2024 Year In Review

2024 was another intense year. It was the first time in twenty years I wasn’t scoring a show for TV, and I got to concentrate on finishing albums and starting new projects. The year began with the premiere of my chamber symphony for Alterity Chamber Orchestra in Orlando and ended with guest-vocalizing with the Losers Lounge Band on a Bowie classic at Joe's Pub in NYC. I completed new albums for Xordox and Venture Bros, to be released in 2025. I released an Archer Soundtrack album and scored a Harry Smith film for L’Etrange Festival in Paris. Worked with Laura Wolf on a new project and premiered my Ensemble project at the Big Ears Festival in Tennessee. Recorded many overdubs for the next Foetus album, also to be released in 2025. Began a new series of sculptural wall pieces. We lost Phill Niblock in January and Steve Albini in May. We lost my colleague Roli Mosimann in September. I still woke up 5am in a panic on too many occasions. As a cultural omnivore, many sights, sounds and stimuli penetrated me.

my immediate thought for 'older brothers best friend' is aussie bros being actual (adopted) aussie bros. reader is chris's best friend and felix is in love with them but has 0 idea how to talk abt it. where like... the seokmin-chan dynamic was "i'm worried abt how seokmin will respond :(", the chris-felix dynamic is "chris can never find out because he has so much dirt on me and i'll never live"

i like the idea that reader n chris meet in high school and just click together rly well lol and felix starts crushing on them after reader shows up to a swim meet a few years later while felix is a freshman. reader's cheering on chris and felix because they wanna be supportive and reader hugs felix afterward and he's like omg (flustered). he doesn't act on it for a while because he thinks the crush will go away, esp after reader goes abroad for school, and then they come back and felix's crush comes back in full force. all of his friends (the rest of the 00z + jeongin) know the lore by now and have been sworn to silence. there's just some sort of rekindling of things, both have matured a bit, and its kind of a "im getting to know you again and oops we're falling in love" while reader and felix scramble to keep their relationship hidden from chris (bc reader, like felix, also knows how much dirt chris has on them. neither part of this relationship will get to live with chris around)

i like to imagine that eventually it leads to a big fight because i live for the drama in fiction lol where chris finds out and he's hurt because two of the people he loves most have been hiding this from him and he feels horrible because why wouldnt they trust him??? reader calls things off with felix because they feel guilty for hurting him, felix is upset and feels guilty for hurting chris as well, and the three start to avoid one another fully after the fallout. it 100% takes the rest of their friends to trick them all into the same room and being like 'ok work this shit out because ur depressing us.' they work things out, probs w chris admitting he never wanted them to hide their relationship and he def didn't want them to break up as a result, he just wishes they had talked to him, etc. and they work things out and happy ever after :)

and then he turns around to reader and hes like "i need you to pretend to date me. don't ask questions." and reader (his friend and coworker) is like. uh. my guy, i kind of have to ask questions rn. and seungmin starts telling this long story about how he saw his ex out in public and they're dating someone new and they were kind of a shitty person when they dated and turns out they're still shitty bc they saw the chance to put seungmin down because ohh ur not dating anyone? of course ur not :) and hes like ACTUALLY I AM (pulls up picture of him and reader when they were hanging out) they're hotter than you :) and now he's invited to some party that he knows his ex will be at and he needs reader to go with him. readers like whats in it for me tho other than showing up ur bitchy ex. and seungmins like idk ill cover one of ur shifts.

thats not enough and he ends up promising to take u out for whatever food afterward and covering one of ur shifts as soon as u need it (barring him having any personal emergencies/being physically unable to cover it). reader is 100% the one who kisses seungmin's cheek while at the party...

and probably also the one who yanks seungmin in to make out with him in a bedroom when they hear seungmin's ex wandering around for him. they absolutely pull away and are fine right after its all over. the two probs keep up the fake dating for a while w the PDA becoming more and more common until seungmin just looks up one day and hes like

Finding You (Part 4)

Buck's eyes caught on the photo frame, just as they had every time he walked into Eddie's house since the picture had been placed there, close to two years ago now.

It was them, arms around each other, though they'd been complete strangers the night before it was taken. Standing in front of a vintage fire engine — it felt something like fate, like a promise from the universe, bringing them back together.

Beside that picture were two more — one of Christopher and Shannon, and the other— the most recent addition — taken in the photo booth at May's graduation party a week before, Chris standing between Eddie and Buck, all three of them grinning at the camera.

"Eddie?" Buck called. "Good to go?"

