Goombas Bite And Bunt
There is apparently an old interview with Miyamoto that talks about how when you bump into a Goomba in Super Mario Bros. and take damage, you are being bitten by the Goomba. The reason you don't see it is because of sprite limitation. The reason other games don't show it is basically they simply didn't animate it, and nobody was enforcing the depiction of this. However, there is some media that does depict this.
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, one of the attacks Goombas use is to bite you. While not canon to the games there is a scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie where Goomba is biting on another Goomba, a reference to this characteristic. Finally most recently in Super Mario Bros. Wonder when you run into Goombas an animation of them biting you plays.
Also, Goombas don't just try to bite Mario and friends, Goombas also charge at you as well. This can be seen in any 3D Mario game, and even in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser. Bowser's Minions actually calls attention to this. Captain Goomba: "I'm used to fighting Mario! For now...I'll just keep bashing!"
This is also why hypotheses that have Mario as evil and Goombas as completely harmless don't work, it contradicts was is established in canon.

"What's with that weird Goomba? Why's he got a flag on his head?!
Makes me wanna grab a golf club and go for a hole-in-one!
Foooore! Bahahaha!" ~
I got to this part of Minion Quest the other day and got the overwhelming urge to draw it.
Because in all honesty, a brief scene of Iggy chasing Captain Goomba (or any of the Captains for that matter) around with a golf club would've been hilarious XD

Representing Bowser's troops and championing their minion spirit, Captain Goomba, Captain Shy Guy, Captain Boo, and Captain Koopa Troopa ALL bring their minions to battle! These team-up formations may be strange, but shouldn't be underestimated.

I'm really sad a lot of people haven't played Minion Quest, because it really does have everything. It has:
Units (Bob-ombs) you can't use for grinding without losing your bonuses!
A silly cast with silly interactions!
The Elite Trio! Everyone who says they never appeared after Dream Team is wrong!
A UI that is theoretically navigable!
Starlow attempting to backdate her perfect attendance record! (now if only there was a remake of Partners in Time...)
Amiibo functionality!
Playable Prince Peasley.

BOWSERS MINIONS AND BOWSER JR'S JOURNEY ARE ACTUALLY GOOD!?
NOBODY TOLD ME!?
Ever since these remakes came out I've always heard "oh the stories are good but the gameplay is bad" these are genuinely really fun RTS games with a fair amount of depth
I'm playing through Bowsers minions right now and it's a blast! You play as a lowly Goomba and you have to fight to stop your fellow minions, including the koopalings from being brainwashed by fawful.
You have to pick out a formation of 8, and it runs on a weakness triangle. These 3 types, melee (like Goombas and Bob ombs) Flying (like Paragoombas and Lakitus) and ranged (like Hammer Bros and Shy guys, who throw Turnips)
The game is really fun! I feel like a general plotting out my troop's next attacks

Mario & Luigi as a series, loves its villains. I really can’t think of any other Mario series that gives its bad guys this level of attention and spotlight, as well as recurring appearances for several villains exclusive to the series.
While Fawful is an obvious example in regards to this, I’d actually say it’s none other than Bowser himself who really embodies all of this and manages to effectively be the third main character of the series, with a genuine arc to his name.
Bowser’s role in the series already starts out very uniquely. While he does start off wanting to kidnap Peach, as per usual, her now explosive voice makes her less than desirable to have around in his castle, so he promptly teams up with the Mario Bros, starting off Superstar Saga.
At this point in time, Bowser is a genuine ally, giving the Bros a ride to the Beanbean Kingdom and even giving them tutorial hints during their battle with Fawful, but things go downhill fast for the big guy.
From that point forward Bowser:
Ends up stuck in a cannon and held at ransom
Gets shot out of said cannon and suffers amnesia.
While amnesiac, becomes the rookie lackey of Popple, suffering two defeats at the hand of the Bros.
Takes another fall and lands back heavily injured in Stardust Fields, where Fawful and Cackletta find him, leading to the latter possessing his body. From this point, Bowser himself vanishes from the plot, aside from his body being rented out by Cackletta as a vessel.
Even once freed, he falls with the exploding Bowser Castle and when delivered back home, is just dropped off there.
