Mark the Tapir had me thinking
If I were to parody Sonic fans, I wouldn’t parody the “cringe“ side, because even if I think something is disgusting, I know better than to be an asshole about it. Rather, I would parody the toxic sonic fans. In other words, think less that subset of people who draw Sonic with realistic, humanoid feet, and more that subset of people on this website that seem to think Ian Flynn is the devil incarnate.

GO GO HORDIKA RANGERS
A less traumatic approach to the Toa Hordika redesign
Oh boy, where to start? Since I had alot going behind the scenes redesigning these. Well lets start with me having an idea to basically having the Rahi be like Power Rangers' helmet motive. So did a research on their Rahi, personality, profession, etc.
So ended up being: Tiger (Vakama), Shark (Nokama), Snake (Matau), Owl (Nuju), Bull (Onewa), and Boar (Whenua) (Was thinking of mole at first but somehow the final design makes it look more like a tapir-ish boar than a mole). Then had an idea to incorporate their Metru masks as their helmets' lower half, which then made me realize that pretty much their Hordika masks are just "Elongated Face, with Horizontal Markings". So had to get a bit creative with that.
Then had to design their silhouettes/bodytypes since, might as well. So scoured their set heights from photos and building instructions. Ended up with having their Turaga forms as the main height reference and then mixed up with their Metru Height.
Also designed custom Hordika chest pieces, which then prompts me to scour every toa team ever (+Bohrok and the Kals, cause why not).
So yes, its a lot of work. I have no idea why I do this to myself.

I believe in ravager retirement (<- in denial)
Also bonus new ravager design inspired by ice age megafauna and totally not also Decked Out 2
Image ID: a digital drawing of SolidarityGaming/Jimmy petting a ravager. He’s a blond-haired man with similarly colored golden bird wings and tail feathers. The ravager is a huge ungulate-like creature, its shoulders just barely shorter than Jimmy is tall. It’s grey and thickly furred, with markings reminiscent of a wolf. It has tall bull-like horns. It has little white hairs around its face, shoulders and back, as well as big grey scars; both indicating age. Jimmy’s standing at the ravager’s chest, standing on his tip-toes so he can scratch the underside of the ravager’s chin. The ravager has its eyes closed happily and is messing up Jimmy’s hair with its short tapir-like trunk. /End ID

Just a colored sketch page for now, no rendering. Russian dragons. Not up to scale (don’t trust that visual on the right)
Of these, only the Russian Gray and Ironwing are named in the book (The Gray only in LoD). Both the Ironwing and Cossack dragon didn’t come with descriptions of any sort so I just winged it. Thoughts under the cut.
Russian Heavyweight - Big, green, and mean. Well, Vosyem was green, so this guy is green. Overlapping plates made me lean more on pangolin scales than thyreophoran but doing all the scales is killing me. I gave it a large nasal boss(I think thats the term?) to resemble the tapir-faced depictions of Zmei that had enraptured me since I was young.
The tortoise resemblance was not realized until after I colored everything, but theres only so many ways for long neck and humped back and thick rolls over shoulders read to me. Well, there’s the sauropod type but I prefer a more sprawling pose. I do want it a bit longer but I just like long dragons in general. Need to hold back on it. If everything is long then nothing is Long.
Russian Gray - Mostly gray and white with a narrow arrow-shaped head. They were described as stippled with spots of gray and black. I had on my notes that it was six to seven, but I lacked context on whether it was the number of individuals in the scene or its weight.
Heads being described as arrow shaped confuse me a little. Maybe my English is not good because I keep thinking it’s like… diplocaulus, which is NOT narrow. Yu-Lung, described with the same head shape, was also described to be vulpine, so that’s what I did here.
Russian Black - One of the other lightweights held in the Russian grounds along with the Russian Gray. Described as black dragons smaller than the Grays. Resembles the Russian couriers. Nothing much to say. Slavic dragons seem to be depicted with a crown every so often, so I gave it a crown of small horns.
Every time there’s a black dragon breed from Europe I keep remembering Laurence saying something about how there’s no black dragons known in Europe back when he was still a Naval captain.
Courier - Two red courier dragons were snoozing next to a flag. I’m inclined to think it’s a Russian breed, but it described the flag they were sleeping beside as white and red. Granted, I’m not really familiar with European history or flags. Maybe it’s a company flag?
Cossack - No description other than being courier weight or fly weight, the size of winchesters. Did you know that the Russian Don, cavalry horses of the Cossack, originated from Russian Steppe horses and Oriental breeds obtained from raids? I gave it a more camelid head, but didn’t want the horse inspiration to be too obvious. Not happy with the coloration just yet.
I kinda wanted it to be slightly bigger for some size variety, but it’s unlikely to be that much bigger than the other Russian lightweights. In the British (European?) weight system a flyweight is barely combat weight, isn’t it? So larger than courier weight but not that much…
Ironwing - Venomous. Thats it for textual description. Not much to go off of, so I put a lesser version of the heavyweight armor on it to help bridge the heavyweight to the others and slapped rusty iron colors. I wanted to give it some more resemblance(Is that the word?)for being an ancestor of the Longwing, so I gave it some familiar wing markings. Might add bone spurs but maybe I should keep that a sharpspitter thing.
#temeraire#dragons#sketches#hmd russian dragons#russian gray#hmd ironwing#literally no other breed is named so just a gen russian dragon tag for them#I’m suffering theres an idea I wanted to finish but drawing bridge is beating me up#and trying to conceptualize an irrigation system#I have bitten off more than I can chew#if anyone wants to request a dragon for me to try my hand on I appreciate any distraction coming my way

