahem, a tad less grace. This is the image we were talking about:
Miranda brilliantly discussed the importance of Affect Theory to the Warehouse and its artifacts. Here’s a very brief overview about that.
Miranda made a reference to the purple goo shower that Artie inflicted on Myka and Pete being like slime. For those who didn’t grow up watching the American television network, Nickelodeon, here’s what you need to know about getting slimed. It was a huge thing when we were growing up. On kid/family game shows on Nick (the affectionate slang name for Nickelodeon Network), contestants who lost or got a wrong answer or who won a prize were punished/rewarded with being slimed—i.e. having green goo rained down upon you from above. Why were punishments and rewards both related to slime??? 1) Because it’s always funny to see adults have copious amounts of green goop poured onto adults heads. 2) It supposedly tasted like vanilla pudding!
To this day, adults attending or presenting at the Kids Choice Awards (presented by Nick) should be wary
anybody can be slimed.
We also mentioned that Myka and Jill share a love of True Religion flap-pocket jeans. Here’s what those are.
We talked about the collaborative involvement between M.C. Escher, Nikola Tesla, and Thomas Edison in the early days of the Warehouse.
Tesla and Edison didn’t like each other very much. And the internet is full of links that can fill you in as to why. I wouldn’t even know where to start. So, instead, please enjoy this rap battle between Tesla and Edison from the legendary Epic Rap Battles of History YouTube channel. (I can’t speak for Miranda, but I am totally #TeamTesla).
We also went into a little more detail on M.C. Escher. In particular, we discussed his art works, Relativity and Drawing Hands.
We also discussed his vital contributions to science and to mathematics (Math Link 1, Math Link 2).
Jill also talked about how much second-hand embarrassment she felt when Myka started talking about how much she hated men to Father Braid. Here’s actual footage of Jillian watching that scene.
That scene and earlier discussions of Myka’s feminist rage led to a discussion about the Bechdel Test. The test is a huge part of feminist theory, media studies, and film studies. And, honestly, it’s a super low bar that you’d be astounded how few pieces of media even reach. Want to see if your favorite movie passes the test? Click here! There’s actually a film festival dedicated to celebrating films that pass the test. The theory is not without its critics, however. Many people think that the bar of the Bechdel Test is not high enough and we need to expect more of female representation in media than their mere existence in scenes together and the absence of discussions about men. I’m inclined to agree that we should expect more, but I also think that the Bechdel Test is still a great way to assess if a piece of media is able to do a basic job of representing women on screen. Interested in the criticism? There’s an op-ed from The Washington Post and The Verge that might pique your interest.
When discussing magnetism, with Jill and with our incredible and intelligent guest, Kameron Sanzo, Miranda mentioned her (not really) favorite song (LOL). Here’s that song that asks the ever important question, “Fuckin’ Magnets. How do they work?!”
If you’re actually interested, this is how magnets work.
Anyway

Other things Miranda discussed with our guest, Kameron Sanzo, include animal magnetism and mesmerism as well as hypnosis. Some cursory information about the founder of Mesmerism, Anton Mesmer, can be found here. A fun exploration of mesmerism can be found in the eleventh episode of the Audible original podcast, Stephen Fry’s Victorian Secrets, which has been linked before in a previous episode’s show notes, because of its relevance to Spiritualism. You can purchase the podcast from Amazon or with an Audible subscription.
Of course, this episode would not be complete without addressing the creator of this week’s artifact, James Braid. There was some discussion of the similarities and differences between hypnosis and mesmerism especially before and after the development of the scientific method.
Now, I’m not a doctor.
(And yes, I know that fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation just said “Not a doctor” in the voice from the end credits. Don’t worry, Internet. I’ve provided a clip of that for you, also)
Now that we’ve got that out of the way

I’m not a doctor and don’t want to seem like I know too much about the evolution and modern usage of hypnosis/hypnotherapy in a medical sense. But what I can say is that—while mesmerism is widely understood by scientists to not be a real thing—hypnotherapy is actually still quite relevant to modern medicine. Its origin may share the outlandish nature of mesmerism. However, there is apparently a difference between traditional and modern hypnosis. There is also a difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy. The Mayo Clinic goes into more detail on the topic as does Psychology Today.
Kameron Sanzo also compared mesmerism and hypnosis with Reiki. Here’s a couple links that provide more information on what Reiki is (Link 1, Link 2).
Finally, we also discussed the use of filmic language and angles and how they can induce feelings of fear and anxiety. No one was better at this than Alfred Hitchcock. Here’s some information on the filmic language he created (high-angle shots, other techniques).
Now, let’s delve into some ~Heavy Themes~
We gave a shout-out to Eddie McClintock to celebrate his 18 years of sobriety! A monumental achievement!

"Chaos is Like a Butterfly" Clip
Avery and Bob looked at each other. “So, who’s gonna wake Wheeler?” Avery whispered.
Nate nudged him-
“-huh- Anne?”
“Noooooooooo. It’s the sexy LexiKitty ripoff, Nate. But NaterTot never picked up and went viral.” Nate smirked.
“...Where’s the others- did they leave to jinx Booloo without me?” Beat.
“...Oh

” Wheeler sat up. “I mean-”
“WHAT?!” Nate facepalmed. “Charlie, spill it!”
“Uh oh

“HOW BONED?!?” “...yeah

.” Wheeler sweated.
“You are lucky we are letting you off the hook THIS TIME!” Nate said. “You look like you genuinely don’t know where the other four are, nor did you realize you were blabbering about a jinx. We’re letting you off this once. So DON’T blow it!”
“Wha-”
Nate tossed them the Hino compact.
Wheeler looked around. “I have the weirdest feeling I’m still dreaming.”
“No. You’re not.” Buzz bluntly stated.

