Found another old picture - me as one of the haunted portraits in a production of Ruddigore. It's normally an all-male ensemble, but they were short a first tenor and were happy to let a second alto step in; it's mostly the same range in this show. (I was also the ladies' costumer. This one was lurking in the back of my closet and just happened to fit the aesthetic.) I had one line: "There's something in that!" But I got a big laugh from carrying my evil villain mustache around on a little gold stick like opera glasses.

Iolanthe is a fairy who committed the capital offense of marrying a mortal (it was commuted to penal servitude because the Fairy Queen couldn't bear to execute her). The opera mostly follows her son, Stephon, who is therefore half a fairy (from the waist up) and his efforts to win the hand of his beloved, Phyllis, who is the ward of the Lord Chancellor and being sought after by *ahem* the entire house of peers. (They are in love but the Chancellor thinks she can do better and won't consent to the match. He is of course also in love with her - after all his wife died like 25 years ago - but as she's his ward he considers it a conflict of interest)
Anyway. Lots of parliamentary humor and lots of legal humor - "the Law is the true embodiment / of everything that's Excellent"
I have. I have a LOT of feelings about Iolanthe. And the comic lovestory in the foreground with the tragic lovestory in the background... I have a lot of feelings about Iolanthe
And yeah you'd love it there's fairies
Oh goodness, that does sound like a Time. Definitely looking into this!

REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST: She could do Everything: Opera, operetta, burlesque, music hall and comedy! One critic called her "the Patti of light entertainment". The British stage artist Florence St. John was one of the most influential theatre figures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. She shone as Offenbach's Périchole, Grande-Duchesse and Madame Favart, celebrated triumphs at the Savoy Theatre in the works of Gilbert & Sullivan and was the eternal Nell Gwyn in a popular play by Robert Planquette about the life and love of the legendary mistress of Charles II. In the 1890s, the artist made several guest appearances in the United States. Florence St. John was married four times; she was 14 years old when she married for the first time. She experienced violence and passion; her biography provides material for several novels. The artist, born Florence Margaret Grieg, died at the age of 56 and was buried in Golders Green Cemetery in London.
As Florodora in the operetta of the same name by Leslie Stuart at the Lyric Theatre London, 1901.

Seldom What They Seem
by Patricia Penrose (Author) As posted by the author on Kindle Vella. According to Gilbert and Sullivan, “Things are seldom what they seem.” Nora Keen, a lowly dresser at the Savoy Theatre in San Francisco, is content to live in the shadows. But now, her friendship with Comic Opera star Olivia Stanhope will thrust Nora into the limelight and into danger as well. Here are some intriguing…

Sorry About the Racket
Dearest Reader, Since my last communication, I have stopped at the small village of Yew Taube, wherein my search for local legends uncovered fragments of what could be a lost Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera. I transcribe below the parts that survive and shall haste to advise should on of the various leads for a complete copy prove true. While the libretto has the macabre jollity of Gilbert’s…

just a little fic in comic form i guess, about an alternate way they could have ruined Bill’s day in Sock Opera.
i imagine Bill is CRAZY touch-starved. a trillion years without a physical form has gotta mess a guy up. he’s always shoving people around and shaking hands and leaning on shoulders and stuff, but he doesn’t actually feel anything when he does it. possessing living bodies gives him a semblance of physical sensation, but it’s still just a shadow of the real thing.
also, i think Mabel gives, just, the best hugs in the universe.

At May 1. 1786 the first Performance of „Le nozze di Figaro“ from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was in Vienna. Mozart himself conducted the first two performances from the Cembalo. Until today one of the most popular in the repertoire worldwide. Here we see a very old Postcard with a Scene from this very popular Opera, and the announcement for the first performance and the Burgtheater at this time.
