Logie and the Australian car incident

pairing: AstonMartin!y/n x Logan Sargeant (can be read platonically or romantically)

author's note: I haven't written any fanfic stuff in literal years (middle school me is quacking) but I tried my best with that one. Looking forward to any suggestions or critiques you may have :) (insert obligatory English is not my native language here) (please send promts!!!!)

The day starts off as any other day on a busy race weekend would and you are busy running around the Aston Martin garage making sure everything is in order before you return to your place at the back of the garage. You let your gaze sweep over the garage one last time before getting out your work phone and texting your boss, Lawrence, that everything is in order. The cars seem good, the mechanics had no complaints and Lance and Fernando were reasonably happy with everything. A satisfied smile washes over your face, your job was busy but reasonably easy, as the team caretaker your sole mission was to make sure the team was happy, the drivers taken care of, and the PR supervisors were not losing their minds running after their drivers while also texting Lawrence even the most minute details about his son and the other driver.

It seems quite redundant to you, but Lawrence Stroll pays well and who are you to turn down a job as a glorified team nanny.

You take a seat at the back and watch the first practice session absentmindedly, letting your gaze wander down to your phone occasionally, and scrolling through Twitter, scoffing at all the hate towards the current grid. It never ceases to amaze you how people can be so hateful, but then again, some people are just unhappy about their own lives. Looking up at the screen you watch a Williams car hit the wall on the right before sliding across the track and grinding its way to a stop on the left barrier. You gasp as you jump up, the rest of the garage wincing in sympathy as the car finally stops. You quickly turn to a mechanic nearby. “Who was that?”, you ask a little panicked as you watch the red flag fly and a driver in a Williams race suit climb out of the cockpit. “Albon, I think”, the mechanic replies helpfully as you try and suppress a relieved sigh. You still feel sorry for Alex but simultaneously thanking your lucky stars that Logan was not the one in an accident this time.

When Logan first got signed by Williams you both were ecstatic, you had met years ago when your parents had taken you on a vacation to Florida where you met Logan and you’ve kept in touch ever since. You had already been working for Aston Martin when Logan started in F1 and the fact that you could spend a lot more time together now served as further motivation to both of you to give it your best. You quickly shoot him a text, knowing he won’t be responding until later, before sending your boss a quick update and making sure the crash had not affected your team.

You honestly had forgotten you texted Logan in the first place as you watch the cars head out for the second practice session, Alex staying back in the pits, watching his teammate drive. You smile as you send Logan some memes you had found on twitter, knowing he would have a laugh once he got back to his room after the strenuous practice sessions of the day. Aston Martin, for once, had no major issues you had attend to and you could lean back and relax, as much as one in a Formula 1 garage can relax, in your seat while harassing the Aston Martin Instagram Admin with Memes you think they should be posting asap.

As the second practice session ends you help the team pack up and prepare for the next day as the drivers attend to their media duties and you stretch in relief as the first day of the Australian Grand Prix comes to an end.  After having everything sorted you get out your work phone and sign off for the day before taking out your personal phone and responding to some texts before checking your chat with Logan, seeing that he had read your messages but not responded. ‘You ok?’, you send him before shrugging off any worry you might have. Surely, he was just busy, after all, he was the only Williams driver that would be starting on Sunday. You really wouldn’t want to be in his shoes, the weight of the entire team and all the fans’ expectations resting on your shoulders. You might have a lot of responsibility but at least you were free of the expectations fans place on the drivers, mechanics and team principals.

You quickly slip into the shower of your private hotel room, a perk you were eternally grateful for, and put on some pajamas before order room service. You had earned it after all and looking after your figure was thankfully not a concern you had. ‘Ignoring your bestie? That’s not how I know you Loggie!’ you text Logan as you open the door for the food you had ordered and sit down before digging into the pepperoni pizza you had been craving for a week.

You startle as you hear a knock from your hotel room door. You shoot a quick glance at your phone, 11pm. You quietly approach the door and look through the peephole cautiously. Who would disturb you that late on a race weekend? Looking through the hole you see Logan at the door, his face unusually pale and his expression unnervingly neutral. Quickly you reach for the doorhandle, pulling the door open. “Logie? What got you a-knocking that late?”, you ask jokingly but the lighthearted smile on your face quickly fades as he stands on the swell of your door like a man lost, his eyes suspiciously watery. “Oh dear”, you mumble as you quickly pull him into your room and heard him towards your bed, letting him sit down before standing before him and looking at him with a stern expression. “What’s wrong?”, you ask, concern written all over your face.

He sighs, falling back onto the bed. “They’re taking my car.”, his voice sounds wobbly as he explains. “Who is taking your car?”, you ask, your voice confused.

“James. He said Alex has a higher chance of scoring and I get it, but I tried so hard, you know? They said they trusted me, and I was ready to proof how much I have improved and now I can’t drive at all. I didn’t crash the car! It’s not my fault! I didn’t do anything…”, he rambles, his voice flowing between sadness, anger and betrayal before ending in defeat. You look at him, he still has his upper body lying on your bed, his feet dangling off the side as he continues explaining what had happened. Quietly you sit down next to him on the bed and gently stroke through his hair as you let him talk out his frustrations. “y/n? What do I do now?”, Logan asks as he looks up at you, his eyes still wet but trying his hardest to not shed a tear.

“I will put the fear of God into that good-for-nothing son of a bitch.”, you explain very matter of factly. “I’m gonna walk down to the Williams hospitality and I’m gonna scream at your team principal!”, you declare with a huff as you get off of your bed and towards where you kicked off your shoes when you came back from the paddock earlier that night.

“Y/N, do NOT do that.”, Logan warns as he gets up and grabs your hand. “That is just going to make it worse.” “Okay but it’s also gonna make me feel a lot better ‘cause who does he think he is? Taking your car and giving it away. I’m gonna make him regret this entire week” you say angrily as you look up at him with determination and the wrath of someone who’s best friend was just wronged in your eyes.

