Meenah's Feferi AU

Old rant about it, cleaned up:

Meenah is who becomes The Condesce and it's implied that Feferi is who becomes Meenah's more peaceful-reigning version of her ancestor, right? So in that case, why isn't Feferi more like the ruler from Meenah's timeline? It could've made her a more interesting character.

Having someone with absolute power that wants to do good by low-bloods and end bloodshed is a good concept, but otherwise, there's not much else to Fef's character and truthfully, it feels a little unbelievable to have a character like her in a world that is shown to have had such strong biases toward the blood caste. Having her be a morally exceptional outlier to the high-bloods seemed a little mysterious to me. What made her think outside her societal box? We don't get to know, but I wish we could've seen it. As it stands though, I had an idea.

If we followed a characterization more fitting of the fuchsia-blood in Meenah's timeline, we see that her society is less violent but still enforces a condescending, pitying outlook towards lower-bloods. It could've been cool to have a Feferi so out of touch with low-bloods that she shows some ignorance like Eridan, except hers would have stemmed from trying to impart goodwill on them (and it would backfire). It could have been a neat character arc to see her face her own biases and have her realize with her relationship with Sollux (and later friendship with Nepeta) how her views were in need of being adjusted just like Eridan's. It could've made a nice foil to him!

To have the two sea dwellers argue over their morality but both parties are wrong in different ways. Eridan wanting to destroy all lower bloods, Feferi admonishing him and saying they need to be protected because they're precious little things! Feferi doting on Sollux like a pet, not an equal, and getting her first dose of reality check from him. Sollux having a harder time with Aradia ignoring him and now also dealing with a fuchsia-blood endeared to him. Feferi always interjecting in conflicts to try to be the 'perfect peacekeeper' but making things worse with her mindset that 'higher bloods should be the bigger person and forgive the lower bloods because they are weaker. We shouldn't bully them.' It doesn't work and makes her insufferable! Im actually getting endeared to this made up Feferi, I might doodle her... (RIP I did lol)

But in conclusion, honestly, I haven't been around since the early years of fandom so I'm not sure if Im treading on an idea that was already discussed, but the thought of this different Feferi we could've had spurred me to make a post anyways. I really like the version of Fef that could've been ^^"

Since the general pattern for Humanstuck aus is to make the beta trolls the younger siblings, the dancestors the older siblings, and the alternian ancestors the parents, I think we should start making the beforus ancestors the grandparents.

Beforus Feferi : I think that all poor people should be adopted by rich people like dogs :) that will solve poverty :)

Then they can start having ancient family beef with one another. Karkat’s grandpa hates Feferi’s grandma, Karkat’s dad hates Feferi’s mom, and Meenah hates Kankri, so every time Karkat and Feferi hang out or invite each other to the others birthday party it’s always suuuper awkward. Meanwhile most of the Captors and the Amporas hate each other but their respective grandpas are best friends and hang out all the time so they’re always forced into awkward friend reunions and family dinners with them.

Idk I feel like we could have more fun with the beforus ancestors if we wanted to.

One problem concerning your turnabout au:

Beforan as a more peaceful less cruel predecessor to Alternia stems from Beforan Feferi ruling the place with her ideology. What is different in this AU that made this Alternia still require Kankri to hide his blood color, despite logically it's still an adult Feferi ruling the place?

(I don't actually know if I missed a post on that topic so please humor me)

i think ive thrown some ideas bout how the beforan and alternian cultures would develop in turnabout somewhere (think it was the calliope and caliborn post) but ive been thinking bout it more since then so ill try to explain it a lil better!

basics are still the same - beforus is more peaceful and alternia is violent - but feferi and meenah swap places as rulers. when it comes to meenah and her time on beforus i latched onto how in canon she really didnt want to be a ruler, she didnt like the whole responsibility of taking care of a whole ass planet. its what would have happened in the au as well, she sees the whole dumpster fire, goes "fuck this actually" and just dips on the whole queen shtick. she didnt want to do it really, at least not alone. i imagine she changed the entire core of how trolls society rolls (kinda like how feferi introduced the whole culling system), but babying every lower cast is not exactly meenahs style, so i thought about her introducing some kind of council to help her make decisions and run from her responsibilities - imagine like one representative of each blood cast to make everything fair and square. basically she bends ruling system into some kind of presidency lmfao, and since everyone has a say in how things are managed it leads to more fair society (or something i need to think bout it more but thats the gist of it)

and then we get to the topic of alternian feferi. she at first tries to mold the trollian society into her utopian dream, but due to calliopes machinations it fails, and it fails hard. no matter what she tries she just cant change how things work, and overtime she becomes more and more bitter and defeated, slowly morphing into the mindset of "well if i cant make the best of it, i WILL make the worst of it" and just totally snaps, becoming the ruthless dictator of the alternia. from this point on it pretty closely follows how things develop in canon, with adult trolls moving into space and her eventual arrival on earth (and her deal with callie)

One of the youngest Alpha trolls

Believes in and adores magic with a grublike sense of wonder, but totally lies about it to his friends. He’s bad at that, though, so he just tries not to talk about magic at all.

He really needs braces, but he refuses to wear them. On Beforus, they’re available for the culled (which he isn’t), but on Alternia, they’re only reserved for highbloods (purple and above).

It’s ambiguous if he knew the specific death circumstances that would save himself and the other Alpha trolls from the Scratch, but he sure had fun killing some of his companions. Aranea realized the Scratch loophole in the middle of what he was doing and killed everyone else (admittedly, Eridan only killed, like, three of them).

He’s working for [LE] out of bitterness and a desire to end it all (hence apocalypseApathy), but it has helped him relearn that believing in magic isn’t something of which he should be ashamed.

