🏁 Music player : The bones by Maren Morris & Hozier
Tumblr media
“Mon amour, have you seen my sweatshirt?” Your fiancé’s voice rung throughout your shared apartment as you stacked the damp plates into the washing machine. The odd clunking of you organising dishes continued as he rushed out of the bedroom passing by the kitchen, where you worked, and towards his office.
“Which one?” You called back, drying your hands on the pale green washcloth that hung from the fitted hook above the sink, the new one! “No, I haven’t seen it, baby, you come back with new sweatshirts every week, just wear another one?” You offered helpfully, bending down towards the indented shelfs within the breakfast bar to grab new hand towels, wanting to replace the one’s that hung, used and abused in the bathrooms.
“But that one is important.” A worrying thud emitted from the home office, which was soon followed by a deep groan from Charles.
You hummed in support, stacking the fluffy white towels in your hands, “Why is it so important?” because! “Because what?” Leaning down to the scented fabric in your grasp, you take a large breath in, enjoying the strawberry scent that emitted from them.
“It just is,” He whined in reply, emerging from the room he had left in disarray whilst rubbing the back of his head, hissing as he pulled his fingers back to check for blood, “Why is my desk so low?”
“I don’t know my love, I warned you when you had bought it in the first place,” You scurry away from the kitchen, wanting to avoid his assessing gaze, lest he find out where his new sweatshirt really was, “Aren’t you just going to Max’s place? Why do you need it?”
“Because he wanted to see- hey...” He cuts himself off with a suspicious lilt in his voice, you try to speed up your efforts seeing the glinting metallic handle of the bathroom waiting for you to escape into, “Amour...” His voice is accusatory but amused, as if he appreciates your efforts to evade him.
“What? Charles I really need to get the chores done; I only have this weekend.” You turn around slowly and watch him approach you, his eyes crinkled with affection. Busted.
“Baby, why do you have my new sweatshirt?” He reaches out to tuck a stray hair behind your ear before resting his hand on your cheek, caressing it with the pad of his thumb.
“’Cause,” You mumble, fiddling with the tag of one of the towels cradled on your chest, “It’s nice,” You shrug, feeling your cheeks burn with embarrassment.
Even after six years, you found in hard to admit such things to Charles, despite his kind eyes and cute dimples. Emotional affection was hard to extract from your dark, stony heart, so such pitiful attempts at it, such as stealing his sweatshirt and admitting why you did it, was completely out of the question.
“it’s nice?” He cocks his head, like a small puppy waiting for a treat, “I still need it baby, you can have any other one of mine,” He smiles kindly at you, eyebrow arching sympathetically when he feels you bite on the inside of your cheek.
“Of course, amour,” You clear your throat, pushing the stack of toiletries into his chest, before writhing out of the sweater and pulling it over your head, not caring if more odd chunks of your hair had fallen out of the claw clip you had carelessly attached to the strands, “Sorry.”
“It’s okay, Mon ange,” He chuckles when you huff and swap out the items in his hands for the sweater, “I’ll be back in an hour or so, d'accord?” He slips on the article, pulling at the sleeves and adjusting the hood, then taking your face in his palms once again to pull you closer and press his lips against your forehead.
You hum, leaning into his touch, “À toute à l'heure,” You mutter, twisting your head so that you can peck the inside of his hand.
Truthfully, you wanted to jump on his back and order that he take you with him, not wanting to feel the absence of his sunny presence. But you were aware how much he valued his time with his friends, despite his many objections to your conclusion, so reluctantly you waited until you heard the muted click of the electronic lock of the front door before you continued to re-set your beloved home.
Tumblr media
“Je suis à la maison mon amour!” Charles calls out, toeing off his shoes by the door before walking further into the apartment.
“I’m over here!” You call out from your own office, the door slightly ajar, you hear him hum before the tell-tale squeak of the hinges to the foyer bathroom screeches through the hallway, followed by the kitchen tap running. Soon enough, he stepped into the carpeted area of your office, setting down the tall glass of water and a singular pill.
“For your headache mon ange,” He came behind your chair, resting his chin on your shoulder whilst running his hand through your damp hair.
Though to most, it would seem that Charles was being your lovable drug dealer, always managing to drop the singular brightly coloured pill to the side of you whilst petting your head wistfully. When in fact, he knew that after an hour or two of working, your temples would begin to throb mercilessly and you required your prescription, that many were not aware of.
You relaxed in his embrace, your once pin straight spine became slack and your clenched jaw felt numb with his attention, “Thank you, baby.” You twisted your neck, pressing your lips against the scruff on his cheek.
“Are you wearing another one of my sweaters?” He asked, pulling away to rotate your spinning chair so that he could step back and asses your outfit, long black flare leggings with another one of his sweaters. This one, he had ordered from a fan’s etsy account, a large grey body with a small, illustrated version of this season’s current car along with his autograph and name, printed below it.
“You said that I could,” You mumbled inwardly, pulling at the long drawstring that lay on your chest, “I’m not taking it off,” You pouted, tucking your knees beneath fabric so that only your head and red painted toes were visible from beneath the hem.
“And you don’t have to,” He pinched your cheek adoringly, coming to his knees in front of you, so that you were looking down at him from your “dough-ball” position, “But I had bought you a matching one to this, wouldn’t it be easier to just, wear that one? Juste?”
You pushed your mouth into the collar of your sweatshirt, your answer muffled by the thick fabric.
“What was the ange?” Charlese brings his ear closer to your mouth, or what would be your mouth if you would bring it out of your clothes.
“Smells like you…” You admit, eyes wide and unblinking as you wait for Charles to pull away, most likely thinking that you’re weird.
“It does?” He moves his head lower, sniffing the hoodie, “I don’t think so?”
“Yeah, well obviously you don’t think so!” You exclaim, allowing your legs to fall out of the hoodie and popping your mouth out once again. He widens his eyes at your outburst, taking in your teary lashes and wobbling lip, “Baby...”
“I only wear your stuff because I know that you’re busy…” You admit, looking away from his annoyingly understanding expression, “I’m not your only priority and this way-“ you move your arms up, showing off the baggy attire, “I can be close to you even when you don’t necessarily want to be close to me.” You conclude, wrapping your oversized arms around your torso, “And for the record, you smell like caramel and copper.” You add haughtily, up turning your nose.
“Really?” He asks innocently. You nod, one choppy movement before you harrumph and look away from his entertained face.
“Baby. you’re right, you aren’t my only priority. But you’re my first priority. And who said I don’t want to be with you?” He pats your knee, signalling for you to stand so that he can wrap his hands around your waist, pulling you into his chest, “I love you, my baby, and I’m sorry that you had to resort to wearing my clothes instead of just asking me to stay with you.” He kisses the crown of your head, inhaling the pungent smell of your cranberry conditioner.
“I don’t want you to feel bad!” You pull away from him, scrunching your nose at his guilty expression, “I like your clothes, they’re comfortable and I can’t possibly ask you to stay with me 24/7?”
“You can!” He insists, squeezing you ardently, “You’re my fiancé, and about to be my wife, you’re meant to be able to ask me. Because I will always say yes. No matter what.”
“Charles...”
“Amour” He mimics your scolding tone.
“You’re so busy my love, I can’t do that.” You nuzzle your head into his chest, making him laugh at your antics.
“You can-“ He takes your cheeks in his hands, squeezing them together so that your lips pucker comically, he leans down to leave a wet kiss on your lips, “-and if I don’t get such demands from you, I will be very sad.” He pouts down at you.
You sigh, “hmkay.” You manage to speak through your forced pucker, furrowing your brows with concentration. You knew he was merely humouring you, cajoling you like a child so that you would do as he asked, but hey, it was a good enough reason to do exactly what you wanted.
“Mia dolce bambina, così adorabile, non vedo l'ora che tu diventi mia moglie, forse allora non ti sentirai in colpa per avermi dedicato il mio tempo.” He continues to press his lips against yours, making you giggle.
“charmles, too much ithalian,” You lisp through your cheeks whilst squeezing your eyes together, accepting his affection happily.
“Too much Italian? In quale altro modo potrei dirti quanto voglio che tu occupi tutto il mio tempo senza che tu ti allontani da me? Mia timida bambolina, continuerò a ricoprirti del mio amore finché non potrai accettarlo in abbondanza."He grins at you cheekily, watching as you translate it slowly in your mind.