Bestiaryposting Results: Basekhwa
Interesting one this time, in that we've got a lot of details, but not a lot of specificity as to what it looks like. The most we get is phrases like "with a tap of the hoof" which can cue us into the fact that it has hooves. Mostly we hear about things it does. So, before we see what people did with that, the obligatory links.
If you are confused as to what this post is about, please see https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting. The specific entry this week's artists are working from can be found here:
And now, art below the cut in roughly chronological order.
@sweetlyfez (link to post here) got hers in first this week, and it's a really charming creature. I think the colored-pencil medium gives the drawing a little extra something. A really clever interpretation here, I think, is that it has a trunk for catching snakes -- which makes sense if you think about it. The first thing we're told about them is:
Basekhwas are the enemies of snakes; when they feel weighed down with weakness, they draw snakes from their holes with the breath of their noses and, overcoming the fatal nature of their venom, eat them and are restored.
If an animal is luring snakes out by putting its nose against their hidey-holes, it seems entirely sensible to have the nose do double duty as an appendage for dealing with the snakes when they come out. I also enjoy the long flappy ears and the tapir-like coloration. This one, it seems, has been shot -- the entry does say they're an easy mark for archers -- but that's what the snake is for. (And thank you for the alt text.)
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) notes that a creature that is mentioned to have both hooves and horns is surely an ungulate. I don't know enough about taxonomy to comment, so sure! They've picked a couple different ungulates to mix together for this design -- for details on that, see the linked post -- and given it a horn structure that's ideal for scooping up snakes from the ground, which I like. They describe it as turning out quite "feral unicorn-esque", which I can definitely see.
@cheapsweets (link to post here) brings us another detailed pen drawing. In their laudable drive to incorporate as much of the material as possible, we can see that they have found a creative way to show us additional scenes in this animal's life: in little vignettes on the Stylized Tree. Another fun nose on this one, too -- CheapSweets notes that it's inspired by the saiga antelope. All of this is very good, and the baby hidden in the bush is adorable. For detailed discussion of this art and how it relates to the entry, please see the linked post. (And thank you for the alt text.)
@pomrania (link to post here) regrettably was unable to do a final version, but posted their doodles. Given that I'm tagged in the post, I assumed they were meant to be put here. I kind of like the glimpse here into their process, with all these different scenes from the entry being brought in to toy with. Also I think the one labelled "frozen" is quite funny, and I enjoy that one is labelled "baby".
@strixcattus (link to post here) gives us this rather chimeric creature that kind of makes me think of an okapi if you turned the "different fur patterns in the front and back" thing up to 11. What I really like here is the horn asymmetry -- there's a little of it in CheapSweets's entry, in the middle vignette if you look close, but Strixcattus is taking it to another level. Both artists seem to have been inspired by the same part of the entry, i.e., this sentence:
Of their horns, the right-hand one is better for medical purposes.
If one horn is better medicine than the other, it's pretty reasonable to think they might look different. What I think is interesting here is that CheapSweets decided the medicinal horn should be the longer one, but Strixcattus made it the shorter one. Much to think about. (Oh, and the way it's posed so that the horns frame the sun is also really cool in my opinion.) As usual, please check out the linked post for Strixcattus's modernized description of this beast; I think this week's is particularly interesting actually.
Side note: I did a quick google to make sure that the okapi was indeed the animal I was thinking of and this was the first suggested question in the results (note that I just searched "okapi", no other words) :
... oh dear. The way search results are changing really is going to be a problem, isn't it?
@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has drawn something I find delightful. (And not just because I like her medieval-inspired style.) I actually laughed out loud seeing this one just because it's such a fun take. Here we have a Basekhwa "weighed down with weakness" and "draw[ing] snakes from their holes with the breath of [its] nose." I think everyone else went with "the breath is a lure and then the Basekhwa grabs/stabs/stomps/bites them", but Coolest-Capybara decided that it's not exhaling, it's inhaling, and it just hoovers the snakes out. I love it. Both the tired-looking Basekhwa and the rather panicked-looking snake are amazing. (And thank you for the alt text.)
Anyway, to the Aberdeen Bestiary:
... um.
Yeah, there are a few of these -- I think this is the second we've seen so far. Someone cut out an illustration at some point. So we're going to look towards the "sister manuscript", the Ashmole Bestiary:
So this one is... a deer.
I didn't know any of that stuff about deer, did you?
Not much I have to add here, but let me share a folk etymology I redacted for this entry.
The offspring of the deer are called hinnuli, 'fawns', from innuere, 'to nod', because at a nod from their mother, they vanish from sight.
I just... I don't think that's true.

