Dreamworks has the best couples/relationships ever. The thing I've always admired about their couples is how mature and well-developed their relationship is. How one respects everything about their partner, gives each other time to build trust, and also helps each other become the best versions of themselves. They rarely (or even never) say "I love you" to each other because their actions are powerful enough to evoke that.
Also: the characters individually are some of the most well-developed characters in animation (yeah, I said it).
So yeah, these are just my thoughts. I just adore DW's characters and ships.

MONSTERS IN MEDIA
I watched this video essay talking about the sympathy for monsters. I didn’t realize that when people were kids they never felt bad for the dragon that would be ‘slayed’ in those children books yk. I feel like especially with this generation people are being taught more empathy like with stories like shrek (ya I did use it as an example like don’t even) where the ‘monster’ is a character who deserves empathy, like shrek. Like he literally just vibes in his swamp and people hate on him, I see in a lot of monster stories it’s there’s always an element of the monsters being invaded, even when you supposed to root for the invader(humans) which is find really fascinating. Like in the back of our minds when creating stories like this there’s always an element of humans invading or the monster being a “living obstacle” (Curious Archive (n.d.) Sympathy for the Monster). Curious archive also brought up a point that I never noticed, that when the monsters are shown to be on the ‘good’ side or sympathetic too they go up against an alien, a different type of monster. He mentioned colonialism in the YouTube video as well and it made me wonder like why these monsters need to go up against something otherworldly to show that they are worthy of sympathy from the other side, Im referring mostly to Kaiju(mainly Godzilla) at this moment. Even in these stories they emphasize that humans are somehow separate from the “natural” order and the monster is there to protect it or the other way around, there is never the message of both should exist together without the existence of another monster threat to both sides. It is that colonial mindset that we are separated from nature that I think these tropes stem from, which makes sense especially with Kaiju when looking at the origins of it. Why does there need to be a side of humans vs monsters/nature instead of humans learning to be with monsters/nature again? That’s also why shrek is good because he helps the other animals in the forest and helps Fiona be herself which I really love :). Another take on sympathy for the monster is how we looks at marginalized people, like in Guillermo del toros movie the shape of water. I love the portrayal of how the monster is as an actual being and not just a crazy fish guy, and ya the main girl does get with him but it’s the way he understands what it is like for her in a world that at the time (and still today honestly) didn’t accept or care about disabled people, you can see in the other two supporting characters they are also marginalized as well and it makes sense why they were the ones to help fish guy n the main girl escape, because they too understood what it was like to be perceived as an other in their society. This trope doesn’t even have to apply to monsters specifically and just the “bad” side in general in stories as you can see time and time again a lot of villains are made to be disabled or marginalized which again is why I love the shape of water, shrek and also megamind too because they subvert these tropes, humanizing these dehumanized characters and actually respecting them in their story as people and not just as a “living obstacle”.
I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND WATCHING CURIOUS ARCHIVES VIDEO SYMPATHY FOR THE MONSTERS because he voiced everything I thought and more in that video :).

