“Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive.” – Walt Disney
The Evolution of Film Animation
- By Animation Enthusiast (Anitth Andrea Tulod)
The art of making inanimate objects appear to move is an artistic impulse that predates the movies. Pygmalion, a sculptor, created a figure of a woman so perfect that he begged Venus to bring her to life. This sense of magic, mystery, and transgression still permeates contemporary film animation, which has made it a primary vehicle for exploring the emotions of childhood.
Tumblr media
Due to early experimenters' discovery of the principle of persistence of vision, the theory of the animated cartoon was developed fifty years before the invention of the cinema.
Let's take a look at where it all started!
THEN: THE EARLY ANIMATION ERA
ZOETROPE
The earliest form of animation than was the Zoetrope, which was invented in 1834 by William George Horner. The device consists of a drum-shaped container with vertical slits cut into the sides. When the device is spun, the images inside appear to move. This was the start of what would soon become a powerful tool in the world of entertainment.
Tumblr media
The evolution of animation has been influenced by technological advancements, cultural shifts, and artistic innovations. It has gone from simple black-and-white drawings to visually stunning animated movies that take your breath away.
In the early 1900s, the first animated films started appearing. Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo" was the first animated film to use frames, and it opened the door for other animators to explore the possibilities of animation as a medium.
youtube
Early animations were simple and relied heavily on black-and-white drawings. However, as time passed, technology improved, and filmmakers began experimenting with color and sound to make their animations more immersive.
The 1930s saw the rise of Walt Disney Studios and the introduction of full-length animated feature films. The first full-length animated film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," was released in 1937 and was a massive success. Disney's films introduced new techniques, like cell animation, which allowed animators to create more fluid movements for their characters.
Tumblr media
As animation began to mature as an art form, new styles, and techniques emerged. In the 1960s and 1970s, the counterculture movement in America influenced animators to experiment with bizarre, psychedelic imagery. Examples of these styles include the works of Ralph Bakshi, who created films like "Fritz the Cat" and "Heavy Traffic."

NOW: GOLDEN AGE ANIMATION TO HYPER-REALISTIC ANIMATION
The evolution from Golden Age animation to hyper-realistic animation has not been a simple linear process but has gone through several stages. One of the first steps towards hyper-realistic animation was the introduction of rotoscoping in the 1970s. Rotoscoping involves tracing over live-action footage to create animations that are more fluid and natural. This process was used in films like Disney's "101 Dalmatians" and "Robin Hood" to make the movements of animals and humans look more lifelike
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 1980s and 1990s saw the emergence of computer-generated animation, which allowed animators to create complex, three-dimensional images. Pixar, founded in 1979, was one of the first companies to use computer-generated graphics in their animations, resulting in films like "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, animation has reached new heights of artistic and technical achievement. Animators can create lifelike characters with detailed facial expressions, intricate background designs, and stunning visual effects that immerse audiences in entirely new worlds. Animation is no longer considered just a medium for children's entertainment but is now appreciated as a legitimate form of art.

got a worm nibbling my brain. can someone help me find a piece of obscure media?
webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.
it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

Happy tdov to fat trans people. 🏳️‍⚧️ Biggest thing that helped me as a trans kid was seeing older fat trans people. There were a lot of really irritating "advice" posts going around early in my time on the internet with a lot of misinformation in them, but one that I constantly saw (in addition to people claiming you should wear your pants rediculously low or only wear button ups) were posts saying you had to lose weight to transition. Can confidently confirm that is completely untrue. 👍

Sometimes I get messages about certain dialogue in my comics about how a character is being passive aggressive when I'm just writing them as straight forward and blunt.
idk, as an autistic person who's dealt with genuine harassment several times (including a few months ago) because his straight forward and blunt demeanor was misinterpreted as being "rude", "ungrateful" and "bitchy", its just kind of interesting seeing people interpret dialogue in a more hostile way.
it's not a complaint, i prefer those fictional interpretations over terminally online twitter users who need to be coddled over everything but it is kind of fascinating seeing how people interpret certain dialogue.

