“We're all union people, only we don't seem to remember it. This land is one big union, and us children were taught very early that united we stand and divided we fall, and that's just what we girls are demanding—the right to be united.” ― Theresa Serber Malkiel, November 1909 from ‘ Diary of a Shirtwaist Striker’.
In over a hundred years of International Women’s Day celebrations, no country has achieved gender equality. And we should all be pissed about it.

this is stupid but... whenever i am reminded of the song, i think of that line from MARINA’s “Man’s World” that goes like
“burn me at the stake cause you thought i was a witch centuries ago now you just call me a bitch”
i don’t know how to explain it exactly but it quite succinctly expresses how sexism and misogyny has just become less overt over time, instead of disappeared?? it’s smaller things and quieter things and ‘safer’ things. throwaway comments, or having double standards. the murder and assault? oh, it still happens, just behind closed doors. and at the same time, there’s no excuses to be made by men in power, cause rich cishet white men can get away with saying whatever the fuck they want in their little clubs and societies. in those situations, they don’t have to make a reason or accusation, they simply call women derogatory terms because they know they can. in short - sexism has changed forms, not ceased to exist

March 4 Justice
A trigger warning for rape and violence against women
Today in Australia an estimated 100 000 people are marching in every capital Australian city in the March 4 Justice.
Sexual assault allegations against those in parliament have been systematically covered up and those accused protected.
Our Attorney General anally raped a sixteen year old girl who sought help from a sexual assault counsellor and reported the matter to police before committing suicide. He has the audacity to file a declamation case against the media for reporting this, our Prime Minister defends him and refuses to hold an independent inquiry nor strip him of his job. He still serves in parliament without investigation or any accountability.
This is only one of many allegations to be revealed this year and comes after a former staffer, Brittany Higgins, was raped in the defence ministers office, this was also covered up by the government.
Women are marching for an end to violence against women, and against this conservative government who enables and commits this violence.

A friendly reminder in honour of the Marches 4 Justice in Australia today, you can’t change the world if you’re dehydrated. Go drink some water, have a snack and then do what I know you can 💗

I wish I could march with all those amazing women today. I send them my love and hope and desire for change. It’s past time women are treated as equals in this stupid country.

Title: Respect women
#respectwomen #March4Justice I had so many sign ideas... it was tough deciding which signs will be bold. I drew this after seeing an article on how women were mistreated in politics. I kinda wish Medusa existed, so if anyone abuses a woman, call Medusa -give her the details of the offender and she'll pay him a visit. For this picture I've selected my positive role model female characters Trixi, Pink and Vicky.

One of my favourite signs from the march 4 justice today. I was feeling ill this morning so I thought it best not to go. So annoyed because I really wanted to!

my commentary and observations on the #March4Justice protests in Brisbane
some extra context I don't discuss in the thread linked above:
this is just my stance as someone who has been to a few brissie protests in my life and had heard criticism of the brisbane (Facebook) group especially in its infancy a few weeks ago. I went to the protest, arrived there about 10:30am when the organisers were still setting up the podiums and speakers. I noticed issues with whiteness and age of the organisers straight away, however hoped these would alleviate as the speeches and march actually began. As it turned out these worries were only alleviated by a very small degree.
I'm by no means a person of colour but I am an ethnic minority in this country and a nonbinary bisexual "woman". Moreover I am working class and the highest ranking my family has ever gained is the lower middle class. I don't think it's quite my job to speak on the issues of white feminism along its racial lines, however along ethnic lines, class lines, transgender LGBT lines, this protest was representative of a strange situation right now in the halls of feminist activism. I can also ofc acknowledge racial lines, but I have no authority to speak on that so I wont to too much degree other than criticisms anyone with a basic understanding of racial politics in this country would have.
I also want to specify this is not abt twitter discourse, this is about actual real life activism which affects actual change. Touching grass if you will.
We have moved to the point where mainstream feminist activism IS and WILL be criticised for ignoring the voices of ethnic & racial and LGBT minorities, along with sex workers and working class common women. However the bar is still low - all mainstream feminist activism has to do to receive cheers is acknowledge briefly that things are a bit harder for working class women and women minorities. You can get away with having just one indigenous woman speak and a black woman sing disco for you, you can get away with the most typical scripted acknowledgement of traditional elders, you can get away with mentioning each issue of sex work, transgender folks, racial and ethnic minorities, refugees and immigrants in a list as if you are simply checking off a box.
And most of the crowd will ROAR when they hear the acknowledgement of that suffering, and there's this sense in the air that we want more, we want to talk about the way this affects minorities more than the white middle class woman giving a typical feminist speech youve heard before after playing a beyonce song. but they don't, and thats just fine and mainstream feminists accept that.
They accept that as long as you acknowledge minority and class issues exist, they don't have to talk about it any more. If they meet a minimum diversity quota (set by they themselves) in their speakers at events, it's fine. The issues of minority women are OPTIONAL to mainstream anglo white feminism.
So yes, we are acknowledged. But only in list form. Black deaths in custody are an addendum not an issue of protest. The issues that white anglo women do not face are not considered necessary or important to the movement, only additions. But they have to bring them up, so they do in passing, and the rest of mainstream anglo australia accepts that, even finds it radical.
anyway those are my additional thoughts, the tweet thread linked goes over my assessment of the composition of the crowd, speakers, talking points etc. Its about a medium length thread, and a pretty brief description of what I saw today.