Media I’ve Experienced in 2024 (March)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica:Rebellion (8/10)-Big Cake Round Cake Right in Front of Me!
The Little Mermaid 2023 (6/10)-The singing was good besides that wack Awkwafina rap
Craig Before The Creek (8/10)-While I liked Craig of the Creek, I wouldn’t call myself a fan but this prequel was pretty fun into was the main characters were like before
Madame Web (0/10)-No reason to watch, awful effects, bland characters, boring story
Megaman X5 (7/10)-Honestly, the story was kind of stale but the gameplay was still top notch
Peacemaker (9/10)-After playing him in Mortal 1 Kombat, I loved this show. Fun characters, funny dialogue, and some pretty good fights
Megaman X6 (5/10)-Guilty pleasure, while a lot of it was annoyingly hard, I liked the virus stuff and the story
Avenue Q (9/10)-Pretty emotional musical about adulthood despite being played by muppets
Kung Fu Panda 4 (6/10)-Waaay too safe, the villain was intimidating until being defeated in 3 hits
Secrets of the Furious Five (8/10)-Pretty neat special, I liked the Furious Five from their movie screentime and the show and this helped fleshed them out
The Button of Doom (6/10)-While not as good as the movie. This is something Megamind 2 wishes it could be
South Park (8/10)-After 26 Seasons, this show is still pretty good. It has moments that make me laugh while still being shocking and there are characters I find likable to watch like Butters and Kenny
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (10/10)-Takes my favorite disk of FFVII and expands hard on it. Traversal feels freeing, the locations feel more full, and the story takes some wild turns.
Smiling Friends Season 1 (8/10)-This shows that adult cartoons don’t have to be about nihilism and can be about hope and enjoying life.
Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy (3/10)-While I find Seth MacFarlane funny this didn’t do it for me. The comedy while having decent setups, is ultimately too lazy to make it funny
Megaman X7 (4/10)-Gameplay was repetitive, the voice acting was bad but hey still liked it more than X3
Megaman X8 (8/10)-The gameplay is pretty fun this time, and Lumine is a pretty good villain if they expanded her more
Megaman X:The Day of Sigma (5/10)-The animation is good don’t get me wrong but the pacing couldn’t keep me engaged
Saw (7/10)-Pretty good story about someone who wants to help people realize they want to live by putting them in death traps
Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Manga (Currently 8/10)-My favorite anime is Fairy Tail and this sequel expands pretty well, the Dragon Gods concept is interesting, the characters are still as they were which is how I like them, and the art during fights are really well detailed
Hello Kitty Super Style (9/10)-I love Supercute Adventures and this show honestly feels like if we got a full 11 minute show.
Mortal Kombat 1995 (8/10)-Fun action and characters. Effects didn’t age the best
Grave of The Fireflies (9/10)-Really emotional movie about those suffering during war
Persona 3 Reload (10/10)-The best gameplay and presentation Persona has ever been.
Godzilla:King of Monsters (9/10)-Really cool action and monsters
King Kong:Skull Island (8/10)-Pretty good story and action
Godzilla 2014 (5/10)-Probably spoiled by how good future Monsterverse but the spectacle was kind of forgettable
Godzilla vs Kong (10/10)-Yup still as fun as I remember it
Hunter X Hunter 2011 (9/10)-As much as I want to strangle Gon the rest of the series is pretty fire
Kaguya Sama Love is War!:The First Kiss That Never Ends (9/10)-Pretty funny and emotional movie
Komi Can’t Communicate (9/10)-Fluttershy as an anime girl
My Senpai Is Annoying (8/10)-I came in wanting Kurobe, left loving Futaba and Takeda
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon:Explorers of Sky-Beyond Time and Darkness (5/10)-The dub is too goofy
OFF The RPG (Opinion Has Changed as of September) (8/10)-Originally I found the fights boring and the fact I was softlocked made it lower. That was a mistake. The story is really haunting and dark, the fights are really basic but not bad, and the locations have an eerie feeling to them
One Piece Film Z (10/10)-Z is a really intimidating villain and the action is pretty good
My Little Pony:The Manga (7/10)-Cute artwork, I wish the stories were better

Please consider reblogging for a larger sample size.
*Edit for some clarification: the others are gone COMPLETELY. There is absolutely no saving the others. The cultural impact and even the concepts of them are wiped out of existence. There is no potential of getting the others back ever again. Also, I know it says "three" and not "five" this was supposed to be two different polls until I changed them.

me: and while megamind and the spiderverse franchise are both excellent genre-aware superhero movies, megamind provides a subversion, almost a parody, on superhero tropes, while spiderverse is primarily a love-letter meta commentary on the genre. now things get really interesting when you consider both movies' position to the big MCU boom of the 2010s-- cashier: sir you are holding up the line

