Hi @potahun, I'm your gifter for the Heishin Valentine Exchange and I picked your Ghibli movie prompt and went with Howl's Moving Castle c:

It took me a bit of time to figure out which character I wanted to be who, but I settled with Shinichi as Howl and Heiji as Sophie! I think the idea of Shinichi being an other worldly character like Howl isn't too far off from how he is depicted in canon. From an outsider's perspective, Shinichi seemingly has all the answers to the many cases he comes across. Especially with the way Heiji reveres Shinichi, it's not hard to see him as someone larger than life. (Also Shinichi transforming into a bird creature whenever he intervenes in the war kind of fits with how he transforms into Conan in canon as he investigates the Black Organization)

As for Heiji as Sophie, I feel that putting Heiji in a position where he becomes old can parallel his struggle with his family's (particularly his father) distrust in him being a teen detective. But in this case, Heiji initially fears that growing old hinders his ability to remain a detective. Throughout the course of the film, his fears would be assuaged as Heiji helps end the ongoing war in spite of his age.

Now for the art itself, originally I wanted to pick one scene to focus on so that I could combine this prompt with your Heishin whump prompt. But then I figured it would be neat to take inspiration from the movie's song Merry Go Round of Life. The large ring was intended to mimic the roof and rim of a merry-go-round. Like imagine the roof and then you squish it down (if that makes lol)! The rims on merry-go-rounds often feature a circular frame with images of landscapes within. For that, I recreated backgrounds from the movie.

Given the name of the song, I felt that I should recreate different scenes from the movie to show the progression of Heiji and Shinichi's lives (I would've drawn Heiji much older but I was just struggling on how to execute that properly TT-TT). From right to left the scenes are; Shinichi intervenes in the war; Heiji views the meadow Shinichi shared with him; baby Shinichi cronches on a star; Heiji watches the parade celebrating the war effort; and Shinichi stares fondly at Heiji within the castle.

Heiji and Shinichi are both criminology majors and are competing (in Heiji’s mind) to be top of the class. Unfortunately the two of them have completely different schedules and have never met. But how can Heiji focus on beating Shinichi in the class ranking when the new barista at his local coffee shop keeps distracting him from his studies by being so damn smart and charismatic.

One thing that cracks me up about Detective Conan is that of all the people that Shinichi surrounds himself with, it’s is the exact handful of people who are willing to make mental leaps such as “16-year old shrinking to a 6-year old”, like that hasn’t been a scientific impossibility for all of forever

Like. Instead of adhering to common sense, he is friends with everyone who decides nah, I’m not gonna do that today and this child is actually my best friend/this random dude I’ve only met once who is and has documented pictures of being 16.

It’s just kinda hilarious that with any other group, his identity would probably be just fine, but no. He surrounds himself with the only people in the universe who would believe that, willingly or not.

detective conan seriously needs to stop wasting our time and end already. gosho just keeps introducing more and more characters that we either don't care about or are just there to be the love interest.

i love dcmk, i really do. but, and i can't believe i'm saying this, it's too long!! and, trust me, i'm no slouch when it comes to length. (aka, has rewatched one piece at least 10 times).

but it's dragging out! it's clear that gosho has realised he has fans who will stick with it regardless, because the overarching plot is interesting, but how are we supposed to stay invested if we rarely get to see the plot?

there are less episodes where the black organisation appears than there are tv original episodes. don't get me wrong, i love... some of them, but i love the plot-heavy episodes so much more.

it has, canonically, only been six months since shinichi was turned into a child. SIX MONTHS! AND DCMK HAS BEEN OUT FOR 28 YEARS!!

we don't need each character to have a romantic sub-plot. we don't need an in-depth backstory for each character.

we don't need to see each and every case they come across.

i'm all for slice of life - i love it, in fact. but not when there's such a strong plot behind it.

i feel like the desperate revival arc should have been the turning point, where it starts to be more head-strong in the plot, maybe throwing in a kaitou kid chapter/episode for a break. but it doesn't.

instead, we are 210 chapters into the Rum Arc with no sign of it stopping soon. the bourbon and akai arc was 276 chapters, and we all remember how long it took for that to end.

i'm at the point where i just pick and choose episodes to watch, (thank you detectiveconanwiki), because nobody cares about the will they? wont they? for anyone but shinran and maybe heizuha but that's been dragged out more than enough.

