Despite TAing intro physics for my entire undergrad, I have yet to encounter a single person who derives any value from Young And Freedman's University Physics. Many of the professors I taught under would outright tell their students not to bother opening it, and to just buy the separate license for "MasteringPhysics" for $40 a semester and return the utterly useless $300 book. I think it's just a captive market, these overpriced textbooks aren't good for anything, I certainly never referenced it when developing review problems for office hours.
Sometimes things are just scams run by corrupt rent-seekers.
if there's one thing ive learned from my math education it's the ability to judge a textbook by it's cover:
fancy cover with actual picture, fewer than 15 years old, $300: absolute dogshit. time wasting exercises, poor exposition, that weird gloss they put on the pages probably makes it too toxic to use as kindling
title is just name of subject, referred to by author, 50 years old with like 3 editions: excellent. compact proofs, exercises good enough people refer to them by number in conversation. available for free by foraging somewhere they grow naturally
title is some shit like paul's notes, "cover" is just default latex titlepage, distributed as pdf to grad classes or by advisor: best coverage of whatever (usually niche) topic it's about in the world. crystal clear exposition. solutions to exercises available by emailing grad students working under author

A 1.70 mol sample of an ideal diatomic gas at a pressure of 1.20 atm and temperature of 420 K undergoes a process in which its pressure increases linearly with temperature. The final temperature and pressure are 720 K and 1.83 atm .
a) Determine the change in internal energy. (Assume five active degrees of freedom.)
b) Determine the work done by the gas.
c) Determine the heat added to the gas.

Who the heck at Pearson decided that the hints will contain no useful information in solving the problem but the “correct answer!” message will?
Wow thanks, where was this video describing how to approach the problem an hour ago when I was stuck in the middle of the problem????

How I’m Studying From Home (Part Two!)
I officially finished my spring term and am now doing general physics during the summer term! Some things have changed, and some things have remained the same.
Still go to your zoom lectures when scheduled!
I know way too many people that slept in late last term and didn’t go to our 9AM ochem zoom lecture and were very lost as to what was important and what wasn’t for the test. Thankfully physics lecture is at 11am so I can sleep in more and still attend class on time. Also friendly zoom reminder, mute yourself if you’re not talking, and turn on your video when your professor allows you to so you can collaborate better!
Do prelecture assignments the day before.
I am truly awful at this and then spend 10am to 11am trying to watch the prelecture videos and answer prelecture questions. It sucks so much because I don’t get to truly understand anything as I’m just rushing through it, and I really do need to go back to doing it the day before like I did in the first week or else I feel like I’m going to continuously be stressed, lol.
Work with others on homework when you can!
For our MasteringPhysics homework, I worked together with one of my friends over zoom and having him be able to call me out on my tiny mistakes and vice versa was extremely helpful for me to understand the material. Plus the other day, I went to the ER with really bad stomach pains and my friends helped me out with the homework due that night knowing I wasn’t in a good state to do it alone.
Take breaks and eat lunch and snacks on time.
Students in general are prone to disordered eating habits as we often snack on the go or miss meals because of classes. Take advantage of the fact that classes come to you and make sure to eat at good times.
My current favorite study tool? Notion!
I’ll post about this soon but I really have been loving using notion for both my physics notes and my job training (contact tracing for COVID-19) notes. It’s a bit difficult to get used to at first, but there’s plenty of videos on Youtube you might find helpful to get you started!
Enjoy your other hobbies as well during this time. :D
For me, sometimes it’s been hard to separate work times from school times from hobby times when everything is from home. So I’ve been doing my work stuff and hobby stuff on the weekends and evenings and doing my school stuff in the mornings/afternoons.
My current hobby is making and selling art on Redbubble! Here’s the link to my shop, I’m hoping to make studyblr-related content soon but I’m not sure what y’all would like so feel free to leave a comment or DM me. :)
That’s all from me today: stay safe, stay healthy, and happy studying!

phys 7b 19.55
A 1.80 mol sample of an ideal monatomic gas, originally at a pressure of 1.60 atm , undergoes a three-step process: (1) it is expanded adiabatically from T1 = 597 K to T2 = 378 K ; (2) it is compressed at constant pressure until its temperature reaches T3; (3) it then returns to its original pressure and temperature by a constant-volume process.
a) Determine T3.
b) Calculate the change in internal energy for each process.
c) Calculate the work done by the gas for each process.
d) Calculate the heat added to the gas for each process.
e) Calculate the change in internal energy, the work done by the gas, and the heat added to the gas for the complete cycle.