“Please don’t”, Logan asks with sad eyes, gripping your hand even tighter. “Please just stay with me tonight, I feel sick. I just want to cry.”, he admits to you as you feel your resolve break. “But- “, you trail off as you watch him stand before you, his hand still tightly gripping yours. You sigh in defeat before squeezing his hand. “Right but only ‘cause you asked me to, if it was up to me…”, you stop, leaving the threat hang in the air of your hotel room as you head towards the small desk. “Pizza”, you declare as you shove the leftovers of your pizza into Logans hands. “My TV has Netflix, what do you want to watch?”, you ask as you throw yourself into the hotel room bed and turn on the flatscreen TV hanging opposite it.

Logan lets out a surprised laugh and sits down next to you, the pizza carton still tightly in his hands as he gets out a slice and lets you choose whatever show you find on the homepage. The evening continues in relative silence as Logan finishes the pizza and you sit in the bed, leaning onto each other. “I’m still sending him negative vibes, like spiritually”, you grumble as he giggles before slipping off to sleep for the night.

okay with Logan now on the same platform with the app/website as Alex, I did some digging and found some interesting (neutral) things. Maybe all this was already known but hey it was new to me so here we go under the cut

The host platform is called Fan Capital, it comes from the "dynamic collaboration of Dorilton Capital and Williams Racing," and they focus on fan monetization, digital engagement, and fan activations. Alex is actually an Advisory Board Member! (which makes a lot of sense) The platform launched in November of 2023, and currently Williams Racing, Alex, and Logan are the only customers (perhaps unsurprisingly). Their CEO spent three years as Williams's Chief Growth Officer before being appointed to CEO of Fan Capital (and he comes with past experience with the NFL).

One of my first thoughts was whether they'd integrate with the Williams Fan Zones, but a peak at their LinkedIn says that they've been the ones putting on the Fan Zones this year.

Fan Capital also seem to be the ones behind the Williams Garage AR thing that launched a little bit ago, as well as the Williams Gaming Club that launched at the beginning of the year.

Fun fact! Apparently 56% of their team are women (I think there's 9 women?). Yay I guess?

Logan was announced as their third client on January 23, 2024. The post included the line "his decision to join FanCapital supports his forward-thinking approach to building his digital presence." and all I could think of was "is that digital presence in the room with us?" LOL

Thoughts:

I would be the most interested to see if/when they add other drivers/athletes in other sports (would be surprised to see any non-Williams F1 drivers added though). It seems like Fan Capital are running ALL of Williams's fan engagement stuff, except for maybe social media admining (even then that's just a guess), so when they add non-Williams people it could be interesting to see how the close connection to Williams Racing plays out. Or if there won't be any real impact.

Could this mean we will get some new Logan merch? Part of me says no, since art/design does not seem to be one of Logan's interests (see: him saying doesn't even have the energy to design his own helmets) but ig he could always hire people to do it and have as little input as possible. But if that's how he's handling his social media then.....

Now for my tin foil hat thought: using Logan as a test/proof of concept for non-Williams customers? not in a this-was-their-plan-all-along-since-january type way but more in a taking advantage of the opportunity way. start working with him now and launch his website/app, then when he goes elsewhere (wherever that may be) bam they still have a link.

Anyway, this seems like a cool venture, and I do wish them success. From what I've heard the Fan Zones have been well-received, and I definitely have noticed an uptick in fan engagement beyond just social media from Williams. Hopefully this can also help bring people to the sport!

Forgive me for my awful grammar, I’m not that good at English-

About Nathan:

•Basic infos, he’s 17, about Kyle’s age— just a month or two older than him.

•Of Brazilian descent but has Chilean blood in him.

•Full name is Nathaniel Frederick Bernadez.

•Has undiagnosed ADHD.

•He has an older sister Lucille (basically Luna from OnC but she’s more normal about CJ than her canon counterpart). They both fan about On Command together.

•Transgender FtM and biromantic with a preferable lean for guys. (Pronouns He/they/dusk)

•Was scared of EteleD shitless, so much that he basically cut ties with Kyle for taking it for a prank, and told everyone on school about it, which lead to them getting bullied for 9 years straight.

Kyle forgives him for it but they’ve made it clear they don’t want anything to do with him for the timebeing. The closest they get to interact is just small talk and hello’s.

•He’s 16— only 25 days younger than Sam.

•Has three siblings and a cousin— basically the same people Rudolph (OyM) is related to

•Has never been close with their parents for unknown reasons, which means he and his younger sister was practically raised by their 2 older siblings in their absence.

•Their real name is actually Rudolph Forgers, but for confidentiality reasons had to psuedofy himself, so he currently goes by William Roberts.

•Currently figuring out their gender identity but knows they’re omnisexual. (Pronouns they/ey/he/she/rex)

•Does have a big crush on Nathan, but is scared they’d get rejected so they instead tone themselves and pretend he’s crushing on Cooper.

•He used to be jealous of Sam since Middle School because she was better than him in almost everything, and even had a loving mom. It never went beyond taunting and small shoving, though.

They’ve since sorted themselves out and are cool buddies.

ok so as i've said, each team has a finite amount of cringe per season, but the amount of actual cringe varies team to team. i rank them from least to most as follows:

10. red bull - perhaps i'm biased but since becoming champions, they've sort of just...lost all cringe? too much of a well-oiled machine to be cringe 😔

9. williams - they've evolved beyond cringe actually. you say cringe, they say we're just having a silly goofy time

8. aston martin - now don't get me wrong, they ARE cringe—their literal criminal enterprise/pink mercedes history and fall from grace only to rebound after removing the updates last year is enough to prove that—but a lot of that cringe is offset by how fucking cool they are (particularly their social media admin, and as we all know: a sick ass social media presence covers a multitude of sins)

7. mercedes - they think they're not cringe, but thinking that is exactly what makes them so cringe

roger and simon are canonically POC- i added this one because i often see fanart of them (mainly roger tbf, though i have seen some of simon as well) as white so figured it wasn't completely common knowledge. both are described as having darker skin tones in the novel.

all female lotf- the controversial all-female film adaptation of lotf announced back in 2017. the idea was scrapped (presumably due to backlash and staff changes) and it is now going to be an all-male adaptation directed by luca guadagnino! i'm so hyped for it!!!

