part 1: everything comes out teenage petulance

immediately after the whistle blows during a match, oikawa tooru’s expression changes. in the court, he’s known to be fierce, confident, and a skilled volleyball player; but once he steps outside of it, he’s just a boy.

a boy constantly wanting to be noticed by the girl he likes - you. he craves for your attention, your smile, your laugh, and your touch. since your first day as a freshman when he was a junior, the chemistry of his brain was changed, and it was only filled with you.

what can he do? he just wants you.

despite his popularity and charming personality, oikawa becomes a bumbling mess around you. he effortlessly turns down other girls with a smile, having the ability to leaving them giggling and kicking their feet after rejecting them. but when it comes to the girl of his dreams, he can’t even muster the courage to make a move or ask you out.

he often marvels at the miracle of your friendship, wondering how he manages to talk with you at all. in your presence, he feels both immense pressure and profound relief—safe yet burdened by a heavy facade that conceals his true feelings.

despite reassurances from his childhood friend iwaizumi that he’ll be fine, oikawa remains tormented by the idea of confessing to you. his biggest fear is your rejection. he doesn’t just worry about typical "what ifs" - what if she doesn’t feel the same way back? or, what if she avoids me if i tell her? he dreads everything that could go wrong, because he just knows he’ll never be able to get up if you turned him down.

call him dramatic (and he is), but the thought of you not returning his feelings feels catastrophic. he loves you deeply and prioritizes your feelings no matter what, but grapples with a selfish desire: to love you and only you. the idea of you not wanting that devastates him.

nevertheless, oikawa cherishes every moment with you, never taking your presence and whatever you have today for granted. each smile he puts on your face is a reward for him.

“y/n, you're here~” he greets you with an exaggerated wave from the court as soon as he sees you in the bleachers, waiting for him.

being the good friend you are, and a supportive student of your school, you were always present whenever the boys’ volleyball team had a match.

it was like your unofficial club at this point, and your friends keep teasing you that you’re only there for the one and only captain of the team. they weren’t completely wrong, but you keep denying it and tell yourself you’re just there ‘as a friend’.

you put on a big smile acknowledging his presence, “tooru!” you wave at him back excitedly, “do great today!”

he only chuckles in response, nodding and scratching the back of his head. “roger that!” he salutes, making you laugh.

you motioned for him to come closer, and he gladly did. from your pocket, you took something out and threw it down to him. "catch!"

of course, oikawa effortlessly caught it. opening his palm, he saw a friendship bracelet inscribed with his name and a heart. he couldn’t control his delight, wore it immediately, and looked up to you.

“with that, you’ll definitely win! no bets needed.” you smile at him.

“thank you, y/n!”

as he turns around to prepare for the match, there's a noticeable shift in his demeanor. “let's do this,” he declares, suddenly energized and ready, thanks to your support. with a stretch of his arms, he reassures himself that today will be a good day, as long as you're by his side, smiling at him.

“he’s so down bad for her,” matsukawa whispers to iwaizumi.

during the intense match that followed, oikawa displayed remarkable skill and determination, leading their team to a hard-fought victory.

after the match ended and the celebrations quiet down, he finds himself in the locker room, still catching his breath from the adrenaline rush. his face glistens with sweat, testament to the effort he put in. as he wipes his forehead with a towel, he finally breaks the silence with iwaizumi, his voice reflecting a mix of relief and curiosity. “i didn’t see y/n when the match ended. where is she?”

