I live for that specific feeling of seeing something scary that I barely remember from ochem in the ochem mcat book and having it immediately followed up by “this is beyond the scope of the MCAT so we’re not going to get into it”.

2024.07.19 | Another day of thesis + MCAT work
Hello! I’m still working away at my MCAT studies but I got confirmation this morning that I was accepted for a poster presentation at a big immunization conference so I’m excited about that!
Recently I’ve been trying to do about an hour of thesis work a day and otherwise focusing on MCAT. Today I’m trying to work mainly on OChem and specifically the reactions I need to know. I know it’s not the highest yield topic so I may switch up if I find I’m not getting anywhere with it.
Hope you’re all doing well and staying productive!

ellie, please share your tips on learning biology.
haha i’m so stoked by this ask bc i used to DREAM of having a studyblr account when i was in college 🤣 i’ll try to give sort of unconventional tips that helped me study
tbh practice practice practice was most helpful for any calculus, biochem (at least for rxn & pathway diagrams), physics or ochem that i had to take, but not so much for bio since it’s mostly memorization (but it depends on the professor/class i guess)
1. use anki/quizlet & incorporate it into your morning routine (ex 20 flashcards while eating breakfast)
2. have your friends quiz you. make it funn like if you don’t answer correctly within 30 secs they get to hit you with a pillow or you have to take a shot of something gross
3. repetition is key for memorization, most importantly spaced repetition! studying the night before for a bio test is academic suicide and WILL make you want to dropout lmfaooo
4. for bio, i think the kaplan mcat prep book is decent and summarizes most of the systems of the body pretty well. even if you’re not planning on taking the mcat, it’s handy to have
5. to prep for any frq type exams, just read a lecture, write down headers for topics onto a sheet of paper, then immediately after reading it just try to write down everything you can remember for that topic within like a minute.
6. draw diagrams!! this was so useful when learning ab diff systems like circulatory, respiratory etc. just draw a gigantic diagram, and annotate the actual diagram w your notes. that way your brain ties the visual to the words, and it all becomes easier to picture in your head when you’re taking your exam
7. with any study tip/strategy, i think its important to include a component of “stress” or “stakes” to mimic the exam environment, whether that be some sort of light punishment, time constraint, resource constraint etc so that on actual test day, you’ve sort of primed yourself into feeling comfortable with the material despite your anxiety, which can really help give you an advantage
8. if you don’t feel like studying, set a two min timer and start. most of the time, you’ll keep going even after those two mins are up
9. convince yourself you’re in love w someone in your lecture hall so you wanna go to class
sorry this was more generic tips rather than bio-specific but i think these tips work BEST for any type of memorization subject such as bio
okay back to jjk brainrot

mcat registration is only open for certain months (4 days out of the months?) so plan the registration times! you can see them on the AAMC website. i’m from CA but i had to travel out of state to take the exam 😭😭
i definitely agree you should take the mcat after you finish your physic/ chem series! there’s also ochem, biochem, bio, psych, and soc in the test
since i’m applying this upcoming cycle, i took it in january. depending on my score, i’ll retake in april/ may. taking it in may will mean i send in my scores blindly.
they open up registration from january - june/ july-september. if you want more chances to take the test, you can definitely start earlier! there’s a 3 limit cap per year, and a 7 limit cap in general
here are the reddit links!
study guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mcat/comments/92ndgx/my_review_sheets/
anki deck: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mcat/comments/cckw41/my_anki_deck/
how to use/ study anki if you’ve never used it before: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mcat/comments/q8k7k0/how_to_study_miles_down_anki/
equation sheet: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mcat/comments/7vs9dq/equations_sheet/
anki is good for content review but you have to understand the concepts pretty well before using it. otherwise you’re just guessing and not learning as efficiently (at least for me)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING, I NEEDED THIS SO MUCH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Mitigation
Two articles ago, I illustrated how every area of my life was ass. In this article, I will list what I'm actually going to do about it.
First, I forgot to mention a big issue in my life, that my research at my full-time job is going so slowly that my boss is showing mild frustration. I haven't made enough time for it between picking up two classes and spinning the plates of my business, fitness, jiu jitsu, art comissions, my weekend EMT job, my MCAT studying, and more. But it's my damn job, so I better get with it. I did just resign from the weekend EMT job, so that is a partial mitigation.
Anyway, mitigation plan list. What I'm going to do is brainstorm a bunch of options for I can do. And then I'm going to pick what I will actually do.
I make the least money I've ever made. I can build my business. I can take that (secret-ish) contract that is coming up and try to knock it out of the park. I can sell my body (just kidding, I'm too much of a germaphobe for that).
I am 6 figures in debt of various types. I can solve this by addressing the previous bullet point. An option is to file for bankruptcy, but we're not doing that.
I'm the shortest, weakest guy at my jiu jitsu gym. I can hit the gym more frequently and for longer stints each time.
For my research/full-time job, I can make time for that. I can wake up at 5am and do that instead of fucking around on my phone and doom scrolling through Reddit. Part of my frustration is that I may wake up at 5:30 but not get into work until 9am between hour-long traffic and ironing my shirt and prepping breakfast, yadda yadda. This sucks especially on Tuesday/Thursdays, when my in-person Ochem class eats up 3 hours of my afternoon. I am capable of mitigating this.
I have fumbled all of my intimate relationships. This one is tough to mitigate with one or a few things. I am getting better at it though. This is a whole other conversation.
I live with my parents again. My Jeep is already setup for car camping. I could do a hybrid week where I'm near my job during the week and at my parents' on weekends. The tougher option would be to make so much money off of my business or another job that I could afford rent.
I am bald as fuck. I have been trying minoxidil with some success. I got lazy and stopped microneedling, which cost me some progress. (Yes, microneedling is scientifically supported. Ask me with my biology and almost-neuroscience degrees lol. The biochemistry behind it is reasonable [sulfotransferase, etc.] and supported in the literature.) The mitigation here would be to consistently use minoxidil and microneedling daily.
I am still pretty chubby despite working out nearly every day. The mitigation is to eat less. Clearly, I'm eating extra. I already do keto, but it has been lazy keto for the past year, and my face has gotten a little pudgy because of it lmao.
My GPA is too low for medical school. I can mitigate this with a perfect MCAT. I can apply only to schools that look at the last 60 credits. I can ask for independent review on my applications. I can make connections with adcoms through my job and apply to their schools. I can make so many quality publications that there is little room for doubt about my scientific capabilities. I could go to a Caribbean or Canadian med school.
My business has only made a few hundred in revenue. I could actually spend more time on it instead of putting time on my calendar and then not actually working on my business. My website sucks. My products suck. The articles are good, but they're slow to publish. I am being slow at all of it. I can just put out more content and products. I know what to do.
I'm already behind in Ochem 1. I can study more. Like the last bullet point, all I need to do is put in the time.
I was born without a dingaling, which makes physical relationships especially hard, on top of my goofy-ass social skills and tendency towards codependence. This one will be tough to mitigate as well, because bottom surgeries tend to be booked 2-3 years out for any surgeon worth their credentials. Will have to look more into this one for concrete steps.

