Is it just me, or is the way WoF presents disability... actually not that bad? Don't get me wrong, it is FAR from perfect, and I would love to see better representation as the series continues! However, I'll make my case:

I think the thing people criticize the most is when Turtle mentions that he and Anemone were working on a spell to restore Starflight and Tamarin's sight. This is definitely alarming; it plays into the tired idea of disabled people needing to be "fixed." But I think people forget that Turtle and Anemone are two young children with a limited view on the world. Their mother is extremely judgemental and believes in genetic superiority 😭 They might not understand that there is nothing wrong with being disabled, and that you can happily live with a disability. We also don't know if Tamarin or Starflight even consented to the spell, so it may have never been realized anyways. I would like to see Tui properly address this in future books, though. (And if it wasn't clear, I'm not justifying Turtle and Anemone's actions; just saying that there's context here that most people don't consider).

I'm also aware that the series villainizes some of its disabled characters (Queen Scarlet, Chameleon, Queen Battlewinner, etc.) Disabled people have a long history of being villainized, so it is understandable to feel uncomfortable about this! But it's not like WoF lacks ANY positive representation. Tau, Clay, Tamarin, and Starflight are all characters who I think are really cool!! And I like Mayfly and Osprey too (even though they're minor characters). I think even Peril could count...? And a lot of her character arc is about learning to live with her firescales.

And yes, there's stuff like The Weirdling Tower... but that is EXPLICITLY treated as a bad and gross thing, so I don't get why some people use that as proof that Tui hates disabled people. Same goes for ableist characters like Burn and Scarlet (who are also EXPLICITLY presented as horrible and evil).

My biggest criticism for the way Tui writes disability is that most of her disabled characters that are considered positive representation don't play a huge role in the books. We have Starflight and Clay, but when they get their disabilities, the arc that focuses on them is close to over. It would be nice to see more disabled characters that are more involved in the story.

Your blog helped me get over my fear of bugs...it makes me sad thinking about their short lifespans...are there any bugs that live really long? I mean really long in bug standards. Or is that just the curse of being a little guy...

plenty of arthropods live a very long time. centipedes and some scorpions can live 10-15 years, and some female trapdoor spiders and tarantulas can live 20-30 years. the oldest spider recorded was a 43-year-old Australian trapdoor. some insects have very long juvenile lifespans, like the mayflies known for their short adult lifespans, or the famous 13 or 17-year Magicicada, while others like queen ants and termites can also live for quite a long time, generally outliving many generations of their own young. even some springtails and mites, animals less than a millimeter long, can have multi-year lifespans. it’s mainly insect species with lives deeply tied to seasons that live and die so quickly.

Long rant so be warned

I remember starting The Cruel Prince after seeing a Tik Tok compilation on YouTube. I thought it would be a nice series to get into as I was entering my junior year of highschool. I left the series absolutely loving it and relating so much to Jude.

I made a post about the mischaracterization of Jude Duarte and how it annoys me because when you see a character you can relate to, wouldn't you be annoyed that people reduce them to a single trait or quality?

Out of her older siblings, Jude is the youngest (Taryn is the older twin). I too am the youngest of my siblings so it's nice to read a book about a fellow younger sister. You see, I never had my parents killed by my mom's former husband and then taken to land filled with faeries and proceeded to get bullied when I got older but yeah, I still relate to Jude and the thing that I relate to her is that she's human and her relationship with her adoptive father, Madoc.

In this series, we're shown that being a human is both a strength and a weakness. Many faeries hate humans and will find ways to use them if a human is in Elfhame. They can be servants, nurses, lovers, entertainment, etc. From a young age, Jude knew that she would never be like the Folk and how she'll always be a human. But her mortality doesn't stop her from changing the game.

"You are nothing. You barely exist at all. Your only purpose is to create more of your kind before you die." Said by Valerian. "He's wrong about me. I am going to make my mayfly life count for something. I won't be afraid of him or of Prince Dain's censure. If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse."

Her ability to lie is a great asset for navigating Elfhame as faeries themselves cannot lie. She enters the system of politics after her attempt to be a knight went wrong. To survive in Elfhame, she needed to become "worse" than the Folk but as a human, she technically already did. In their eyes, humans are beneath them. Their lives are short and the supposed purpose they have is to create more before dying. Humans are disgusting, low-life, and in a way, worse than the Folk.

But do faeries of Elfhame know what humans have accomplished in their short lives? Through mortal hands, empires and kingdoms rose and through mortal hands have they fallen. Humans commit heinous acts towards each other and some of these acts could even make the Folk disgusted. All humans are capable of being bad but when you have a life like Jude's, it's only a matter of time before you have to dig that out of you and wield it like a weapon or wear it like an armor.

