yes i always use a reference, i just study the reference, usually with something in mind. fabric folds, or how to render certain textures in pixel art etc.

most references are random stuff i picked up from pinterest

i managed to find the teeth one, heres an example of how i would use the ref to practise something. this one was warm shadows with a ramp to cool highlights