seriously, heiji didn't realise he had feelings for kazuha until 600 episodes in? and he called kazuha 'his' but pretends he didn't because it wasn't as amazing as shinichi's confession? i stopped caring the second momiji was introduced because, oh, can't have a love story without an obstacle! FUCK OFF

ran's character went from a strong female woman who was struggling with the fact that the love of her life is gone, to 'help us, shinichi!'. like- come ON! she grew up with shinichi and you're telling me she doesn't have any deductive prowess? what happened to her suspecting conan of being shinichi? BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE SHE'S FORGOTTEN ALL ABOUT IT

and it's so hard to come up with your own ending, because there's still so much that hasn't been answered.

what is the aptx 4869 being used for? (have my own theory, and wouldn't be surprised if it was right). what is the 'silver bullet' haibara's parents were working on? what's the black orginisation's goal? is karasuma renya still alive? what is vermouth's relation to him? why hasn't she aged?

Pokemon AU (panels read right to left, start from the left page)

A list of everyone's teams are (warning: long post):

Shinichi/Conan:

Stoutland: He received it as a Lillipup from his parents and it has been his partner since. It's also a very responsible pokemon and makes sure Shinichi doesn't get into (too much) trouble.

Absol: He caught it in New York during the golden apple case. It's a very gentle pokemon but freaked Ran out when it first appeared.

Scorbunny: It's Conan's pokemon. It randomly started following him around during one of his cases, and he decided to catch it to try and separate Conan from Shinichi since Shinichi 'left' his pokemon with Conan but eventually got attached to it. It's very playful and has very strong kicks.

Ran:

Bewear: It hung around Teitan elementary when it was a Stufful, and Ran begged Shinichi to help her catch it since he was the only one with a pokemon at the time. Her parents were surprised when she brought it home, but it quickly became part of the family. It has a tendency to hug Shinichi a lot, who swears that it wants him dead.

Lopunny: Yukiko gave it to her as a gift before Shinichi's parents left. It's very strong and often accompanies Ran during karate training.

Minccino: It's not technically Ran's as she hasn't caught it, but it lives near the agency and always attempts to clean up Kogoro's messes. Ran's thinking about catching it but is worried that Minccino might not want to be caught since it was initially shy.

Sonoko:

Leavanny: Shinichi and Ran helped her catch it because she wanted a pokemon, and her mother wouldn't let her have one. She didn't like it at first but grew to love it after it saved her from an ursaring. Her mother wouldn't let her keep it at first, but she was stubborn, and eventually, her father convinced her mother to let it stay.

Furfrou: Her father received it during a business trip abroad, but didn't have the time to take care of it so he planned to give it away, but Sonoko begged him to let her keep it. It enjoys going shopping with her.

Meowth: It was Makoto's but it immediately got attached to her and since he goes on a lot of tournaments she offered to take care of it for him. It's protective of her (as all Makoto's pokemon are) which causes her to get a bit annoyed, but it's also very spoiled.

The Detective Boys:

Conan caught them because he believed the detective boys needed pokemon since they may get into some dangerous situations.

Ayumi has an oddish, Mitsuhiko has an elekid, and Genta has a magby. They happened to find the three while playing in a park and Conan decided they'd be a good catch since the three pokemon were already friends.

Eventually, the detective boys each capture a pokemon themselves as well. Ayumi -> Igglybuff Mitsuhiko -> Morelull Genta -> Cubone

Haibara

As Shiho, she didn't have any pokemon, as the BO only saw pokemon as tools/weapons and no members owned one. It took her a while before she opened up to the idea of having one.

Solosis: After deciding to have a pokemon, the detective boys make it their mission to find the perfect one. This lead to them being dragged into a case (as usual) which involved a man who worked a pharmaceutical company and solosis was his pokemon. They solved the man's death, with some assistance from solosis, who was left without trainer at the end of the case, so Haibara decided to take solosis. Since it helped its previous trainer with his job, it made an ideal partner for Haibara.

Gengar: Haibara caught it on her own. It would follow her around sometimes before she caught it (or solosis) and she'd make some analogy to it being a dark shadow of her past, so she fought it with solosis to stop it from following her, but ended up catching it. It ended up being Elena's old pokemon that was eventually released after her death. Although it seems like a scary pokemon, it is very kind and sweet and was following her around to protect her.

