Mr Scott's Influence Black Sails Musical Parallels | XII. XXIII. XXXIII.

I spent a year rewatching Black Sails and tracking all the bits of music that repeated at any point during the show, and my findings are reinforcing that Bear McCreary is a genius and this show should have been called 'parallels that will kill you over and over again'* (tag | chronological)

These two scenes link with so much of what I already talked about that I don't even know where to start. I suppose the first thing to mention would be that this is, again, the first clue about why I see Madi as The Leader, a leader not Flint, not her mother and not anyone else is capable of being.

In the first scene (also the first conversation between the two), Silver explains to Madi and to us as viewers the key difference between Flint and the queen. And to me, it serves to analyze why that difference.

Both Flint and the queen have been defeated by England. Flint as a queer person and the queen as a black person and as a woman. Both have seen the horrors she is capable of causing, they have suffered them personally. But while the queen has her husband, her daughter and many people she cherishes and who trust her, Flint has nothing. That is the key that differentiates the various approaches of the two against the country.

And not only this, it is also important to clarify that Flint is still a white man with an remarkable ability to manipulate, which makes him able to access certain spaces that she could not reach so easily. I said once that Miranda was so interested in seeking forgiveness because she had a better chance of fitting back into society than Flint and here it is again, Flint has a better chance of fitting back in than the queen.

For Flint and the queen, their decisions are made from a personal point of view. And this is where Madi comes in. For she knows the horrors, she has seen the pain and is aware of the sacrifices her parents have made for her and their people, such that it has almost cost her her relationship with her father… but she has not suffered them herself, her parents have made sure of that. And that makes her relatively optimistic about the future but also objective and cold, knowing full well what the possible implications are for her and her people, whom she will one day lead.

I feel like I have a lot more to say about Madi but for now I will stop, I will talk more about her in the future, I still need to delve deeper into her various capabilities as a leader and her relationships with both Silver and Flint. There is SO much to be said about Madi, god I love her.
