A Glance At A Very Big Newsreader Secret! 🌟📺
(And happy birthday to our leading man Sam Reid too! Hoping he has had a beautiful day today, from Newsreader fans everywhere. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality on the day, Sam! 💖🤴🏼)
.
.

In one of my first posts I did after revealing my very special Newsreader experience, I spoke briefly of how all the televisions in the office functioned; through each of them being wired to a control centre feeding the footage to them. This control centre is in fact a secret room, which is hidden in between the walls of Dale and Lindsay’s offices, behind the whiteboard. This room is never seen on camera and has been concealed from audiences, until today!

In a News At Six 1986 exclusive, I am inviting you into the walls of the hidden control room! When Michael Lucas led Mum and I into Dale’s office, I was astonished to see one of the walls open, and a dark room inside. What was this magical and mysterious sorcery! A lovely bloke greeted us, and welcomed us inside. Lining one wall was tables covered in laptops, with cords going every which way, and each laptop was playing all sorts of footage.

You might recognise the clip of Helen furthest away. This was the bulletin she did in S03E03 as she broke the news of the Tiananmen Square massacre on Public Eye. This was played on the laptop, then fed to the televisions above the whiteboard. We get a good glimpse of this clip in the scene, as Dale watches it with a mixture of frustration and awe.

It was so cool not only getting to see this scene being filmed, but also getting a very early sneak peek into Helen’s Public Eye programme too, and being invited into this secret space. Looks like the secret is out now! I hope you all are just as awestruck by having this knowledge now, as I am too. It really has added another layer to my understanding of how this show comes together from a technical perspective. It’s truly such a clever show all around!

Was rewatching the QOTD movie yesterday (because i don't know what's good for me) and look who it is!

Another nice Vampire Chronicles/The Newsreader connection: Marg Downey, who plays Evelyn Walters in The Newsreader, also has a small part as a Talamascan in QOTD.
QOTD was filmed in the Melbourne area so most of the small parts and extras were Australian. Sam has said that his love of the Vampire Chronicles was prompted by this production shooting near him when he was a kid.
I just think it's a sweet little detail.

OMG! I'm such an idiot! I've been watching The Newsreader since it started, and I only JUST twigged that Marg Downey is, well, Marg Downey!! XD
I was just like 'oh, yeah, I've seen her in a bunch of other Australian stuff' but didn't somehow twig that 'other Australian stuff' was many iconic Australian comedies that I grew up with! Lmao
It's especially embarrassing because more than one of her characters was a TV presenter 🤣
#i watched fast forward ALL the time#not to mention everything else#how????? how did my brain not make that connection???#maybe because she's SO serious as evelyn??#the newsreader#oh i feel so so stupid lolllll#(tbf i was like 6 when fast forward ended)#(BUT STILL!)#lazzarella watches tv

Finally watched Queen of the Damned and it was as bad as everyone says it is. One cool thing tho was that I noticed that Marg Downey who plays Evelyn in The Newsreader shows up in the movie as a Talamascan. Small world.
Also loved Jesse’s vampire bar fit. The space buns were very cute.
And of course Aaliyah, who has a minimal amount of time on screen. RIP.

I keep saying it, everyone, I am an unashamed Evelyn Walters apologist and adore her to bits, even though she's so conniving! Out of all the cast of The Newsreader I fangirl over Marg's work the most and she is the most sentimental to me as I've grown up with her on my screen since I was a child. She is a legend of Australian comedy television and helped pave the way for women in comedy television here in Australia. And yep, if they ever did another Ita biopic Marg should be her! 💖🌟📺🇦🇺👸🏼
One character in The Newsreader I kept snickering at was Evelyn.

First of all, I love how "congrats, darl, you played yourself" her plans turn out to be in the end. And I can't wait to see how she continues to screw herself over this season.
Secondly, this is Marg Downey... aka Marion the sex therapist from Kath & Kim... so this was a pleasant surprise, seeing her in a role like this! I love Marg, so this was great.
Thirdly, tell me she wouldn't make a great Ita Buttrose if they ever did a biopic show/film about Ita!