“Babe...” You whine, managing to wriggle free from his grip on your cheeks to hide your face in the crook of his neck whilst wrapping your forearms around him.
“You can have all of my sweatshirts baby, and all of me” He whispers, raking his hands through your hair.
“I love you,” You breathe out in reply, kissing the skin on his neck.
“I love you too.”

Songfic Tag Game
Tagged by @theluckywizard, thank you! 💕
Rules: Pick a song to accompany each of your fics or as many as you like. This might be the fic's inspiration or just pure vibes that you'd like to share with readers. Tag as many people as fics you feature (or do as you please!)
Tagging @ir0n-angel, @lilbittymonster, @fadedsweater, @natsora, @serial-chillr and anyone else who wants to play. No pressure!
Now, I don't usually have musically inspired stuff, just generally speaking. BUT, there are exceptions. These are all Dragon Age.
We'll start with the most obvious:
What a Wicked Game to Play - ~412K words, rated E, complete
My epic, sprawling Solas/MGIT fic. The title comes from Wicked Game, specifically the Ursine Vulpine version. It's slow and kinda sad and powerful and informed a fair amount of the theme for WG as I was writing it.
Next we have:
Twist - ~197K words, rated E, complete
Also Solas/MGIT, but Carly was 'translated' into a Lavellan body. For a long time this pairing had no particular song that made me think of them, but then I heard The Bones, by Maren Morris. And I remember looking at Lamb the Younger in excitement and saying I'd found the perfect foundation for Carly and Solas.
And finally:
No More My Heart Beats Without You - 5,555 words, rated E, 'ware the tags
I wrote this tragic Solas/Trevelyan oneshot with Borders, by Kalandra on a loop. Are they at all relevant to each other, theme wise? Nope, but the song inspired a very specific mood and it was perfect for what I wanted. I have since used this song as a backdrop to put me in that mood every time I need it.

🎵 i have to do it for our girl riza 😌
shameless self-promo but the first song I have about our best girl riza is a WIP -- I recorded a very sloppy demo acapella here and am still toying around with the chorus, but I'm quite happy with how the lyrics turned out so far :)
I was waiting for change / in that same old spot when the midnight train / brought you to the porch
A rose garden, snowed under by any other name, and I
came to you like a moth to flame never knowing dust would be our end
But in this dream, we were bending time carved our names in the fading light and you were once more, and hence forth, forever mine And in this dream, you were shimmering Aurora in spring, chasing brass rings wasn't worth our weight in gold
verse 2 (unrecorded) goes something like:
Now I sit and weep before stone-faced graves Haunted by the weight of unwanted legacies Mother used to warn me of beautiful fools I should've known you were one too But I choked on pearls of wisdom And turned in a kingdom / just to flirt with freedom
the bit in bold is supposed to be Riza's response to an old song I wrote from Roy's perspective (this time/old-time lovers), where the chorus goes: but I promise I'll be a better man, be a bit less of a fool, someone wise / this time, I'd like to make you mine (except Riza has the discernment to know that they can only exist as lovers in a dream ahahaha I feel like Roy would have a harder time reigning his desire because he's just so passionate about every single thing, probably about carrots as well).
----
on to the actual playlist!!! to nobody's surprise, dr. swift features heavily:
(1) You All Over Me - Taylor Swift feat. Maren Morris) (2) Dreams Tonite - Alvvays (3) The Great War - Taylor Swift (4) epiphany - Taylor Swift (5) Time Lapse - Taeyeon (this is a Korean song but the English translation of the lyrics cut so deep aaaahhhh)

FAVORITE SONGS OF 2021: PART I
The 2020s started off with such a bang, so I was enthusiastic about what 2021 had to bring. Honestly, I wasn’t disappointed at all, though there weren’t as many significant highlights like last year, I still managed to make my list of favorites longer than it has ever been for other years. This year, I actually aimed for 100, but somehow ended up with 85 songs with 15 honorable mentions instead. Don’t question it, just accept the chaos that is me.
These songs are purely based on how much I’ve personally enjoyed them and listened to them, not necessarily objective quality or critical acclaim. This is purely the fact that I just vibe with them.
#85: Potential Breakup Song (Explicit) - Aly & AJ
Tumblr media
I knew 2021 would be a good year when this was released at the beginning of this year. What a way to bring back a song from Disney Channel’s prime era and make it explicit as well? This was one of the best moves Aly & AJ could’ve pulled, because nostalgia sells. At least it does for me.
Favorite lyrics: “Now all I want is just my stuff back / Do you get that? Let me repeat that / I want my shit back.”
#84: Ut Av Mørket - TIX
Tumblr media
No, I don’t mean “Fallen Angel”. I mean UT AV MØRKET. I wasn’t a huge fan of this the first time I heard this. I thought the lyrics were clunky (they still are) and basic, but the message and theme itself was good enough for me to keep an open mind about it. The more I listened to it, the more I fell in love with it. This is one of the examples that prove that lyrics aren’t always that important as long as it’s catchy, has a captive melody and a good enough production, and this song has it. Now, here comes the beef I had about this whole business. If you didn’t know, this song was Norway’s entry for Eurovision this year, and when TIX entered the Norwegian finale prior to winning, he entered it with this song--the Norwegian version. Before the Norwegian finale, he decided to translate his song to English because if he were to win, it would give him an advance in Eurovision. First of all, I think that’s a stupid move, considering a non-English song won this year. Secondly, the lyrics got worse in English. Like, much worse. And people who don’t speak Norwegian will never know. So, because of that, I grew even more fond of this specific version, as it will be known as the much better version who got away.
Favorite lyrics: “Jeg tenker fortsatt på alt jeg egentlig ville si til deg, men aldri får sagt.” (”I’m still thinking about all the things I really wanted to say to you, but never get to say.”)
#83: Why You No Love Me - John Mayer
Tumblr media
... Listen. I know John Mayer, okay? Not like personally know, but I know him as an artist and the personality he portrays for the public. And when I listened to this album (Sob Rock) for the first time, this song was the only one that truly stood out to me. It wasn’t until I went on the Internet and found out that everybody hates this song before I was like...oh.... am I not supposed to? But eff that! This song sounds like one of those cheesy 80s rock ballads that is emotionally packed for no reason, and I’m a sucker for songs like that. So, sonically, it hits. Now, the chorus. I know he didn’t write that being 100% serious about it, and that’s why I love it. I love that he’s confident enough to put baby language in a song and make a genuine track out of it. And getting Maren Morris to back him up too? Genius. Imagine Maren Morris in the studio going “why you no love me? :(”. Absolutely amazing. Also, if you’re one of those people who think “why doesn’t he just say “why don’t you love me” instead of “why you no love me”?”, you’re missing the point.
Favorite lyrics: “Hurt me once, I let it be / Hurt me twice, you're dead to me / Three times makes you family” (ooooooof)
(I know you’re questioning my taste so far. Bear with me.)
#82: Skin - Sabrina Carpenter
Tumblr media
Sabrina releasing a response to “drivers license” only two weeks after its release and during its massive rise was an extremely bold choice. Likely, it was to ride on the PR that would come with it, but it devastatingly backfired. I love Sabrina, and I’ve been riding hard for her for years, so seeing her being dragged through the mud after Olivia’s breakout hit hurt me to see. Was it too harsh and too soon? Maybe. Would it do better if it was released later, like Joshua did? I don’t really think so either. As a fan, I really enjoyed this song. It gives off the exact vibe I’d expect from the role she played in the whole PR drama; the older, wiser girl who got involuntarily dragged into the fire purely for dating the guy “drivers license” was about and is just trying to be above it. I really hope that she didn’t let any of the backlash under her skin, because it took Olivia (bless her heart) way too long to address it, and some people were... vile. Sabrina Carpenter deserves the world and beyond. Also, with Joshua Bassett’s new songs coming out, it’s very interesting that both of them mention that the truth has been twisted in some way or another... The tea is scalding.
Favorite lyrics: “I just hope that one day we both can laugh about it / When it's not in our face / Won't have to dance around it.”
