currently reading: i barely read anymore unfortunately. it's fucked up and i need to change something but i'm bad at changing my daily routine, which currently doesn't really include reading time. i will say, i drive right by a public library on my way to and from school and i keep thinking one of these days i'm gonna drop in and get a library card. i have no excuses here i'm just way too used to not reading right now :/

And the most twisted part?  I'm losing sight of why I wanted to in the first place.  He's the one thing that's ever been off limits to me. That's why I'll tear the underworld apart to make him mine.  Valentine is the wrong prey for a myriad of reasons, and at the very top of that list is the fact that he's a DiFiore. He's naïve, reckless, and far too pretty for his own good. He's a doctor who can barely even stand the sight of blood. It's a damn miracle he managed to stomach med school, let alone survive this long in a world as cruel and depraved as ours.  He's also straight. Just in case there needed to be one more reason I have no business wanting him.  When the monster who killed the one man I've ever truly loved comes back from the dead and Valentine ends up in his crosshairs, it falls to me to keep this beautiful idiot alive. I can't make any promises for his innocence, though. Not when he looks at me with those defiant honey-brown eyes, just daring me to make him mine.  My key witness. My prisoner. My boy.  Because as Valentine is about to learn, I'm the kind of man who always gets what he wants. I'm just not sure either of us is ready to pay the cost.

Da 5 Bloods. D: Spike Lee.

Like so many of us Spike Lee has a lot on his mind. The Black Lives Matter movement. The Trump presidency. The guilt of the Vietnam War, its atrocities and its racism. The fact that a third of its soldiers were black and came home to a nation that still mostly considered them second-rate citizens. The My Lai massacre. The fact that movies haven’t given African-Americans a Rambo, a Chuck Norris or a John Wayne (all three, it must be pointed out, were the heroes of very bad Vietnam films). One thing he does not have on his mind is making a coherent movie. In “Da 5 Bloods,” a tale of four elderly veterans who go back to Vietnam to find and bring back the buried body of a comrade lost over forty years ago (and retrieve the millions in gold buried with him), Lee fails to create characters that aren’t types, dialogue that isn’t polemical, a plot that isn’t both muddled and predictable and direction that isn’t alternately slack and disjointed. It’s like he just put his ideas in a blender and expected a movie to come out. 

The film starts out by alternating the veterans story in the present day (it’s never specified why they waited so long to make the trip) with flashbacks from the battle in which they lost “Stormin” Norman (Chadwick Boseman). The flashbacks have a nice touch: Boseman is filmed as a young man but the other Bloods (Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Isaiah Whitlock Jr. and Norm Lewis) are in their current ages as one is in a dream. But there aren’t enough of them or of Norman. “He was our Malcolm, our Martin” one character says but we don’t see him clearly as a moral compass (Lee might have thought getting Boseman to play him was enough). And Lee abandons the structure midway to focus on the gold-hunt plot, a retread of “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” with Hong Kong-style violence but without Hong Kong flair. 

There are a few moments. A shot of the vets dancing to Marvin Gaye in a disco against an Apocalypse Now backdrop is funny and striking. The initial chemistry of the reunited men is loose and friendly despite the stiltedness of the dialogue.  A “mad scene” closeup with Lindo as the Fred C. Dobbs character comes close to Shakespearean intensity until Lee holds the shot until it instantly becomes too much. For the most part though Lee betrays the talent of an excellent cast. And of course, his own.

Terence Blanchard’s Opening Score from Spike Lee’s New Film

“‘What This Mission’s About’ was such a complicated cue,” Blanchard said in a statement, while also revealing the track opens the film. “It took me five days to write because of the detail in the scene and the number of important aspects that were part of the storytelling process. Spike put together a brilliant opening sequence to this film and it was a joy, an honor, and a great experience to work on it. This is an amazing story. And again, Spike Lee has found a way to take an American tale and turn it into a visually stunning, artistic work of art. In doing so, he has pushed me to reach farther in my orchestrations and in my thematic development. It was such a pleasure creating music to accompany a story that addresses our individual humanity and the immorality of the Vietnam War.”

Blanchard has been a collaborator of Lee’s dating all the way back to 1989’s “Do the Right Thing,” when he performed in the band for the movie’s score. In 1991, Blanchard made his solo cinematic composing debut with “Jungle Fever,” and he most recently composed the original score for “BlacKkKlansman,” earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. His many scores for Lee include the scores to “Malcolm X,” “Summer of Sam,” “25th Hour,” “Inside Man,” and “Chi-Raq,” though Blanchard has also penned the music for films including “Eve’s Bayou,” “Love & Basketball,” “Barbershop,” “Red Tails,” and “Harriet.”

“Da 5 Bloods” teams Lee with Chadwick Boseman, Jonathan Majors, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Delroy Lindo, and Clarke Peters, and centers on a group of African American Vietnam veterans who return to the country in search of the remains of their fallen leader, under the hope of possibly finding a buried treasure. The movie kicks off in 1968, as the five soldiers, while in the war-torn jungle of Vietnam, learn via radio broadcast that Martin Luther King Jr. has been assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. The assassination forces the group to face just how willing they are to fight on behalf of a country that doesn’t appear to care if they live or die.