Tapir the Rainwing
[Image ID: A digital drawing of an old desaturated purple rainwing dragon named Tapir. He has long black horns that curl back around. His underbelly and the inside of his wings are a darker cool colored purple. The frills, his muzzle and his eyebrows are all graying due to age. An off-white color also features on him, at the tip of his curly tail, and from his ankles to his shoulders, similar to a tapir's markings, and giving him an overall like appearance. He has eye bags and moles all over his body. He's laying down curled up, positioning his head curled to his flank with a depressed look on his face. /.End ID]

I know Pearl undoubtably is already prepared with a long list of words for her wordle game, but I actually have a list of wordle-esque words that I love and that I wanted to share [words with a * beside them are words that could only be used if pearl replaces the q with the w like many people suggested]
words related to flowers/plants and dyes/colours, because its on theme for the shop: tulip ochre umber lotus anise - an aromatic plant cultivated for its seeds, produces a liquorice like taste sumac - a tangy Persian spice made from specific plants in the genus Rhus, related to the cashew family petal basil olive thorn
other words that I personally think would be fun: atone *world *swamp audio *askew canoe epoch - a time period typically marked by notable events or characteristics in a persons life aglet - the plastic or sometimes metal tube fixed around the end of a shoelace or drawstring smelt audit spiel flout - to openly disregard, typically in regards to a rule, law, or convention tidal avert scorn fjord/fiord [New Zealand] - a long, narrow, and deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs ascot - a broad ended necktie or scarf, typically worn by men and popular in the 1890s *schwa - the unstressed mid-central vowel represented in the International Phonetic Alphabet as /ə/ sprue - a channel through which metal or plastic is poured into a mold gnome grail ichor - in Greek mythology, the fluid that flows through the veins of the gods veldt - open and uncultivated grassland of southern Africa inane venom elude sable - a species of marten [a weasel-like mammal] with a short tail and dark brown fur, native to Japan and Siberia marsh tempo unagi - a type of freshwater eel commonly used as an ingredient in Japanese cooking enoki - an edible Japanese mushroom burqa/burka - a loose garment worn by some Muslim women which covers the body completely from head to toe tapir - a nocturnal hoofed mammal resembling a pig native to the forests of tropical America and Malaysia