#81: Only a Matter of Time - Joshua Bassett
Tumblr media
While we’re on it... Joshua has proven from time and time again that he is a solid songwriter. Is he a unique one? Not really, but he brings his own flair and his voice is easily recognizable. Unfortunately, this song also fell in the shadows of Olivia’s rocket spurt to success, but it remained on my rotation for most of this year. The song is very straight-forward - the production is minimal; his voice and some piano chords are the main attractions of the track. Initially, I wasn’t that big on him releasing yet another song which had the exact same theme and message as his first 2021 release “Lie Lie Lie”, but I ultimately found myself drawn to this simplistic, but effective ballad. Also, falsetto chorus? Sold.
Favorite lyrics: “I'm sure that you're hurting inside, but why would you make your pain mine?”
#80: family ties (with Kendrick Lamar) - Baby Keem
Tumblr media
I’m sure this song would be higher if I hadn’t discovered this... four weeks ago. I’m only a casual hip-hop listener, so when it hits, it really hits. The beat is simply addicting and the flow is solid. This track will definitely follow with me into 2022, and I’ll even check out Baby Keem’s other stuff. If it’s anything like this, then I am on board.
Favorite lyrics: “New flows comin', be patient, brother / Show my ass and take y'all to class / I can multitask like Megan, brother”
#79: cup of tea - Paria
Tumblr media
This song is perfectly titled because it is the music version of a cup of tea. Paria’s lovely voice with the acoustic guitar plucking in an ethereal production just makes this song so dreamy and relaxing. Surprisingly enough, I have not listened to this song while drinking tea, but remind me to do so next time.
Favorite lyrics: “I don’t have a lot to offer, a cup of tea with honey and my heart, would that be alright?”
#78: The Motto - Tiësto & Ava Max
Tumblr media
Tiësto just makes the perfect gym songs, and this is no exception. Do you need 2 minutes and 45 seconds of not having a care in the world and feel like a bad bish? This song will do the trick. Walking down the street, hitting the treadmill, blasting it during a one-woman party (because why would you host parties in a pandemic, pls) - it elevates your confidence every single time.
Favorite lyrics: “We been up all damn summer / Makin' that bread and butter.”  (idk this song doesn’t have any lyrics that mean anything so I just picked what I think sounds cool)
#77: Reckless - Madison Beer
Tumblr media
This song is a great example of a song that still can be great despite being unoriginal. I realize that sounds like I’m dragging Madison Beer, but I’m really not. It does use one of the most common chord progressions, however, and the melody follows the progression very closely, so it sounds like a bunch of other songs because of that. But, this chord progression--especially with the use of the minor third as the transition to the chorus (my favorite pop music trope!!)--is so magical and effective, particularly when it’s used on a song made to show vulnerability. Madison’s voice is emotional and fragile, and the lyrics are direct and compliment the melody well.
Favorite lyrics: “Hey, this is a story I hate, but I told it to cope with the pain / I'm so sorry if you can relate.”
#76: love nwantiti (ah ah ah) - CKay
Tumblr media
The chokehold TikTok has had on music this past year and a half has been insane. Like, imagine having one song blow up on TikTok and you’re basically set for life. Anyway, I usually don’t really get that into songs that went viral purely due to TikTok (songs by already massive, famous artists don’t count as a viral TikTok hit for me), but the more this song came up on my feed, the more I found myself really enjoying it. It has this calming effect while being danceable, two traits a song rarely can pull off. And I just found out that this song came out in 2019... but I’m going to pretend I didn’t see that.
Favorite lyrics: “Without you, I go fit lose my mind / Without you, I go fit fall and die / Without you, I go give all my life”
#75: la di die (feat. jxden) - Nessa Barrett
Tumblr media
I wasn’t expecting to have a TikTok star’s song on my list this year (although I was this close to putting Dixie D’Amelio on the list as well... no joke), but I wasn’t expecting a TikTok star to drop a 2000s inspired emo track, either!! This song feels both nostalgic and new all at the same time, like I definitely heard this before but it doesn’t really sound like it’s an old song. Okay, maybe a little, but not really. Compared to those who actually identified as emo kids back in the day, I didn’t listen all that much to emo rock, but I’m so glad it was revived in the mainstream this year.
Favorite lyrics: “My depression and misconceptions / And all the mistakes that lead to lessons”
#74: Undo (Back To My Heart) - Tinashe, Wax Motif
Tumblr media
This was one of the songs that just stuck immediately after first listen, and I can’t explain how much I love it when that happens. Sometimes it’s just tiring to have to listen to a song several times before you’re like, “okay, this is kinda good”, right? Definitely a standout from the album 333, X being a solid second. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the album itself that much, but I think it’s mostly because most of the songs requires several listens and with all the music I’m trying to catch up with this year, it’s been difficult. I guess it means this goes on loop instead!
Favorite lyrics: “I've been focused on all of the things that went wrong, now I don't care who's even at fault”
#73: Asystole - Hayley Williams
Tumblr media
I saw someone say that FLOWERS for VASES / descanos was Hayley Williams’ folklore or evermore and it’s pretty accurate... except it’s better (sorry Taylor?). After Taylor released folklore and evermore, I was just convinced that it just wasn’t my type of music, but then Hayley released this album and I was like, oh, maybe it is. There’s just something about Hayley’s songwriting in this album, but this song specifically, that completely draws me in. It’s raw, vulnerable and real. She also sounds amazing with so little effort - the vocal range isn’t big in this song, but it’s right in the sweet spot of her voice. And after a decade of listening to Paramore, it is kind of nice to not hear her yell all the time too - not that it isn’t great either.
Favorite lyrics: “Revive another side of me / My eyes, to see the poisoned devotion in me”
#72: Yallah - ABIR
Tumblr media
Another song that was not released this year (2020), but I found it this year and therefore it makes the list. I apologize to the other songs that could’ve made this list that were released this year, but didn’t. I don’t even remember how I came across ABIR. Either it was on TikTok or Discover Weekly on Spotify... Either way, I love it when artists incorporate a part of their heritage into pop music that isn’t used much in the Americanized pop music we hear on a daily basis. The Arab music influences on this simply elevates this pop/R&B track, and it truly feels like she’s honoring what she grew up listening to, but still making it sound commercially appealing. I love love love when artists use their music to show a part of themselves like this. More ABIR in 2022, please!
Favorite lyrics: “Disruption with no caution / This love isn't common”
#71: I am not a woman, I’m a god - Halsey
Tumblr media
I enjoyed Manic (2020) a lot, and even when I like the poppier side of Halsey, this album sonically was really interesting and fascinating to me, particularly songs like this one. This feels like Halsey in her element, both lyrically and production wise.
Favorite lyrics: “I am not a woman, I'm a God / I am not a martyr, I'm a problem / I am not a legend, I'm a fraud”
#70: Set Me Free - Joshua Bassett
Tumblr media
Joshua Bassett coming in clutch with the actual musical responses to SOUR! I wasn’t expecting these songs to be as good as they were. Not because his music isn’t good--I’ve yet to hear a released song by him that I dislike--but I just didn’t think he’d be direct and vulnerable enough for it to make an impact. As someone who loves gossip and drama (but also honesty and authenticity), I thought he did as well as he could. It’s very specific, so it’s undeniable what it’s about, but he still gets to tell his side without entirely shutting down the other perspectives. Lyrically, it definitely is just as good as Olivia’s work, though musically it doesn’t hit as hard. Still, I am so happy he finally put this out there, and the chorus with the layered vocals and falsetto gives me massive chills every time. So good.
Favorite lyrics: “And nothing I say will ease the pain, but why must I hurt for you to feel okay?”
#69: My Limb - Hayley Williams
Tumblr media
Songs where Hayley uses her lower register is just *chef’s kiss*. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s just so nice to her other parts of her voice that wasn’t used as often in Paramore’s music, and she just has this amazing, rich, sultry lower voice that just makes a song so much more elite just because of it. I also just learned that a week before the album’s release, she sent a candle, a handwritten note and this song on a CD to a fan hoping they’d leak it. Like, okay miss Hayley, trying out different marketing tactics, I see you!