MOVIES
- By Movie buff (Vienne Mhariel Sister) The astonishing capacity of the human mind to deal with imagination is a gift to us all. A massive range of contexts can become a reality when screenwriters and screenplays are translated into what we now enjoy as motion pictures.
Tumblr media
Let's acknowledge the essential parts of a movie
Ready... Action!
Tumblr media
There are several elements that are essential in a movie, but today we will focus on two:
> Cinematography > Editing
Motion pictures or commonly known as movies are undeniably one of the people’s favorite pastimes as it provides both entertainment and a way for us to unwind. Aside from movies being a means to release different sets of emotions, movies bring out our artistic front especially when we try to analyze how movies gradually change and progress over time.
We will ride the time machine and take you back to the early development of movies, and compare it to what we see now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Portraying a film is not just about recording an act. It is mostly about the way the images are recorded and captured. Cinematography is composed of visual elements displayed on-screen such as lighting, exposure, camera angles, focus, color, and framing. Old movies are classified as classics for a reason. As technology has been evolving over time, so does cinematography. Cinematography has come a long way from monochrome to color to digital film.
Cinematography back then are filmed in monochrome
> Santa Claus (1898) > The Kiss in the tunnel (1899) > Sallie Gardner at a Gallop (1878)

Figure 2.The Kiss in the Tunnel (1899)
Tumblr media
Figure 3. Sallie Gardner at a Gallop (1878).
If you base the early movies on today’s standards, these movies are considered primitive.  Movies today such as the Fast and Furious series have totally more developed cinematography. The addition of colors in movies as early as the 1900s has brought a fresh and brand-new look to the film and television world. The changing camera angles while capturing multiple subjects while maintaining the stability and hold of the equipment shows how movies have become more advanced in terms of their cinematography. When the movie conveys a different emotion, the lighting also changes. This is to attract one’s interest by relating the visual elements to the perception and interpretation of the viewers.
EDITING
Tumblr media
This element integrates all the necessary scenes, tones, and effects effortlessly. Editing gives the film’s progression the essential rhythm to keep it interesting. This is more than just selecting and filtering the best footage and arranging it in the right order. This also gives the movie a sense of continuity.
In the early films, the duration usually just lasts up to a minute or two. This is because no editing processes were invented during that time. In terms of pacing, the speed of the scenes remains the same throughout the film.
Tumblr media
Much like the first film, Sallie Gardner at a Gallop (1878), a nature photographer was hired to capture a running horse to prove that the four hooves are lifted once the horse gallops. All images were put together and created and played throughout which introduced the motion picture.
Before, in order to introduce another character, the camera has to stop filming and allow the new character to join the scene before continuing. Scenes in a film are then connected. An example of this is the film Cinderella (1898).
youtube
In today’s editing standards, scenes are easily cut out and/or added because of the editing techniques introduced. The editing techniques today have become so developed that animals that are not there during the actual filming magically appear in the final cut of the movie with the use of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). An example of this is the tiger from the Life of Pi (2012). It was for sure too risky to film an actual tiger along with the actor. Thanks to helpful editing technology, the tiger scenes were made possible.
Tumblr media

There have already been several advancements in film and movie technology. Compared to the movies before, the movies now are a lot more entertaining and effective in conveying a story. They are more pleasant to the viewers. Although most of us would prefer to watch movies nowadays, we can never fully appreciate the progress and development in motion pictures if it wasn’t for the early films that made innovators invent some of the most helpful tools and strategies in the film industry. This is why we appreciate, remember, progress, and contribute to the artistic and technological and approach of the movie-making process.

Just thought about … oh my god. Bakugo’s first real battle with a formidable villain after your kid is born; he’s not exactly “out of shape” (he never quit the gym, routine, etc… just changed it), but he’s thrown down hard in the first couple seconds, and he’s slower to get back into position—taking the time to steady his feet and assess the terrain, pushing out the lil tummy he gained feeding you postpartum delicacies as he cracks his back—
And the villain, god help them, decides to call out to him as they use the few seconds of vulnerability to attack again, screaming, “hey pop pop, don’t tell me parenthood has made you soft! How ‘bout I start calling you ‘daddy,’ too?”
Just as Bakugo’s turning back around with a new fire in his eyes, blood all warmed up, and shooting off to grab them by the throat to end the fight in one single move.

most critics of heroine x villain ships are unknowingly performative, recycling patriarchal ideas of female goodness without ever questioning the cage. it is a masterclass in devastating subservience disguised as feminist critique. you can mute all the faux-progressive language about romanticising toxic relationships, and their arguments would still reek of gut-churning fear and conformity. i feel bad for them. truly. but punishing other women for stepping outside the rigid lines of acceptable womanhood is dystopian. fandoms are not surveillance states. no woman needs permission to enjoy the transgressive. no woman needs to beg forgiveness for enjoying her favourite stories.