Time to actually start thinking about the Bestiaryposting creature of the week, if I want to get its design done today and the picture done tomorrow (because it was NOT fun, having to rush last week). This is the "narngreg".
Things actually mentioned about its physical description... it's beautiful, multi-coloured, "dabbed all over with very small circular spots [...] black and white colouring with eye-shaped circles of yellow", the young have sharp claws, gives birth to live young.
Things that are implied by what we're given.... Likely a mammal because of the whole "live birth" thing, but it could always be Something Weird (like a gryphon, which... honestly I'm not positive this isn't, like I don't THINK it's a gryphon but I can't be sure). It sleeps for a few days after eating until full. It's gentle and only has the dragon as its enemy... wait is this an elephant, because I remember reading that elephants were traditionally considered enemies of dragons in stuff like this; probably not, but I might use some elephant elements in this (claws and tusks are similar enough in concept, even though they'd be familiar with tusks from non-elephant animals because boars). Its breath smells sweet, and it's followed by other animals because of that, so it either naturally produces alcohol or it's a Disney princess. There's three offspring per birth, and only one successful pregnancy per animal.
...I'm kind of curious about how some bits are "Pliny says", "Physiologus says", and other bits are just plain reported as fact. @maniculum, if you've already information somewhere on this (that isn't a spoiler), could you please link it to me; otherwise, if you feel like rambling about what things were just described and what things had an appeal to a source, and why, I'd be interested in reading it. (No rush; I'll likely forget about this approximately ten seconds after posting, so I won't notice a difference between "near-immediate response" and "response half a year later".)
Most of the other features can be played around with -- even "sharp claws" is only specified for the YOUNG, it could be one of those things that falls off or gets blunted with maturity -- but the description is very specific about the colour and patterning. There's prolly a couple different ways to interpret it, but I've enough of a cognitive load with "designing an entire-ass creature based solely on vibes", so I'll go with what to me is the most straight-forward interpretation: the narngreg's base colours are white and black, in some combination, then there's yellow over it, like someone took paint to a zebra.
Now, what could the black and white stuff be like.... I mentioned "zebra", but I'm ruling that out for the very good reason of "I don't want to have to draw all those stripes". Dalmatian-type spots wouldn't fit the phrasing; something like pinto would, though, where it's large splotches. Looked up "tapir" because I half-remembered something, and that's definitely some black and white colouring; very distinct, white starting just behind the shoulders, continuing towards the rump, then stopping above the hindlegs (I can't tell if the tail is included in that area or not, and I don't care enough to keep searching further). "Orca" is another option, which has the added benefit of a light underside which is a feature I just keep coming back to because it is pretty.
"Eye-shaped circles of yellow"... I don't want to draw something that would LITERALLY look like an eye, because that would freak me out, which is undesirable for any piece I intend to spend time working on. Could be something like, I think the marking's called a "rosette", on a cheetah or leopard (can't remember which one it is). Could be almond-shaped; or, upon rereading the description, it might be something where the yellow bits are small enough I don't have to give them any detail.
So that's my rambling for the moment; ended up getting a few things figured out, and some other things where at least I've written down the possibilities so I won't have to go about it from scratch. Next update will be once I've gotten enough worked out in my mind that I can at least draw some options.

Wild Kratts Episode Ideas
We made it another year. 2024, specifically, January 3rd, 2024, marks the 13th anniversary of Wild Kratts, which first aired in 2011 with Mom of a Croc. I remember first watching the bros as a toddler with Zoboomafoo, and I have grown up with Wild Kratts, from kindergarten to college. I owe the bros for opening my eyes to how amazing the creature world is. To celebrate, I wanted to share some episode ideas I came up with:
Fish Hacking 101: Chris and Martin desire to master the hunting techniques of the mysterious tentacled snake. But to Gourmand, the obscure serpent is just another ingredient for his latest dish.
Yetis and Leopards: To keep the bros away while they plan a surprise party, Aviva sends the bros looking for snow leopards. However, they find the mysterious cats much quicker than expected, forcing Aviva to keep the bros away from the Tortuga by baiting them with a Yeti robot she built, but snow leopards are great hunters.
Upriver With a Paddlefish: During Tortuga maintenance day, Koki goes kayaking, when she is hit by a jumping sturgeon. Injured and with her creature pod busted, the brothers find an unlikely hope in another strange looking fish.
Inferno the Fire Hawk: While visiting Australia, the crew observe a black kite intentionally setting fires. Paisley learns of this too, and hires Zach to mind control the birds into obeying her.
Dot and Stripe's Big Day: The crew have successfully rehabilitated a pair of orphaned Malayan tapir twins. But the spots the crew have chosen to release the siblings in have each been claimed by older, tougher tapirs. Aviva gives the bros Tapir powers so they can traverse the jungle and find new, suitable territory for the twins.
Ice Day for Salamanders: In the most ambitious experiment yet, the brothers freeze themselves alive in Siberian Salamander Powers for a day. However, Paisley abducts the brothers, intending to auction them off to the other villains to finance her schemes.
The Perfect Mudskipper Name: Martin's attempt to ride a mudskipper lead to him loosing his suit, and a mudskipper merging with it, like Seven did. The now humanoid fish kicks the gang out of the Tortuga, and all efforts to get him out of the ship and the suit fail. The brothers must learn to fight like a mudskipper to win their ship back, and get the fish back to normal.
Parrotfish Beach: While at the beach, Martin chances across a parrotfish. Not having seen one of the vibrant fish since they saved some from Zach and Donita, the team get to work to make a new suit. Meanwhile, Paisley has decided to create her newest road right through the reef, using a monstrosity of a machine she calls, "The Colossus of Roads".
Nudibranch Bingo: After finding a Blue Dragon Sea Slug, the brothers head to the Philippines in a game to see who can find the most species of sea slugs. Unbeknownst to them, Donita has hacked their cameras, so she can find and collect the colorful invertebrates to use in her newest designs, having grown bored of regular gems and jewels.