Through Jude's mortal hands, she became the first mortal High Queen of Elfhame and in the end, the land accepted her as their queen. Even though she is queen, she doesn't let herself be too vulnerable (said to us by Oak in The Prisoner's Throne).

Her relationship with Madoc reminds me of my own relationship with my dad. Jude acts similar to Madoc and I've been told that I act just like my dad and that I even look like him. When Jude was still a kid, Madoc acted like a somewhat normal dad as he would give her hugs and kisses on the forehead. My dad would do the same and give me piggyback rides around the house. But as Jude got older, their relationship got strained. My relationship with my dad got strained as well but it wasn't too bad, just that we could get on each other's nerves a lot.

Now, my dad and I have a good relationship as I'm getting older and he's getting older too. In the end, Jude will always love Madoc even though a part of her hates herself for that.

Jude and Taryn's relationship reminds me of me and my sister. My sister hasn't betrayed me but she has told me rude, vile things and made fun of things that I have struggled with before in the past. Like when she gets mad, she'll sometimes take it out on me and I'm thinking what the fuck did I do? We can go from sharing some laughs to hating each other. Taryn has betrayed Jude twice and left her heart broken but in the end, they forgave each other. See if I was Jude, it would be a while before I forgave Taryn. I would rather have Taryn as a sister than my own, she sucks.

Shout out to the people who got a shitty relationship with their sister🫶🏾.

Jude will always be a special character to me because she's human and stays human. When I realized that I could relate to her character, I felt a sense of pride in myself. She always tries to be strong even when she's in a moment of weakness and honestly, that inspires the fuck out of me. If I'm ever in a really tough situation, I think "What would Jude Duarte do?". To anyone who also relates to Jude, you're awesome and the best and stay amazing! Keep that head and that crown held up high 👑💜.

My steps down the stairs left a trail of blood behind them. I stopped at the base of the stairs, meeting the eyes of my new allies. There was approval in Empress Sucsu'anane's nod, delight in the shifter delegation, and… Horror? Fear? Amongst the elves.

Saivere, the same elf who had been ever so pleasant towards me, stepped forth. “What in Solaria's name have you done? That…” He shook his head violently. “That was wrong. Do you not understand the meaning of the word?”

Empress Sucsu'anane laughed at him. “Young Nari-ilra, do not be rude. All reigns end and begin with bloodshed, even yours. Why should she try to hide it under a veneer of civility? Honesty is a valuable trait,” she told him.

Saivere squared himself resolutely. “This is inhumane,” he insisted. “We just watched an innocent man be tortured to death. I will not stand by and watch this travesty, and if you had any sense, you would not either.”

Like a kindergarten descending into chaos, the people before me divided into two camps. Overlapping voices argued with each other, clamouring and demanding to be listened to. All for little old me! It was absolutely delightful.

When I had grown bored of the fuss, I raised my knife and tapped it on the metal railing. The resulting clang resounded through the hall, silencing the crowd as it went. 

“Now,” I said, into the void of suits. “If you are done bickering like little children, I have a thing or two I'd like to say.” 

Crossing my hands behind my back as straightening up to my full height, I continued, “It has been brought to my attention that we are having a certain… overcrowding issue. We, as immortals and long-lived species, are running out of living space, living space that we deserve. Now, who has been taking that space?”

I paused, and the shifters piped up. “The humans,” they cried, joined in belatedly by the spirits and my ghouls.

“Exactly,” I replied, nodding. “The mortal mayflies. Irritating, multiplying, and absolutely everywhere! Even the spirit-tongue recognises them as Kina-ilra, the everywhere people. Bad enough that they pop up all over the place, but that they are driving us out of our lands? That they are moving into our cities and taking up jobs that belong to our people and coming up with new technologies? That they have forgotten their place?”

Saivere's face fell. “Have you forgotten your past? You were a human once too,” he cried.

“Don't hold it against me,” I quipped, grinning at him. Yes, the flow of the crowd was turning against him. I could feel its heartbeat, the crashing waves of murmurs. “I'm trying to put those days behind me.”

Saivere opened his mouth to rebut me, and I hushed him again. The creases of anger and worry on his forehead gave me another idea. I took a mocking bow towards him. “You know, ladies, gentlemen, and eternal abominations, we all have one thing in common. Can anybody tell me what it is?”

From the crowd, someone piped up. “We're all inhuman?”