Agasa:

Magnemite: One of Agasa's first partners. It's very ditzy and clumsy. It would sometimes make its way to Shinichi's house and shock him in his sleep. It still does that to Conan whenever he comes over.

Klang: A pokemon Agasa caught when he traveled to Europe for a convention. It's a silent pokemon and loves to help Agasa around with his inventions. Shinichi says it's more reliable than Magnemite.

Togedemaru: Agasa recieved it from a trade with Fusae before she moved away. It is very responsible and overall Haibara's favorite due to the fact it puts a lot of effort into ensuring that Agasa maintains a healthy diet. Together, they are his nightmare. Shinichi, Ran, and Sonoko used to play a lot with it, as the detective boys do now.

Heiji:

Arcanine: On one of his 'adventures' as a child, Heiji found a wild Growlithe that was hurt. He snuck out a lot of food and bandages from home to try to help it until his parents found out and took it to a center. He was allowed to keep it as long as he didn't go out alone at night anymore (to which he agreed because you're no alone if you have a pokemon, right? Also, what his dad doesn't know won't hurt him.) As an arcanine, it's very loyal and strong, in which Kazuha says, "like trainer, like pokemon." It's also very playful and can pin Heiji down very easily when roughhousing.

He also has a Braviary and a Sirfech'd (that he received from his father)

Kazuha:

Xatu: When she was a kid, she woke up one morning to a Natu at her window and swore to Heiji that it was a sign. She begged him to help her catch it and they spent the whole week trying to find it again before eventually giving up. When she woke up the next morning, she found it again at her window, and with no hesitation, she threw a pokeball at it and immediately caught it. She calls it her lucky partner. Heiji gets unnerved by its staring.

Kogoro:

Slaking: He caught it as a vigoroth when he was still on the judo team. It's generally a lazy pokemon, but when the situation arises, it's an excellent fighter. Shinichi privately calls it the "second embodiment of laziness" the first being Kogoro himself.

Watchog: It was Eri's. She left it with him to make sure he was taking care of himself, although he thinks it's more of a nagging nuisance instead.

There's more but I probably write that all later.

Literally just carrying him around on her shoulders or hip cause he has tiny legs and reaching things for him cause he has tiny arms and she's just smirking and happy and he's so damn tired of this shit but puts up with it.

SO TRUE BESTIE. She would totally carry Conan around Heiji style if the opportunity presented itself. God bless. Akai is not allowed to because he's too tall and Conan can't reach shit from his shoulders and bumps his head on all the ceilings. Jodie makes fun of him for it. Anyway,

Later on when I do write part 2 (which ig includes the separation arc then omgies reunion </3) which is current events! But at the end you do get a taste of part 2 ish! But like I said will go more in depth. On top of that I will do another post ig talking about more on the seafolks n etc.

Shinichi and Heiji actually meet when they are both children and spend with each other for a whole month together. How they meet is when kid heiji had a scuffle with his dad so he wanted to get out of the house so he kinda grabbed a few of his things and left because he just don’t want to be in the same premises so he just wonders about until he reaches to a beach which is the farthest away until he finds yknow entrances to secluded era. Which funny enough that’s where shinichi is.

Shinichi was technically left there from his parents because the Kudos wanted to wonder and got tired of being in the ocean traveling around and never staying in one place. So shinichi is kinda used to them traveling around the ocean until they stop at cove. Which he thinks oh we are taking a break from the constant traveling. Until his parents tells him to say here until they come back! Which isn’t the first time they left shinichi alone, they go for a few hours then they’ll come back. Unfortunately for shinichi his parents didn’t came back because they left to travel on land. Until the first day during the late hours of the night that shinichi realized they are not coming back so he stays where they left him thinking they’ll come back to him and just continue what they do… He kinda scraping by because he knows how to hunt but is more left to his parents. That’s until he sees a creature? No that can’t be right…probably a kid like him but in two legs and just going about like his frustrations and crying while at it.