"oh, she was there until we finished our post-match rituals with the opponents," hanamaki chimed in, overhearing. "then i saw a senior from another school talking to her and they left together."

oikawa’s eyes immediately shot up at the mention of another person with you, because of two reasons: one, this is unusual to happen after a match, and two, just why?

his teammates knew what this meant for him. quickly changing into a clean jersey and packing his things, oikawa turned to them. "can you put my bag on the bus? i’ll look for her." this was more of a command instead of a favor, not caring any less if they were willing to do so or not.

he searched everywhere, navigating through volleyball players, fangirls, and schoolmates. his charismatic smile kept his fans engaged as he scanned the venue looking for you.

finally, near the staircase leading to the audience seats, he spotted a figure resembling you. hanamaki’s observation was spot on—there was indeed a man, tall and around his age, talking to you with a smile.

not wanting you to notice him, oikawa subtly moved for a better view. he froze as he saw you chuckling and tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. he couldn’t hear what you were talking about, but all that mattered was that a sweet smile was plastered on your face.

it pained him deeply. his face grew hot, and he hurriedly walked to the nearest water fountain to cool off. it’s fine, that’s nothing. there’s nothing to be upset about. it’s just them talking, that’s not a big deal. it’s not like they’re together or something. he was trying to distract himself, but it was to no avail.

deep down, he knew he was being selfish. he hates that he doesn’t have the right to feel this way. he hates that you’re not his. he feels stupid for feeling jealous over your non-existent relationship. he feels like shit, and it’s all just because you smiled, and it wasn’t because of him.

he thanked his lucky stars for being alone at the water fountain, because his eyes just started watering while stepping on the fountain’s pedal.

this scene is actually familiar to him already. there were definitely occasional moments like this where someone would approach you and ask you out, and he would hear about it, isolate himself, then cry about it out of jealousy and frustration.

it was a recurring episode he despised. in moments like these, he’d be furious with himself. why didn’t i make a move any sooner? of course y/n has other admirers, she’s perfect. i wouldn’t be surprised if she got a boyfriend. but it’s not me. i hate it. and i hate myself more because i didn’t do anything. what if she gets a boyfriend? will she stop talking to me? will whatever we have end? but still, she wouldn’t be mine. that’s the worst of it all.

he wiped his tears while drinking from the fountain, feeling pathetic. he hates crying like this, because he’s a grown man, but he also can’t help it because it’s you.

you are the only person who can override his emotions. you make him crazy, literally. you could make him laugh, cry, angry, happy, jealous, name all of them - all just with the thought of you.

he drowned himself with his own thoughts, trying to stifle his sobs.

“tooru? are you crying?”

your voice startled him and turned to your direction. “y/n…”

he stared at you, tears still in his eyes as he straightened up. this is the first time you’ve seen him cry since you both met - it’s not like he was someone who was emotional per se, especially around you.

"is something wrong?" concerned, you moved closer, reaching out to comfort him. he surprised you by wrapping his arms around you, holding you tightly.

taken aback but returning the hug, you drew circles on his back as he sobbed quietly against your shoulder. you wondered why he could be feeling this way. it’s not like they lost the match, and he was surely smiling like a champ the whole day.

there was a chance someone could’ve said or done something hurtful, but aside from those possibilities, there was nothing you could think of as to why he would feel this down, but whatever it was, you were ready to help him.

you waited patiently for him to compose himself, trying to figure out what had upset him. "i’m sorry, i…" he turned to face you, still hugging you. "don’t worry, i’ll be fine." he wiped his tears.

"you came at the right time, so i’ll be fine," he said, smiling weakly despite his red eyes. resting his chin on your head, he closed his eyes. "just bear with me a bit."

he slowly covers your ears with both of his hands, confusing you, but you allowed him, thinking that this is the best way you can help.

all of a sudden, you feel a kiss on your forehead. that surprised you for sure, but you forgot to react to it when you saw him mutter something with a small smile, and you couldn’t understand due to his hands hindering your sense of hearing.

“what?” you try to ask as he removes his hands on your ears and wraps his arms around you again. “did you say something? i can’t lip read, you know.”

he only chuckles, slowly regaining his composure, “you don’t need to know.”

figuring that you’ll let it pass, you let him hug you a while longer, knowing it comforted him. eventually, when he released you, his nose was still red and his eyes were slightly swollen.