Not much goes right for Bowser in SS, despite not taking an antagonistic role he ultimately ends up on the brunt of a ton of punishment and really is the one in need of saving from the big bad, once his body is taken over.
The Minion Quest side-mode in the 3DS remake does a little to expand on Bowser’s role in the game. We do get to see how he actually got his amnesia (Captain Goomba fell on him) and he gets a moment to fight back by knocking Fawful away, during an attempt to abduct him while unconscious.
That stuff is nice, but more than anything this game emphasizes an aspect of Bowser that will become important later on. The loyalty his minions have for him.
Putting the player into the viewpoint of a common Goomba does a lot to show how much Bowser’s minions think of him and how much they will band together to get their beloved ruler back. When Rookie Bowser fails to recognize Captain Goomba it really does make for a sad moment, that adds a sense of drama to Bowser’s role, which is otherwise largely played for laughs. Very fitting, given the change in viewpoint.
Partners in Time puts Bowser into a role that’s both unique and closer to what we expect from him, at the same time.
While his child self is a recurring nuisance that actively takes part in the plot at numerous points, adult Bowser is absolutely clueless about the greater plot going on. He shows up to kidnap Peach, who is actually Princess Shroob in disguise and lands in a time hole, never even realizing he’s time traveling.
Despite being locked out of the loop, Bowser does manage to make the most out of his role. He decides to turn the volcano in the past he fell into, into a new hide-out, teams up with his younger self, after some arguing and is able to emulate the team-work the Bros have with their younger selves, really well.
Following his boss fight, Bowser is kicked out of the past and by extension, the plot. He does reappear for a for a post-final boss encounter, but that one is not only over quickly, but also just pretty strange and doesn’t add anything to the story, though Bowser eating things he really shouldn’t, in this case, the mushroom-fied Elder Princess Shroob, will become important next game.
Bowser’s Inside Story just straight up is Bowser’s game. He may share the spotlight with the Bros, but on the whole, this is in very, very large amounts, his story. It also marks what I consider to be the big turning point in Bowser’s story in the series.
While Bowser falls victim to Fawful’s scheme, having his minions captured, his castle taken over and being given the Vacuum Mushroom to mindlessly inhale Peach and the Bros. That said, unlike Superstar Saga in particular, this time, Bowser fights back.
Bowser does need the help of the Bros, starting out without even his fire breath, but with that extra push, Bowser ends up recovering his lost abilities, gains new ones altogether and even learns to weaponize the new vacuum ability he got from Fawful’s mushroom.
We get to see Bowser be a brutish meathead, but he does manage to get himself out of problematic moments, if often with unknowing help from the Bros. Through this, Bowser reclaims his castle, fights through Fawful’s forces, survives what would otherwise be fatal moments and in the end, finishes off Dark Bowser with style.
I am not going too deeply into individual moments, because it is more the greater picture. Bowser went from an unlucky victim of the antics around him, to being out of the loop on what was going on, to one of the main stars, showing what he is capable of through his raw strength, ability to overcome whatever is thrown his way and the loyalty of his minions who upon rescue, assist him for his special moves.
The Jr’s Journey side-mode reinforces Bowser’s care for his minions we already got hints of, by showing that several Goombas of his kingdom suffer from the Blorbs and that him coming to the meeting at the beginning really was him wanting to take part in it.
Outside of that, the story is very disconnected from what Bowser is doing, being way more about Jr’s story and development. That said, what role he does have, along with how Jr and his troops refer to him, truly show Bowser to be the big good of his kingdom, building on what Minion Quest established.
We also do get the occasional check-in on when the stories take place relative to each other and those really do feel like getting a look at how Bowser’s antics look to minions and allies of his that aren’t directly involved in any given game.
Dream Team gives Bowser another entirely new role to play, this time teaming up with the new big bad of the day, Antasma.
I am going to say something maybe a bit contentious, but to me, Bowser in Dream Team is the best example of continuity anything in Mario has ever pulled off.
A lot of this is communicated really effectively through gameplay. In his first battle, Bowser’s moves include:
A sliding punch.
Him rolling up in a spikeball.
His usual fire breath.
And then much later in the game, we get a giant Bowser battle.
All of these are techniques that he learned through help of the Bros (Sliding Punch, Spikeball), recovered (Fire Breath) or was previously only able to pull off with their help (Giant Bowser) in BiS.
