#marceline deserves better

I want to remind everyone, it is a huge win when a formerly portrayed heterosexual character is confirmed as lesbian. That’s amazing. The best example I can think of is She-Ra and Catra, who were formerly seen as straight in the original She-Ra show. I was so happy to see all the “we won!!” comments about Catra and Adora being canon lesbians.

That no longer applies when the character is bisexual. You don’t take a bi character and switch them over to lesbian. That “we won!!” statement, it just became of a statement of biphobia in that context.

You didn’t “win” anything. This isn’t about collecting as many lesbian characters as you can; it’s about film and literally finally having more queer characters. And guess what? Bisexuality is also queer! It’s not only a win when the character is gay/lesbian! We all won!

If a bisexual character is having their identity erased and your first instinct is to say, “we won!” you are not helping queer representation. In fact, you are actively harming queer representation.

I'm definitely kicking the hornets nest with this one but I always thought it was weird how Marcelines "fallen hero" characterization wasn't really utilized... like at all throughout the show.

Marceline is mostly defined by these characters: Simon, her father, The Vampire King and Princess Bubblegum, with PB and Simon taking the forefront.

Which I thought was weird since PB isn't defined by her relationship with Marceline or any other character. PB gets to exist outside of bubbline and other characters while Marceline doesn't.

And... I honestly dont know why that is, other than the writers just don't like Marceline as much as Princess Bubblegum. I don't think they hate her, but they would rather write PB episodes than Marceline episodes. PB is a more interesting and fun character to write for them. They also need to keep up the illusion she's just as bad as Princess Bubblegum by... not actually making Marceline as bad as Princess Bubblegum. Or really doing anything with Marceline other than using her to develop Simon, making her a depressed goth baddie, or creating Bubbline ship fuel.

Yes, I still will not forgive the show for straight up saying Bubblegums shirt [the one Marceline gave her] held more sentimental value than Hambo. Ah yes... the shirt Bubblegums ex gave her holds sooo much more sentimental value compared to the doll Marcelines beloved father figure gave her when she was literally a defenseless child in a post apocalyptic wasteland.

People usually reference "It Came from The Nightosphere" as evidence of Marceline being as bad as PB but: She didn't summon her father to Ooo - Finn did. Therefore, that was FINN'S mess to clean up and not Marcelines.

The only time she really goes out of her way to mess with people is when she's being an asshole to Finn and Jake in earlier seasons.

Oh right, and using Finn to get back at PB that one time. But other than that - Marcy hasn't done anything thats puts her on par with a dictator.

Unlike PB who will literally gaslight a lemon child into cleaning up a mess she created... or how she would rather kill an entire squad of sentient robot guards for being too violent rather than like... idk... train them to become less violent... Or how literally anything that comes from PB's DNA turns out to be straight up evil... Or how she will perform child friendly lobotomies on her people while having the audacity to say how some people are just built different...

The point is Marcy is definitely not a "good" person, but she's not on that "literal fascist with a god complex" type of shit like PB is.

Another way they maintain this illusion is by separating Marceline and Finn, because if they got more episodes together then you'd have to address Marcelines "fallen hero" characterization. They're not going to address this part of Marcelines character because they were having a grand time making PB into a fascist. So they can't make Marceline anymore sympathetic than she already is. Remember, Marceline is supposed to be as monstrous as PB is.

This is why Marcy doesn't have any episodes with Finn post "Into the Nightosphere" and why we don't get any Finn and Marcy episodes until... [checks notes] Stakes... and even then those arent Finn and Marcy episodes. Like they only time we see them hang out together is when they make a cameo in Dark Purple.

I'm not counting Bad Little Boy as a Finn and Marcy episode because it's more of a Marceline introspection episode focusing on her feelings for Finn.

But yeah i think this show is funny for completely neglecting to make Marcy just as bad as PB is. Ah yes, she is just as PB because Marcy... [checks notes] has depression. Being depressed makes ya just as bad as a dictator dont cha know...