Favorite lyrics: “Funny, out the two of us, you always were the gentle one / Shy little rabbit, teething on a shotgun”
#68: Thot Shit - Megan Thee Stallion
Tumblr media
Megan is just so good at making catchy bops that are super social media friendly. Tell me you don’t want to shake your booty to this in a club because I really want to and I don’t even like clubs.
Favorite lyrics: “2021, finna graduate college / Goth girl shit, I'm a real hot topic”
#67: The King - Sarah Kinsley
Tumblr media
I remember coming across the TikTok (I think maybe the first, even) that Sarah Kinsley made to hype this song up pre-release. She was basically just showing the intro with the blossoming, classic-sounding piano with a building drum beat resolving into this cool, sharp synth and I was like, this is iconic. I also haven’t come across someone of Asian descent having this specific vibe in music, which is so cool for me as a fellow Asian to see. I’m a fan!
Favorite lyrics: “I built a time machine to see you again / To hear your phone call, your voice down the hall”
#66: University - Lido, Coltr3ne, JoJo, Santell
Tumblr media
Whatever the opposite of gatekeeping is, I want to do that with Lido. Mostly because we’re from the same county in Norway, but also because he’s an insane producer and just as good of an artist. I’m just confused because I feel like he’s not really that popular in Norway, but not really in the US either - yet somehow he seems to be well recognized in the American music business due to his producer and songwriting credits. Either way, he needs to on everyone’s radar! And JoJo’s vocals in this? Yes, please.
Favorite lyrics: “When the rain stops, will we be in love anymore?”
#65: Till Forever Falls Apart - Ashe & FINNEAS
Tumblr media
I think this duo absolutely nailed the creation of one of the most romantic friendship songs out there. I just love that this song is so packed with love and affection, but it’s platonic!! But it also works for a romantic connection!! Their chemistry radiates through this song, and I hope we get to see even more duets from these two in the future.
Favorite lyrics: “I guess there's nothing more romantic than dying with your friends”
Some honorable mentions:
FAIRY TALES (feat. BJ the Chicago Kid) - CHIKA (produced by Lido!)
BOYSHIT - Madison Beer
Tears In My Eyes - MICHAELA

when the bones are good the rest don’t matter || a. edler/j. markström
Author’s Note: This exists solely because of that GIF set of them doing the challenge thing Seguin and his girlfriend started. I saw the GIF set and immediately knew I had to write a story about it. This is also my first time posting a story on Tumblr; please be gentle ;-;
Warnings: None, though there are Swedish words used. I don’t want to spoil anything beforehand, so I’ll include translations at the end of the story. One last thing: if you get diagnosed with diabetes after reading this, I’m not responsible for the medical bills.
Word Count: 859
Title: The Bones - Maren Morris
~~~~~~~~~~^^^^^^^******^^^^^^^******^^^^^^******^^^^^^^~~~~~~~~~~
When he saw the video on Instagram, Markström knew instantly that he was going to recreate it with Edler. As soon as Edler woke from his nap, he shoved the cellphone in his face.
”We’re doing what Seguin and his girlfriend did,” Markström said, starting the video for Edler to watch. When the video was over, Markström pocketed his cellphone and looked at Edler. ”I’m climbing around on you; I’m the goalie and more agile because of it. I have less chance of falling on my face.”
Nodding, Edler shimmied out of bed. ”Coffee first,” he mumbled, pointing down the hallway.
Markström rolled his eyes but followed Edler into the kitchen. With the coffeepot brewing, Edler grabbed two mugs. Markström was handed a novelty mug with a Swedish flag design; Edler took a Vancouver Canucks novelty mug. At that moment, Edler chose to trace his finger over the tattoos peeking out under the sweater sleeve on Markström’s left arm. Smiling fondly, Markström shook his head at the dorkiness that is Alexander Edler.
A moment later, the coffeepot dinged. Moving his mug to allow coffee to be poured inside, Markström and Edler brushed their hands together. Both paused, taking a moment to look at each other. They shared an intimate smile, before resuming their previous actions. Clinking the mugs together a moment later, both took a sip of coffee and smiled. Markström withdrew quickly, exhaling as if he were a dragon breathing fire.
Edler chuckled, sounding almost fond. ”I could’ve told you it was hot, åsna.”
Glaring at Edler, Markström unceremoniously shot him the middle finger. Edler dissolved into laughter, placing his coffee mug onto the counter to avoid spilling it. Once Edler had composed himself, he smiled cheerfully at Markström. Markström rolled his eyes, blowing on his coffee before taking another sip. Much to his amusement, it didn’t scorch his mouth.
Once the pair were done their coffees, Edler insisted on cleaning the mugs. Markström mumbled something about ‘neat freak’ before heading to the living room to set up his cellphone to record them doing the stunt.
As he finished positioning it properly, he felt arms wrap around his waist. Jumping slightly, Markström jostled the cellphone out of position. Turning around, he glared at Edler.
“Tjockskalle,” Markström said sourly. “That was in the perfect place to record us!”
Edler chuckled, motioning Markström across the room. “Go stand over there. I’ll get it ready.”
Markström grumbled in protest but he obeyed what Edler had requested. It took only a moment before Edler joined Markström. Grinning at each other, Edler stood still and braced himself.
“I set it to a ten-second timer,” Edler said, barely motioning toward the cellphone. “Jump on me whenever you’re ready.”
Nodding, Markström carefully maneuvered himself onto Edler’s back. Wrapping his arms around Edler’s neck, he felt Edler’s head jostle a little. He quickly muttered an apology before shifting his positioning to swing his body around the right side of Edler. When his legs were bracketing Edler’s waist, torso straight up Edler’s side, Markström laughed happily. He was having so much fun with this.
Swinging himself around so he was face to face with Edler, Markström noticed that Edler’s face was flushed and his hair was askew. Edler leaned forward, head slotting into Markström’s shoulder crease.
“I love you, istapp,” Edler mumbled, pressing a soft kiss to Markström’s collarbone.
“I love you too, snöflinga,” Markström mumbled in Edler’s ear. Markström felt the shiver that ran through Edler’s body.
Taking his legs from around Edler’s waist, Markström jumped to sit in Edler’s arms. Not flinching, Edler gracefully caught Markström. Taking his right arm, Markström planted his elbow into the base of Edler’s neck. Edler grunted but said nothing in protest. Bringing his left arm up and around Edler’s face, Markström misplaced some of Edler’s hair. Edler grumbled, never liking when his hair is out of place.
Sliding out of Edler’s arms, Markström gave Edler a fond look before walking across the room to stop the video. Once the video was uploaded, Markström motioned Edler toward the couch. Edler followed. Edler laid on the couch, head in Markström’s lap. Smiling, Markström began carding his fingers through Edler’s hair. Edler hummed softly, shifting his positioning to get comfortable.
After a few moments, Edler was softly snoring in Markström’s lap. Continuing to card his fingers through Edler’s hair, Markström leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Edler’s forehead. Edler snuffled but didn’t awaken. Markström smiled fondly as he grabbed his phone. Snapping a quick picture, he saved it in the depths of his phone that no one had dared to enter.
Leaning down, he pressed another soft kiss to Edler’s forehead. Edler snuffled again, this time wiggling his positioning. Reaching down the couch, Markström grabbed Edler’s hand.  Pulling a box from his pocket, he opened it and slipped the ring on Edler’s finger.
Smiling softly, he put the box on the side table before he cozied himself into the couch. Drifting off to sleep a few minutes later, Markström felt peace in knowing the love of his life would have something to look forward to after this quarantine was over.
⧼    natasha liu bordizzo, cis female, she/her   /   the bones by maren morris ft. hozier   +   raven hair spilling out of a messy bun, dog-earred pages in a library book & encouraging post-it notes     ⧽   ━━      don’t look now, but that’s gianna mei. the twenty one year old gifted human has been here in seattle for a year, and is a student & library assisant. they’ve always been patient & thoughtful, but i guess this town just brings out the worst in people ; apparently, they’ve been way more outspoken & flighty. it wouldn’t surprise me if they knew what was going on.
click here for gianna’s pinterest ! and here for musings !
gianna mei was born and raised in tacoma, washington with her 3 other siblings. they were the definition of a lower-middle class family, living in a small, two bedroom apartment. the mei’s always sort of skated by.
her parents weren’t around much-- not because they didn’t want to be, but because they were busting their backs so they could skate by. her older brother took on the role of being the primary caretaker until he moved out, and then that role sort of shifted onto her.
she loves her family dearly, but always had the highest amount of admiration for her grandmother who lived an hour away in seattle. gianna found herself spending many of her weekends in there, taking her around on her errands.
after high school she enrolled at the university of washington and took a few classes at their tacoma campus, working as an ambassador for the school. the spring of her sophomore year, she opted to study abroad in florence.
gianna loved being abroad. she loved being in a place that was so wildly different than the place she called home. she enjoyed learning the history and meeting new people. she got the knack of handling herself as she went around-- knew all the pro-tips and the in and outs n what not. she felt safe until she wasn’t.
supposedly, somewhere along the way she befriended ( or thought she did ) someone who she didn’t know was an informant for the volturi-- a group she didn’t know existed, up until this trip. the idea of the supernatural existing was all but lost on her. for reasons unknown to gianna, she was something of value to the volturi.
she became aware of all this later, after she was taken by the volturi. enter edward masen -- the vampire tasked with turning gianna. even through her own panic she could still see in his red eyes it was something he did not particularly want to do. she wasn’t sure if it was her own words that ultimately saved her -- she made sure to tell her whole life story, that she had family at home that depended on her return, but he spared her. she was told to forget what had transpired, as if that was possible.
she tried acting like everything was fine. she didn’t feel she could open up this can of worms to anyone. didn’t feel as though she could take off running, yet, either, which greatly conflicted with edward’s pleading for her to get out of europe. but then an opportunity presented itself, in the most heartbreaking of ways. her grandmother started developing dementia, and couldn’t quite care for herself the way she once could.
there was no room for her grandmother to move in with them in tacoma, and they couldn’t afford to put her in a nursing home. it seemed like a no brainer that gianna would go and care for her. seattle was big. she felt she was ultimately forgettable, and could blend in among a crowd. it should be safe. it was far from italy. far from the vampires-- or so she thought!!!!!!
she’s been living in seattle for a little over a year now, and transferred to u washington’s campus there. to say she doesn’t have a life would be an understatement. while she had plenty of friends in tacoma, the same didn’t translate to her new home. she didn’t have time. she works full-time at the library as an assistant librarian, and takes two classes asemester. when she’s not there, she’s caring for her grandmother. a chick is always tired !!
gianna has not. fully come to terms with essentially being kidnapped by the volturi. heck, she hasn’t even kind of come to terms with it. she easily shuts it from her memory, but the backlash from it has manifested itself in many ways. she’s restless at night in the worst sort of way - she often can’t sleep or when she does it’s nothing akin to being peaceful. she’ll usually save her homework or studying for them, maybe read, anything to distract from what her head probably wants to go to. the bags under her eyes are usually written off by people pretty quickly. . . because who in college actually has a good sleep schedule ? usually the lack of sleep is because of a bountiful social life but. . . people don’t need to know that. she over works herself for the same sort of reason.
she doesn’t mind crowds after everything, which is surprising, but she DOES mind being touched when she can’t anticipate it. think someone moving through a crowd, and someone moving through behind her rests a hand on her shoulder or waist to move her out of the way. such an action would fill her body with DREAD, quickly.
some info about her just !! personality wise, she’s really, really patient. exceptionally so. gianna’s also pretty self-sacrificing, but not to the point where she’s a door-mat. she can be a firecracker when she knows people are trying to take advantage of her, or when someone simply needs to be put into her place. not really naive at all, at least, not on the level that she used to be. she’s a bit more skeptical of the world around her.
gianna does have a gift, which is why she was wanted by the volturi. she has ability augmentation. an ability that, unless she encounters someone else that’s gifted, has never affected her at all.
i am v excited to be here and always down to plot, so pls lmk if you wanna plot w this bean !! i am essentially. always down for anything. so if gianna fits a plot you particularly want, i’d be happy to throw her at u !!
“For the Throne” Album - potential clues to S8
I somehow just noticed that the entire “Inspired by Game of Thrones” album was released (they had only release the first 3 songs when I checked about 2 weeks ago), and I listened to the entire thing while taking notes. TLDR take-away: strong evidence that artists were given plot-points for S8, strong evidence of a betrayal for love, lots of fire, and (I think) major arrows towards Danni’s journey for the rest of the show.
Disclaimer: confirmation bias exists, and I love the idea of Danni burning down King’s Landing, so I can’t help but read into that. If the idea of that plot point bothers you, this might not be the lyric analysis you want to read!
Kingdom of One by Maren Morris
This was one of the ones released after (I think…) ep. 1, though it does have some hints to future events.
“First light, sacrifice” (Melisandre dying)
“Bird’s eye, saw the signs” (Bran)
“All you can give, all you can bear, all that you longed for, nothing compares, but nothing is sacred, no one is safe, so you wanna play God? Is that all you got? Would you sell your soul, burn it all, everything that you love, finally become second to none in a kingdom of one?” If this chorus is in-line with the rest of this song, this to me screams: Danni lost nearly everything in the Battle of Winterfell - Jon (parentage reveal), potentially Rhaegal (not that he died, just that he’s kinda Jon’s dragon now), the Dothraki, most of the Unsullied, and her most trusted advisor and friend in Jorah, and now there’s no point in not just burning everything down.
If I squint, the chorus could be about Cersei (everything she’s loved before doesn’t matter next to power, she burnt down the Sept and once Jaime left effectively became a “kingdom of one”), but overall it doesn’t seem to emotionally fit her as well, and Cersei has no involvement with the other Winterfell characters alluded to - nor any involvement in the battle. Also the song ends with even more fire (“burn it all”, “ash to ash, dust to dust”).
Power is Power by The Weekend
I know this song has had a lyric video, but I think it’s still worth examining. “Power is Power” (those words, not the song itself) is obviously a Cersei line, but the first verse seems very Night-King-oriented (“I was born in the ice and snow, with the winter wolves, in the dark alone”)
The chorus though then goes into something that could fit Cersei or (probably) Danni as well (“A knife in my heart couldn’t slow me down, cuz power is power, now watch me burn it down”). There are many, many, many “burn it all” references through this album, and while Cersei did use wildfyre on the Sept, Danni’s whole thing is “Fire and Blood” so it just seems inevitable that it’s her burning the Red Keep/King’s Landing.
“I die looking up at your face…Only love could kill me, God bless” Could again fit Cersei (with the theory that Jaime kills her) or Danni (betrayal for Love)
“Heavy is the crown, but never for a queen” Again, both Cersei and Danni, but again the song ends with “Now watch me burn it down”.
Nightshade by The Lumineers
Pretty much about the collective group in the S7 excursion beyond the wall. The second verse is interesting and very specific — about a single rider who saw the Army’s footprints, who swore an oath and with their life would pay, and also mentions “80 miles from home”. Seems like it’s about Benjen who was a rider, a Night’s Watch member, and a Stark from Winterfell (not exactly 80 miles, but I’m assuming that number was more chosen for rhyming purposes).
The 3rd Verse (“We were surrounded and the ending was near, all of the sudden, a ranger arrived, a savior appeared - made it to safety, but the devil was here”) again about Benjen (ranger) arriving to the S7 fight beyond the wall.
Originally I thought the chorus wasn’t really thematically relevant to the rest of the song (each chorus ends with “It was all for the throne”), and it seemed more like a general allusion to the marketing for the season, but also could be that the whole Beyond the Wall excursion was literally only to gain Danni a temporary truce in her perusal of the throne.
Hollow Crown by Ellie Goulding
The song overall is about a House of Cards (“paper castle”, “hollow crown”, all things that are flimsy and won’t last) and again mentions “burn it down”. And again pretty clearly seems like a Cersei & Daenerys song about the other being the fake queen and how it’ll end with Dany burning the Red Keep.
The first verse is all about paranoia (“Is there anyone you trust ‘round here”, “Keep a knife under your pillow”, “You got everyone against you somehow”, “It’s become an obsession, look at your refection, look who you’re becoming right now”): while this could still fit either of them, the “look at who you’re becoming” seems more Danni-relevant as Cersei has always been this way.