The Bros and by extension the player, has helped Bowser that whole time and powered him up. Now he’s a villain again and makes use of those new abilities to be YOUR problem to deal with. You helped create this monster.
And on top of gameplay examples, Bowser really shows how much he has learned on the story side of things too. He goes along with what Antasma does and gets a cool new castle out of it, which to me read like Antasma buttering Bowser up for an eventual betrayal.
Then one did indeed happen and it was Bowser betraying Antasma instead, having gotten everything he wanted out of him and thusly taking off with the Dream Stone to take charge all by himself.
I understand some didn’t vibe with this, because the RPGs are a rare time we get new villains. For me though, as someone who played all the RPGs, it was a really cool thing to see Bowser defy expectations and be the one overthrowing the new villain, without needing to be on the hero's side to do it. It’s a nice reminder he is the main villain of the franchise for a reason.
All this comes to a close with a boss battle against Dreamy Bowser. Bowser powered up to be able to summon whatever he wants and power up his usual abilities to a never before seen extreme.
The battle also gives some nice thematic pathos to both sides. Mario and Luigi for many of the attacks, are seen protecting each other or working together, while Bowser shows he thinks highly enough of his minions to summon dream versions of them to aid him. It genuinely really does feel like a true finale.
That sentiment also goes for another aspect of Bowser’s character in this series: Bowser’s dynamic with Luigi. Back in SS, Bowser barely even remembered him and even as the series went on, he’d always view him far more dismissively, never even calling him by name.
Dream Team gives Bowser and Luigi their most direct 1 on 1 confrontation (Yeah, Mario’s there, but he’s largely support) via their giant battle and through that and the final Dreamy Bowser battle, Bowser finally gains enough respect for Luigi as an enemy to recall his name.
Following all of this is Paper Jam. There are many things that can be discussed on how many aspects of it were handled, but strictly speaking Bowser, I think it’s a fitting conclusion to his arc in the Alphadream era.
After being kicked around, unaware of the plot around him, fighting the big bad and teaming up with the big bad, before backstabbing him, Bowser and his paper counterpart are just the villains outright, from start to finish.
While conceptually, much of what we see is fairly standard Bowser stuff, the context we see it in makes a big difference. Many call the new Neo Bowser Castle a lazy name and concept, but to me it again, stands as a good example of continuity. Unlike Dream Team, Bowser doesn’t need Antasma to get his sweet new castle, he just makes it himself through planning and ruthlessly capturing and enslaving Toads in mines to gather materials to fuel it.
Similarly, all it takes for Bowser to launch an attack on the kingdom following the Jr duo's defeat, is his own resources and the new final boss form of the day also doesn’t require a McGuffin of any sort. It just takes Paper Bowser going along with it.
Bowser pulls off all the stuff you’d expect from the Mario RPG villains with very little extra help. All he needs is the cooperation of another Bowser and together they stand tall as the main threat. I understand the circumstances around Paper Jam can muddle things, but to me, this is a really fitting and satisfying way to close out Bowser’s arc across all these games.
Time will tell what Brothership does with him. Given everything that happened I wouldn’t blame them if the game is seen as a bit of a relaunch and I have full confidence it will be a good role.
Mario games do whatever they want and I think Bowser’s progression has already concluded very well, so I am more than game to see them do more things with it.
This write-up is a companion piece to this video by my dear friend Mod Mamono, all about M&L villains, check it out here:

Gale talks: Worst to best: Mario and Luigi Villains
Rules:
I will be focusing on the Final/ Main villain of each game. So Spoilers if you havent played the Mario and Luigi games.
I will not be covering the Bowser jr. Journey or Minion quest. (Mainly cause the former are basically just minions anyway)
I will be rating each villain on the following categories. Effectiveness (How successful were they in their plots), Villainous (How evil are they actually?), Power (How strong are they in the grand scheme of things), Cunning. (How often did they outplay the heroes?), Intrigue, (How interesting is the villain on this list.) and lastly Presentation (How grand was their final battle).
Villains that ended up not becoming the final villain in the end can be considered for this list. If they were the main villain for a specific amount of time.
______________________________________________________________
9. Paper Bowser: Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam
Tumblr media
Now this is a shock to me as well, never would I have though of putting one of my favorite villains on this list. But this is not the Paper bowser from Paper Mario, Thousand year door, Or even Super Paper Mario.