pig's head is satan- the eponymous 'lord of the flies' is based on beelzebub, another title for satan (or sometimes a separate demon depending on who you ask)

piggy's real name is charles- not sure how common this is tbf but i often see people stating piggy's real name as charles in fanfiction. there isn't evidence for this in canon so i assume it is just a popular fan headcanon

nopeimnotrussian art- i see art by this person literally everywhere when i'm looking up lotf fanart and i only found out who they were today. they make a ton of jalph content and generally seem pretty cool.

lotf stageplays/musicals- i was going to list a specific example but there are so many of these it was difficult to choose one. i really want to see one someday

retribution- another popular lotf fanfic written by circadian lily on fanfiction.net/AmRye on AO3. i'd highly recommend reading this one, it's so good

lotf is a fanfic- lotf is partially a satire of 'the coral island' by r.m. ballantyne and other similar coming-of-age adventure stories for boys which were popular at the time. the main characters are called ralph and jack in both works, and some phrases in lotf are taken almost word for word from the coral island.

piggy's real name is peterkin- the character peterkin in the coral island (see above) seems to have partially been the inspiration for both simon and piggy. the name simon may have been based on peterkin (as peter from the bible later took on the name simon), but i like to consider piggy's real name to be peterkin since it isn't already being used by another character as it is.

eastern bunny- an artist who made several popular fanarts i often see being reposted (such as one of jack and ralph holding child versions of the other major characters, and one of jack holding a spear up to ralph's neck). sadly i'm fairly certain their tumblr has been deleted, but they are very talented and i love their work.

ralph's mum- ralph's mother is mentioned to have been absent from ralph's life in the book but it is unclear whether she left her family voluntarily or died. i've seen different interpretations in fanfiction.

characters that only appear in the 1990s movie- there are several characters mentioned by name in the 1990s movies that did not appear in the original book, such as dominic. i always feel excited when i see people mention them (same for obscure characters from the book itself like stanley and walter)

irl lotf- there are actually multiple cases of events similar to lotf occurring in real life, the most well-known one being this one i believe

Deep:

1963 movie deleted scenes- there are around 2 hours of additional footage which were cut from the 1963 film adaptation of lotf, including several important scenes which were key to ralph's character development such as the interaction between jack and ralph in chapter 3 of the novel. while i sadly haven't been able to find a lot of these deleted scenes, you can see some of them online such as the one i just mentioned, which is available here.

fable essay- this essay was written as part of a larger collection of essays entitled 'dreams'. it is included in the back of the education edition of lotf which is widely available in bookstores in my country (england), although i imagine you can find it elsewhere if you want to read it. it provides some interesting insights into golding's thought process while writing the novel as well as some extra details on characters and themes.

original first chapter- lotf originally had an extra chapter at the start which expanded more on the nuclear war occurring in the background of the present novel and the circumstances behind the plane crash which triggered the novel's events. this chapter was later cut as many of the publishers who rejected the novel particularly disliked it. the original draft of lotf is currently being held by the university of exeter in england. it's my dream to go and read it one day.

living lord of the flies- a 2013 mini-documentary narrated by tom gaman (who played simon in the 1963 movie) about the production of the movie and his experiences during filming.

alkitrang dugo- a lesser-known filipino lotf movie adaptation from 1975. i haven't been able to find this anywhere so i haven't seen it sadly, but i know it had both male and female characters stranded on the island.

jack is based on younger william golding- i don't remember where i read this so admittedly i'm not sure how reliable it is, but i feel that there is some basis to jack being based on william golding himself. golding was fairly problematic when he was younger (and in general actually), having once attempted to rape a 15 year old when he was 18, for example.

continuity errors- i thought i made a post on this a while back but i can't find it for the life of me (it might have been on the since-deleted lotf amino actually)- essentially, there a couple of continuity errors in the novel which i think about excessively even now, i.e.- henry is referred to as a littlun and a bigun at different points in the novel, maurice's height is inconsistent, and bill is simultaneously in both ralph and jack's tribes for a bit.

Mariana Trench:

lotf is set in 1952- i've seen a lot of debate about when exactly lotf is set, and there is technically a canon answer to this. in the original draft of lotf, the novel ends with the time and date: '16.00, 2nd October, 1952.' however, it's possible that this would have been changed in the final version of the novel. i personally headcanon the year lotf is set in as 1954, the same year it was published.

beating scene in 1963 movie was real- this scene was based on the scene in the novel where jack orders wilfred to be beaten for essentially no reason. in the movie, the actor volunteered to actually be beaten for this scene.

irl roger- the actor who played roger in the 1963 movie, roger (!!!) elwin, was basically just his character in real life. apparently he used to throw live lizards into fans while on set. when the production staff asked him why he was doing it, he answered that he wanted to see how many pieces they would be cut into.

rape scene- the scene in the novel where the boys hunt and kill the sow that later becomes the lord of the flies is apparently supposed to resemble a rape, illustrated by phrases such as 'wedded to her in lust' and by the place roger stabs her in. i was pretty freaked out when i first saw this interpretation of that scene, it gives an already disturbing scene an even darker context.

william golding performed social experiments on his students- golding was a teacher at bishop wordsworth school in salisbury, england while he was writing lotf. during this time he frequently ran experiments on his students in which he split them into groups and set them against each other, much like in lotf. some of the characters in lotf may also have been based on golding's students.

deleted jalph ending- while the lotf fandom wiki seems to be a bit better maintained now, when i first joined the fandom about 4 years ago it was super chaotic and filled with random edits. one of these was a claim that there william golding initially wrote an alternate ending to the novel in which jack and ralph get together, which was later removed. i just thought it was funny so i decided to add it here.

Well, that's everything! This post took me like 2 and a half hours to make, so I hope it was at least somewhat interesting/entertaining. While we didn't get any insights into anything going on at Ferrari, I always got the vibe that they are competitive and friendly, in a friendly coworkers way, that you like someone but it's also casual. I think pundits/commentators are also complicit in fueling this "omg bromance!!! Never been done before!!!" narrative. Like you said, Pierre and Yuki; Nicky and George... they all have a really good relationship with each other, the chemistry and vibes are great, and it's just nice. (Especially coming off the back of the Williams DTS episode where George is like, "if you need to compromise my race to help Nicky, do it"). But you don't see them getting half the attention that the new Ferrari lineup got. I know the fans across social media quite enjoyed both of those relationships, but in the wider sphere of the casual fans and media and so on...I mean, could you imagine if that was Carlos and Charles spotted on holidays together? Will Buxton alone would fangirl so hard he'd explode.