After Il Ă©tait une fois... la Vie
After the enormous success of Once upon a time
Life, Albert Barillé went on with new versions of Il était une fois
His next instalment, purely French, was Il était une fois
les Amérique (Once upon a time
Americas), aired between 1991 and 1992.
Tumblr media
This show was supposed to be a complement of Once upon a time
Man, because Il Ă©tait une fois
l’Homme was very European-centric and only mentionned the history and development of other continents like Africa, Asia and America. So this show wanted to correct this flaw by being only about the history of the American continent. In 26 episodes we talk about the Native Indians, the Mesoamerican civilizations, Christopher Colombus, CortĂ©s and the conquistadors, the Thirteen colonies, The Revolutionary War, slavery and the Gold Rush. We still have the same animators, the same cast, again music by Michel Legrand. While it was mainly a French production, other European countries helped in the making: Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and Finland.
However, Il Ă©tait une fois
les AmĂ©riques wasn’t a huge success. It wasn’t a bad show, it had a good rating and was popular in France and other countries. But it just wasn’t as huge as the first three shows. It was a fairly normal and good show, but couldn’t reach the cult level of the first shows. Associating that with the change of generations, hence a change in audience, and the new big shows that appeared in the 90s, the Il Ă©tait une fois
mania slowly started to fade out. While the original series stayed, loved and cherished, the new products started to be neglected and forgotten. An example is that, after Il Ă©tait une fois
les Amériques, the number of other countries involved in the making of the shows slowly diminished.
Tumblr media
In 1994 was launched “Il Ă©tait une fois
les DĂ©couvreurs” (Once upon a time
The Discoverers), about the great discoveries of History, and it goes from the Chinese and Archimedes to Einstein and Armstrong, passing by Pasteur, Edison, Lavoisier, Galileo, Da Vinci and other well-known people.
In 1997, there was “Il Ă©tait une fois
les Explorateurs » (Once upon a time
the explorers), about the great geographical discoveries. In 26 episodes you discover the stories of Alexander the Great, Erik the Red, Magellan, Vespucci, Vasco de Gama and other ones whose names marked History. Interestingly, the last episodes of this show are reviewing all of the previous shows “Il Ă©tait une fois
”, so this series was probably planned to be the last one of the franchise.
[ TV Tropes mentions another series, aired in 2008, called “Il Ă©tait une fois
la Musique”, that was only aired in Spain. Now
I don’t know what were TV Tropes’ sources, but that seems really shady. Why would a series created in France and with a French name, be aired in Spain and not in France? Because “Il Ă©tait une fois
la Musique” doesn’t exist in France. Or rather, there is one existing, but it is not a TV show by Albert BarillĂ©, but rather a series of book-CDs for really small children, completely unrelated to the other Il Ă©tait une fois
Now, I’m not saying this show doesn’t exist. I just want to say that all the shows were made by French studios under the direction of Albert BarillĂ©, using designs of French illustrators. As a result, it seems weird to have a series only in Spain
 But anyway, let’s move on.]
Tumblr media
However, there was one more. It’s “Il Ă©tait une fois
Notre Terre” (Once upon a time
Our Earth ; but translated in English as Once upon a time
Planet Earth), a show about ecology and sustainable development. As a result, the show here takes a more political and ideological turn, with strong messages on how to fight pollution and save our planet. It was the last show of Albert BarillĂ©, who died in 2009 (the show aired in 2008), and while it was still produced by the French Procidis, the animation was rather done by the Chinese studio Colorland Animation. This ended in the animation being heavily updated, all of the original models being changed to more “realistic” and “modern ones”. And I can tell you, these changes were not welcomed upon the release of the series. They were considered “not needed” and “clumsy”.
Now we still have 26 episodes, where we follow “les hĂ©ritiers de la planĂšte” (the The heirs of the planet), a group of militant high schoolers creating a newspaper to talk about the state of the planet and how to fight current problems. They are guided in their quests, searches and redaction of articles by Maestro, who explains to them the causes of the current troubles, possible solutions, and give them a way to travel through different countries and continents to see the effect of pollution and climate change through their own eyes. The team is made up of the usual good guys: Pierrot, Psi, Pierrette, Petit Gros (here renamed “Jambo” a play on “Jambon”, Ham in French, and Jumbo), but one interesting addition is that the typical bad guys, Le Teigneux and Le Nabot (renamed here Grumeau, Lump), are here good guys, part of the team and engaged for saving the planet. They stay a bit nasty, they easily mock other people, and stay also prompt to anger and brutal, but here they have a strong conscience and a desire to do good.
In 26 episodes the show talk about the issues of the lack of energy, of limited water supplies, of pollution, deforestation, excessive agriculture, fishing and urbanization
There are also some episodes that are different from the usual “environmental” topic and explores other troubles of our modern world, like the condition of women or the effects of new technologies.

This has been a rather quiet year. There’s been a couple of revisits with the release of the BioShock Collection, as well as Virtual Reality support for Fallout 4 and L.A. Noire. Not to mention that Cuphead delves into the genre as well.
As always, we’ll take this time to remember Patti Page, singer of “Doggie in the Window” who also passed away on New Year’s Day.
Whether it’s Happy Tenth Anniversary of BioShock or Happy Eclipse, I’ll still be here to kick off a tune.
See if your favorite record (or wax cylinder) was featured this year:
