Lyrics:
He was working through college
On my grandpa's farm
I was thirsting for knowledge
And he had a car
Yeah, I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child
One restless summer we found love growing wild
On the banks of the river on a well beaten path
It's funny how those memories they last
Like strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, oh bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine
I still remember
When thirty was old
And my biggest fear was September
when he had to go
A few cards and letters and one long distance call
We drifted away like the leaves in the fall
But year after year I come back to this place
Just to remember the taste
Of strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, whoa-oh, bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine
Yeah
The fields have grown over now
Years since they've seen the plow
There's nothing time hasn't touched
Is it really him or the loss of my innocence?
I've been missing so much
Strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, whoa-oh bittersweet
And green on the vine
Like strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, oh, bittersweet
And green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

Lyrics:
30 miles off the Gulf Stream, I hear the south wind moan
Bridges gettin' lower, the shrimp boats coming home
But the old man down in the Quarter slowly turns his head
Takes a sip from his whiskey bottle and this is what he said
I was born in the rain on the Pontchartrain
Underneath the Louisiana moon
I don't mind the strain of a hurricane, it comes around every June
The high black water, the devil's daughter
She's hard, and she's cold and she's mean
But nobody taught her, it takes a lot of water
To wash away New Orleans
A man came down from Chicago, he's gonna set that levee right
He said, "It needs to be at least three feet higher
Or it won't make it through the night"
But the old man down in the Quarter
Said, "Don't you listen to that boy
The water'll be down by the morning, and he'll be back to Illinois"
And I was born in the rain on the Pontchartrain
Underneath the Louisiana moon
I don't mind the strain of a hurricane, it comes around every June
The high black water, the devil's daughter
She's hard, and she's cold, and she's mean
But nobody taught her it takes a lot of water to wash away New Orleans

Song Of The Day - Feb 3rd '23
Faraway Look - Yola
After 9/11, country changed. It lost its touch, its spark. A rise in nationalism brought about the country that most people think of. The "I love my dog and my truck and The USA" country. Suddenly the genre which was once the lifeblood of the working man became the laughing stock of the entire nation. However, in recent years, there had been a resurgence of country in the classic style that we know. Artists like Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, Orville Peck, and Kasey Musgraves have brought in a new country, the kind of country I know and love. One of the best among these artists is Yola. This black, British artist is doing country better than half of the white men that Nashville cranks out every other year. Her blend of country and soul is what the genre truly needs, a refreshing voice that returns country to its original form: storytelling. Her fierce vocals and brilliant songwriting abilities are showcased perfectly on Faraway Look, the opening track of her debut album, Walk Through Fire.
Faraway Look is a whimsical tale, a reflection of Yola's life. She watches a loved one as they go through life, a strange distant look in their eyes. There is something in the way they walk. They are pondering something, pouring it over and over. They're a distant daydreamer, and Yola wonders what's going on in their head. The instrumentals add to the mysterious nature of the lyrics. They float. They build. They give Yola's transcendent voice the backing she deserves. A perfect blend of a wide range of instruments. The song builds until it culminates with the final message of Yola's song, the chorus: "That faraway look in your eye/it's getting harder to disguise". This person has some kind of secret, a desire to escape, and it's starting to show.
If there was any song that I could use to attempt to describe myself, it would be this one. Not just lyrically, but musically as well. I like to think of myself as whimsical, I'm really not. I'm a realist who forces herself to find the silver lining in everything, even though the logical outcome is still stuck at the back of my mind. But I am a dreamer. I dream all the time, even when I'm not supposed to. It's a bad habit, but one I doubt I'll ever get rid of even if I wanted to. I'm often distant from the world, but the world doesn't have everything I want from it. At least it's not in my reach, not yet.