(General warning for subjective personal thoughts and opinions ahead):

They can totally have a nice, chill coworkers relationship when Carlos doesn't try to apply Lando Logic to Charles. Seb and Charles didn't get to where they are overnight either, the dynamic definitely took some figuring out, but they got to a place where their interactions are very...comfortable, natural? They clicked. Sometimes, I feel like Lando and Carlos's particular brand of humour isn't entirely compatible with Charles; that's why they play off each other's snark so well. And what works with Lando maybe can't entirely be replicated with Charles. Because he's a different person, with a different personality, and that requires a slightly different approach, and that's fine. So sometimes, like in that scene, the dynamic totally works, and other times it gets a bit awkward and potentially uncomfortable. At least for me, viewing it from the outside. The laugh imitation thing from one of the challenge videos comes to mind. It's moments like that that make me go a bit :/ But even so, I think I wouldn't maybe have as much of a negative reaction to them if it weren't for the oversaturation on the team socmed and also broadcast media side. It's just been a lot and I sincerely hope they cool it now that the novelty's worn off a little bit, everyone's sort of settled into their roles, and it doesn't have that shiny new toy factor that it did last year. Sometimes less is more🙏🏻

Miles Away Records: Turning Two and Being Nice

If everyone in the music industry was like Dom Williams, then the world of record collecting and buying would be a much more soulful, pleasant place.

He founded Miles Away Records in February 2019, with the aim of amplifying the sounds of soul from all over the world. Tonight at 6pm, Miles Away celebrates turning 2 years old with an event that sums up what the label is all about - generosity, friendship, kindness, and (of course) amazing music from all around the world.

Over the last couple of years, the independent re-issue label has received high praise from musical legends who really know their world-sounds onions, like; Gilles Peterson; Tim Burgess; and the Disco Freaks Coleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy.  Miles Away’s fourth reissue is a beautifully tender tune called Dancing Close by Rita Joyce. The latest 7” is a slower sound to their previous releases, but perfectly suited to listen at home with a glass of red, as opposed to on a dance floor with, perhaps, two glasses of red. The kind words the label has received hasn’t affected Dom’s ego, outlook, or approach to releasing music.

It has been enjoyable. Its really been quite odd actually. You’ve got this sole responsibility behind something that’s a reflection on your music taste and your practises. You feel sometimes that you do need to take a step back and think ‘oh wow this is pretty cool, maybe I would listen to this if I wasn’t involved’ which is a nice feeling. But at the same time, you inevitably look at what other people are doing and think ‘you can do this better or that better’. But that is just the way things are, you can only be what you’re about and if people like that, thats good enough for me.

Last year Miles Away celebrated turning one years old on a special night in Low Profile Studios, with other people in actual, physical attendance. Imagine that? Dom Ore, the DJ alias of the label founder, played alongside one of his finest contemporaries, Mr Bongo.

One of the key inspirations I say is always Mr Bongo. Not only are their releases really top quality but they are also the nicest people. When I’ve met them a couple of times they hand you over a couple of records and are really personable and really nice. For me its not just putting out the records and being good at that, its about a whole thing, being a nice person too and those guys are what I aspire to be. That’s literally it.

Theres a couple of other labels who are quality and produce quality records all the time, like Athens of the North and Expansion. Smaller record labels are also doing things in a really cool way like Fantasy Love Records who are releasing some really good crossover stuff. Deptford Northern Soul Club are doing really cool stuff too.

The success of an independent label is never guaranteed. Especially now in these times and there’ll always be an element of a lottery about whether a re-issue will be loved or not. But, you rarely meet people who are happy to admit that level of jeopardy. The novelty of a fan picking a record from the Miles Away collection has not gone away.

Thats another thing, when you see the pre orders coming in. This person has chosen to buy this record over a number of other records which is crazy, why would they choose this over anything else. But you get nervous, its a leap of faith, thinking is this going to be good? Are people going to like it?

Sometimes they might not. I guess that’s just the way it is and each time you learn a bit more about what people like and how they like it. The Rita Joyce track was the one I was most nervous about coming out because it was a slower track and it wasn’t necessarily one that the typical crossover fan might go for. But as time has gone on other people have played it, so maybe the rare soul fan or whoever hasn’t played it as much. But people like Charlie Bones are playing it and Lefto on Worldwide FM and other DJ’s which is cool, so you extrapolate the tracks, you know.”

Disco Freaks has had the honour of knowing Dom for a little while now. But, nobody wants this interview to become a bit of a puff piece, just because he is so down to earth and easy going. So, I felt comfortable pressing him on some topics more so than our usual guests. I went big and asked some tough Q’s. Had he been tempted to flout any lockdown restrictions or DJ at a lockdown party? Had he ever killed a man? Or even worse, has he got a history of disrespecting Spandau Ballet? But I got nothing. He’s got no criminal record and he appreciates Beggar and Co.’s influence on ‘Chant No. 1’. Therefore he’s clearly a man of honour and Miles Away’s plans are as level-headed and hopeful as its owner. 

The ambition is definitely over the next few years is to make Miles Away more of what its supposed to be and that’s not just soul music from America. Its more about being from different places in the world.

Thats something I’m really trying to do, so thats really the ambition. I like releasing records so I want to keep learning about it, approaching it in different ways and learn about different approaches to releasing records. I enjoy it, so I just want to carry on doing it and hopefully get to a 3rd birthday without going bankrupt.

For the sake of amazing new reissues and good vibrations in the music industry, we hope the bailiffs will forever be (sorry) Miles Away.

The Miys, Ch. 46

I’m on a roll!  Yet another chapter beta’d by @parisconstantine (in which I learned about French terms of affection), and I’m already 1600 words into chapter 47.  I’m not sure if the next chapter will be a long one or if I’ll end up splitting it into two parts. Time will tell on that front.