"thank you for being here, y/n," he smiled, patting your head. "sorry for my sudden actions. i hope you didn’t mind."

you shook your head, not at all bothered. "it’s not like you did anything wrong," you reassured him. "i’m glad i could help."

you didn’t want to ask him about why he cried any further, nor how he ended up here, since if he wanted to talk about it, he would’ve said it already. at some point, oikawa prompted the both of you to get going, walking side by side. “by the way, i didn’t see you after we won. where did you go?”

he looks at you as you answer, “oh! a senior from another school told me he wanted to talk to me earlier - although i just realized i wasn’t able to know what school he was from, since his uniform didn’t give any hints.”

you continue, “anyway, he started off by mentioning the match. i thought he wanted to be introduced to you, thinking he saw us before the match. but then he asked me out,” your eyebrows furrow.

your answer tugs at oikawa’s heart a bit. “so, you’re going out on a daaate?” he said teasingly, putting up a facade. what a liar i am, he thought to himself.

you immediately react and wave your hands in denial, “no, no! when i knew he was asking me out, i turned him down immediately. besides, i’m interested in someone else.” as you finished the last sentence, you tried to look away from his gaze.

his eyes lit up momentarily. trying to conceal his emotions, he looked away for a second and fixed his expression, “i see.”

“anyway, and then i went here since i got thirsty, then there you were.” you finished explaining.

oikawa felt a whirlwind of emotions following your explanation. relief washed over him knowing nothing happened with the other guy, but the mention of you being interested in someone else gnawed at his mind. who could it be? his heart raced with both hope and anxiety, the idea of you liking someone else creating a knot in his stomach.

determined to spend more time with you, he resolved to uncover the truth about who you were interested in. or not. he actually doesn’t know.

"are you heading home now?" he asked, and you shook your head. "no, i need to stop by school. i have some things to pick up from our club room."

your answer lit up an idea for oikawa.

Amalia & Kevin

Despite the stern, impolite, and brash Kevin that we see in aftg, the Kevin that raises Amalia is almost a complete opposite

Kevin and Thea have split custody of Amalia, but Kevin has her a lot more often. She grows up in Kevin’s shadow, but he is very protective of her when it comes to his fame because he decided before she was even born that he did not want the same kind of childhood for her.

Amalia has Kevin’s determined and focused expression, the one that often mimics Wymack’s on the sidelines.

She also has Kevin’s resting bitch face, which Andrew is the one to point it out to Kevin, it leaves him speecsshless.

Amalia is a daddy’s girl and it’s always “daddy do it!” when him and Thea were still together.

Kevin carried her until shded literally got too big to carry, she’s his little girl and he surely treats her like the little princess she is.

Stern with her when need be because someone has to.

Ultimate sports dad. Goes to every single game of hers and cheers her on like all the other dads. Wymack, Jean and Jeremy relegate him to being a normal person about her playing exy instead of being kevin days daughter. Jeremy bc he’s seen the damage it can do, Jean bc he never got a choice in his future and needs to ensure she does, and Wymack bc he’s his voice of reason.

Kevin is the one who she goes to to complain and hear what she wants to hear, because Kevin is smart with his words when it comes to her.

Kevin is the one who teaches her to drive- the only one she lets because Jeremy is not a good driver and Jean doesn’t have the patience.

He takes her to shop for prom dresses with Abby and Amalia’s school friend. He gets teary eyed once she disappears back inside to take off the winner. She looks so much like his mother it hurts.

When Amalia is truly heartbroken over her relationship with Thea (because she sees how Katelyn Minyard is with the twins, how her friends are with their moms) then she cuddles with Kevin, something she hasn’t done to this extent in a few years, and falls asleep in his bed.

Amalia has Kevin’s stubbornness and hard headedness, his determination and confidence.

Amalia & Jeremy

Jeremy is the one that Amalia goes to when she wants something because more often than not he will say yes (within reason of course)

Jeremy is also the one that Amalia goes to when she fucks up and is scared of the consequences because Jeremy is the most patient of the three and operates by calmly talking things out and discussing what will probably happen while also making it clear that she has to tell the others or he will.