This is Paper Bowser from Paper jam. And honestly he is basically the same as regular bower in the Mario and Luigi games... except he is a Flat interpretation. He is basically just Bowser but paper. He doesnt really get to shine or exceed the Original Bowser. In the end he gets worn like a suit by the original Bowser for the final battle. He does say he plans on betraying the OG bowser, but OG bowser says the same thing about him. So honestly... he is the lamest.
8. Cackletta/Bowletta: Mario and Luigi Superstar saga
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was surprised to put the First villain of the Mario and Luigi series so Low. But in all honesty. She hardly did anything. She did cause some chaos in the bean kingdom and tried to take the Bean star. But she was basically outplayed in nearly every aspect. And if it wasnt for her Minion, Fawful. She would have been down and out earlier. She needed to possess Bowser in order to be a legitimate threat. And her only smart play to outplay the heroes was her nasty bomb trick. She is higher on the list mainly because of her battle. But even a good battle cant save her from Mediocrity.
7. Princess Shroob: Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Tumblr media
Princess Shroob is the one that is causing most of the chaos within this game. She is the one we see ordering the attacks, and the one that helps reveal the word that the Shroobs have been saying. Destroy.
The Princess leads her forces to attack the kingdom and is arguably one of the most pure evil villains on this list. And the fight with her is actually pretty decent. Though she sadly loses points once you find out she wasnt actually the main one in charge. And then gets completely outclassed and outmatched by her sister
6. Antasma: Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
Tumblr media
In terms of asthetic and success, Antasma really does nail the feel and ambition of the final boss. It was his actions that basically messed with the Pi'illo kingdom and basically trapping them in the dream world. And his work with Bowser after obtaining the dreamstone had them set for not only conquering the kingdom but potentially the entire world.
Antasma is also one of the few villains that actually worked WITH bowser instead of just possessing him or tricking him in order to get what they wanted. Antasma though of Bowser as an equal. Which is also why he is lower on the list... because HE got betrayed by a better villain. And sad to say that this is where he must stay
5. Bowser: Mario and Luigi: (All of them but Bowser's Inside Story)
Tumblr media
(I picked this image because this was the one where he took the stage as the final boss without possession)
Bowser was the final boss in both Dream Team and Paper Jam. Where he took center stage. While in the previous games he was tricked or gets possessed. Bowser is always a fight in every game. Bowser shows himself as a powerhouse and is often used by OTHER villains as a means of attaining what they want. Every villain seem to have some level of respect for Bowser (even if they insult or belittle him). Regardless, while he is not the best villain. He is still one of my favorite characters in the franchise.
4. Zokket: Mario and Luigi: Brothership
Tumblr media
An enigmatic individual that is responsible for Concordia being divided. The one responsible for the Glohm being spread through out the kingdom. (Glohm being a dark energy that makes anyone effected to become isolated and bitter. Often making them evil and stronger).
Zokket is stoic and calculating. Often having everything planned and is often seen not remembering names (much to the chagrin on his minions the Extension Corps)
Zokket views all connections as pointless and wants to revive Reclusa as a means of permanently plunging the world into solitude. Though this would make Him a top tier villain on his own. The reveal of who they are ans what happened that made Zokket the way they are actually is what stops him from being higher.
(Spoilers)
ZOKKET is a brainwashed version of Connie's Mentor Ms. Cozette.
Reclusa, the final villain of the story managed to take hold of her and brainwash Cozette to the point of completely changing her personality into Zokket, and removing nearly every aspect of control from Cozette.
Meaning that all of Zokket's actions can be attributed to another villain, who is higher on this list.
3. Elder Princess Shroob: Mario and Luigi: Partner's In Time
Tumblr media
Now we get to the big 3. Elder Princess Shroob is everything that Princess Shroob was on steroids! She was seen as the bigger threat that Princess Peach was so horrified of her she passed out!
Elder Princess Shroob is also the final boss of the game and has multiple phases. While she was hardly in the story... her actions and presence were felt the entire time. And during the final battle she even commanded her soldiers to sacrifice themselves all in an attempt to destroy the Mario Brothers!
She doesnt value her kingdom, or her subjects. She only values one thing.
Destruction. And out off everyone on this list, she is arguably the most pure evil.