It's also funny how they want me to think Bubblegum isn't as bad as Ashe even though theyre literally the same character - they're both ancient beings with god complexes LMAO.

no, but have i talked about this on here before? because i don't think i have yet. though i was just thinking about all of the different people that barton has been interested in romantically, and one of them that definitely stands out to me is auriel. because even he doesn't really know what it is, but in the main story for barton, she's been missing for quite some time. i'm talking like ever since his final year of undergrad. so, it's been more than a decade since barton has seen her and yet, he still checks whether anyone with her physical description has suddenly shown up again in gotham.

and he has actually made an effort to compile whatever evidence he could pertaining to auriel's disappearance, which... although there hasn't been anything new as to where his character is in the timeline of events right now? barton may be the only person in gotham who is actively looking for her anymore. plus, before auriel went missing, she had actually lent one of her coats to him and i swear to god... this man has never taken care of an article of clothing better than he's taken care of her coat. so, this kind of makes me wonder how barton's usual behavior could be so contrary compared to him doing something like this.

i mean, judging by how he behaves around most people (which is basically TERRIBLY, to put it simply jsjsj), i think that he must've felt like they had a deeper connection between each other somehow. though auriel herself is certainly not a villain. so i'm saying this in terms of barton perhaps trusting her enough to tell her things that he wouldn't normally tell a soul, like how he was (and still somewhat is) afraid of his bio father as a kid. but yeah — seeing as i know what had happened to her character, this hits especially hard for me 😭 because she may not be dead but auriel certainly hasn't been in a good spot for a longgg time

Today, I want to bring your attention to Suad Ahmad @suad-khaled and her son, Khaled. Khaled is only seven months old. Suad gave birth to him in the midst of war. All of Khaled's life so far has been surviving a genocide. This war is all he has had a chance to know.

Caring for a baby can be difficult even in the best of circumstances, but in the midst of war, the hardship has increased tenfold. Basic infant needs, like formula and diapers, are extremely scarce, and near impossible for Suad to afford.

Even just regular food is a struggle to come by. Flour, even in small amounts, is extremely expensive. What flour is available is meager, and infested with worms and bugs. The infested flour isn't healthy or clean, but since the occupation keeps cutting off food coming into Gaza, the choice was to eat the flour or starve.

Due to the harsh circumstances, the smoke, dust and cold, Khaled has developed chest allergies and struggles to breath. He needs regular nebulizer sessions and medication, but these are both very expensive. Suad and her husband can barely afford this vital medical care.

Khaled deserves to have enough food, and be able to breath. Suad just wants her son to live. This shouldn't be too much to ask. Please, share and donate! Help Khaled get the food and medicine he needs!

• Oh boy, this one’s a doozy.

• Please be patient with him. He is a mess of a person currently, still dealing with the grief of losing Betty and feeling like he doesn’t belong in Ooo no longer being magic. He gets so wrapped up in his sadness that he can neglect the relationships he has in the present. This gets much better after the ending though.

• Self care days are a must, please just pamper this man with a nice hot bath and a massage every once in a while.

• Really good cook, he loves making food for you and it makes him feel like he can actually take care of you.

• He worries about you a lot, especially if you’re someone that likes to take risks and do dangerous stuff.

• He’s a big nerd so he gets excited if you share interests in stuff like science and literature.

• Although he doesn’t like to go on life-threatening adventures (Finn), he still loves the exploring the outdoors and the two of you regularly go for hikes around the safer parts of Ooo.

The Kids are Alright

I am a tutor and a substitute teacher. Lately, I've been doing more of the former. The ratio at my work is 3:1, meaning I get three kids, of varying ages, per session.

Yesterday, I had three girls, two 12yo and 1 13yo (almost 14, she says, lol).

They're all queer.

I did not ask this. I typically don't even say that I am queer unless I get a clear indication that that's okay with them. Because this place where I work is expensive, in the NYC suburbs, and it's a majorly red county for New York, so you never know?

But they started talking about The Owl House and how much they love the queer representation in the show. One of my 12yo's says, "Yeah I'm aromantic, but I loved Amity and Luz's relationship so much!" and I blinked at her, not because I was shocked that she was that, but more that she so casually admitted it. I grew up at a time when it was hard for me to even say that I was queer in my twenties, despite being out.

And here's this 12yo girl, just casually coming out to a room of people who, as far as she knew, were straight.

