Me whenever I see someone completely misinterpret Jayce’s character and dumb him down to “privileged white boy” (even though he’s not even white omg):

It’s so frustrating, like in the show where EVERY CHARACTER is morally grey and you’re supposed to consider every side to the story, you decide that this one guy should be shit on

Like yes he didn’t make any good choices as a councillor and was spontaneous in his decision making, but he was only a councillor for like a few days at most and literally doesn’t know shit about politics as HES A SCIENTIST!

Also he was trying to help the Undercity, him and Viktor developed technology to better their lives and were planning ways to clean their waters but BOTH got caught up in the progress of Piltover that: “In the effort to do great, we forgot to do good” they both lost their way and forgot about those they originally wanted to help

Yes he didn’t destroy the Hexcore when Viktor told him too, but he was panicking after the explosion literally KILLED VIKTOR and did the only thing he could think of in this chaotic situation, he then later fulfilled his promise by destroying the Hexcore when he shot Viktor (though at that point it was little to late as Viktor had already become part of the arcane web)

And also to reiterate HES NOT WHITE! Like I know his mum only shows up for a few seconds but she’s not white either and it’s made abundantly clear in his backstory that they are not from Piltover and Jayce’s mother married into the Talis family (Jayce is quite literally an immigrant) So don’t erase his ethnicity just because you don’t like him

Young Avengers; Young Avengers Special; Young Avengers Presents: Wiccan & Speed-- introduces Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd, who learn that they are Wanda's reincarnated sons and begin searching for her.

Avengers: Children's Crusade-- the Young Avengers, Magneto, and Quicksilver discover Wanda as an amnesiac living in the care of Doctor Doom. They help her recover her memories and her powers are returned to normal.

Avengers vs. X-Men-- Wanda rejoins the Avengers. Alongside Hope Summers, Wanda helps banish the Phoenix from Earth and causes a proliferation of new mutant to manifest, the first step in her redemption for M-Day.

AXIS-- Wanda & Pietro learn that Magneto is not their father after all, and they're not actually mutants.

Uncanny Avengers Vol 2 (miniseries)-- the twins learn that their powers are the result of the High Evolutionary's genetic experiments.

Scarlet Witch (2016)-- Wanda returns to her magical focus and has henceforth been written as an adept spellcaster. The series does a lot of worldbuilding around witches and witchcraft. The twins learn that their birth mother was actually Django's sister, Natalya Maximoff, and that they are descended from a long line of Scarlet Witches.

Doctor Strange (2016)-- Wanda is featured in the Last Days of Magic storyline.

Uncanny Avengers Vol 3 #26-30-- Wanda rejoins the Avengers Unity Division and begins a relationship with Doctor Voodoo.

Avengers Vol 1 #675-690-- a crossover event titled Avengers: No Surrender.

Quicksilver: No Surrender-- an excellent miniseries following the previous event. Wanda and Jericho use magic to aid Pietro.

Avengers: No Road Home-- a sequel to No Surrender.

Strange Academy-- Wanda becomes a faculty member at a school for young magic users.

Darkhold (2021)-- the original Darkhold is discovered; Wanda's prior experiences have made her strong enough to handle it without corruption; she merges the Darkhold with her own soul and uses it to bind Chthon.

Trial of Magneto (2021)-- Wanda stages her own death as part of an elaborate scheme to gain access to, and magically enhance, the Krakoan resurrection system, leading to her final redemption for M-Day.

Scarlet Witch (2023)-- Wanda opens a metaphysical shop in upstate New York and constructs a magical portal called the Last Door, which opens anywhere in the world for those in need.

Avengers (2023)-- Wanda joins a new iteration of the Avengers, led by Captain Marvel.

the king of cups in tarot of the divine in connected to a chinese tale of the dragon pearl where a boy is faced with a famine in his land, but discovers a magical pearl that enables everyone to eat; in this tale, someone from the town becomes greedy and steals the pearl, and the boy eventually turns into a dragon forever in order to serve as a protector, so no one can be greedy over the land ever again. 

yeonjun could feel similar to this story when it comes to the idea of being romantic with foreigners; there could be set expectations for yeonjun when it comes to dating but especially in regards to carrying on family lineage in some way. with five of wands present he’s come to some sort of compromise with whoever is making him feel this way (maybe his parents? other older family members? even society itself could be the reason), but it’s kind of hidden with the moon being present. intuitively, it feels like a situation where maybe he’s allowed to explore with dating only, but when it comes to marrying he could be expected to only be with someone who’s korean or “heavily approved by [his] family”. yeonjun himself may be the type of person who “goes with the flow”, and he could usually (or currently) be described as the page of swords upright – someone who’s curious about those who are different from him, and he could want to interact with foreigners, but is in a state right now where that may not be possible. he could push back on this later on though because the image of a sunflower came through which can represent growth and possible happiness when everything is said and done. 