Oh! Oh!  Sam and Simon both get last names in this chapter!

This covers the first six hours of the Food Festival, so minor mentions of food.  I can’t think of any other warnings beyond that, but if you find something please shoot me a message so I can update it.  I’m learning every day about things that trigger people, so sometimes I miss things that aren’t glaringly obvious.  However, I’m always willing to learn.  At the end of the day, this is very slice-of-life, after all.

Edit:  I am reposting this, for 2 reasons.  Most importantly, I included some characters in this chapter who I need to attribute to their rightful creators.  So, Thank you @charlylimph-blog for Ivan Thorson and Coffee Williams.  You are an incredible writer, and I didn’t want these two to languish in obscurity after all the hard work you put into submitting them for the last contest.

The second reason is just because I posted it too early and wanted to put it out there for the people who look for my chapters on Tuesdays.  I love you all!

“Okay, everyone for Alpha Shift, sound off.”

“Tyche Reid, Admin Observation, is online.” I could hear the smirk in my sister’s voice.

“Antoine Costa, Support Personnel, online.”

“Sophia, do I really have to do this?” a familiar voice wheedled.

“Yes. I need to know who is my eyes and ears on the ground.”

“Ugh. Zach Khan, Support Personnel, online.”

“Derek Okafor, Civilian Observation, online.”

“Sam Richardson, Civilian Ob-observation, o-o-online.” I couldn’t help grinning that Sam agreed to help out.  Usually, he kept out of any operations on the ship, but he was the original tester for Antoine’s project, so he had just assumed he would be part of today’s actions.

“Maverick Okima, Support Personnel, online.”

“Alistair Worthington, Resource Adjunct, online,” my assistant dutifully called off in a bored tone. Only I could see the sardonic look he shot me.

“Sophia Reid, Resource Command, online,” I breathed in relief.  “Thank you, everyone. You have two objectives today: first, a general assessment of the low-stim session so that we know what we did right and what we can improve on in the future; second, getting feedback on how Mr. Costa’s dampening and proximity updates to the translation chips are working, again with a goal for future enhancements.  Tyche Reid has graciously volunteered to be our control on the chip project, so she will be providing only a baseline evaluation of the low-stim session and the quiet rooms.”  In reality, my sister wasn’t volunteering so much as refusing to get the upgrade until I agreed to do the same.

“Soph, if you are going to keep being so formal, we may as well shut this down now,” my sister huffed. “Mr. Costa my foot.”

“I’m trying to be professional,” I grumbled back. “This is an official Council operation, to be saved for posterity.”

“Do you truly believe that Xiomara will tolerate being referred to as ‘Miss’ or ‘Councillor Kalloe’ for six hours, Sophia?” Antoine asked smoothly.

Fighting back a chuckle, I refused to concede his point. “That’s Simon’s problem, not mine. She and I are on shift in the festival at the same time, so Simon will be running the show from here.”

“And you have deluded yourself to believe that Mr. Rodriguez will continue to address everyone formally?” Alistair scoffed. Et tu, Brute? I had argued with him for weeks to call me Sophia.

“If you start calling me Mr. Okafor, I’m going silent until this is over, Sophia,” Derek threatened.

I threw my hands up defensively, even if most people couldn’t see me. “Fine! I get it, I get it. I’ll chill out with the names, but I am going on record that it was under duress and threat of operative failure.” I shook my head and took a deep breath. “Okay, so, back to the point.  Tyche, your job is providing an assessment of the low-stim Festival session, as it appears to someone without the implant upgrades.  Derek and Sam, your jobs are to evaluate the session with the upgrades.  I need all three of you to report back two specific things: what worked better than your past experiences, and what still sucked.  Maverick, Zach, and Antoine: you are there both in your capacities as support personnel in case something goes horribly wrong, and to make sure I hear about anything they don’t realize shouldn’t be happening.  Everyone clear on your jobs?”

I got six affirmative answers before continuing. “Okay, other than that – have fun!  Try new foods, let me know what to try when it’s my turn, just enjoy yourselves as much as possible!”  With that, I left the group channel open and watched the map of the festival.  The three teams were entering from different points to ensure that, between the six of them, everything could be evaluated. In theory, everything should go off without a hitch.  The vendors were already briefed to be prepared for attendees during this session to provide a list of flavor and texture aversions, and Miys was already stationed in security alcoves to ensure that the vendors were complying and attendees weren’t abusing it.

It was only fifteen minutes before we got our first update.

“Team Try New Foods, reporting early success,” Zach Khan’s voice broke in. “Kosher food stall was an overall hit, the Jainist stall admitted they had nothing that Derek could like except papadums, and Derek tried both falafel and chicken tikka masala.  Jury’s out on the masala, but he likes falafel.”

“I really thought falafel would be too squishy,” I admitted.

“Apparently not,” Zach chuckled. “He said it’s like a meatball, but no meat.”

“I mean, yeah,” I agreed, still dazed. “That’s cool, though.  And the Jainist vendor didn’t give him a hard time about the list?”

“Nope,” he popped the last letter, something he tended to do when he was really excited. “Just smiled, read it, and apologized that everything he had was either spicy, sour, or squishy.”

“How did the Kosher and Halal vendors react to the list?”

“Thoughtfully,” Derek interjected. “The Kosher vendor clarified if I like onions, and the Halal vendor just wanted to know if I meant pepper-spicy or herb-spicy.”

Awesome. “Good job, guys. And congrats, Derek, on the new foods.  Keep it up and let me know.”

Thirty minutes later, not everything was sunshine and rainbows, though. Sam and Maverick had so far reported three vendors whose stalls were too pungent to approach, and Alistair was already in contact with and arguing about the need to keep the dishes covered during the low-stim session. “I understand that the smell is what draws people in, usually, ma’am, but you agreed to keep all smells to a minimum for the first six hours. That includes keeping the atmospheric scrubbers engaged and keeping the dishes sealed.” When the woman on the other end started to argue, he swiftly cut her off. “When you signed up to be open during this session, you were given a list of the restrictions, and you signed off on it. Low Stimulus, and that includes stimulating the nose. You can either seal the food, as you agreed, or we can have your stall closed down for the remainder of the Festival, per the agreement you signed.” With that, he disconnected sighed before turning to me. “So rude,” he informed me with a shake of his head.