"Almost!" Eddie's voice came from down the hall. He emerged from Chris's room holding a Lego set. "He forgot to bring it with him when Carla dropped him to school, apparently he needs it for show and tell. Do you mind making a stop?"

Buck laughed. "’Course not. We'd better get going, though, unless we want Bobby to write us up for being late.”

They’d been car-pooling, ever since Chris had done a project on climate change and insisted they start doing something to reduce their carbon footprint. He’d also been strictly monitoring their recycling habits, leaving sticky notes every time he found something in the wrong trash can.

Buck could never say no to that kid, and a little extra time with Eddie before and after work was always welcome.

They just about made it to work on time, slipping in the door just as Bobby was beginning his morning briefing.

It was a good day.

Until it wasn't.

A fire at a storage facility, which wouldn’t have been too bad, except it was on an auction day, and there were an unknown number of civilians inside the units.

Buck and Eddie walked through the hallways, knocking on each door they passed, making sure nobody was left behind.

They found one container with the door slightly ajar. No response, but Buck went in just to check, and Eddie followed him.

The door swung shut, slamming with a heavy thud.

They couldn't open it.

"Try the light?" Eddie suggested, but Buck couldn't find the switch.

Eddie radioed the team, letting them know what happened.

"Any sign of fire near you?" Bobby asked. "Any injuries?"

"Just to our pride," Buck answered. He heard Chimney laugh, meaning he'd taken the time to hit the button on his radio just so they would hear.

Rude.

"Alright, sit tight, guys. We'll get this fire under control, take care of our victims, then we'll come get you."

"Got it, Cap," they both confirmed.

Buck felt along the wall until he found a spot where he could sit.

"Guess we've got some time to kill," he grunted, shifting his weight slightly to get comfortable.

He heard Eddie moving around, then a clatter, swearing, and Eddie was tripping over Buck's legs and falling to the ground.

"Shit!" Buck reached out to help him up. "You okay?"

"All good," Eddie groaned. "Just a little bruised, I think."

"Maybe we should stay in one spot, while we're stuck here in the dark," Buck suggested, helping Eddie get situated sitting beside him.

"Probably for the best."

Their shoulders pressed together in the dark space, and Buck turned his head in Eddie's direction, even though he could barely see his outline.

"How long d'you think it'll take them?" Buck asked.

"No idea. It's not so bad here though."

"Are you kidding? It smells like something died."

Eddie laughed, Buck slowly joining him.

"You heard Maddie's news, right?" Buck asked after a few moments. Her and Chimney had just started telling people about their pregnancy, and Buck had been dying to talk to Eddie about it.

"You were there when I heard it, Buck," Eddie laughed. "Or should I be calling you Uncle Buck?"

Buck snorted. "You know, I had no idea what Chim was referencing when he said that at first? He had to sit me down and make me watch the movie so he could keep making jokes about it."

Eddie laughed again. "Why am I not surprised?" 

Buck nudged him.

"How are you feeling about it?" Eddie asked.

"Honestly? I can't wait. I'm gonna spoil the shit out of that kid."

"Really? I remember when Adriana had her first kid, I was… Well, excited isn’t the first word that comes to mind.”

Buck frowned. “How come?” 

He felt Eddie shrug beside him. “I just… I couldn’t picture myself as an uncle, you know? Then three years later, I was a dad, so.” Buck wanted to say something, but that was all so long ago, he didn’t know what he could say. He did the math in his head — it mustn’t have been long after Buck met them, he figured. He thought of the Eddie he had met back then, so young, so unsure of what he wanted. “I guess it’s different for you though,” Eddie continued. “You have more practice with kids than I did.”

“Thanks to you,” Buck said. They weren’t the first words that came to mind, though. No, the first thing Buck thought at Eddie’s words was I already feel like a dad. A frankly ridiculous thought to have about a kid he’d known for all of two years, not even a quarter of his life. 

Sure, he knew Chris cared about him, that he enjoyed their time together as much as Buck did. The three of them, Buck, Eddie and Chris, they just… fit together, in a way Buck had never allowed himself to think too closely on, for fear that it would all fall apart if he did. 

“You know,” Eddie’s voice broke through Buck’s thoughts. “When I told Chris the news, he was excited too. He said he couldn’t wait to have a new baby cousin.”

Buck turned red, suddenly grateful for the dark that surrounded them. “He did?” 

“Yeah.” 

“What did you say?” 

The pause before Eddie answered was a long one. “I didn’t correct him.” 

“Oh. Really?” The thought Buck had pushed aside before came back to the surface. If Chris thought of Maddie’s kid as his cousin, then it would suggest…

“Buck, I need to tell you something.”