Hot take, but I think people are overreacting to the "second" Megamind movie being bad. Yes, I understand people have been begging for a proper Megamind sequel for over a decade, and thus when anticipations aren't met, they're disappointed. I get that. People wanted a sincere and efforted return to the franchise. However, this isn't some shocker bad movie. There is no shock to this. It's par for the course. This is the direct-to-video VHS equivalent of the modern age. It's the same reason I was never surprised a Mulan 2 or Beauty and the Beast sequel was bad. They're cheap footnotes that were meant to be cheap footnotes. This was always designed to be like a backdoor pilot to a crappy stream-only TV show. "Oh my goshhhh what the heckkkk why is it so baaaad?" We already know why it's bad. Call me when we get a theatrical release to a long-awaited property.

Is it worth watching Megamind rules? I know I’m not the target, but I’m curious yet also really really nervous. I know it’s for a younger audience but I’m still very on the fence and nervous. Also, love your writing
Omg, thank you, and thank you also for asking and yes yes yes 100% it's worth watching! It got crapped on by a bunch of people who decided based on the trailer alone that it was going to suck (how fun, a movie about a guy who everyone decided would be bad despite not knowing him got a spinoff show that...everyone decided would be bad despite not watching it, lol), so there's a lot of hate out there for it. I'm assuming you've caught wind of some of that, and that's why you're nervous? But for what it's worth, I was staring at the screen like :D basically the whole time.
Some more specific notes below the cut, but the tl;dr is please do give it a chance, if you can find the time. A G-rated direct-to-stream spinoff show wasn't what a lot of people were hoping for, and there were some folks who watched it and didn't care for it. But from a writing and storytelling standpoint, I think it is genuinely good! If you go in expecting a cute kids' show with some silly jokes and social misfits finding their way forward together, and keep an open mind, I don't think you'll be disappointed-- in fact I think you may be pleasantly surprised.
Just a gentle heads-up on some stuff because I'm not sure what you've heard about the show yet, and I'm also not sure what your existing expectations are!
The show was given a shoestring budget and not a lot of time to go from writers' room to final product, and yes, there are places where you can tell. But that was always going to be the case-- Dreamworks was absolutely not going to be spending big bucks on a franchise they've barely even acknowledged in more than a decade-- and it wasn't the fault of the people making the show. And even with the low budget, I think the animation is still genuinely solid, especially in later episodes! The people who worked on it really did a great job with what they were given.
And the writing!!! Holy shit!!! My skin is clear my crops are watered etc. The original writers handled this project and they absolutely delivered. Megamind & Roxanne's whole Thing progresses and grows and blooms in a really sweet and realistic way. Roxanne & Chum have a great dynamic. (Minion's name needed to be changed for legal reasons, but the writers worked that into the show and I gotta say, as a trans person, it was really lovely to see everyone else respond to "actually, because of [spoiler], my name is Chum now" with "oh! cool okay" and just keep rolling. I love that that was modeled for kids.) The character development is tangible; we get to watch Megamind really grow as a person and come into his own over the course of the series. And the new characters are really fun-- I genuinely enjoyed Keiko and everyone else.
Even if you never watch it (it's OK if you don't!) please just know: this was not a cash grab; Megamind Rules was made by people who truly cared about this world and these characters.
It's also worth noting that Megamind Versus the Doom Syndicate (the extended pilot) recaps a bunch of the same lessons as the original movie, so it can feel a little bit "...didn't we JUST do this??" but I'm pretty sure that was because Dreamworks didn't want to rely on kids to watch a 13 year old movie rated PG instead of G in order to get context. So like, I get it. And it's still cute! But it did mean I was nervous about what the rest of the series would be like until I was laughing my ass off halfway through Episode 2. If you're nervous, you can probably skip MMVtDS.
But yeah. I truly do think Megamind Rules is worth watching, and I've been so sad about the reception it received. Thank you so much for asking about it, and not just deciding it sucks and moving on. I appreciate you.