2. Reclusa: Mario and Luigi: Brothership
Tumblr media
This was a shock to me. I did not think I would ever put the new villain so high on this list. But Reclusa is absolutely vile and deserves this number 2 spot.
The most powerful being on this list. a being that is a mix between a computer virus and a mad demigod. Reclusa only wants one thing. To rule over everything and be completely alone.
Reclusa utilizes Glohm in order to isolate others so that they will be alone, and then He can do as he pleases.
His hatred of bonds comes from his inability to understand why anyone would WANT to have relationships or connections. He sees them as unproductive and hindrances.
Reclusa is absolutely vile, when using his powers to make a perfect dream world for everyone, not so they could be happy, but so they could be isolated and slowly DIE so that he can have everything for himself.
He basically WEAPONIZED the Black mercy from Justice League combined with the Infinite Tsukuyomi from Naruto shippuden just so he could rule the world.
What makes Reclusa interesting is how EFFECTIVE he is. He perfectly brainwashed Cozette, someone that was a Wattanist and valued her bonds to become Zokket, a being so against connections that they could weaponize Glohm.
Not to mention its revealed that this is not the first time Reclusa has conquered a world. Reclusa mentions having done this MULTIPLE TIMES. Almost as if an inevitable law.
Reclusa even manages to get SEVERAL over on the heroes and Mario Bros. If it wasnt for Connie and the manifestation of Bonds. Mario and Luigi would have fallen to Reclusa
But what makes him so high is the fact that He has a 5 stage fight. Making him the most comprehensive final boss in the Mario and Luigi series.
Plus his defeat is one of the most satisfying. It hard to argue he is the most cruel and evil. But is he the best villain? That goes to number one
1. Fawful: Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Tumblr media
Fawful is the best villain in the Mario and Luigi series.
He started out as a minion to Cackletta, before realizing that he was the one keeping her afloat. It was HIS genius that made her plans work. He was the one doing everything. So when he almost takes out the Mario brothers in the first game. Only to get sneaked attack by Prince Peasly. He vows vengence.
Fawful bides his time, and in Partners in time. We see what he is doing. Gathering funds and resources for his plan.
And by the third game. Fawful has made it to the big time. He created a disease to infect the kingdom. Tricked bowser into vacuuming up everyone that was a potential threat. Use his cunning to free the dark star. Had it absorb bowsers DNA, merged with it and created Dark Bowser. A being in which the Dark star was now under HIS complete control. He outsmarted the heroes and villains at EVERY TURN. His only failure was he didnt count on Mario, Luigi and Bowser to ever work together to win.
A being that was equal in power to Bowser,
Tumblr media
And was strong enough to envelop the ENTIRE WORLD IN DARKNESS.
Plus the final theme, and the final battle were the best in the series. And have yet to be topped.
It also potentially could go on forever if the player doesn't strategize properly.
Unlike other villains. Fawful started out small time, but he ended up becoming the Puppetmaster. He didnt serve the Darkstar, He merged with it and became its controller.
It took the combined effort of Mario, Luigi and Bowser to defeat Fawful. Something that no other villain ever managed to do in this series.
And even at the end. Fawful still went out on his terms. We still dont know if he is out there.
But something tells me that sinister bean is out there. Plotting, scheming, and Chortling.

going foward
hey there everyone! with another project down, i am gonna be swivelling most of my attention to my original comic, but, i dont want to stop posting here entirely, so i came up with a little solution!
after this post, i'll reblog some colour palettes, and edit the links into the bottom of this post, and people can send in a colour palette and a mario enemy/character if they so wish, for a little piece! this may be cell shaded, water coloured shaded, whatever im feeling like in that moment, i'll make the choice there
i am gonna lay out some parameters below though, since i havent played every mario game, and there's some charactes i just dont care to draw
i WILL draw (any exceptions will be listed in next section)
-almost every character/enemy/boss from any super mario game from new super mario bros ds, up to super mario wonder! -almost every character/enemy/boss from any mario and luigi game from superstar saga to dream team! (this includes minion quest!)