mcat studying day 1
goals for today:
-Psychology Pankow Anki Deck for 2 hours
-Chemistry Milesdown Anki Deck for 2 hours
-P/S Khan Academy Videos for an hour before I sleep
-Notes: I am getting back into MCAT studying after a while and I'm starting this blog as a log of what I'm studying. I want to start with these subjects because I know that Chemistry is in the first section of the MCAT and I know P/S might be a little easier than the other sections to study, especially for me because I enjoy Psychology. Sociology is ehh, but not too hard imo. I also need to increase my concentration and focus, because I've been doomscrolling a bit. I plan on taking a practice test soon as well.
what I got done:
-I went to my favorite cafe (w tons of outlets!), got a matcha with a shot of espresso (elite combo) and loaded up my Anki
-To stay on track, I used the Pomodoro method, using this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxIbwamsruc
5/10, didn't really enjoy the music but it got the job done.
-I went over new cards and with these cloze style decks, deleted words that might be making recall too easy. I wanted to feel that I was actually pulling stuff from my brain and not just recognizing cards, which can be an issue with cloze style.
Studying Breakdown:
-Block 1 (50 minutes): MrPankow6A Deck. 61 new cards. This is my least favorite Psych section tbh, I don't really care for visual or auditory processing.
-Break (10 minutes): edited my tumblr :D
-Block 2 (50 minutes): MrPankow6A Deck. Reviewed old cards from Block 1. 45 New Cards done!
-Long Break: went to the grocery store and then home to make some dinner and watch Gilmore Girls :D
-I didn't end up doing Chem today :( Lost track of time and had schoolwork to do, but this is Day 1 and I'm trying to get an Anki routine down!
-Notes for future: For bio, I want to watch the Professor Eman videos and then do a deck, either from Milesdown or JackSparrow. I'll do the Jack Sparrow Biochem deck for sure. Milesdown for Physics and Ochem. I also need to keep my phone away cuz I do get distracted from time to time :(

OWO WHAT’S THIS? 2 days in a row of me posting? I did these notes to relearn a bit of Orgo and to test out taking notes with GoodNotes instead of OneNote.

Polarization of the Carbonyl Group
-- Carbonyl group:
Tumblr media
-- The oxygen has two lone pairs
Tumblr media
-- The oxygen is more electronegative than the carbon
-- The polarization arrow will show electrons being pulled toward the oxygen
Tumblr media
-- The carbon is partially positive
-- Partially positive = δ+
-- The oxygen is partially negative
-- Partially negative = δ-
-- These symbols go by the arrow
Tumblr media
-- The polarization makes the boiling points of aldehydes and ketones higher than hydrocarbons
-- The larger the carbonyl group, the less soluble it is in water
-- If it has more than six carbons, it is insoluble