Baptize Me by X Ambassadors and Jacob Banks
Perhaps about Theon? A lot of water imagery, mentions of redemption and praying for a savior, but overall of all the songs on the album this one is the most vague and generic country-rock. Maybe I’m being stupid for not getting who this song is about, as it doesn’t even completely fit Theon completely, and just doesn’t sound like any character we know specifically. I’m really not into this song, and ends up just sounding like a guy in our world singing about God instead of a Game of Thrones character.
Too Many Gods by A$AP Rocky & Joey Bada$$
Overall about a lot of wars, a lot of gods, etc. Good song! Definitely specifics about the show (thrones, ravens, etc.) that could be about Jon, but kind of mainly about the futility of war and all the pain it brings. Some interesting single lines:
“It’s just too many laws” - reminds me of Jaime’s “They make you swear and swear” speech.
“Strange screams down the corridors” — Arya running through Winterfell’s halls
“I had a dream I woke up a king in a peasant body” — Jon post-parentage feelings, not feeling like he should be a king?
“Still and silent, writing papers, flying ravens with a message about me” — Anytime I read/see S8 stuff mentioning raven scrolls all I can think of is Sophie Turner saying she was given a raven scroll from S8 as a souvenir, and I want to know what it means. So that is all I can think of with this line.
Turn On Me by The National
Musically, this is my favorite song on the album. Great lyrics, great atmosphere. The lyrics seem to point to the song being about Jon from Danni’s perspective. Starts off about the rhythm of the ocean under the moon (boat!bang), and specifically mentions “And your mother’s angst the day you were born, the day you cut her down” (Lyanna dying in childbirth). For a bit I thought it could be about Tyrion, but the rest of the song is dealing with the betrayal of an intimate relationship which doesn’t really fit with him.
The second verse is a total mystery to me that may be solved in retrospect, but its very poetic (“Do leaves fall in perfect sentences? Do maggots crawl your name?”).
“Do mirrors laugh at you behind your back?” — this is the second reference to mirrors, after the line in “Hollow Crown”
“Does your family think you’re too far gone, do you wonder if they’re right? Are you different than you used to be? Are you alone somewhere tonight?” — Danni & Jon post-parentage. The Starks clearly not interested in Jon taking on a Targaryen identity.
“I’ve gone too high, I’m way too far, I’ve no idea where you are. Will I see you when you turn, when you turn on me? When I turn around will you be there, at the center of the world like you promised to be? Will you suddenly seem like a stranger? I can’t tell anymore what you want from me.” — Again, whatever Jon and Danni had in Dannie’s eyes has been ruined by the reveal, and her worry is that he’ll turn on her.
From the Grave by James Arthur
“crown of roses in your hair”, potentially about Rhaeger and Lyanna? A lot of “I’m far away, but I miss you and want to come back”. Not to mention it’s called “From the Grave” and they’re both dead, and within the song it sounds like the singer is speaking from the grave. Another vague song.
Me Traicionaste (“You Betrayed Me”) by Rosalia
It’s in Spanish so I had to google translate the lyrics, but the sound is very haunting and it’s literally called “You Betrayed Me” HELLO.
“I came to meet you even though I knew, Oh, you designed it, Bye, you betrayed me, Oh, love you do not see it”- Which is straight-up Political!Jon in one stanza. You can squint and see Tyrion or Varys betraying her, but she’s not in love with either of them so seems much less likely.
When I Lie by Lil Peep
“Stick that needle in my eye, just lost my peace of mind, I’m not evil be design, but I feel dead at times”.
“All my friends are really dead, still hear their voices in my head”.
This one is hard to pin down, as the lyrics are very specific but somehow vague at the same time. I’m wondering if “needle” is Arya’s Needle, and potentially this is about Cersei? Or someone else that Arya will kill with Needle? The song uses “lie” as both “not telling the truth” and “laying down”.
Love Can Kill by Lennon Stella
“I wasn’t thinking when I told you to stay, it was just too hard to push you away, you don’t know that you’re in over your head, I’m afraid I’ll push you over the edge” — Another mystery song! The rest of the song is about this relationship that needs to be let go of even though they don’t want to, and how one of them is not safe because of it.
I thought about it being Danni & Jon, but I don’t think it makes sense.
The only thing that has already happened in the show that fits the lyrics is actually Tyrion and Shae - him saying he needs her to leave even though he doesn’t want to, her being in danger, the consequence being life or death...but that relationship was a long time ago and doesn’t really feel important enough to merit a song, so who knows.
Wolf at Your Door by Chloe and Halle
Just from the title I immediately though of Jon at Dany’s door on the boat, but this song actually encompasses all of the remaining Starks (though mostly focuses on Arya).
“A wolf creeps softly in the snow, a knife between her teeth she roams, for she is now a stranger” - Arya using her faceless man skills to sneak into the Godswood with the Catspaw Dagger.
“Chasing a fairytale, chasin’ a lie, but everything changes, and everything dies. You preyed on my innocence, tried to bury my name, but now there’ ice in my veins” — Sansa wanting to be a princess in a fairytale that wasn’t real, her family dying, being used by everyone as a pawn, but coming out the other side.
“There’s a wolf at your door, there’s a hound at your heels, there’s a snake in your bed, tell me how does it feel?” — Maybe about Jon — the wolf at your door, and he’s sleeping (or was sleeping) with a “dragon” (might be a stretch to snake, but whatever). Or he’s the snake in someone’s bed?
“When you let the wolves in, you let the wolves in. When you think that it’s over, I swear, we’ll be there” - A Time for Wolves bitches!
“Up from the ashes, run through the fire, Down by the blade that bled us the same” — clearly about the Catspaw Dagger being used against the Starks and then Arya using it to protect them.
I’m lit by this song’s lyrics.
Pray by Matt Bellamy
This song uses direct clips of Melisandre’s words while bringing Jon back to life in S6, but then the English says “Pray with me, we can bring her back” which…is someone (Dany? Sansa?) else going to die and then be brought back to life? A woman hasn’t been brought back before in the show (as far as I remember) so it’d need to be talking about in future episodes. Color me curious.
It’s been awhile since Recommended Listen has done one of these, but back by popular (content) demand, the weekly Best of the Rest column has returned to highlight the rest of the week’s great music you should know. Leading into it, Massachusetts DIY scene favs Future Teens and Dump Him both tried to figure out ways to move forward while Big Thief are proving to be unstoppable with their creative genius. The return of Vivian Girls is arguably being enjoyed more so the second time around, Chelsea Wolfe’s natural instincts are giving us even more reasons to appreciate her dark art, and NYC post-punks Bodega continue to live up to the promise of being shiny new models. Meanwhile, Field Mouse succeeded at finding meaning in everything as modern punk scene cult hero Chris Faren searched for his within a screen. There’s a lot more to cover here, so let's get down to the music business.
Here’s the best of the rest from the week of August 11th, 2019…
Antagonize - Slip Death EP [Triple B Records]
The last time I saw Aaron Bedard, he was being showered in balloons and kids walking all over each others’ heads as part of the final bow of Bane, the seminal melodic hardcore band who very much helped make the New England hardcore scene what it is today. Bedard returned to the stage a year ago with a new band called Antagonize, and after throwing down some demos and promos, they’ve released their debut EP Slip Death on the great Boston hardcore label Triple B Records this past week (label leader Sam Yarmuth designed its cover art much like he did for the vinyl reissue of the 2001 Bane classic Give Blood.) Bedard’s intensity has not slowed down with the passing of time either. In fact, it’s become exponentially more confrontational as he and the band thrash through fast, visceral existentialist dread. Throw them on a bill with the likes of Fury, Fiddlehead, Turnstile, or any of the countless names coming out of the Triple B roster right now, and Antagonize -- and Bedard -- know exactly what the scene needs at this moment.
Slip Death by ANTAGONIZE
Charli XCX feat. Sky Ferreira - “Cross You Out” [Atlantic Records]
On September 13th, Charli XCX will release her long awaited “proper” third studio effort Charli. Between years of experimental EPs and one-off singles, it’s been awhile since we heard her target her vision for mass consumption with major label approal, and she’s bringing some of music’s most intriguing voices into the fold with her to get that across. We already heard her team with Lizzo on “Blame It On Your Love” and Christine and the Queens for “Gone”. Its latest preview “When You’re Not Around” is one for Twitter pop fandom, however, as it sees Charli XCX joining forces with Sky Ferreira on the A.G. Cook-produced track. The two artists have been heralded as pop music’s most underrated creators for the better part of this decade, so to hear Charli and Ferreira’s paths cross seamlessly into this digital slowburn as they put the collective shit they’ve dealt with personally over the years behind them is a fitting way for it to happen.