He uses the ouija fetch modus because it saves him the trouble of thinking about what to retrieve. This is partially because of apathy and partially because it gives him a splitting headache.

He’s a Thief of Time because he ends up giving [LE] access to his time powers (i.e. stealing his teammates’ access to them) for his own selfish reasons.

His left-hand lens fell out once, hence the pseudo-eyepatch.

Meenah's Feferi AU P2: Dead Fef

Continuing how I would've liked Feferi's arc to go, this second part is more just admitedly guilty wish fullfilment 😔

Feferi is just as patronizing to Jade in the dream bubbles. Jade doesn't consider it malicious, but she gets annoyed and joins Sollux in being one of Fef's earliest correctors of her behavior. They're mentors to one another, figuring stuff out.

Then she dies (though Im conflicted if it's in the same way or if there's a change in that scene, too).

I wondered why, if Feferi could still talk to/gave a connection with Jade through her dreams, she wasn't used more during her years in the ship? Just for fun, I imagine Feferi readily rants to Jade about her adventures in the dream bubbles, and Jade likewise reports on what was said to John and Davesprite as if it were a telenovela.

Fef finally gets to be friends with Nepeta (pljs Tavros, whom they stick up for!), and gets some quality time with the Alpha Trolls during a Nepeta tea party. She also becomes bffs with Kankri. She's fascinated by his takes and is one of the few trolls that can actually hold a conversation with him. She learns a lot about herself through his commentary on his timeline's ruler, and takes his advice to heart.

Feferi gets a taste of her own medicine with Meenah, the only troll to ever be able to give her the same treatment, and the bloodlust is high.

Feferi joined Vriska's crew, wanting to help aave Jade and the rest of her friends, but she does NOT like her methods! She's talked to and bonded with so many of these alternate trolls! She's learned! She leaves Vriska.

And she becomes her opponent. She's learned to become more thoughtful, and embodies her title of the Witch of Life even without her god-tier as she saves the undead and builds an army with her closest friends, Nepeta and Tavros (sorry dead-Tavros's 'arc.' I never felt like it was earned. We never got to see his buildup, and it came out of nowhere! This feels better to me.)

I feel like I don’t see enough exploration into thow the ancestors being their parents affects the trolls in Humanstuck au’s. Because when you think about it it’s really fucking interesting.

Vriska in canon idolizes Mindfiang and tries to imitate her in her everyday life. She even goes as far as forcing herself to show interest in and become quadrantmates with the descendants of Mindfang’s quadrantmates (Eridan and Tavros). For humanstuck this creates a kid who places her mother on a pedestal and forms her entire personality around her. Maybe Mindfang is some notable person in the town they live in, like she holds an important job or she was infamous at the schools Vriska goes to. She could be so popular to the point where Vriska and Aranea are seen as “Mindfang’s kids” first and themselves second. Vriska thinks her mother is extremely cool and can do no wrong. Bonus points if Mindfang is dead or missing and Vriska lives with Aranea or Spidermom (who in this case might be Mindfangs terrible mother or sister or something). Vriska might be trying to honor her mother by imitating her in everyday life, based on what little information she has on her from her journals and the stories people tell her. Aranea, being older and having probably interacted with Mindfang more before her death, might know her true personality (whether she was good or bad) and is hiding what she knows from Vriska so as to not crush this perfect version of their mother that she has. This would make it ten times harder for Vriska to step out of Mindfang’s shadow and form her own personality, as she would feel like she was betraying her mother or letting go of her memory.

Meenah and Feferi!!!! Now they live with the terrible piece of shit that is HIC. In canon Meenah idolizes HIC as a cooler alternate version of herself, while Feferi is disgusted and horrified by her actions. This translates pretty easily over to a messed up parent/child dynamic. Meenah sees her mother as extremely cool, and thinks that if she imitates her or proves to her mother how cool SHE is that HIC will love her. She wants to be moms favorite and for them to be on a team against her annoying sister. Meanwhile Feferi is disillusioned from whatever caused Meenah to have this view on their mom, and instead sees her for the terrible person she is. Feferi is constantly trying to separate herself from her mother and prove that she is nothing like her. This is EXTREMELYinteresting if you include SolFef or Sollux and Feferi being close friends. The Psiioniic is one of the people HIC treated the worst out of the ancestors, meaning that in a humanstuck setting she is likely his abusive ex or a former/current bully. Psii could even work for her and be treated terribly at his job. This would cause an immediate distrust in Feferi, and Fef would have to work extremely hard to prove to Sollux’s dad that she is nothing like her mother and is a good person. This could also lead to a Meenah and Feferi conflict, where they are constantly fighting about their mother until Meenah has a moment where she realizes that no matter how much she tries to prove herself worthy, HIC is never going to love her, at least not in the way she wants her to.

The new family relations alone are interesting. Are Signless and the Disciple married, making Kankri, Meulin, Karkat, and Nepeta siblings? Is Dolorosa still Signless’s mom (which if you go this route I would usually make Kanaya and Porrim her grandchildren and have them as the Vantas’s cousins, but age gaps between siblings that are that big DO exist so Kanaya and Porrim could be Singless’ sisters and Karkat and Kankri’s aunts)? The Vantas’, Leijon’s, and Captor’s have likely been close since before Karkat, Nepeta, and Sollux were born, so do the three of them wonder if they’re actually friends or if they only hang out due to this proximity? Are either Dualscar or the Summoner Aranea and Vriska’s dad, or do the Ampora’s and Nitram’s just have a complicated history with the Serket’s due to these former relationships? How would this affect Vriska, Eridan, and Tavros’ friendship? How does Terezi’s mom working for Gamzee’s dad affect the relationship between the Pyrope’s and the Makara’s? There’s just so much shit to look at and I find it very interesting.