TLDR; he seems interested and might explore dating a foreigner, but not currently thinking of marriage due to restrictions

but like, he is very much a Soc and is definitely accepted in that group of almost entirely white kids (myth of the model minority and everything) but there is still this otherness about him that makes him feel very isolated

and i think he does find himself kind of jealous of someone like Two-bit who doesn’t seem to be trying to blend in and who is fine with existing as he is. but Paul’s dad is very much using assimilation into american society to deal with the trauma of the wwii era and paul is raised on that principle

i don’t really want to play into the stereotype of the strict Asian parent, but i do think that Paul’s dad sets these very high expectations for him as a defense mechanism/an attempt to force his family into the status of the “model minority.” As a successful and wealthy Japanese American businessman in 1960s Oklahoma, he has to be twice as perfect to be taken as seriously as a white man, and he wants his son to be successful, too, so he drills that message into Paul’s head from a pretty early age.

and i think that probably fucks Paul up a little. for years he doesn’t really get why his dad’s expectations are so high and he feels like he’s never going to be good enough and he is a teenage boy in the 60s so he doesn’t know how to like. express an emotion and his feelings of inadequacy come out as resentment and anger that is often directed towards his dad

Paul grows up not knowing about the incarceration and how/where his parents met but his mom very casually mentions something about it when he’s around 15-16 and he’s like ??? and so she explains some stuff to him and he is understandably shocked and above all pretty pissed at his dad for keeping this huge thing from him for so long

so that night he and Darry get drunk together and he starts off just being like “FUCK my dad fr” but then he kind of like actually talks about his relationship with his race and his heritage for the first time

his dynamic with Darry is like. they are both jealous of each other in this very abstract way because neither one of them feels like they belong anywhere but there is also something extremely homoerotic about it. they kind of allow themselves to be more soft and open with each other and it’s clear they have a bond that none of the other Soc boys share

I think after Paul finds out about his parents’ past (and after he sleeps off the ensuing hangover) he goes snooping and finds a box of old photos and stuff from their time in Arkansas and there’s this photograph from their wedding and they are clearly in this like kind of rundown recreation center/high school gym-type space and their clothes are nothing fancy but they look more in love than he’s ever seen them and it’s this really surreal experience that makes him feel a little sick so he puts the box back and pretends he never saw it

when he and Darry stop being friends he loses the only person he’s ever been able to talk to about the things that matter and he becomes pretty closed off emotionally and doesn’t really allow himself to feel anything real and tries twice as hard to assimilate 

Joining the other Soc boys in jumping greasers and wreaking general havoc is kind of a coping mechanism for the debilitating anger that he is constantly feeling but it’s also an unsuccessful attempt to fit in with these all-American boys

He tries so so hard to fit in and never really feels like he belongs, especially after he and Darry stop being friends

idk there is just something so purposeful about the choice to have a Japanese American actor portray this character and i think there’s so fucking much to explore within that choice <3

They are the first ones to throw slurs at me. They are the first to say I should go back to my own country (and then say Reservation when I say that this is my country). They are the first ones to literally throw things at me at my day job. Here's what you need to understand, sticking up for White Supremacists is just as fucked as being one. White Supremacists don't respect Indigenous Peoples. They want us gone. They want us somewhere they never have to see us. Reservations are not something we got out of respect. We have Reservations because we were forced to and it was all we were allowed. This is my ancestral land, and they still think I should be forced to live in another state because the government decided over a century ago (as the Nation I'm registered with was one of the last to be forced onto a Reservation) because they want to live here, in America, on traditional land, without wanting to see us.

White Supremacists don't respect us or any minorities. They want us out of their face. "A place for all races" just means out of their face or in what they consider in our place. A White Supremacist government is what created Reservations in the first place. A White Supremacist government is what forced my great grandmother's grandfather to be born on the side of the road during the march to the Reservation.

I am a firm believer that America is a Melting Pot. I am mixed race. I am proud of every aspect of who I am. I can list every ethnicity/race I am as I and my family are firm believers in knowing where you come from. As a child, my mom would quiz me on what I was and what side of my family it came from. It is worth mentioning that for a long time they will be the butt of jokes on family holidays due to the large number of children

I’m Sara - by ethnic origin, I am Arabic and Turkish. I was othered my entire childhood and dealt with seriously atrocious racist attacks.

As I got older, those things lessened and people started assuming I was white or biracial in part due to my having dyed my hair blonde.

Since then, I’ve experienced racism of a different kind - I get told I am a “shallow white girl” who doesn’t have the right to speak about issues facing POC by people from all different ethnicities.