Eddie’s voice was heavy with something Buck couldn’t recognise. It sounded serious, though. 

“You need to tell me something now? Here?” 

“I’ve chickened out too many times already, when there was somewhere else I could run, or when I could see your face.” 

“Okay. What is it? You’re making me nervous.”

Buck was ready for Eddie to say something which would hurt him. To say that he didn’t like how close Buck had gotten to Chris, how involved Buck was in their lives, that he was a burden on them in some way. Buck was the one who wanted to run now, to escape this conversation which neither of them would be able to move on from without something fundamentally shifting.

“I think I’ve been falling in love with you.”

It took Buck a full minute to process Eddie’s words. They couldn’t have meant what he thought they did, but he replayed them in his mind, and he couldn’t find another meaning beyond the obvious. 

Beyond Eddie loving him.

“Buck? Say something, I can’t see your face right now, and I need to know what—” 

Buck kissed him. Or, he tried to. In the dark, he sort of misjudged the distance between his face and Eddie’s, and the kiss landed what felt like somewhere between Eddie’s nose and his eye. 

He redirected, though, and this time he hit the mark.

He felt Eddie leaning into the kiss, lips soft against his own. “Eds, I started falling for you the day you sat next to me in a doorway in Boston, and I don’t think I ever stopped.” 

“Really?” Eddie whispered against his mouth, the sound sending a shiver down Buck’s spine.

“Really,” Buck assured him, preventing any further questions with another kiss.

Eddie’s gloved hand reached up to touch Buck’s face, and after a frustrated grunt it disappeared, replaced a moment later by Eddie’s warm hand. Buck pulled his own gloves off, pulling Eddie closer, sliding his hands under Eddie’s turnout coat, finding the warmth of his skin through his work t-shirt. 

Buck’s tongue darted out, and Eddie let him in with a soft noise. Buck moved, trying to get a better angle. This time, he was the one who fell, but Eddie didn’t help him up. He followed him down, until they were tangled together on the floor.

“Fuck, Eddie,” Buck sighed, feeling Eddie’s fingers slide through his hair. He lost himself in the kiss, the feeling of Eddie pressed up against him, lips pressed against lips, bodies flush from head to toe.

Buck didn’t know how long they stayed like that, but it was long enough for him to forget where they were and why, until he heard a crash from outside, followed by a stream of light pouring through the now-open door.

Eddie sat up, eyes wide in surprise, and Buck craned his neck to see the entire rest of the team standing in the doorway, staring at them.

“Why didn’t you guys radio to say you were there?” he asked. Eddie turned to look back at Buck, and it took everything in him not to pull him back down now he could see the kiss-swollen lips, glassy eyes and flushed cheeks, knowing he’d done that.

Chimney was grinning, gesturing to his radio. “You guys were kind of hogging the channel,” he said. 

Buck frowned and turned to look at his own radio. Sure enough, he was broadcasting. He must have hit the button when he fell back. His face heated up even more as he wondered how much they’d heard.

He pulled himself up to a seated position and switched the radio off, grumbling. 

“We thought you’d been injured at first, but… I guess not,” Bobby said. Buck fixed his gear, then helped Eddie to his feet. There was a moment, when their eyes met and Buck felt giddy, remembering those words. I think I’ve been falling in love with you.

Eddie smiled, almost shy, and Buck nodded, the smile on his face feeling like it might never leave. 

“We’d better go,” Hen said, interrupting their moment in a tone that Buck was sure meant they’d be discussing this later. 

The rest of their shift dragged. Teasing from the rest of the team, twenty minutes in Bobby’s office filling out HR forms, laying awake through the night in the bunk room because Eddie was right there in the next bunk over, just out of reach when Buck could be holding him close. 

He kept wishing for a call, just to stop him from saying screw it and doing something which would absolutely necessitate sitting through another round of HR bullshit.

Finally, their shift ended, and Buck followed Eddie to his truck, pressing him against the door and kissing him again. Eddie smiled against his mouth, then broke the kiss. 

“I gotta get home in time to bring Christopher to school. Meet me there?” Eddie asked. 

Buck nodded, kissing him once more, just because he could. He was barely inside his jeep before his phone was lighting up with a call from Maddie. He was surprised it had taken this long for Chimney to tell her, honestly, but maybe she had just been waiting for their shift to end so he couldn’t get away with inventing a call.

He turned towards Eddie’s, answering Maddie’s call on speaker and bracing himself for her to yell at him about being the last one to find out. 