Heiji kinda tired himself out so he’s just head in his knees not really focus on his surroundings at the moment so he’s not seeing shinichi dragging himself out of water then tru sand to him. When he feels someone is like watching him, he raises his head but funny enough shinichi was super close to heiji so they kinda bump faces. So they both go oweww…then shock because alone to a space for burst of emotions then the next second of legit in front of you is a creature of the sea just cladding your face, which his palms are super soft, caressing for comfort and some low chirping? because you dumped faces is kinda crazy for afternoon. Minus the insane emotional breakdown you had a while ago with still tear marks on you but wow! Vs shinichi interest in the kid in front of him like woagh…pretty eyes….and 100% feeling his life source via his palms and trying to comfort him because he saw Heiji very distressed sooo shinichi copying what his mom does to him when his upset.

So funny enough they try to communicate but sadly there’s a language barrier between them because the mermaids have their own language going on while on land has its own. Shinichi does know a few words but not a lot because the Kudos didn’t really teach him (when they know a lot about it) they would until he was ready to shift into yknow “having two legs and looks human passing” so they can all travel together but sadly didn’t happen but we get omgies teaching each other language and heiji brings books to shinichi so he doesn’t get bored, this where shinichi fascination starts and becomes a bookworm, obviously he likes mystery books n etc. He also brings stuff to makeshift a tent and other things! Bc Heiji does sometimes sleeps at the place with shinichi! Gets to a point they cuddle/sleep together under the tent. heiji does start a routine with shinichi to like see him everyday and etc. There’s a time Heiji didn’t came to visit Shinichi because he was introduced to Kazuha bc his parents kinda noticed that Heiji would come very late or even in the next day so thought needed like a friend because they legitimately didn’t know where so talks here and there so evil meet up. Heiji didn’t like the idea at first bc he does have shinichi but he can’t do a lot of stuff with him because he’s stuck at the cove. So funny enough kazuha and Heiji goes along well but unfortunately shinichi kinda having the doubts about Heiji never coming back like his parents but this didn’t last long, Heiji did appear and shinichi kinda burst emotionally because the friend up to perhaps crush abandoned again but is fine!! Heiji was like what I’ll never abandon you ever. I just was making a new friend and I can’t really take her here. Kazuha does get the shinichi this and shinichi that but never seen this other kid that Heiji talks about a lot.

There is another scene that a festival does happen in Heiji’s town, he does mention to shinichi and that he would love to take him with him but he doesn’t know how but is fine! He’ll spend the time with shinichi! Shinichi kinda doesn’t want to see Heiji sad/disappointed so he kinda focuses hard to shift/removing his pelt which he kinda succeeds but not fully (you can see his ears, hands, teeth and a few markings that didn’t fully shift into human) which to surprise Heiji which he did and was like blinks and stares we can go! But let me get you something… so YAYYY they go out and is the best time shinichi ever had and they have holding hands all the time because shinichi the fear of loosing Heiji but Heiji is like just hold my hand! So we don’t get separated(like otters and while holding hands all the time shinichi feels very safe and comfortable because he can feel Heiji life source moment so he having the best time of his life) Funny enough Kazuha does meet shinichi and likewise but shinichi kinda shy away but they had fun!

Gets to a point where shinichi actually likes likes Heiji to where he gives his special gem aka a proposal gem that you give to your mate, mind you Heiji doesn’t know this he knows that’s is important and he’ll keep it until he dies BUT Heiji likes likes shinichi too!!! was gonna tell him that <- already proposed to fiancé in a sense because he did accept shinichi’s gem! Then heh this where I rip you apart they get separated because the kudos comes back to get shinichi and leave the place. Shinichi was very reluctant to leave but he left without saying goodbye to Heiji. Heiji comes to see shinichi and tell him something important but when he got there he wasn’t there and he checked the only thing he has from shinichi is the gem he has and shall treasure it until they meet again. Which they both forget each other! Heiji only thing to remember is the gem while shinichi remembers vividly his eyes, the festival date and the cove he stayed.

Shinichi when he gets older he goes to port to port, town to town just to read all the books in the bookstore and to remember that night (aside from Heiji eyes he vividly remembers the festival he spent and the cove) so he ask around n stuff after he’s done he disappears to leave for the next town funny enough the time the lands on heijis port town he kinda remembers the street n stuff and ask the question and get a yeah we do celebrate said festival n stuff and ironically enough he gets a glimpse of Heiji in the crowd bc that person looks very familiar moment to he trails after Heiji (even when Heiji leaves with a small vessel from his town shinichi follows him and that’s how shinichi legit saves Heiji instantly)

My @heishinvalentineexchange2025 gift for the immensely kind and patient @caliowl333, who graciously allowed me to participate with a video instead of fic or art! (And wrote me a 20,000+-word piece in exchange?! Oh my goodness!)

