★ What are your unpopular bookish opinions? I LOVE enemies to lovers—but I feel many books that get the label are better described as hate to love, or rivals to lovers, or mutual dislike to lovers. Also, hey—-look at this STUNNING apothecary candle from @fictionbathco 🙃 I wish there was a bit more nuance to labeling and marketing these types of relationships because they all do different things and sometimes I want a you-are-my-mortal-enemy-and-I-will-take-you-down-with-a-knife-to-the-throat-romance only to discover they just have a past school rivalry (which I ALSO LOVE) where one earned a coveted scholarship and the other didn’t. 😅 Anyway, my hill is that unless they would literally destroy the other person’s life (or take their life) then they’re probably not really enemies. When I see a contemporary romance labeled enemies to lovers I’m always a side-eying a bit 👀 (I’ll still read it though 🤭) Enemies to lovers in fantasy or dark romance though? Gimme. Mostly I just want a better idea for the level of disdain these characters hold for each other 🤣 Have their peoples been at war for three millennia? Are they vying for the same promotion at the office? Did they have to work on a group project in school together? ✨REVIEW✨ The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett . Today I tried put something different and wrote a mini review in spanish 💃🏻 . . Now for the English one: I loved, loved, looooved this book. It caught me in kind of a reading slump so it took me about a week and a half to finish it. I guess the beginning was a little slow but then the story diverges in different generations and perspectives so once it gained momentum, so did I. I feel like this is one of those books where you actually start missing the characters once you are finished and that is, of course, a sign that you have a good book in your hands. The story follows Desiree, Stella; two black women with light skin that part ways as one of them decides to live as a black woman and the other as a white one. You get to follow not only their stories and struggles but also the ones of their daughters, so the book allows you to see through the eyes of these very different characters and how they deal with race discrimination, prejudice and secrecy. Definitely I would recommend giving it a go, I even feel like it is important to do so. . have you read this book?