He is the one that she curls into and cries to when Thea doesn’t text her until 7pm for her 17th birthday, and who she confides in when someone in 8th grade questions her about her 3 dads and she doesn’t know what to say.

Jeremy and her go to the movies often and it’s their thing. They love Marvel movies and House of the Dragon (shut up ab timelines) and spend like 20 minutes after movies and weekly episodes debating and theorizing what this meant or what will happen next or what movie could come next.

Amalia and Jeremy share the same humor that he, Cat and Laila always had. They’re both silly and lighthearted and laugh with their whole bodies, a mimicked thing from over the years.

Amalia has Jeremy’s gentle heartedness and easy joy.

Amalia & Jean

^But Jean’s honesty and ability to verbally rip someone to shreds.

Jean is the most conscious of not stepping on Kevin and Thea’s toes when he and Jeremy get reintroduced into Kevin and Amalia’s lives, so he and Amalia take longer to bond. He and Kevin have too much history for him not to care about her, he’d take her in without question for her safety after the world they’d grown up in. But he knows there are limits when there is an existing family involved in the relationship he, Jeremy, and Kevin endeavor on.

Jean speaks to Amalia solely in French until she’s like 7 because Kevin and Thea were raising her bilingual and it was hard for Kevin to teach both when he had custody of her most of the time. Even after, French becomes their main mode of communication.

Jean teaches her to cook the same way that Cat once taught him. Coming becomes their thing.

Jean buys her pads and tampons when she gets her first period a month after Thea gets transferred three states over. It’s mortifying for her but Jean has zero shame and shows her how to use a tampon against her will.

Jean is the one Amalia goes to to complain and get a brutally honest answer or advice or whatnot. She goes to him when she’s pissed off and wants to scream because he’s surprisingly good at settling her with just facts and not feelings.

Amalia & Thea

Thea was heavily focused on her Exy career even after she had Amalia, but always made the time for her.

She and Amalia always had a special bond, but by the time Amalia is 9 that has greatly lessened. I don’t want to paint Thea as a bad guy bc it’s rlly not ab her as much as me simply wanting kerejean lol.

Amalia gets Thea’s skin tone, lighter but still not white. She teaches Amalia about her indian heritage and teaches her to love herself because she knows it’s not easy being a woman of color even if Amalia passes as a tan white girl with bright green eyes. Amalia learns to stick up for herself and correct people when they mis-label her as white.

She gets Thea and Kevin’s athleticism and height and ends up being 5’11.

Thea gets transferred to another team when Amalia is 12, and Kevin and Thea don’t go to court for custody because Thea knows Amalia needs to stay where she is with her family and friends and support systems. Thea is very supportive of Jeremy and Jean being in Amalia’s life bc she knows how important they are to her and wouldn’t rip her from that.

But her calls become less frequent over the years and although she visits when she can, Amalia doesn’t feel like she knows her as much as she should. Junior year of high school when Thea is a sports announcer or smth after retiring, she’s only able to get one weekend off not two in a row, and instead of using it for Amalia’s prom she uses it for her Exy tournament the weekend after. This crushes Amalia.

Amalia gets very jealous of other mother daughter bonds and Abby fills in as a mother figure while Thea is gone. Kevin, Jeremy, and Jean pick up on this easily and fill in where they can.

Amalia loves her mother, but she hates that she left. She hates that she didn’t visit, that her calls had spaced so far apart, that she wasn’t there 24/7 like she was supposed to be. She had 3 fathers that she loved, but nothing would compare to the way she remembered her mother brushing or braiding her hair and telling her stories when she was little.

Significant other?

I don’t have anyone planned out for her rn bc in the AU she’s freshly 17, but I think she befriends a kid from her high school exy team, a boy striker a year below her. He lives with his aunt and uncle because his mother died and his father is in prison, and Amalia often times finds him in the gym practicing alone because it’s so quiet at home, and his aunt and uncle are lovely but it’s just jarring to get used to, not having parents.

Amalia is a dealer, so she invites him to practice with her on the weekend when “my dads are free. we have scrimmages sometimes.”

