what i’m about to say about anderperry might be somewhat controversial

people talk a lot about neil and todd and their potential relationship—and don’t get me wrong i love them—and how things may have gone if they’d had more time. we all know this, we’ve all read the cute fanfics and headcanons and giggled and daydreamed about this perfect world of what could have been

but i think these actually tend to ignore the harsh reality known as historical context. it was 1959, they were at a christian, all-boys school, and things would NOT have been easy sailing for their relationship. I mean, I’m pretty sure homosexuality was still considered heresy or something at this point. If they were in a relationship, then it would have been tense, secretive, etc.

and IM GAY and like i know that gay people have obviously always been around, but i just seriously doubt that they’d be wearing each other’s clothes and holding hands in public. their relationship would probably have to be hidden. they likely wouldn’t be shouting it from the rooftops

i hate to say this but i’m not even sure that all of the other poets would be immediately supportive; this was still a time period of raging homophobia

and i adore them and want happiness for them and i understand that some people ignore these facts for the sake of their own sanity and self-preservation, but i think it’s important. if they chose to still be together, it would have been another major “carpe diem” and another way of going against conformity. i feel like ignoring the context is almost a form of mischaracterization. 

but these are of course fictional characters that we’re talking about, and people are allowed to imagine them however they see fit. i just wish there was more fan-made media talking about or including this perspective

trying Very Hard to be normal about neil perry today

Neil is a damn good liar

we see it a few times. the most noteable is when he tells Mr Keating that his father was gonna let him do the play, but another time that I think is important is when his father spawns in his room and Neil lies immediately

it’s kind of heartbreaking, really. his dad shows up, and Neil’s immediate reaction is to lie. he withheld the truth from his father and got caught, so the only way he could explain himself was to try and tell a lie. it’s literally the first thing he does. he says “I was gonna surprise you” even though he knew damn well he was hoping his father wouldn’t figure out he was doing the play. Neil is good at lying on his feet. he does it right here: now maybe he had that excuse planned out for in case Mr Perry did find out, but he obviously wasn’t expecting it, you can see it in his face when he first walks into the room and Mr Perry is there. so either he had a lie planned—which is a whole other thing that nobody should have to do, especially with their parents—or he was able to come up with a relatively believable lie on the spot. in my opinion it’s the latter, bc I feel like he grew up in a household where that skill is necessary in order to stay out of serious trouble.

in the scene where Neil is talking to Mr Keating, he lies and says that his father is letting him do the play. now he knows that if he says that his father is super excited then Mr Keating won’t believe him. so instead he backs it up with believable evidence, facts that are twisted to support what he is saying. at some point in his life, Mr Perry DID tell Neil to keep up his grades. Mr Perry is NOT happy with the fact that Neil is in the play. these are all facts that Neil says to make the lie—that Mr Perry is letting him do the play—more believable. this kinda shit comes from experience believe me. he has been having to lie his entire life for various reasons, whether it’s coming up with excuses for why he was out later than he should’ve been or why he didn’t do well on a test or why a vase is broken in the living room or anything in between, so that he doesn’t experience SEVERE consequences. he’s had to lie to his parents for so long that it’s practically a second nature, and nobody should have to deal with that.

in conclusion, Neil needs a hug.

dead boy detectives is a show whose shortcomings and strengths make total sense when you think of it as a comic on tv, ie terribly goofy expository dialogue that sounds way better when you picture it in comic book font with every other word bolded, panel-paced conversation as our heroes figure out something very obvious, fun enormous monster set pieces that used up all the cgi budget which is why all the rooftop shots look Like That, incredible snap zooms and smash cuts in montages that hit exactly like comic panels, and side characters with bland or brilliant characterization that seems to hinge on the metric of ‘how much cunt did the actor put into their line readings’