Code Orange - “Let Me In” [WWE Music]
At least weekend’s WWE Summerslam, rebooted horror heel Bray Wyatt returned after months of being kept off screen in action with a brand new character persona called the Fiend that saw him evolving from the creepy bayou cult leader of previous and into a psychotic children’s program host who turns into a deranged monster wearing a mask designed by horror film makeup legend Tom Savini. In helping get this new terrifying character’s image over with the crowd and viewers watching was Code Orange, one of the most exciting bands in hardcore and metal going right now, who reinterpreted Wyatt’s old theme “Live In Fear”, a sinister, swampy piece of occult rock originally recorded by Mark Crozier, under its new name “Let Me In” and making it into their own heavy pummeling likeness, adding layers of deeper darkness to Wyatt’s Fiend character in the process. This isn’t Code Orange Kids first foray in soundtracking WWE superstars' themes, as they backed Incendiary’s Brendan Gorrone live as goth anti-hero Aleister Black made his way to ring during NXT Takeover Brooklyn III. Now that Black is on the main roster, inevitably he will cross paths with the Fiend at some point, making you wonder where Code Orange's loyalty will lie...
The Highwomen - “Highwomen” [Low Country Sound / Elektra Records]
The Highwomen -- a.k.a. the country songwriting supergroup of Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby -- are one of the most exciting things to happen to country music this year. On September 6th, they will release their eponymous debut album, and to date, the foursome have proven themselves quickly to be working flawlessly as a well-woven collective where nothing remotely resembling an ego outshine the other in its first coupling of singles “Redesigning Women” and “Crowded Table”. It’s latest is a goosebump-inducing sunset song that hears each member sharing a piece of the narrative that tell a greater story about their ability to overcome all and any hurdle. “We are the daughters of the silent generations / You send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations,” their voices collect in its final moments. “They may return to us as tiny drops of rain / But we will still remain/ And we’ll come back again and again and again.
Miranda Lambert - “Bluebird” [RCA Nashville / Vanner Records]
Beyond the Highwomen, Miranda Lambert is now joining the highly anticipated of new Nashville releases with her seventh studio effort Wildcard, due out on November 1st. Her last effort was the excellently crafted post-divorce catharsis The Weight of These Wings, but judging by the sounds of WIldcard’s first single “Bluebird”, Lambert is getting back to her old high jinks of sorry not sorry whip-smart lyricism and folding them into cool, flawless country-pop. “And if the house just keeps on winning / I got a wildcard up on my sleeve / And  if love keeps giving me lemons / I'll just mix 'em in my drink,” goes its chorus. Lambert’s undefeated streak will likely continue with this as well as her tour behind the LP, which sees her bringing along her Pistol Annies sisters, Maren Morris, and Ashley McBridge along for the ride on select dates for her Roadside Guitars and Pink Guitars tour, kicking off in September.
Octo Octa - “Can You See Me?” [T4T LUV NRG]
Back in July, Octo Octa, the electronic dance outlet of Maya Bouldry-Morrison, dropped “Spin Girl, Let’s Activate”, the leadoff single from her forthcoming third album Resonant Body, set for release on September 6th. The listen was fully in motion with a bright luminosity radiating from with Bouldry-Morrison she says was inspired after a year of tremendous change and personal growth. That expanded energy extends even further in its subsequent listen “Can You See Me?” in which she allows emotions to overflow onto the soundboard through an empath in samples vocals and a cosmic tidal of synth arpeggios running through whichever cracks in its constant break beats they can find. It’s invigorating, and both as a measure of her art and being, there’s really no avoiding Octa Octa’s presence being made known here.
(Sandy) Alex G - “Southern Sky” / “Near” [Domino Records]
Rocket was a very special album in the prolific catalog of (Sandy) Alex G, though it wouldn’t be a surprise if the experimental indie pop wunderkind’s new album House of Sugar, set for release on September 13th, bests it in its own way. So far, we’ve heard the warped and rickety storytale standout “Gretel” and the earnest ode to a friend and place passed on “Hope”, and this past week, he introduced two more in “Southern Sky” and “Near”. The former, which includes an animated video by frequent visual collaborator Elliot Bech, is a country-stained sigh featuring Emily Yacina that hits a similar backwoods bliss that “Bobby” did two years ago, while the latter retreats to pinbacked repetition, wonky loops and samples that warp the canvas with Alex Giannascoli’s signature smeared fingerprints. (Sandy) Alex G will also be touring extensively behind the effort starting this October, with dates featuring the likes of Tomberlin, ARTHUR and Corey Flood.
Taylor Swift - “Lover” [Republic Records]
The last we heard of Taylor Swift was her divisive post-pop call-out Reputation, and with its tinge of industrial bangers and stadium-translating success, it’s safe to say it aged better than what anyone expected upon release. Her new album Lover is on the way next week, and so far, two of its early singles have been absolute dogshit while the other was just so-so. In the streaming era, it comes no surprise that there will be 18 tracks total on the album, which means there’s bound to be some duds. Hopefully they’re more like it’s title track, though. Jack Antonoff seems to be one of the few people who knows what to do with making Swift sound like a breath of fresh air in spite of her missteps in this lash-batting late night bar crawler that is the Jekyll to Swifty’s drunken Hyde. She really could have reverted full-on back to country-pop and easily gotten away with it...
Queen of Jeans - “Only Obvious to You” [Topshelf Records]
The surprises within Queen of Jeans’ sound are unraveling themselves quickly, but in subtle gestures leading up to the dreamy Philly indie-pop band’s release next week of their sophomore effort If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid. So far, they’ve delivered a devastating blow to the ego in doo-wop form with "U R My Guy” and searched for a way out of a dead end relationship on “All the Same”. “Only Obvious to You” steps away from pastel lights and balloon grandeur, leaving plenty of room fordark space in between two warm bodies for the distance to hit hard. “Love will fuck you over hard,” Miriam Devora repeatedly reminds herself in the listen’s closing moments, and in the listen’s video shot at Philly Pride, they want to do their community a solid by letting it be known that no matter how you love, pain is pain, and your feelings are valid, too. This autumn, they’ll be mending broken hearts on the road alongside tourmates From Indian Lakes.
Whitney - “Used to Be Lonely” [Secretly Canadian]
Someone in Whitney’s camp had to have intentionally planned to have the Chicago country soul duo’s sophomore effort Forever Turned Around be released at the final breaths of summer and the cusp of autumn’s cupping season on August 30th, because “Used to Be Lonely” is the kind of listen that tugs at the heartstrings of both the, uh, lonely and not so lonely, in a way that will make those with someone feel warm gratitude to have someone by their side, and those who don’t romanticize about the day it happens to them. Its accompanying visuals, directed by Austin Vesely, are on point just as well, as it captures a budding romance developing at the kind of midwestern country fair in a small town you’d hit up some weekend in September when you could use a slice of simplicity in your life of how even the most humble moments can feel extraordinary if you’re sharing them with the right person. If not, Whitney will bring it to you when they roll through your city this autumn.
Sweaty Lamarr - A Little Bit Cuntry, a Little Bit Rock & Roll
(Contemporary Country, Singer/Songwriter, Alt-Country)
Tara Giancaspro's debut EP sees her heartfelt songwriting take on the sound of contemporary country, delivering stories of romance, breakups, and self-determination with her charismatic voice and killer instrumentation. A Little Bit Cuntry, a Little Bit Rock & Roll is far removed from Giancaspro's previous emo tunes, but she's never sounded more forthright and confident than she does here.