-almost every character/enemy/boss from super paper mario, or captain toads treasure tracker
-mario in any of his outfits from odyssey
-mario and luigi (and possible peach and toad) in any of their power up outfits from any of the games above! (eg cloud mario, fire luigi)
i WONT draw (/things im iffy about drawing)
-characters/bosses/enemies from games, havent played/didnt finish (that arent in other games). so ones unique to things like paper jam, sticker star, mario sunshine, etc
-how do i say this.....very basic mario characters that arent really in the main games ive played. stuff like...waluigi, wario, donkey kong or a basic toad or yoshi, or daisy (i know shes in wonder but again, not done yet kjgsndsjgkd)
-very complex designs, particular mech based. im doing this for a bit of fun/cool down in between full coloured and shaded comic scenes, so for example i dont particularly want to be drawing mecha wiggler or brobot lol. in general just keep in the complexity of the character design in mind before sending
also in general, i naturally have a right to not draw something if i dont feel like it kjgndgndj, but i will try my best!
i'll also pin this post to the top of the blog, so people can see!

Mario & Luigi: Brothership Announcement Trailer Analysis
Okay okay, I'm done with making gifs for right now. I still can't believe it's real. And releasing in November too.
As per usual, everything goes under a read more.
So first things first. The Brothership.
Tumblr media
It seems to be a floating island, and brings to mind the Starship Mario (the "Faceship") from Mario Galaxy 2.
At the front of the ship is the cannon, which the brothers use to launch to other islands, as you can see the sail and the cliffs behind it in this shot.
Tumblr media
I wonder if this means we'll get a slightly less linear adventure, since there's clearly a selection for islands using the telescope mounted to the cannon.
Tumblr media
If so, I wonder if it'll be a world map type thing, where completing an island gets you the path forward to more islands (Galaxy 2 style), or a central hub style, where you upgrade the ship to reach farther islands (Galaxy 1 style). It could go either way honestly, and there's not enough evidence either way to say yet.
What I do have evidence of, is the selection screen for different overworld Bros Moves! The Japanese trailer is very slightly different from the English one, and we get a much clearer view of the icons before they use the UFO spin one.
Tumblr media
So it seems that Bros. Ball is back! It doesn't quite look like Ball Hop from Dream Team, it has little speed lines, so I think it really is the version of the move from Partners in Time!
We can also see there's at least 1 more action yet to be unlocked. Maybe it's a burrow action?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of UI, there's a few shortcuts in the corner. Interestingly, the top two options, a thinking bubble and a golden pipe, don't appear in the middle screenshot, which may be from early game, given the low coin counts (2201 coins, 98 coins, and 476 coins respectively). A hint system, Return to Brothership, and your normal menu to adjust gear and use items perhaps?
Speaking of currency, there's 2 of them in the game.
Tumblr media
Seems like magic sparkles, and standard coins.
Tumblr media
Sparkles might be used to upgrade the ship? We see in other shots that Connie seems to be a gardener of sorts and the ship is partially organic.
Tumblr media
She has this seed or lightbulb shaped symbol on her head and there's other garden equipment here, like the trowel.
Speaking of important characters, Princess Peach being here is a fun surprise!
Tumblr media
It seems the the Princess also ended up in this otherworld too, but not at the same time as the brothers, as she's picked up her own crew, and Dorrie. I wonder if she'll join along on the Brothership once you find her, or if she has her own adventure during the course of the story (sort of like Minion Quest/Bowser Jr.'s Journey from the Superstar Saga and Bower's Inside Story remakes).
It's also interesting that Bowser's here. He might not be behind this plot if the princess is here, he's not one to go sending Peach to alternative dimensions. Maybe he's followed them here because the Princess disappeared.
Tumblr media
And perhaps a bit of fighting with the bros for good measure. It seems he fires upon the Brothership here, but he might not be working with the Extension Corps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They share the same electrical theming as the other NPCs we've seen so far and their plot seems to revolve around these odd generators, which we can also see in the pre-bossfight intro here.
Tumblr media
I suppose their plot might involve powering something. Or maybe they're taking something from these generators, given they seem to be spread out.
On the topic of battles though, either we get stat upgrades through food items, like the various coffees from Superstar Saga, or we get random rolls back (maybe both) because there's some variation in the stats of the bros at times between the JP and EN trailers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left is from the English video and right is from the Japanese one during the Headphone Jack Corp Boss. Which is odd, because every other part of the videos has tried its hardest to be identical save for the language change.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same deal for the Gorumbla boss. Left English, Right Japanese.