“Which stall was that?” I asked, wrinkling my nose in dread.

“Fortunately, just the seafood stall,” he explained. “Along with the Cajun and Jamaican stalls.  So, pungent, but no one has reported nausea as of yet.  Miys is already in the area, trying to dissipate the odor.”

“As long as it isn’t the Japanese stall,” I gulped. They had insisted on serving natto, but explained that it would be sealed in individual portions throughout the festival, and only opened by the person eating it.  While I couldn’t exactly argue, I didn’t have to be happy about it.

I heard from Tyche right at one hour into the event.

“Soph,” my sister practically shouted at me. “Do you want to explain to me why one of the Quiet Rooms looks like you robbed my quarters?”

Oops.  Forgot about that. “Tyche, they’re designed to be relaxing, quiet, and provide low stimulation.  I can’t help it that your quarters are practically a smooshy cave.” Three, two, one…

“A hammock!?” she demanded. “Why don’t I have a hammock?”

“Make up your mind, Tych. Are you offended that the room looks like your quarters, or jealous that it’s better equipped?”

“Both. Definitely both,” she asserted. “Ooo, you included the sound scrubbers we had installed in your quarters, didn’t you?”

“I knew it!” I almost shrieked. “I knew it sounded muffled in my quarters since I got back!  That was completely uncalled for, you brat.  You know I’m hard of hearing!”

“You also have an implant in your brain that directly translates language into your auditory cortex, so it’s not like you couldn’t hear us,” she pointed out. “And all your alerts and alarms were already calibrated for you to see them as well as hear them. What I don’t understand is why you never had Miys fix your hearing.”

“Are you kidding?” I scoffed. “Loud noises are bad enough as it is.  I can’t imagine how it would be if I could hear them better.”

“Aaannnnnnd that’s why we put the scrubbers in your quarters,” she finished. Well, walked right into that one, I admitted to myself. “This room is nice, by the way, once I got over the shock. Quiet, relaxing on the eyes and ears. How buff are the atmo scrubbers? It’s like my nose just quit working, but I can still breathe.”

“Really buff,” I clarified. “I’m not sure how many food and personal odors are going to be at the main event, so I erred on the side of overkill.”

“Do all the quiet rooms look like this?” Antoine asked, his tone full of curiosity.

“They do not,” I grinned. “Antoine, you’re going to love this, I think.  There are five different themed quiet rooms, and two of each for a total of ten. You two are in one of the Dark Rooms.  The Green themed rooms are furnished with plants and small fountains.  Medium theme looks more like my quarters, with lighter grays and some purples thrown in. Cool theme is mostly blues, with diffuse light to give an underwater or polar night kind of feeling.  Finally, the Light themed room is whites and pale yellows, with indirect light to create a feeling like a sunny day.”

A hum of approval. “I think that makes the most sense,” he agreed. “Not everyone finds the same things soothing, but I think you created enough variety to cover everyone.”

“So, how is the event going for you guys?”

Tyche sighed. “It’s going okay, but I’m not entirely certain that’s not because of who I am.  I haven’t seen any flashing lights, no loud music is playing, so that’s good.  The vendors have been very deferential, which I didn’t think to expect, honestly.”

“I don’t think that’s because of you,” I hummed. “Derek is having a similar experience, honestly.  Sam has reported some vendors with fragrant stalls, but that’s been addressed.  Alistair, anything else?”

Without glancing up from his data screen, he shook his head. “Other than the incident with the smells, nothing negative reporting yet. Derek and Zachary have dutifully sent in additional reports regarding the reactions of each vendor to the food preference lists, so far the balance is in the positive. Samuel and Maverick are reporting similar responses.”

“And the upgrades?” Antoine asked hesitantly.

“So far, nothing major…” Alistair trailed off.  “Support personnel are reporting receiving proximity alerts from non-clients, and I’ve received several queries regarding if that is normal?”

“It’s expected,” Antoine sighed. “We are working on an algorithm that would reduce the alert volume for support personnel who are on duty and in the presence of their respective clients, but it wasn’t ready in time for this event.  But, yes, it is normal and to be expected.”

“Understood. Request approval to release a mass communication to all registered support personnel?”

“Approved,” Antoine and I answered immediately.  I continued. “Alistair, do we have any reports regarding the effectiveness of the dampeners?”

“Yes and no,” he stated. “General reports indicate conditions that are difficult to separate from the intended atmosphere of the event.”

“Tyche, are you still on Level Fourteen?”

“Yeah, why?”

“If we send you the reports from any participants in that area, do you have time to corroborate?”

“I mean, I do, but I thought I was supposed to be participating?”

“Sorry,” I winced in contrition. “You’re right. I just… got ahead of myself. Yeah, it can wait until after your shift at the event.  Just make sure you’re recording your observations so you can do an accurate comparison later, okay?”

“We’re both recording full video, Soph,” she assured me, a rustling noise in the background. “I’m about to head back out into it, but I promise to keep my eyes peeled.  I’ll keep shooting reports to you as I make my way through the vendors, okay?”

“Sounds good,” I exhaled, leaning back in my seat as she disconnected.  Watching the map for a few more minutes, I saw all three teams circulating through the event.  Sometimes a team would stop at a Quiet Room for several minutes before continuing.  Small reports were trickling in, some from the three teams, some from vendors, and others from support people who were simply attending the event in a professional capacity.  However, no further urgent matters were reported aside from Derek and Sam finding a handful of new foods each.

Finally, we were approaching the end of the low-stim session.

“Alpha Shift teams, relief teams for Beta Shift are on their way,” I notified them once we were fifteen minutes out from the end. “Beta Shift teams, please report when you are online.”

“Amelie Marechal, Crowd Control, reporting online and heading to rendezvous with Derek and Zach,” a cheerful voice chirped not two minutes later. I managed to smother a chuckle as Alistair scowled at me, remembering our conversation the day before.

“Coffee Williams, Crowd Control, reporting online and arriving to relieve Costa and Reid” came the next, this time a smooth baritone.  I hadn’t spent much time around the man, but Antoine assured me that he was perfect for diffusing difficult situations.