Okay, one of them was her twin sister, so obviously not her.

She looked at me, though, at my confusion and said, "oh, that means I don't have romantic attraction to anybody."

I felt like I got called old, but in the best possible way. I laughed and said I know, then told her I have aromantic and asexual friends, as well. And that got a whole convo going about their GSA clubs at school and their costumes (13yo is gonna be Marceline the Vampire Queen) and just...I'm so happy that they're comfortable being so out and open because I didn't get that. And I desperately want them to have it better than I did.

They deserve it.

Lies. Simon out right said he didn't want to be Ice King and that he would have rather died. "But what about what Ice King wanted?"

They're the same fucking person. Ice King is not a separate consciousness or personality, he just doesn't remember being Simon.

Betty was not wrong or selfish she fucking sacrificed herself because of how much she loved Simon. She deserves the world. Simon is not depressed because he lost his ice powers he's depressed because the love of his life is fused with an all powerful demon and he's never gonna see her again, not even in the after life, had she made it out he would have been happy. Would they still feel out of place in the futuristic and magic world? Yes. But atleast they wouldn't be going through it alone.

Simon's predicament was a metaphor for two things. Addiction and dementia. Are you saying you think addicts don't deserve help when they literally beg for it? "You can't force an addict into rehab" you're right you can't, but he wasn't forced he wanted help. Do you think if an addict seeks help they deserve to be told, "no you should just accept who you are now" and be forced to live in their condition for eternity? Wtf. And dementia obviously isn't curable, but if it were everyone with dementia or alzhiemers would want it cured and deserve it. Because no one wants to live like that.

Simon wanted to be himself again he just wanted his wife there with him, he wouldn't have rather stayed the Ice King the only thing he misses is the blissful ignorance that came with it. It's like when you're depressed and you purposefully make yourself numb because numbness is better than sadness, until even that stops working so you turn to SH because you think it's better to feel pain than nothing at all. It is unhealthy and a harm to yourself, Simon doesn't need to go through that again.

"Ice King deserved to be accepted!" He literally was. Everyone had accepted him except for betty, but oh wait she was about to accept him until patience fucked her up and gave her a false sense of hope, it's not her fault Magic Man made her insane. Not to mention everyone else had waaaaay more time to come to terms with Ice King. It took Finn his whole life, and he didn't even know him as Simon, PB took hundreds of years to be on good terms with him, and Marceline, the only other person who knew Simon as his true self took nearly 1,000 years to come to terms with and accept Simon as Ice King. So what makes you think his Fiance, who had gone crazy through no fault of her own, would be able to accept everything that happened just like that? I mean did you ever stop and think how quickly that all happened for her? One morning she's having breakfast with her fiance in like 1999 and then that night she's in the year 3000 fighting a demon to save that same man? She had literal minutes to process all of this, she woke up that day not even knowing that Magic was real.

And one last thing Simon fears death now. He has a will to live unlike before when he wanted to die or kill himself, if that doesn't prove he's better off now idk what does.

I will not stand for Betty slander. She did the right thing. And I'm sick an tired of people saying otherwise.

You know, if it wasn't for you raising Marcy (being the dad she never had) in the first place, Ooo and all its life wouldn't exist. In fact, your decisions led to not only the world's survival but its current state of thriving. The other universes you, Fionna and Cake visited rally showed that. You're a kind, patient, highly intelligent man, and you deserve respect. But most importantly, you deserve to love yourself. As someone who used to have suicidal urges and self hate, it's the worst feeling in the world to have, and no one deserves that, ESPECIALLY not you. You're a really good person and a kind soul. You're an antiquarian, a father and a friend. And who knows? Now that you're a thousand years in the future, there is a chance to find more artifacts, including those that only you have the knowledge of, and that's valuable. You could get back into exploring and finding artifacts again and writing books about them. I bet there are other like-minded scholars out there who'd be interested and appreciate your passion. They may not be humans, but you deserve better than being put on display and disrespected by other humans like that. Also, maybe you can reach out to your friends letting them know you're okay. Oh, and you were a great fiance to Betty. I know you miss her, and I'm sure she's happy that you're back to living your life more than anything. Don't let anyone tell you that you were "better" as Ice King, cause that's like saying being drugged is more fun when it's not. You may not be a guy who fights monsters, like Finn,but you're a hero. You did everything you could to protect Fionna world, and you raising Marceline led to her ultimately protecting humans, destroying the threat of vampires, and growing into an awesome young woman. The fact that you go out of your way to be kind to people and even cheered up Fiinna when she was down shows what a big heart you have. In fact, you're pretty much the biggest heart in all of Ooo. You would be missed if you were gone. I may just be a nobody and a humble viewer, but we love you, Simon Petrikov. You're the best. 💙

