So, now that i'm technically learning 3d modeling and animation, one of my main goals in life now has become "Model Genos' arms so i have a reference forever in ANY angle"
i don't really know how to word this but like i feel like i'm gonna forever have to deal with the pain and heartache of one of my very first pokémon games- the first 'normal' pokémon game i've ever played, that i will have lasting nostalgia and love for as a result of it being formative to my introduction into the series- being the one that will forever be looked down upon for bad graphics and technical issues as a result of the game having been rushed
like i honest to goodness want to scream and yell and cry into the void about how this means everything to me and will always be one of my fave games just in general. but how am i gonna do that without someone being like 'the broken overpriced mess? the one that's missing all this stuff from the older games that was great? the thing with all the cringe? that one?' or whatever. and the thing is they aren't wrong for their criticisms either like i know the fact that they rushed this wonderful game hardcore is a massive stain on its reputation and it hurts me too but like i cannot turn off the brain full of love in me and be a mean critic. or even an impartial one. i mean i criticize everything i love don't get me wrong i am constantly running my mouth about what i like and don't like. but at the end of the day i approach all media with an unusually optimistic mindset. if you see me talk a ton about something no matter what i'm saying you can bet it means i love it.
just. aaagh. it's always tough being a new fan of an old series. i'm like too embarrassed to express my opinions bc i feel like they're invalid y'know? i feel so exhausted every time i see something to the effect of like 'oh those poor kids these days having to deal with such bad quality everything what a bad time to be a fan of pokémon wow y'all make me feel so old' well see the thing is i actually am thriving and i love it here. and i'm also an adult myself so i have more critical thinking skills than people who played red when they were like five years old did. and even with the power of critical thinking i manage to be in love with this. join me in marvelling at the beauty of life
Would you mind explaining your design process on Zarian and the models like him in general? Did you have any particular inspirations for it?
sure!
basically, when i designed robot zarian / the DRACOs in general (which were also the first things i designed for redux), i had never designed an original robot, like, ever. this is the first drawing i ever did, just kind of feeling out what 'robot dragon' conjured in my head:
which was cool, but it wasn't quite what i wanted. the silhouette wasn't robot-y enough. so i started trawling for inspiration.
i took (and still take) a LOT of inspiration from the robot designs of horizon zero dawn, which is one of my favorite fictional worlds of all time. i liked the simultaneous sleekness and clunkiness of them. they felt advanced, but not flawless. i also let real technology inform some of my decisions. since the DRACOs were meant to be robotic single-rider mounts, i looked at motorcycles a lot. this first full-body pass was made by photobashing pictures of motorcycles together, which i then drew on top of. the head is very hzd-inspired, and while it wasn't the right vibe again, the single eye stuck.
once i'd decided i liked the single eye but not the head shape i currently had, i did more exploration on it. these sketches are from when i was sitting sleep-deprived in a cafe:
(the head ended up being a fusion of the top two. the jaw spikes were meant to be included, but eventually just got kind of fused into the jaw-piece.)
here are the first drawings of him with that head, when i was also trying to figure out how he would emote with only a single eye and the ears:
and over time, i just... kept drawing him, keeping some things the same, changing some things to fit my shifting tastes. through just on-going trial and error, both visual and "what elements do i need for plot / story things", he evolved over time, until i got the zarian we know and love today.
(this model is a bit out-dated now, but most of the main bits are there.)
oooooh pokemon company want to put all their energy into z-a sooooo bad. You will not release a half assed johto or unova game you want soooo badly to make a good game that everyone enjoys.
Playing the MYST games always makes me think about how awesome it would be to have my own book world with a house full of steampunk contraptions. So the Riven remake inspired this redesign of my IRL bedroom complete with steampunk aesthetic, vaguely antique electronics, and some random mechanisms.
Took me a while to decide what to do with the back wall and stuff on the dresser. I have a TV, game consoles, and shelves of games there, but that felt like too advanced technology to incorporate into this scene. I ended up just making it a projector setup and a rack of film reels. And more copy/pasted books to fill the remaining empty space.
I know it won’t happen, but I’d love a Layton Brothers Mystery Room port to the switch. Like for the announcement they play the beginning bit of the game with Alfendi having his little dramatic monologue backdropped by rain and thunder. But between the thunder flashes there’s maybe some animated scenes of the Forbodium Incident. You kinda see Al and Keelan running in the castle, and some hard to distinguish angles of the rooftop standoff, mixing the rain and thunder from the flashback to the present monologue. And that’s the video introduction for the switch port announcement.
(they met because of a zoomer accident, Evelyn's just stopped mid flight and she got almost sent into a building because of the boys // she's lucky she didn't get hurt more-)
i've determined i will probs never play minecraft again bc the sheer amount of content, while amazing, also is overwhelming to the highest degree but gameplay videos are highly enjoyable. also since finding creativerse it just hits better and terraria is like my happy (moddable) medium.
so a little after christmas i decided to mod my 3ds. and i got the roms for like all the ds sonic games. including chronicles. this was such a good idea im so glad i get to play such a legendary game. legendary as in bad legend but legendary nonetheless