I’ve had enough of that. I may not look like your typical WOC but I am a woman of color. And I will not be silenced.

Why I am not offended by the portrayal of Illyrian culture in Sarah J Maas’s books:

1. I’m from a Muslim family and grew up going to mosques in the Western World, where some of the very oppressive and sexist ideals about women and their place in society were preached from the stands and actively shared by members of the community.

2. I was chronically shamed by my peers in the community for being into my education and for wearing makeup or for daring to speak to boys.

3. The above happened in the United States in the community I grew up in because oppressive, sexist ideals travel across immigration. I clawed my way out of this community and will never look back.

3. Honor killings still happen where I’m from. To this day.

4. Genital mutilation still happens in the regions where I’m from to this day.

5. Women are not allowed to drive in some countries in the region where I’m from to this day.

6. Women are publicly beaten or stoned to death in those regions to this day.

7. Women have to be fully covered up when they leave the house in the region where I’m from to this day.

8. Women are silenced and told not to speak in public - even just to talk to someone - and not to leave their houses without a male chaperone in the region where I’m from to this day.

How does this relate to Illyrian culture and ACOTAR?

Do I really need to explain the answer to that? I realize that some people may have grown up in Middle Eastern families and not had the experience I had. Some of my experience is also due to Islamic religious ideas and not simply cultural ideals. And there are some people who may love where they came from and have had a radically different experience than my own. That does NOT make my experience less valid, nor does it make my criticisms of the culture and countries I’m referring to less valid or accurate.

To me, the portrayal of the Illyrians is an accurate representation of what goes on in some pockets of the mid east, and for that very reason, I’m not offended.

In fact, wing clipping is essentially the fictional version of genital mutilation, which still happens in the cultures that people say Illyria is inspired by.

It is not racist to look at something and call it out for what it is. If I were to say, every single ME person I’ve ever met adheres to some of the more fundamentalist and sexist rhetoric I heard and continue to see, that would be racist and untrue.

The reality is there will also always be people who attack Sarah J Maas because she’s Jewish, especially at this time with conversations about Zionism running rampant. I married a Jewish man. I’ve seen anti-semitism firsthand. I also saw it growing up among the more nationalistic people I grew up with who hated the idea of an Israeli country.

What you can do:

Stand up for women around the world who don’t enjoy the same freedoms you do, and quit picking fights about a book series. Look to solve real problems instead of making some up.

https://www.tumblr.com/olderthannetfic/768717906564481024/httpswwwtumblrcomolderthannetfic768202239176?source=share i agree with this post. generally but i also think it's important to caution against reductiveness in the opposite direction. like, a lot of cis women will consciously choose "male socialization" on certain areas where they reject the female version - or also frankly, because it's the 21st century and there are progressive parents who actively try to disrupt typical gendered socialization with how they raise their children. i had a very "male" communication style in terms of stuff like how i talked in class, how i spouted off about topics i knew a lot about, debating, arguing, etc. partly because i'm autistic, but also because i was raised by a feminist trial attorney mother who basically gave me the opposite messages that most girls get around that stuff. the sexist teachers that all my female friends hated and who ignored or belittled them always liked me because i spoke up the way that the boys did, so they saw me as the glorious token exception. gendered socialization exists in broad patterns that are important to talk about for how they can contribute to gender inequality, but there's really no one universal "male" or "female" socialization anyway, especially when you take in all the other things that affect how people are socialized (class, race, ethnicity, family education level, country/region being other examples for instance). there are lots of exceptions to those patterns obviously among trans people, especially ones who knew they were trans from a young age, but just as many among cis people too. (also, sidenote, one of the things that always amused me about terf rhetoric around "female socialization" is some of it seems to be based on people with THE most traditional upbringings and then treating that as universal. like i remember seeing a lot of stuff asserted as The Universal Female Experience that were stuff like "i was told i couldn't date anyone without my dad meeting and approving him first" or "i was told that it was wrong for me to go to college or have a job" and i just want to be like, i'm sorry but if you're younger than a certain age i don't know how to tell you that in fact that's not MOST cis women's "socialization," at least among the parts of the world that are most represented on english-language social media. i think your problem was less just being a woman and more being a woman raised by quiverfulls or something like that. even less weird stuff like "i was told from an early age that marrying was far more important than my career or education" - a lot of women of particular socioeconomic backgrounds are explicitly told the opposite for most of the beginning of our lives. like that dating/sex is a distraction from college and careers. a lot of why some women i know in the age i am now, late 20s/early 30s, are so floored by sudden parental pressure for them to marry and have kids is it's a reversal from everything they'd been previously told - but of course that's only because they're now "settled" in their careers and can focus on that!)
