1899 has such an eye-pleasing, pretty cast

THE RITUAL (2017)

A wild and spooky movie that really makes you ask how we get from point A to point B. The scenes of the creature stalking them through the woods are incredible and quite scary. You wouldn’t want to be lost in the forest with that thing hanging around. The movie didn’t really pop until near the end and doesn’t answer many questions though.

A group of friends are planning a boys trip when two (2) of the friends get involved in a burglary which ends up killing one (1) of the friends, cut to the remaining four (4) hiking in Sweden! Title screen. They all plan to do the hike in honor of their fallen friend, they even set up a nice little shrine for him. Things don’t go to plan as Dom gets hurt so they decide to cut back through the woods (literally off the beaten path) to try and get back to the lodge faster. This doesn't seem to be a problem as there were no creepy warnings or cryptic signs telling them not to go into the forest before this point. But if it was a shortcut why wouldn’t it be a path?

As soon as they get to the forest it is incredibly, eerily quiet. “Four twats in a forest.” They come across a dead elk hanging in the trees as if it was left there for them to find. One of the boys identifies that the thing in the trees is still bleeding, it is a fresh kill and they should get out of there fast. Then a terrible, horrible thunderstorm with pelting rain and they find their first symbol… and then an entire house in the woods. They break into the house for shelter from the rain and find more of the symbols inside the house, and even a creepy sacrificial statue looking thing in one of the rooms. They all wake up from having horrific night terrors and there are even more symbols carved on the trees surrounding the cabin.

They start to follow a random path that shows up after the storm. Phil and Luke wanna talk about the nightmares but the other boys don't want to. Dom is still hurting from his fall yesterday and this slows the group down, making Hutch angry.  Luke sees some big creature in the woods and tries to warn his friends but they are all fighting. It finally comes out that they (Dom at least) blames Luke for the death of the friend at the top of the movie and that's why they don't trust him. Poor Luke. They find the remains of a hiker's camping gear from the 80s (as dated from her credit card) which doesn't give them great hope about getting out or being found. Now Hutch is talking with Luke about sending Luke out to get help in the morning.

That night Luke hears the creature outside of his tent which seems like just a dream at first but he wakes up to the sound of screaming and it is no dream, Hutch is gone. It isn’t until the next day that they find Hutch strung up in the trees like the Elk. They take him down out of respect but it feels like he was left there specifically for them to find. The creature stalking them through the thick trees is amazing. It is just done in such a powerful way.

Phil is taken next, right before their eyes, so Dom and Luke hide. They run and break into another forest home where they get knocked out and captured. The captors beat up Dom for no real reason then bring him back before taking him away again to be sacrificed. Luke is told he (Luke) will undergo The Ritual and become part of this cult that worships this demigod, this son of Loki, but Luke isn't quite buying in. After Dom is sacrificed, Luke is able to get free and he burns the place down but first he finds the worship room which is creepy as all get out, shriveled up beings who had previously been chanting, yuck. Luke lights them all up but this angers the beast, it finally comes forward and we see it for what it is.

The design on the creature is stunning, it was the main reason I decided to watch the film, I had seen some images of the giant stag like fiend and knew I needed to see it in full. My biggest question about it is where it’s mouth is, where the noises it makes are coming from. It is such a fearsome beast and it’s face is an enigma and I loved it so very much. Amazing design aside, the creature comes for Luke who shoots at it (which felt kind of dumb but also very brave). The chase begins, don’t ask how Luke is able to beat this thing because it is a wonder to me as well, either way we get more shots of how stunning the beast is before Luke is able to break the tree line and… Looks like Luke will be okay because Loki’s son can't leave the forest. I just wonder what he said to the lodge when they asked him what happened to him and the rest of his party. Yikes.

Spotlighting the best work on The Book Of Carol

There are a lot of men involved in the spin-off who I am not proud of. But I just want to pay special attention to and highlight some of the people who I think thoroughly deserve our love and so much praise.

- Melissa McBride (Carol)

- Clémence Poésy (Isabelle)

- Anne Charrier (Genet)

- Manish Dayal (Ash)

- Laïka Blanc-Francard (Sylvie)

- Romain Levi (Codron)

- Eriq Ebouaney (Fallou)

- Maria Erwolter (Hanna - one of the women in Greenland in episode 2)

- Minami (Eun - one of the women in Greenland in episode 2)

- Luker'ya Il'yashenko (Anne)

- The actress who plays a new French character in episode 6 (Unfortunately, I haven't found her or her character's name yet, and I can't say the role she plays yet bc that would be a spoiler, but I'll update here when I can.)

- The girl who plays the hallucination of Sophia (I'm sorry I couldn't find her name - if anyone knows, please comment it)*

To me, all of these cast members showcased incredible work, and that's despite working with a lacking and sometimes offensive script. I'm proud of all of them. And to amplify them and their work even more, I might write independent posts for each of them, at some point, about why I think their work was so valuable.