When I first began seriously video editing, I didn't think much about composition or how well clips flowed together—lyric sync was arguably my main goal, and anime pieces were thrown onto the timeline pretty much purely based on that.

Now, I put much more care into the very visual elements—the effects, the match cuts, the dazzle. But in the process, I fear that I'm losing what audiences found engaging about my early videos: the actual ideas.

So, for this AMV, I aimed to put the most effort into a strong concept. The titular "other side" is a world without the Black Organization, where Shinichi can freely be himself. Heiji is waiting for that world, where he no longer has to lie and pat Conan's head and pretend that they're not peers, and Shinichi is dreaming of that world because he's always dreamed of working with somebody just like him. The thought of meeting Heiji someday, when he first learns of his existence (Episode 490), fills Shinichi with excitement. He does a lot on his own, but he also loves working on a team—and doing so, being with people, sharing his enthusiasm with others—is what he wants more than anything.

(Heck, there's even a piece of official art called "Conan's Dream Vacation" where he dreams of playing beach volleyball with Heiji and Ran and Kazuha—as himself.)

Sure, you could argue that Shinichi simply enjoys working with Heiji as Conan because Heiji treats him as he truly is. But the times he spends as Shinichi with Heiji point to the fact that no, he just really likes deducting with Heiji. Eagerness, big smiles—in "The Scarlet School Trip" (Episodes 927-928), involving Heiji in the case of the day takes precedence over solving it himself, as he immediately shares what he knows and even jostles Heiji awake when he learns more, before doing anything else, because there's no way he's going to solve it alone. He doesn't want to.

But as things are, being Shinichi is pain. He takes an antidote, but it's poison. Being Conan is what's become "normal" and "comfortable," but Conan can't be what Shinichi is to Heiji. Conan isn't strong enough to catch Heiji when he's falling. Conan can't save him from bullets. Conan can't even talk to him naturally without hiding and secrets. His dreams have become nightmares.

And it can't be easy for Heiji, either. To see someone you care about suffering. To know that Shinichi is in a dangerous situation—and involving himself in it applies that same danger to himself. It'd make sense for Heiji to walk away and wash his hands of it... but Shinichi really wants him to stay. Despite everything, he wants Heiji to stay. For that someday when they can be true partners "on the other side."

I tried to say other things in here, too. Shinichi cementing himself as a precious person to Heiji by countering his insecurities with a one truth prevails and this isn't a competition and you don't have to prove yourself to me. Heiji finding Shinichi even after becoming Conan because he'll always find Shinichi, no matter what, because he's dreaming of being "on the other side," too (even if he didn't know it initially). Shinichi pushing Heiji away with coldness because maybe it's selfish to want him to stay, maybe it's cruelty to involve him, but he can't deny that he cares, that he wants Heiji with him, that he doesn't want to do this on his own.

And while I maybe still went a little ham on the effects, I do hope my ideas are the strongest of all! "No effects" versus effects comparison can be found here!

I mean, throughout the show, he always gets comments about his accent being weird, and what not. It's not an overexaggeration on his part to be upset about someone mocking the accent and dialect.

Also, it's pretty clear he was doing a bad accent and dialect to make the culprit upset. It's not just about Conan not speaking it well. He was very much mocking it to make the other guy upset, and in doing so, also upsetting Heiji.

Usually, if someone gets upset about the way someone else speaks their dialect or how they use their accent, it's because they're used to people already mocking it and even finding it weird.

Now, I don't know what the overall deal is with Kansai dialect and accent in Japan, but as someone who gets actively discrimimated for my accent and dialect/regional language, I also get upset whenever someone who is not from here tries to talk with the accent or in the dialect, because most of the time it's just to mock, or because they find it funny to talk like that.

So, I think saying that Heiji cares about it too much, in a very negative way, feels weird. He had every right to be upset about it, even if it was just to find out the culprit
