What's a book or series you put off reading? 🖤 Despite heaps of praise, I didn't read any of the Grisha books for the longest time. I finally dove in and binge read the trilogy (& then the duology) two years ago, and I get it now! And of course I'm super pumped for the Netflix series (Ben! Barnes! Is! The! Have you ever found a map in a book that really surprised you? . I was so surprised and happy to find these maps of The Soviet Union and Leningrad inside The Bronze Horseman by @paullinasimons I really liked being able to refer to them and see where the happenings of the book were taking place. I thought these maps would be perfect to share for #mapmonday ! You can swipe for a closer look at these maps! . I just finished The Summer Garden, which was the third and final book in The Bronze Horseman series. Words are not enough to explain the vast depth of emotion, the research and knowledge, the stellar character development and the sheer brilliance that went into the writing of this series. It was whole and complete and absolutely stunning from the start of the 2,111 pages to the very end. I laughed, I cried.... I cried some more (really there were a lot of tears) and somehow at the end still felt whole and complete despite the tragic beauty of each book. Whether you are a Historical Fiction fan or not, these books are must reads and come highly recommended by me! If you don’t believe me I Challenge you to read the first few chapters of The Bronze Horseman and see for yourself! You will not want to stop, trust me on that! I know that these books have left a mark on my heart and will stay with me for years and years to come 💗. . Books with Maps, Part 1: The Casquette Girls by Alys Arden Maps have always fascinated me. As a child, I spent hours poring over atlases and maps, learning names of new places and imagining their landscapes and forests, climate and fauna, peoples and cultures. I would always feel that extra jolt of excitement as I opened a book of fantasy fiction and found a map of the world I was about to enter. This series is going to be an appreciation of all those maps in books, with my occasional thoughts on maps as instruments and ideas, and their cultural role as visual aids. My first map for the series is this delightful layout of the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana from Alys Arden’s The Casquette Girls series. Why I absolutely love this map is because not only does it provide a great visual aid for navigating the locations and landmarks of where the novel is set, but it is also a great cultural rendition of the French Quarter. I see this happening in two ways. On the one hand, there are the more obvious physical markers - the landmarks, if you will - that are recognisable to locals and tourists alike, like the Ursuline Convent, the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, and so on. On the other hand, it also conveys meaning through the simple but effective delineation of the French Quarter as bounded by Rampart Street, Decatur Street, Canal Street and the Esplanade. Maps are often, among other things, boundary-making devices, not only geographically but also culturally. The French Quarter has its own unique identity within New Orleans, and as a historic district, the boundaries of the French Quarter are important for both civic and cultural reasons, which this map further iterates.