☆☆☆☆½
Maybe it's an unusual way to start things, but I feel it's important to say right from the start that Tara Giancaspro should be incredibly proud of how A Little Bit Cuntry, a Little Bit Rock & Roll has turned out. A Philadelphia-by-way-of-Hoboken singer/songwriter who got her start only a few years ago with her 2021 debut single I Have Always Been in Love With You, Giancaspro came right out of the gate with sensitive, heartfelt songwriting and a powerful voice cultivated in her time taking voice lessons over at the Matt Farnsworth Vocal Studio and with opera singer Chelsea Friedlander, training her voice to be as strong and distinct as possible and passing over the usual vocal roadbumps most run into this early on into their artistic journeys. But her debut EP as Sweaty Lamarr - a clever name flip of the Austrian actress/inventor Hedy Lamarr - is trying something entirely different: Inspired by both her love of classic folk singers like Dolly Parton, Kirsty Maccoll and of contemporary singer/songwriters like Taylor Swift and Maren Morris, A Little Bit Cuntry... still holds onto Giancaspro's lovely voice and thoughtful songwriting, but recontextualizes with country rock grit and folksy introspection that gives her music so much more presence and power than its ever had before. Still putting her feelings at the forefront but able to dress them up with the gloss of contemporary country, A Little Bit Cuntry... is a fantastic addition to Giancaspro's early discography. Produced at Nashville's Lovegrove Studios and mixed by Hayden Tumlin, everyone who was a part of putting these songs together did a fantastic job with it all. Tumlin's mixes perfectly balance the album's softer tunes, the intimate Both Feet or glowing centerpiece Dorothy No More, and the punchier tracks like Brass Ring and lead single Abbey, I'm Sorry I Stole Your Man, by always keeping an ultra-polished sound that never lets anything stick out of the mix, all five of A Little Bit Cuntry...'s songs (well, six if you count the second version of Both Feet with slightly cleaner lyrics) fittingly beautifully next to one another and supporting each song's unique qualities without ever homogenizing the sound to make them feel like a cohesive package together. That's also something Giancaspro's voice helps a ton work, easily carrying the Jolene-inspired attack on internalize misogyny of Abbey, I'm Sorry I Stole Your Man just as well as the does the cowpunk highlight It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels, always keeping a gravitas and conviction to her singing and modifying it in little ways to fit the sound of any given song. It's damn impressive how solid all of A Little Bit Cuntry... sounds, especially considering it's Giancaspro's first foray into this kind of alt-country sound, but that only speaks to her ability to write and perform anything that she sets out to. She's got a pure artistic heart that can go anywhere that it wants, and A Little Bit Cuntry... is only the start of things. It's helpful that Giancaspro's emo roots translate quite well to this country sound, the through line between both styles their emphasis on self-expression and singer/songwriter vulnerability. It's a different kind of songwriting, sure, but the base elements of it are the same: she sings of destruction and leaving someone after they couldn't care to treat their relationship with her like it mattered at all on Dorothy No More, her swelling bridge about 3/4 of the way through the song as she repeats the simple refrain of "It's too late" (bless those vocal lessons, because she delivers one of the best vocal performances of anyone this year with that song!) could easily translate onto any emo instrumental and not feel out of place at all - the only thing that's changed her is the instrumental palette with which she tells these stories. She occasionally uses a conceptual framework to guide her songwriting, namely on the aforementioned track and Abbey, I'm Sorry I Stole Your Man, but it acts as a way for her already strong songwriting to ground itself in an established environment - The Wizard of Oz for the former and Parton's Jolene for the latter - rather than a crutch like it might be for other artists, Giancaspro's clever couplets and emotional intelligence on both songs ("Now I’ve got our dog at my feet / Gave her the choice and she ran to me" off Dorothy No More is one of my favorite) coming deep from within her the same as with any of her other tunes. The only time this falters a bit is on Both Feet: I admire how upfront and soul-baring she is on the song but it loses that bit of sharpness found on the rest of A Little Bit Cuntry...'s tracks with lines like "Pleading like a kid, god you sound so young" or "You still can’t get my cunt off your tongue," but the song is still overall a great one that doesn't take away from the EP in the slightest. There's not once a moment on A Little Bit Cuntry... where she isn't confident and self-assured in her songwriting, narrating these stories of heartbreak and self-determination with personality and heart - seriously, how much fun is it when she goes "He said he had to give his coworker A RIDE?!" on Brass Ring? - and even if for some reason you don't like the sound of these songs, it's impossible to deny just how enchanting Giancaspro is as a performer. With how brief A Little Bit Cuntry... is at just six songs and 22 minutes, it's a massive achievement how strong an impression Giancaspro is able to make within that time, establishing herself as one of the most loveable and enthralling up-and-comers whose voice and songwriting abilities go so much further than you'd ever expect with only a few years on her belt now. These songs are smart, well-written, and wonderfully performed, and it's hard to imagine anyone else in the indie scene delivering this kind of empathetic and electrifying experience as well as she has here. A Little Bit Cuntry, a Little Bit Rock & Roll is the best possible way Giancaspro could get things started, six songs that'll make you understand exactly why she's such a strong artistic force, a debut EP that shows off all her strengths right from the start. Wherever she goes from here, there's no doubt it'll turn out great.
Niall Horan wasn’t the leader of One Direction, but he might’ve been the heart. He radiated easygoing charm and mischievous humor onstage and just about everywhere else. It’s what got him past the X Factor audition he almost lost after a lukewarm reception to his rendition of Ne-Yo’s “So Sick.” It’s what got him a temporary James Corden butt tattoo during 1D’s appearance on the Late Late Show host’s old U.K. variety show, A League of Their Own.
With the group in his rearview, and the release of his debut solo album, Flicker, Niall hopes to show fans a different side of himself. Out of the growing expanse of 1D splinter projects — see also: Zayn’s moody hip-hop soul, Louis Tomlinson’s muted electro-pop, Liam Payne’s party-rocking rap and dancehall singles, and Harry Styles’s majestic classic-rock album — Niall’s release bears the closest resemblance to the rustic, autumnal mood of late-period 1D. Flicker is nice, clean folk-pop that keeps its sound pinned in the present while saluting the past.
While Harry Styles’s classic-rock trip took the singer through Rolling Stones, Beatles, and David Bowie fan service, Niall name-checks the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac as inspirations. His devotion seems deep: He bought a house in Laurel Canyon, spiritual nexus for the American singer-songwriter movement of the ’60s and ’70s and physical home to stars like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. He also calls Don Henley a few times a month to talk about songwriting. Flicker honors these allegiances without ever going full James Taylor. Album opener “On the Loose” and “Since We’re Alone” both crib rhythm-section cues from Fleetwood’s “Dreams” but approximate the clinical soul of Maroon 5.
The album loads all of its best material up front. Killer singles “This Town” and “Slow Hands” exhibit Niall’s ability to slip into folk and soul grooves with matching confidence, and “Seeing Blind,” the swinging Maren Morris duet nestled between the two, hints at a possible future in country. The back half of Flicker is full of delicate, drippy acoustic tunes that, while they’re perfectly pleasant, don’t ask much of the singer. It’s all warm, quiet balladry that seems well suited to soundtrack some maudlin TV-soap character staring into the middle distance after receiving bad news. It’s music that soothes but struggles to move you. It’s great in the background but thin on closer inspection.
It’s Niall’s voice that makes or breaks these songs. When he challenges himself, they soar. “Slow Hands” draws it up into a reedy, staccato delivery that feels like the singer freely skipping over the drums. He thrives alongside Maren Morris  because he’s had years of practice backing up a vocalist who really belts it out. But Niall spends a good portion of Flicker treading water, hovering in a lilting middle register that isn’t distinct enough to stamp this music as the work of any one specific artist with a unique vision. If you heard “Fire Away” or “You and Me” in a supermarket for the first time, you might find yourself wondering which budding Americana star had sung it, although if you’ve just sprung out of the margins of an internationally renowned boy band, there are far worse concerns your first solo album could stand to raise.
A lot has changed for Niall Horan since Katy Perry saved him from elimination on X Factor, but some things haven’t. He’s still a good-spirited jokester trying to translate feisty character into impactful music. Lacking the strength in numbers that One Direction provided, though, he’s still learning how to carry a full album on his own. Flicker is a good start, but a few of these songs mistake the haunted weirdness of the old Laurel Canyon singer-songwriters for the easy-listening schmaltz their best singles always managed to transcend. Flicker often smolders but it never really catches fire.