It just seems like a rather odd decision to do the boss on different levels for the video, so that's why I think the fluctuation is from random rolls. But there could still be a cooking system, as we have this shot of the brothers and they may be in a kitchen of sorts?
Tumblr media
I have other questions for the battle system too. We never see any battle action selection so it's hard to say in any particular way, but all the attacks we see seem to be duo attacks.
Tumblr media
This Hammer move has an extra effect, "Kaboom Attack" but I don't know if it's an effect of the Bros. attack (it'll always do this) or a special effect of an equipped hammer for instance (much like how you could equip gear that allows you to stomp on spiked foes or spawn a spike ball to do extra damage afterwards).
On the overworld, it seems like Luigi is the one to come up with ideas? The Exclamation mark that denotes Luigi interaction is slightly shaped like an L, both in the animation and in the overworld afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luigi retains this green glow whenever he's currently doing a Luigi action for lack of a better term.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It visually reminds me of Luiginary Works in Dream Team. I'm not sure if it's specifically a mechanic in the plot (Much like Dreamy Luigi was), or just a tool to show you Luigi is preoccupied.
(Also yes, Hammer on X and Y again, I missed that so much.)
Anyway rapid fire random thoughts before I stop.
Tumblr media
I like the Mario Odyssey inspired Mushroom Kingdom, with the towers around the main castle.
Tumblr media
I suppose the plot starts because they're just such good bros to each other, but that doesn't quite explain why Princess Peach and Bowser are here? I also don't see much involving this odd sparkle hand power outside the intro, but it just seems too important to ignore.
Tumblr media
I like the one off movement abilities, just like how you had climbing pipes in Superstar Saga or the bike pads/gonzola.

Note
It's kind of funny because I think everyone in the back of their mind sort of thought SMRPG was them testing the waters to see if Mario RPGs could still work, and if it succeeded we'd probably see Paper Mario return to form and Mario & Luigi return... period.
I never thought it'd happen in the *very next direct* though
Exactly! SMRPG seemed like such a big deal. To get the announcement of remakes of probably the most acclaimed Mario RPGs of a all time, in such short succession... it seemed unimaginable, after everything we'd come to expect in recent years. One of those times where you just have to bask in the glory of living in a decent enough timeline, for once.
Now we just need a Superstar Saga remake and- oh... (in all honesty, I wonder how much effort it would be to bring the existing one to Switch... would that be worth it? And I know Minion Quest's gameplay isn't to everyone's liking but I NEED MORE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT CAPTAIN GOOMBA OK)

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
January 28th is my birthday, dubbed Meimiday several years ago by my friends (I think it was hojo who started it). For those years, I would spend all day watching streams from said friends playing games for my birthday entertainment. Over a decade ago, however, when asked what I’d like to see I kinda just went “Why don’t you just beat some games?” and so the festivities truly began. Most of us frequent the Backloggery, so it’s kinda easy to see why it has snowballed~

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga's Placement
So there are some key details in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga that tells us it's placement in comparison to other games so I wanted to talk about it.
First of this game takes place after Super Mario 3D Land, this is because in Minion Quest we see the Big Tail Goomba, and Super Mario 3D Land is the first time Bowser gave his minions the Super Leaf.
Second this game takes place after Luigi's Mansion, this because E. Gadd invents the Super Poltergust 3001 whose predecessor is the Poltergust 3000. In addition the Portrait Ghosts make an appearance in Superstar Saga. Also, because of the Poltergust 4000 this would place Superstar Saga before Mario Kart DS.
Also, the Blocks Of Nostalgia room has blocks from Super Mario 64 and Paper Mario 64 in it, which are stated to be from Mario's past adventures. This places Superstar Saga after Super Mario 64 and Paper Mario 64 as well. But this is made more obvious by the next detail in it's placement.
In Minion Quest Bowser Junior is shown to be around at this time, this would place Superstar Saga taking place sometime after Super Mario Sunshine, and by extension would place Mario Kart 64 before Superstar Saga as well. Since Sunshine is Bowser Junior's debut and the first time Mario & Peach have met Junior..
Also, knowing New Super Mario Bros. DS takes place after Super Mario Sunshine, depending on the placement of the timeline, 3D Land could be the first time Bowser becomes Dry Bowser.