(this ^^ is Ita btw)
Cos all I could think whenever Marg was on-screen was "holy crap, Ita??" 😂

okay so, maybe I have a thing for actors who peck lips with their co-stars.
Like:
Robert Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow
(there's actually better picture in Iron Man 3 premier - this was in 2012 Iron Man 2 premiere)
and I KNOW they're friends, but it came to me, that some co-stars, mostly actor and actresses, do peck the lips of their colegues, like those they consider VERY MUCH, also the other person must be comfortable, OF COURSE!
Also, is super cute, they indeed are a couple in the movies <3
ALSO, do you guys remember when Gwyneth said RDJ was her worst kiss ever, cos it was like kissing a brother? LOL
okay, moving on...
Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen
Okay, Philinda is perfect, and we all already know that, BUT Clark and Ming would make a power couple too, right?
She's still happily married tho, and the moment this video was recorded, so was Gregg, so yeah...
they're also a couple - sorta - in the Agents of SHIELD series and yet another Marvel (okay what's with those Marvel ppl and their pecks?)
anyway, both Ming and Clark are philinda supporters, they even gave interviews saying so, you can google it if you wanna.
I love their dynamic, and in any way, I want them to run away together in real life, I'm just showing you guys that it's kinda natural, this chimestry they have.
last, but defintely not least:
William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger

I'll probably remember more ppl over the week and come edit this post, but PLEASE this us just for fun and cos I find curious those pair would greet each other like this, being married and all, I mean they're artists, and those are by definition, excentric... maybe is a culturl thing too
A lot like GP and RDJ, Marg and Billy are the "let's have lunch/ dinner together even if we're not working together anymore" kind of friendship!
there's LOTS of videos of them on youtube kissing in various occasions, even though in CSI they're good old friends!
even though, they're my ship in the series (I'm a sucker for friends to lovers cliche)
ight? I'll probably remember more ppl over the week and come edit this post, but PLEASE this us just for fun and cos I find curious those pair would greet each other like this, being married and all, I mean they're artists, and those are by definition, excentric... maybe is a cultural thing too, right?
lemme know whatcha think!!!

Helen Norville - A Woman Who Can Laugh! Even at herself! 😉
.
.
Who else cannot stop smiling watching Helen watch a comedian parody her on the telly? Her cackles were so joyous and infectious, and demonstrates the good humoured nature, when she’s in the mental health headspace to support it.

Helen’s impressionist is played by Nicolette Minster, and didn’t Nicolette give it her all! She nailed Helen’s on-camera brashness and exaggerated Helen’s volatility to the extreme, which thankfully Helen was flattered and delighted by!

The late 1980s and early 1990s was an incredible period of time for women on Australian comedy television, lovingly parodying other women in the media. Over at The Big Gig on the ABC, Jean Kittson brought to life her character of Veronica Glenhuntly; very clearly inspired by the ABC newsreader Mary Delahunty. Some of Nicolette’s body language whilst playing Helen also reminds me of Jean’s very wild and loose flight attendant character too. I met Jean in 2018 at my local library!

Turn over to Fast Forward on Seven, and a certain actress was doing her lions share of female media personality parodies; Ms Marg Downey, our very own Evelyn Walters! Marg was a small screen star during this time, and a household name. Her hilariously deadpanned performances as the SBS Lady demonstrated just what an extraordinary talent she is. As each season went along, the SBS Lady’s movements became more stiff, to the point where Marg wouldn’t even blink.

Throughout her time on Fast Forward and The D Generation, she also parodied journalist Jana Wendt. The drawl of her voice, the hand up to her cheek and the tilt of her head made her look and sound frightfully like Ms Wendt. In a 60 Minutes piece from 1989, Mike Munro showed Wendt Marg’s impersonation, and Ms Wendt was that impressed that she gave Marg a rating of a “good solid eight and a half” out of ten! Looks like our Marg was a talent to be reckoned with even in the real 1980s!
Have you seen Marg’s impression of Jana Wendt? If you haven’t, treat yourself to a viewing session on YouTube and see for yourself how incredible Marg has always been!