He couldn’t even feel bad, not when he pulled into Eddie’s and let himself inside, not when he helped himself to a cup of coffee and waited for Eddie to get home from the school run, staring at the pictures of them on Eddie’s wall. He couldn’t feel bad, not when they’d greet each other at the door with a kiss when Eddie got home, then stumble back to Eddie’s room together, falling onto the bed to pick up where they’d left off in the storage facility, this time with light coming through the blinds so Buck could see every expression on Eddie’s face, every inch of his skin.

How could he be anything but the happiest he’d ever been?

The longest LazyTown episode clocking in at twenty-seven minutes. I am a bit annoyed because I should've waited until Christmas Time, but it's May so that'd be far too long of a hiatus.

It turns out the person who made Sportacus' calendar is a complete goddamn idiot, because it doesn't have any fricking dates on any page at all. It also turns out Mayor Milford Meanswell is a complete goddamn idiot (not that shocking) because while he rips off the YESTER DAY piece, we see a glimpse of 'FESTIVAL DAY'. Could be a hint to 'Sportscandy Festival', or Milford is just a goddamn idiot. Sportacus has HUNDREDS of balls..

..in the airship. He decides to decorate his airship in the most ridiculous but kinda cool way. He rides hid airship, making it go tipsy turny, so that all the Christmas ornaments go into this hole in the floor that has NEVER been there before.

So, he flips out of the skutla, and all the ornaments come flying out of one of the holes that Sportacus' football pops out of some time, and he hits them onto the walls with a ping pong racket. It also turns out that Sportacus is a complete goddamn idiot because he must've put glue on all the ornaments. There's no way they'd stick onto the walls in real life! Anyways, in the intro, unlike the normal title card, there is a Christmas version of the town instead! This is the third time the intro has been modified - Night time in 'Sleepless', and the paper plane flying near the airship and off the camera in 'Sportacus Who'.

So, Ziggy is so shocked by the snow he assumes it's present time, and annoys everyone. Milford is showing the kids the present he got for Bessie. Stingy is looking at the stockings full of presents. All this present talk aught to annoy someone, y'know?

Knew it. Anyways, he shows great annoyance about not being invited, but he says he doesn't care and wouldn't go if he wasn't invited. Ziggy is still asking if it's present time and Stephanie tells him to calm down (those damn presents ain't goin nowhere!.. unless stingy takes em), but french fry hair boy pops in with some trivia. Apparently Ziggy's eaten 162 pieces of candy in the past sixty minutes. Fatty. Robbie is still peeping in the lair when he has a great idea - to potentially kill everyone of frostbite.

At every Christmas party, Sportacus is the special guest of honor and he sits on the fancy chair. But he is going to make a GIANT snowball and launch it through the mayor's window so it hits Sportacus at exactly 6:00.

He has an invention for everything. So some gadget thingy majingy blows snow all around the lair, and he makes a giant snowball. In satisfaction of his work.. he kisses the snowball.

If there were different scriptwriters, at least ONE would make the snowball come to life, open it's eyes and say 'Ew!' and roll away from him. It'd be better that way. He carries it (isn't he the laziest dude in the town?) all the way to the cannon (which should be near his lair, Robbie, you goddamn idiot). Anyways, Stingy is being a selfish little jerk, writing a present 'To Me, From Me', the little moron. He needs to learn what Christmas is really about. Ziggy interrupts his jerkiness by going crazy about snow angels. Instead of JUST GOING TO DO IT, he keeps on yapping about it. Meanwhile, Robbie is reminded about the presents, but he doesn't know how to go there without being recognized. Then he has it - to dress up as a fat cookie (food) loving man - CaseOh.

Uh- I mean, Santa. Who stuffed up my 'Make fun of Robbie' paper with the 'Make fun of CaseOh' one?? Anyways, he performs Good to Be Bad. Meanwhile, Milford is putting up decorations ON A STRING, and he is ON A LADDER. Disaster is bound to strike, so Sportacus comes seconds before he even is in trouble! But if he WAS in trouble.. the crystal'd beep. And he saves him using a bowling ball.. and a skateboard. So that just when he trips and he is about to come falling down with the ladder.. he doesn't.

But Bessie tells him to come down because they still need to put nametags on the gifts (rat). So, Stingy is looking outside to see what happened and asks Bessie for her input on GIVING out gifts. Then he shows a disgusted face when she says it's better to give then recieve.

So he looks at all the gifts saying they belong to him and only him. Meanwhile, the kids perform 'I love Christmas' while Santa is sneaking around the town. When the song ends, Ziggy and Trixie start making snow angels, but Ziggy freaks out when he thinks he's lost his lollipops.

