THE DESCRIPTION OF MARY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS Feast Day: May 24

The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated under the title of 'Help of Christians', because of her motherly protection, especially in times of danger and war.

In the Holy Gospel of John, Jesus entrusted the Church to the protection of Mary at the foot of the cross, when he said to John, who represented all Christians: 'This, is your Mother!'

In the Acts of the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, when the disciples gathered in the cenacle of Jerusalem with fear and trepidation, Mary was in their midst and to convey serenity and faith.

This Marian title was used for the first time in a homily by St. John Chrysostom in the year 345; and it is included in one of the oldest Marian prayers - Sub Tuum Praesidium, which is translated as 'Under Your Protection.'

As the Ottoman Turks were marching against Europe in 1571, Pope St. Pius V asked the faithful to invoked the Blessed Mother under the title of 'Mary, Help of Christians.'

The defeat of the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto on the 7th of October was attributed to her intercession, and the Pope inserted the title of 'Auxilium Christianorum' or 'Help of Christians' in the Litany of Loreto.

On May 24, 1814 to commemorate his return to Rome, Pope Pius VII instituted the liturgical feast of Mary, Help of Christians after six years of imprisonment at the hands of the anti-Christian emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte.

This Marian devotion was popularized by St. John Bosco, who built a great basilica in Turin, Italy in her honor, and founded, with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, a religious congregation under the title - The Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians (now called Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco).

I think it's hilarious that I give off Catholic vibes, specifically Catholic mom vibes (thank you @starsaroundsaturn for pointing this distinction out to me) And I think it's hilarious that every website seems to agree and gives me a ton of catholic things despite the fact that I'm protestant. I'm literally Baptist y'all.

Random thought but why do people feel the need to push their religion on to other people? Especially Muslims and Christians (This is coming from a Muslim with Christian family and friends before anyone gets upset)

Both religions encourage its respective followers to preach and spread the message but can we be serious for a second and not try to spread the word of God in every random situation?

Yesterday, I was at a team-building programme and the woman who was supposed to be teaching and mentoring us kept speaking about Jesus, her saviour. Now, I was the ONLY Muslim there and very much visibly Muslim considering I was wearing a thobe and hijab and it's like she didn't even stop to consider how I would feel about her essentially preaching that her religion is correct by saying that when Jesus comes down she'll be on the correct side of life.

Jesus in Islam and Jesus in Christianity are two VERY different people and regardless of which religion you deem to be the truth, can we please read the room and stop trying to convert people?

I was NOT interested in becoming Christian, I was NOT in the mood to listen to her talk about how she found God, I WAS interested in learning about team-building but that all disappeared when she couldn't go 5 minutes without giving a sermon.

Learn to read the room and respect the people in that room. Muslims shouldn't be preached at when they're trying to learn something irrelevant to religion and the same goes for Christians.

Today is the Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church.

Yet another random Mary thing, right? Very on-brand for the Catholic Church. But with the 12 Marian feasts that were already on the calendar (including another one on Wednesday) when this was added in 2018 – did we really need another one?

In a word, yes.

Here’s why it’s worth recalling Mary’s role as Mother of the Church. It has everything to do with Mary’s lived faith. A faith that shows us the standard for the Church at her best.

Not to mention you and me.

Which is? Being so grounded in God. Being so secure in who you are in God’s eyes, that you don’t need to worry about who you are in anyone else’s eyes.

But that security isn’t just for our own health and well-being.

God wants us to have that security, so that we have the abundance of heart that allows us to help others.

So that we can step back. Not just to make room for them to shine. But so that we can actively support them and lift them up.

Instead of needing to be the center of attention ourselves.

Because no matter what else God has called you and me to do, no matter what God has gifted us with the ability to do.

God is calling us to lift up other people. To help them become who He made them to be.

This is the charism of Mary, the Mother of the Church.

This is what we see time and again in the life of Mary, in her lived faith. Quiet but active support. Both subtle and strong. Easily overlooked, but impossible to do without.

Making it possible, time and again, for others to rise to the moment that God is calling them to.

Not by neglecting ourselves, or ignoring the good that God has called us to do.

But by understanding that part of being who God has made us to be, is helping others to be who God made them to be. It’s a “both-and.”

The only way we can do that? Is if we’re secure in who we are in God’s eyes. So that we can have the abundance of heart that allows us to step aside and help others.

That’s the security that we see time and again in Mary’s lived faith.

It’s the point of Mary being the Mother of the Church. And the reason that you and I need to pray,

“Lord, give me the heart of Mary today.

Make me so secure in who I am in You,

that I can use the gifts that You have given me to lift up someone else,

to help them become who You made them to be.”

Mother Mary

While I’m still gathering some research for quarter days and the Wheel Of the Year and how to reinterpet it into being Christopagan friendly, let’s talk about The Queen of Heaven and Holy Mother of God Herself, Mother Mary! (More under the cut!)

Mary was a surprisingly hard spirit to commune with when I first started(a week ago). This was mostly because I was so stubborn in my belief that God had to be one male being, that I completely missed the signs She was giving me. When I was reading bible verses during my time with Lady Sophia, I kept on going back to verses that mention Mary and God’s feminine and maternal side. I also kept on feeling a warm presence that would reassure me that everything would be alright. I kept on hearing songs in the wind encouraging me to keep on going whenever I felt low energy on my walks to my bus stop and hear a feminine whisper me a good night after I finish my nightly prayer to God. Even my research kept leading me back to Marian devotions and Mariology.  

Mother Mary embodies God’s role as the one who gives birth to the world, who creates, who gives birth to each and every living being in the world and looks over them, nurtures them, fosters them, cares for them, loves them. She is the Divine Mother who ascended into her place as Virgin Mother Of All through her miraculous conception of Jesus Christ and later being assumed (taken bodily) into Heaven. She is the mother that I can lean on and trust in before even my own parents and I love her for it.