"You know I love you, right?" Marceline flat out asks him, because this girl has never gone around or over anything that she could plunge straight through. Simon always admired that about her even when this trait of hers caused him a fair few heart attacks.

Simon adjusts his glasses, clearing his suddenly dry throat. "Yes, I am aware."

They're at his house, with boxes of his things piled up around him. Bonnie, Finn, and Marcy all came over to help Simon move out of his old house into a new, more private arrangement. But Finn and Bonnie cleared out some time ago, when Marcy sat him down with a mug of his favorite tea. It was an ambush in everything bit name.

Simon supposes that he deserves it. He hasn't exactly... made time to speak with Marceline and happily allowed her to divert her focus away from him. Someone snitched on him, clearly.

"Hmmm..." Marcy squints at him, absently spinning the mug in front of her. The now dull grey drink sloshes lazily within. "When... When you had your big revelation about Betty, that musta messed you up pretty bad."

Simon stares at the woman that was essentially his daughter. Even as a little girl, she had always been prodigiously insightful and observant.

"This... This was different. Betty was my partner. I was supposed to check in with her, make sure we were on the same page. You, on the other hand-"

"Are you about to explain my feelings to me, Simon?" Marcy cuts in. "Or make an assumption about me based entirely on your perception of me?"

Oooh. Even if she didn't have fangs, Marceline could cut with the sharp edge of her tongue. A conflicting sense of pride and shame tightens his chest. He looks down at his mug of tea, taking a very long drink.

Marceline sighs. "I'm not five years old. I'm fully capable of making decisions - healthy decisions even."

"I know that!" Simon snaps back, thumping a fist on the table. "It's precisely because you're all grown up that I didn't want to say anything. Look at you, you're so happy! You don't need to bother with a sad old man like me."

Marceline gently grabs hold of his fist. "If you did tell me, what was the worst case scenario?"

"It doesn't matter, I'm doing better now. I'm going through therapy. I'm fine -"

"Please answer the question."

Simon stays stubbornly silent for a few second. Marceline squeezes his hand until her grip begins to hurt. He shoots her a petulant glare and she offers an innocent smile.

"I could make you sad. There. I said it."

"Well... I've been sad before. I got better."

Simon stares at this woman who he used to carry with only one arm. She's near his height, possibly taller. If he tried to carry her, she'd float to spare his ego. She grew up and he was there but not really and it's just another one of the Crown's costs.

"Simon." Marceline is hovering over the table now. "I lost you for a second there. What's that big brain of yours overly complicating now?"

Simon frowns at her. "I have no idea what you mean."

"Uhuh, listen. My partner is a certified genius, so I know for a fact that you geniuses tend to lack a lotta common sense."

"Have you told Bonnie this?"

"Verbatim. But this isn't about her, or me. This is about you."

Simon grits his teeth. "It's been 'about me' for long enough, hasn't it?" He shoves away from the table, gets onto his feet, and picks a random box to start piling stuff in. This will absolutely ruin Bonnie's meticulous organization, but that's just...

He sighs, steps back, looks at the label on the box before picking up Bonnie's abandoned clipboard to figure out the correct items for the box. In that whole time, Marceline doesn't speak. But he can feel her eyes on him like the sun through a magnifying glass. He sorts his stuff. She lets him.

Simon takes a deep breath. "I thought... It's bad enough that you spent all those thousand years watching over me. Then it turns out that even before I had the Crown, Betty was doing all of that. I just... I'm so useless."

"You're not-"

"Yes, yes, yes. But I... I need some time to work on myself, you know? I'm tired of being so..."