“Ivan Thorson, Crowd Control, online,” followed quickly after.  “Heading to meet with Amelie and relieve Tyche and Antoine.”

The next two Beta Shift members left me speechless. “Conor MacMaoilir, Crowd Control, online and relieving Maverick and Sam.”

“Grey Hodenson, Crowd Control Command, online. I’m with Conor and we are relieving Okima and Richardson.”

Alistair managed to sneak in a couple surprises of his own, apparently.  When I glared at him, he merely smirked at me before tipping a non-existent hat towards me.  I barely caught Mr. William’s teammate checking in before I managed to recover. “Sophia Reid, Alpha Shift Resource Command, reporting for hand off to Crowd Control Command. Grey, confirm handoff?”

“Handoff complete, Sophia,” came the familiar, neutral voice. Finally, they cracked and I could hear a smile in their next words. “Please take care to get some rest between now and Delta shift.  We expect that shift to be crowded, and you will be Resource Observation. Also, I would like to request that you do not allow Xiomara to kill Simon?”

“Hey, that’s a tall order!” I objected, only half-joking. “I’ll try, no promises. And I promise to get some rest.  First, I need Alpha shift teams to come debrief in my office, then I’ll take a rest interval for Gamma.  Deal?”

“Mr. MacMaoilir and I agree that is sufficient.”

“Maverick, make sure she gets some sleep, or I’ll let Tyche give you what for,” Conor interjected. I didn’t even try to suppress the groan that followed.

Introducing the two of them had turned out to be a terrible idea on my part.

The Cool & SRS Music Sharing Collective.

WUSB always had a history of dee-jays finding new music off each other. This was and always will be no issue. Thanks to Alice of Nightmare Aquarium, I’d never know who Ariel Pink or William Onyeabor were, and quadruple that for Black Marble, an act that’s become one of my best discoveries of the decade. Others had always asked me for playlists and “that one song I played fifteen minutes before the end of my show”. Our lives are a little more tolerable thanks to our station.

Shaerie, our dee-jay and resident astrologist, decided to create a secret group to post finds for only us to listen to. The Cool & SRS Music Sharing Collective was established in August 2016. She bestowed our dee-jay Conor (Headless Elvis) the title of admin- and the two started letting their closest friends and station volunteers in. “If there’s shitty music in this group, I will delete the fuck out of it”, she declared. Their first order of business? PWR BTTM’s “New Hampshire”. That was back when everyone and their cat loved them, until they were outed as sexual predators and then became shitty. We’ve yet to delete the fuck out of them, hmmm?

A month later, I was in. The SRS (“serious”) collective took off and we posted on a near-endless basis that almost everyone at one point had some catching up to do. Shaerie and Conor shared many a Bandcamp and d.i.y. find. They provided our daily allowance of acts in Downtown Boys, Ty Segall, Slowthai, Slothrust, Kal Marks, wosX, Car Seat Headrest, Saint Pepsi, Really Big Pinecone, and more. Cornflower posted some Argentinian musicks; and many others pitched the obvious, the classics, and some obscure finds in Brian Eno, Neu, Velvet Underground, The Fall, Richard Hell, Bush Tetras, Suicide, old-school hip-hop, alternative, shoegaze, and other nutritious pieces of good music. Other posts of theirs in Future Islands, Rolling Blackouts C.F., Speedy Ortiz, Idles, Snail Mail, Algiers, and Fidlar were ones my show Omega WUSB already played beforehand. They had our phases of Mac DeMarco and Frankie Cosmos worship. Did you know she was Phoebe Cates’ daughter? Shocked the shit out of me.

Some things dropped off on SRS became essential not only for Omega WUSB but for me personally. Conor’s why I’ve played Cende, Marijuana Deathsquads, Machine Girl, and Ghost Spell, and why I’m now a huge fan of Water From Your Eyes / Rachel Brown. He’s also the one responsible for me discovering Post Trash which helped influenced my show’s format and made me find the beauty of d.i.y. music. You can thank our friend Toasty for Palm’s “Dog Milk” that became part of a personal soundtrack to a wildly surreal summer.

Sharing is caring collecting, so I spread the wealth, too. I posted anything you could think of in hopes of resonating with our own. Most of the time it hit. Other times I struck out. Who was the only one who came though if others didn’t half the time? Spooky Christmas, the other (female) dee-jay who cares about sample culture as much as I do. Hooded Fang and Javelin were two which people jumped on board. Conor saw my post for Unstoppable Death Machines and he was floored: the billboard shown on Know Tomorrow was a real one very familiar for those driving west on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and he was a fan of theirs.

We didn’t just post music, we posted current events, too. Our staff were (and still are) very into the meat of the city scene. They were sad to see Shea Stadium close down for good. That’s the venue, not the former home of the New York Mets but that’s been gone. Citi Field should also close down, too. (Go Yankees!) As Shaerie left, Conor took over and gave SRS an important edge. Leave it up to him to post pieces from the Washington City Paper, where Priest’s Katie Alice Grier questioned how safe safe-spaces really were; or from the Creative Independent about Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale living in, owning, and being evicted from d.i.y. venues. See where our mindset is?

Even there were a few moments that I found my fellow staffers’ actions (besides posting PWR BTTM) questionable and grounds for expulsion from the SRS and the station. Toto’s “Africa” but with vocals one step out of key and off-beat. Marcus Mixx’ “My Oui Oui (New York)” for fuck’s sake. Smashmouth’s “Allstar” but every word is “somebody”. Yeah, somebody should’ve deserved a caning for that one. Mac Sabbath? Really? Thank Based God we didn’t post Okilly Dokilly, either.

But, they redeemed themselves when they really hit a few out of the park. Conor’s bandmate Jasko found Black Merda’s self-titled album. I thought I was the only one who knew of them. Cornflower found The Avalanches’ “Since I Met You”, which solved a mystery of what that song was I recorded on cassette 15 years ago. Conor once again wowed me when he posted Pigs’ You Ruin Everything (Unsane-related), because again, I had that all to myself. Kleenex’ “Nice”, Elite Gymnastics, Thee Oh Sees, and Death’s “Politicians In My Eyes” were other finds from our staffers which Omega WUSB played beforehand.