“Do you hear that? That's human centric language right there.” The rhetoric of Queendom was coming to me. “We need to stop that. Tell me, what unites us?  We're all Ilre, Kitzche, immortals! That's what defines us, not that we aren't forsaken mayflies.”

“But the elves aren't immortal,” another member of the elven delegation shouted. There was a distinct aura of gotcha from him. Oh, we were going to see who had gotten who soon enough. “We just happen to have long lifespans.”

I stepped forward, and the elves stepped back. “Exactly. Tell me, who taught the humans machinery? Who helped them with agriculture, encouraged democracy within their borders? Which non-immortal species is currently infringing on the Cescere spirit's lands?”

A dangerous hush descended upon them. I smiled even wider, grateful for my new face, for I could literally smile ear to ear now. “Tell me… Who is just as much to blame as any human?”

The answer came in a ripple, as much magic as any spell. The elves. The nari-ilra. The mortals. All of them. Every last one. Not a good one amongst them. Fingers sharpened to claws, weapons drawn. 

The elves never stood a chance.

I watched Saivere be shredded before my very eyes, letting his gore mingle with Tamaris'. I grasped his severed head and lifted it up. By the gods, if my sister could see me now. She would weep with horror and fear, to see what I had become. I revelled in the thought that I had become the very monster she so desperately sought to stop. That in the end, she was the powerless oracle, and I the great necromancer. That all her prophecies were not enough to prevent the fate I had so craved.

“Look at this,” I commanded. My people obeyed.

“This is a sign of our new regime,” I announced. My people listened.

“We will kill every human, and then we will rule atop their corpses!”

And my people cheered for me, their Lich-Queen.

Happy Birthday to the bubbly bonnie Ashley Jensen born in Annan on August 11th 1969.

Raised single handedly by her mother Margaret, Ashley knew from an early age she wanted to be an actress. She grew up glued to British sitcoms, especially Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em with Michael Crawford as Frank Spencer. And after her mum saved up for her to attend the National Youth Theatre in London, the 16-year-old returned home determined to pursue a career on the stage.

Ashley went on to study drama at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh before fulfilling her dream by landing roles treading the boards in London. From theatre she moved into TV, ealy roles included wee parts in City Lights and Rab C Nesbit , and a 1991 film called Tickets for the Zoo, which was set in my hometown Edinburgh, she the started racking up credits in popular dramas such as The Bill, Casualty, Clocking Off and EastEnders. It was her part as Ricky Gervais’ hapless sidekick in the popular Extras that was to be Ashley’s breakthrough role, though. As well as making her a household name in Britain it also gave her the opportunity to appear alongside Hollywood heavyweights such as Kate Winslet, Samuel L Jackson and Orlando Bloom, all of whom made guest appearances. The part also brought official recognition when she was named both best actress and best newcomer at the 2005 British Comedy awards - accolades which she celebrated in typical low-key fashion with a cod sandwich from a roadside chip van.

Ashley saw fame in the US follow playing the straight-talking Christina in the sitcom Ugly Betty, leading her to relocate to LA and renting a house in the Hollywood Hills. While the role was originally meant to be American, the casting agents fell in love with her Scottish accent and it stayed.

Ashley may be a star in the US now but her feet are firmly on the ground I found this quote from her “Even now I think I might never work again. I’m still a bit like that. I probably always will be, “This from one of her best friends who has a chippy in Annan speaks volumes "She has her head screwed on and won’t be changed by the star treatment.” Recalling a visit to her LA home soon after Ashley relocated, he says: “We were holding hands and jumping up and down. She was shouting, 'Can you believe it? What am I doing here?’.” Ashley’s acting career has seen in her in many shows, my faves include, Catastrophe with fellow Scot Mark Bonnar, Trust Me, with Jodie Whittaker, which was set in Edinburgh, and again with Ricky Gervais in Afterlife, as well as the comedy drama Agatha Raisin, where she plays the title role, a cotswolds-based PR guru turned amateur sleuth.

Tragedy struck for Ashley in 2017 when she discovered her husband, Terence Beesley body at the wheel of his car in the garage at their Somerset home. The couple, who met in 1999 while they were both involved in a London theatre production of King Lear, were married for ten years. A verdict of suicide was later ruled on at the coroners court.

As well as her work as an actress Ashley has narrated a couple of shows recently, Inside The Balmoral: Scotland's Finest Hotel, about the hotel that takes pride of place at number I Princes Street and The Airport: Back in the Skies about London Heathrow.

Ashley was last on our screens in the fantastic two part drama Mayflies, I am looking forward to seeing how she is in the new series of Shetland, taking over as the lead role after Dougie Henshall left.