A hand settles on Simon's shoulders. He turns and jolts as he sees Marceline with a thin film of tears over her eyes. He immediately reaches over, pressing his palms against her face, thumbing the space beneath her eyes.

"Oh see, now I've made you cry."

Marceline shrugs. "It won't kill me."

"But that's the thing! You don't have to-"

"It's not that!" Marceline pulls away from him. "I don't have to do anything, you're right! But I want to stay with you!"

She blows out a short, ragged breath, running a hand through her hair. Simon slowly lowers his hands, crossing his arms and hunching over as if to protect his soft underbelly.

"I'd be rotten company."

Marceline fiercely shakes her head. "Not to me. Not if it's you."

Simon bites his lip. There's a tightness in his chest as if his heart was bloated from too much blood. He can't look away from her and yet he can't stand to stay seen.

"You don't want my help, fine. You've got professionals looking after you. And that's great. But please don't shut me out. I can't. Not again."

Marceline looks away for him. And this looks familiar even a thousand years later. The way she holds her head high, the way she clenches her jaw, the way she stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the tears trailing down her face - it's all the same.

Simon wraps both arms around her. She struggles for a second, trying to squirm away before she gives up, leaning into his hold.

"Okay," he murmurs into her shoulder.

"Okay?"

"Okay."

"Okay."

"Okay."

Marceline coughs out a tiny giggle. "Are we just gonna keep saying okay to each other until the world ends or what?"

Simon readies a joke but swallows it at the last second. He lets her question hang in the air until it becomes heavy and leaden. She stiffens up, limbs locking and spine straightening.

"I think... I can do that."

"Yeah?" Marceline's voice is sooo small, half disbelief, half hope, and all pure, raw heart.

"Until the world ends... You and me. We're survivors. Remember?"

Marceline laughs, a frail, watery sound from the hollow of her throat. "Yeah. I remember."

Siblings relationships can be complicated, especially if there's a big age gap and they barely had time with him before Branch started creating his own personhood, it's almost like there's no affection outside of the barebones and "obligatory" familial love

I can see Floyd just lashing out and teen brain just said "before the baby we were ok, not GOOD but ok" especially since he was the youngest and then had to "stop being a child" so his emotions are mostly directed at the brother he hasn't have for a lot of time, at the "outsider"

JD I could see him being the type of person that compares how fast a kid develops to others or kinda forgets that a baby, a toddler and a teen react different to the same things

bigger families tend to do this "your brother did this better" "x could do it at your age" "it only took a few hrs for x to get it" "it's so easy! If x can do it so can you" totally ignoring the difference in age and personality. it might even fly over his head that Branch is actually developing faster than a lot of them at that age due to the expectations

Floyd’s perspective is very skewed because of his age and maturity, before branch came along he could pretend that everything was okay and as long as he stayed in line and did as Jd said everything would work out. But than branch happened and suddenly Floyd had a new responsibility, Floyd wasn’t the baby of the group anymore which meant all of John Dory’s micromanagement went towards branch.

And in some ways that was freeing and in others…, suddenly jd wasn’t just overbearing he was obsessive and Floyd did his best to take the brunt of jd’s behavior trying to shield branch from it. And although he tried his hardest to love branch and give him the affection he deserved he couldn’t just shake the resentment. Thinking ‘if branch never came along would they have been better off’ and all of it simmering just beneath the surface until the night of the band’s break up.

And John Dory…oh boy John Dory. Now obviously he wasn’t always this obsessed with the idea of perfection that’s something his parents instilled in him. And you’re right he does have trouble understanding that different ages react to things differently because when he was a child he was expected to know how to take care of himself and his brothers. So he thinks that they should know how to do that as well. It also doesn’t help jd that his parents never took the time to truly care for him, he basically raised himself until rosiepuff found him and a purple egg in an empty pod with no trace of their parents. Which will do serious damage on a child’s development and how he perceives the world.

Basically brozone’s parents suck and are the reasons everyone’s sad :) also everyone’s dynamic in my au is based off of something like brozone’s parents are inspired by the willoughbys parents! Branch and Floyd’s relationship is inspired on jinx and vi.