If not for Shaerie and Conor, I wouldn’t have a read on where some of the best dee-jays and selectors stood and what we’re all about. Some of what they posted for all to see was what I essentially wanted. What I wanted, like everyone else, was a connection with ourselves and the music. And I got it all in spades and diamonds. Thanks to everyone involved, I wouldn’t have summer memories, a newfound appreciation for the local / city scene, or the feelings I get for hearing specific sounds, vibes, ideas, and projections from certain artists. These are feelings I want and what they come with is a vision that makes me see and imagine things others don’t. As an aside, it was great to see what we’d come up with and how excited we were when we got it. It was a joker’s-wild goin’ on and we didn’t know what the fuck would happen.

For anyone keeping score, here’s what we took with us and what we gave back. Now it’s yours. It’s been a ride. SRS took off and ran well for a year-and-a-half. It slowed to a halt when everyone moved on and activity dwindled down. With six months of no activity at last year’s end (and a couple of autopsy posts after the fact just to see if anyone still cared), I finally gave SRS a proper eulogy. It’s sad that it came to an end. Hopefully, it will come back as a hologram one day.

Destiny’s Path – John Williams

It has been several days since your captor brought you to this apartment and threw you into this godforsaken bedroom. Every second you spend locked away between these four walls is agony, as you know your death awaits you at any moment. But why is he taking so long to kill you? You have prayed several times that he would just get it over with. At least then, you would have peace.

You also frequently worry about your family, especially Jin and… Jungkook. It is painful just to think about them, and wonder what they are tied up in to have trouble with hardened criminals like your captor.

With so much time on your hands and nothing to do, you get lost in your thoughts. You have all kinds of theories created, but none of them seem plausible. Your kind brother Jin, a gangster? The thought was so absurd. But when you think about the fact that you are being held captive, nothing could be too absurd.

Your thoughts are interrupted when you hear a shuffle at the door and then a knock. Your captor unlocks the door and peers in at you for the briefest moment before leaving a plate of food and disappearing. He is awfully strange in that he only brings you meals at night. Actually, it is the only time you see him at all. He never speaks, never stays too long, just leaves the food and goes. But you feel lucky that he brings you any meals at all. In fact, his behavior seems too… kind for a kidnapper. Each morning you awake to find something new in the room, like a fresh pair of clothes, or a clean towel. This last morning you woke to find… a single white rose lying next to you. Maybe he just feels guilty for holding you captive? Whatever his rationale is, you don’t care. You just want to get out of there and go back home.

You eventually find yourself drifting to sleep, and dreaming about that beautiful place called home. Oh, how you miss it. The dream seems too real as you look around at the scenery. The fields look just as you last saw them before you left with Jin. It even starts to smell like home, scents of wood and earth gently rocking you like a lullaby. But your instincts send a chill up your spine, and you suddenly know you are not alone. Panic immediately awakes you, and you see a figure standing over your bed in the dark.

He switches the lamp on next to you, illuminating the room with a warm glow. Shock runs through your body as you register his face, his eyes are a deep red just as they had been in your dream. But his features are much softer, less predatory. For the first time, you do not feel that he has come to harm you.

“Why didn’t you eat your dinner? Are you not pleased with it?” he asks, his voice raised as if slightly irritated.

Too alarmed to speak, you inch away toward the headboard, curling yourself up in protection.

“Look at me,” he demands, moving toward you, his body seeming as light as air.

You flinch at his voice, knowing you have no option but to obey. You peer up at him, looking into his crimson eyes once again. You see his mouth is set in a hard line and his hands are curled into fists. He seems utterly frustrated, ready to snap. As you glance back into his eyes, you notice a softness creeping into them. His muscles relax, letting his frown and creased eyebrows fall away. The lines in his face are gone, and he suddenly looks like a young boy, soft and naïve. Your body relaxes as well, allowing you to breathe normally and hold yourself steady.

“Why do you care if I eat?” you snap, suddenly feeling brave at the sight of his boyish expression, “Can’t you just kill me already?”

Hurt is the first thing that crosses his face, but you barely catch it before he’s fuming again, grabbing you by the waist before storming across the room. You scream and hit him as you realize he’s heading to the window. He slides it open and holds you by your torso, pushing your upper body out the window, angled down to see the street below.

“Is this what you want?” he hisses, dangling you with ease.

“No, please God,” you cry, tears starting to spill down your face. It is windy and dark outside as you look below to the streets, awaiting your inevitable death. Now is the time, you think. Maybe he wanted to keep you waiting, just to torture you before he pulls the plug.

He pulls you back in almost immediately before pulling your body against his into… a hug?

“Please don’t ask me to kill you,” he sighs, “I don’t want to hurt you.”

You’re too shocked to react so you just stay there, limp in his arms. His body is surprisingly warm, despite his cool appearance. Beneath his soft skin, his muscles are strong and sinewy, pulling you against him tightly. His breath exhales just near your face and you feel chills run up your spine. He doesn’t smell quite right... In fact, he doesn’t feel all that normal either. You freeze as you realize you’ve had your head up against his chest this whole time, but you can’t hear, nor feel a pulse in his chest?

He pulls away before shutting the window and crossing the room.

“Please eat your food, Y/N,” he says simply before walking out the door, leaving you stunned.

“But Master, it’s been days and there hasn’t been any word from him,” Hoseok complains, slamming his hands against the desk.

A heavy silence fills the room as Jimin cringes, knowing Hoseok’s behavior will only upset Namjoon.

Namjoon spins his chair around slowly, his eyes closed and his hands intertwined in front of him.

“Hoseok, I would appreciate if you got your hands off my desk, and your nose out of my business,” he snaps, opening his eyes to glare Hoseok down.

“I apologize for my behavior, Master,” Hoseok says, humbly bowing to the floor in front of the desk.

Namjoon sighs before continuing, “Do not worry about Yoongi’s loyalty… He may be having difficulty with this mission, but I know he will complete what he was asked. I will make sure of it.”

Jimin gulps, knowing exactly what Yoongi was asked of. And exactly what would happen to Yoongi if he couldn’t carry it out…