And he agrees but hesitantly. He knows who Amalia’s parents are, and he knows he’s no match for them. But she’s delighted when he’s actually waiting there when she walks into the gym that weekend with Kevin and Jeremy in tow. Bc he’s dorky and kinda quiet which rivals her family, so she wasn’t expecting him to actually show.

The kid does pretty well, but unsurprisingly gets lots of criticism from Kevin. He doesn't waste time with the switch from how he played to how Kevin is telling him to play instead. He’s the pro after all.

Then it becomes a habit, practicing with Amalia with or without her family, and eventually he impresses their coach enough to let him start a game.

Then they start hanging out more often.

He gets more playing time, which Amalia likes, because he's a reliable player and quick to call for help. Morgan’s other seniors don't do that and it infuriates her because then it's her fault for not dropping her mark and helping out.

And then he starts getting invited over for lunch after going to the court on the weekends. He gets along with Jeremy and finally meets Jean who grips his hand hard when he shakes it and says something to Amalia in french just to make him sweat bc this is the kid that's been making her smile at her phone so often?

Kevin doesn’t know when things go from friendly to more than that, but jean is the first to notice. He brings it up to Kevin and Jeremy first bc did they even establish rules on dating?! But then Jeremy sees Amalia run out to the lawn and jump into his arms and nearly take him down on the ring camera and- did she just kiss him?! Before getting into his car?! Did no one else see that?!

“You’re freaking out”

“Yeah, within reason though, right? She’s dating!”

“Kev, not to alarm you, but there's also a good chance she's kissed a boy by now, too. She’s seventeen.”

This is what I mean when I say the anti-Steve Rogers hate is annoying because why every time I come across a tiktok/post about Steve/Captain America, I have to see Tony stans 🤣

You can very easily see that it TRANSCENDS fanfic and socmed platforms because they actively go out of their way to make sure everyone knows what they think of Steve. And almost 100% of the time, they're Tony stans.

YOU WILL NEVER SEE A STEVE FAN DOING THIS. (And if u do, it's one-off comments, not spam)

I'm a Tony fan, I love him in almost every version of him across the marvel media, but this level of obsession with Steve has to be studied💀🤣. In tiktoks about Tony, you won't ever find this much comments about Steve to the point where it's spam. But almost all the ones about Cap, the comment section is flooded with hate for Steve.

And all the pro-Tony/anti-Steve bugs that came out of the woodwork for my last post about this? THIS is why discourse is needed and nuanced discussions about the mischaracterization of characters to the point where yall are doing this on posts that aren't even about Tony.

Steve fans will have discourse about the different elements of his character, admit his flaws, and KEEP it to ao3 or tumblr or wherever the discourse is happening.

Tony stans will go out of their way to tell the whole world how much they love Tony and hate Steve and they'll do it wherever and whenever they can. That's the difference between Steve fans and Tony stans (and I use stans for Tony because yall are bordering on cult behaviour.)

You know...This whole Tumblr Premium thing has me realize something...

And its that Tumblr...Does better when it does NOTHING!

Facebook, as I understand, is slowly being taken over by AI bots posting AI generated SLOP and people are reacting to said images like they're real and a marvel of the human spirit! But I have a sneaking suspicious that the people reacting to those images are ALSO AI bots! Literally? Facebook is Dead Internet Theory you can look at! Twitter, It's being ran to the ground by a Melon Husk! Who time and time again has shown that he has zero idea of how to run a Socmed! prompting people to leave THAT hell hole and either come to this hell site or the contemporaries that popped up when the Muskrat took the wheel! And apparently it has a worsening bot problem then tumblr!!

And Tumblr? sometimes I like to call tumblr the "Luigi of Socmeds". In that while Facebooks brain melts from the failure of crypto and, by extension, The Metaverse and Twitter faces an X-tinction event over 2 years in the making Tumblr just has to do...Literally NOTHING while the other two flail helplessly in there own ineptitude! And win!