His lollipops aren't the only thing he may have lost.. Anyways, with the guidance of Sportacus, Stephanie starts building a giant snowman. Maybe to get in the Guinness Book of World Records? Ziggy walks up to the snowman and Stephanie questions him holding two lollipops. He lies that they're ears for the snowman (nobody puts ears on a SNOWMAN, but what'd I know, I live in AUS) and runs up to it and it all comes tumbling down. To the ground. So does Ziggy.

Stephanie is annoyed at him (when she JUST put the head back on in like, two seconds..), and Ziggy runs away of shame. Sportacus goes after him, where Ziggy reveals that at Christmas he gets so excited he eats a ton of candy, then he gets more excited and eats more candy, and gets more exci- you get me. And the remedy to his hyperness?

Why is it the carrots in this show look like a carrot I'd want to eat? The real life carrots taste horrible and are super hard to bite in! Deceiving us with sneaky little tricks.. So Sportacus throws the carrot (he wants some candy too.. JK) and uses it as the snowman's nose. Then he goes back to his ship. Meanwhile Stingy is hovering over some presents and he shakes gifts to guess what is in them. And in the progress, he breaks a glass one!

Meanwhile, Robbie's still sneaking around, and lucky him, because he's been caught by Ziggy. Robbie tries bribing him to go home with candy but Sporty already told him to not eat that stuff.. so Robbie gives him more, he eats it, goes wild, and tells him what he wants for Christmas.

That was the second scene I found funny in this episode. Try harder, whoever wrote this episode. Meanwhile, Bessie notices they have no Christmas tree, so everyone goes out to find one. Ziggy is still going on about what he wants for Christmas.

But the annoyance hasn't stopped there. Stingy comes with a big book of ALL HIS presents, which seems to have more then 300 pages. Clown. Anyways, everyone has gone away which is the perfect time for Robbie to sneak in, take the presents, and get out! Wouldn't take that long, heh?

Really? Couldn't he just go from the CLEARLY OPEN WINDOW?? DOES ANYONE IN THIS GODDAMN SHOW THINK? I love this show. But the characters are just brain-dead sometimes. Anyways, he takes the gifts and finds one with HIS name on it, literally.

He decides he can't steal their gifts and wants to go back, feeling remorse. Softie. So he goes back by the window and just sneaks back to the lair, right?

Oh my lord. So, Sportacus has to save him (crystal beeps). He flips over the table (he coulda just walked.), and pulls him out the chimney. Everyone discovers it's Robbie. Then they sing Bing- oh, yeah, 5 more minutes because holiday special. Anyways, he decides to go back, but being super kind, Stingy (normally an annoying, selfish unfunny rat) & Stephanie (always kind unless she's kinda annoyed) say he can stay. Robbie wants to start with the presents, but the others want to start with Bessie's turkey. Priorities, Robbie. Anyways, it turns out a bit better as since it is his first time, he gets to be the guest of honor.

Meanwhile, Ziggy is getting a taste of his own medicine when Robbie asks 'Twinky' if it's time for the presents. But he is not as hyper or loud.

This is so far kinda heartwarming. Robbie doesn't take as much candy as usual, he starts smiling, and he even says he is gonna have a big dinner. Nothing can go wrong!

Boom! The snowball comes flying out, and unlike the villian he is, Robbie actually warns everyone about the snowball. Sportacus starts cartwheeling on the table (he would have stepped on at least two pieces of food, come on), grabs a piece of mistletoe (Not in that way), wraps it around Robbie, then swings on the rope so Robbie dodges the snowball.

It looks like the chair came with Robbie, so either he grasped onto it with his butt REALLY tight, or Trixie put lots of super glue on his seat because comedy. Either way, if this was realistic, that chair would fall off and be in pieces right now. Anyways, the snowball hits the walls, and Sportacus grabs it and does a frontflip. While the flip was cool, it was cooler to know Magnus himself did it.

Sportacus thanks Robbie for warning everyone, who himself is questioning who'd do such a thing! Sportacus shrugs it off. Anyways, NOW they get into the presents, singing 'Bing Bang'. Apparently, Robbie knows what the present is before even opening it. And as Stephanie says it's a.. 'PAIR OF SOCKS?!'

He says he likes being bad and somehow the snowman smiles, so he takes off its head, throws it away (into the cannon on accident so the timer starts but shorter), and goes back to the lair. And he has a visitor.

The snowman's head falls on Robbie's head, and he's cold, and he can't breath, so he dies quickly. But this is a kids show and he sneezes because comedy.

5/10: Would be good as a regular episode, dull in some places, but didn't feel Christmasy enough.