...So is tumblr doing nothing? No it's doing SOMETHINGS. Like literally copying the twitters UI and most recently the outrageous pay model of $70 a year to browse this site ad free!! And this is in the wake of the CEO apparently being Transmisogynist and harrassing a transwoman across different platforms C'MON TUMBLR

Your two rivals are suffering a shit show and you literally took one wrong step too many!

What happened to to being "Luigi of Socmeds"? You were in a position to win by doing NOTHING!!!

LITERALLY NOTHING AT ALL!!

How would you do a modern adaptation of The Invisible Man?

The big thing I'd want to do, regardless of whatever other details of the setting/story end up altering, is to keep Griffin's sense of alienation/isolation at the forefront and to keep the audience's access to his POV carefully controlled. I think the particulars of the characters' misadventures with locals and turn towards violence can vary a lot, but what I think actually makes The Invisible Man fascinating beyond being an exercise in a sci-fi "what if" are the ways that its title character is/is not visible to the reader and feels himself to be cut off from humanity even before he erases himself from it.

If what you mean by "modern adaptation" is an update of the story to the modern day, I honestly think that having him remain an impoverished, embittered, paranoid, self-medicating graduate student isn't all that hard a transfer to make. What would be a little more interesting to tackle would be the ways that hearsay and newspapers work together to craft the public's vision of the invisible man and how one might transfer that into a modern age of surveillance and technology (Can Griffin function as an independent researcher undetected when most research is online? Does the difference in socmed rumor/24 hour news further distort his story?) I'd also be interested in how to configure Thomas Marvel or an equivalent character as having similar outsider/off-grid status. I'd also make very very sure that the murder of Mr. Wicksteed is not directly shown to the audience but is assembled--as it is in the novel--via inference and witness accounts.

Overall, I guess, the thing I'd want to push to the forefront is the degree to which Griffin's POV is never quite handed to us directly and certain aspects of him remain a cipher even to the audience. I think that's a thing that can come through regardless of the shift in medium or setting.

That gaggle of fujoshippers been complaining online constantly since the F&WS D+ show that marvel's "de-gaying" bc his decrepit actor looks like the old grown ass man w 🍆&🍒 that he is + bc he cut his hair short after no longer being enslaved by Nazis who kept it long. But over the past couple years these same people who only saw BuckyCap+BuckyNat panels and called comics Bucky "dudebro Bucky that his actor likes" started noticing how he's been drawn more and more like their own Winter Soldier fanarts and have been posting online abt how "short" and "tiny" and "babygirl" comics Bucky is ......

I think them noticing the comics started ever since that crossover with the Steve & Bucky variants revealed the new designs of the Filipino Barnes-variant, and these fujoshippers started posting online how excited they were that Steve's variants are male and Bucky's variants are female + when the comic came out there were so many posts abt how Bucky looks like Winter Soldier with his long "babygirl" hair for the "daddy" Steve.... _—_ bc that's these shippers' MO.. and they noticed the comics have been lining up with their fujoheadcanons like that -_-

But now after the SoL runs it's Really Over because the increased Bucky character assassination bc Marvel does NOT know how to write Bucky do they regress him the WS and those same middleaged mlm-fujofiers are the loudest voices on SocMed posting about the runs and praising it for having "smol pretty hair bbg" Bucky w a "old daddy silver fox" Steve.

Like it's rlly Over. the comics wasted and reversed Bucky's character development and visual design and turned him so OOC blank slate for a certain type of person to project onto without a real define identity, and that attracted that crowd + now they're the mains ones who tb the comics

have to agree with you anon. i don’t want to gatekeep comics but with they way mcu stuckies are behaving lately with the current run…it doesn’t help that the cap twitter account keeps promoting the run by only posting steve & bucky-centric panels, obviously aiming for the stuckies to notice and share it as a way of promotion. it’s just funny to me that they’re now flocking to the comics when they’re the ones who are like “fuck the comics” “i don’t care for the comics but in my opinion they suck cuz our ship has a father-son dynamic there” 🥴
