Thing that I feel like I need to bring up here about Persona 5: most of the girls are competent cooks.
This isn't headcanon, this is fully canon. They cook together pretty often during Strikers and have pretty good results.
This isn't just because they're being helped by the protagonist either by the way, Ann, Haru, and Makoto cook with Yusuke some pretty good curry of their own that Joker only helps with at the last minute, and Haru teaches Zenkichi how to cook to make better meals for his daughter since he's not a good one like at all.
The only one we don't see cooking among the thieves during the game is literally Futaba who is considered their resident taste tester. Futaba, however, is seen baking in the actual P5/R if you romance her, so she probably knows how to follow a recipe well.
I just need more people to know this because I know there's a side of the fandom that keeps making the girls (specifically Futaba, Ann, and even Haru sometimes) as horrible cooks coming from jokes from previous Persona games. I know it's a funny haha joke but it's a little iffy to try to push this idea about the girls just because of previous installments.
#mayaposts#persona#p5#persona 5#ann takamaki#haru okumura#futaba sakura#makoto nijima#not really gonna bring sumi i to this considering that thats kinda one of the main things she does#i want to just discuss the main pt girls considering i see people keep doing this for ann and futaba specifically#and honestly it irks me like it reeks of misogyny a little#like i know it comes from jokes from the previous persona games with chie and yukiko being awful#but it's a little iffy to bring that into the next game bc of eithrr archetypes or just memes or whatever

ERM. for the bingo. Crona from Soul Eater Or Perhaps. Makoto Nijima
HOW ABOUT……… BOTH!!!!!!!!!! makoto first
its been a while since i last saw any p5 so my memories and opinions are distorted now but what i do know is every time i rewatch kaneshiro arc & makotos confidant i get really really worked up over What Could Have Been with her. all of the pieces are there and sometimes they’re put together correctly but sometimes they……… really drop the ball….. waste their opportunities……. Her awakening would have been better if it was actually against an Authority Figure Over Her (like the principal whatever his name was. kobayakowa? That doesn’t seem right.) instead of someone whose “control” over her was DIFFERENT from the “control” she was actually MAD about. the entire premise of her confidant is flawed, it should have been a completely different storyline because *she should have gotten to be wrong.* AND WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO WANT TO BE A COP- anyway makoto niijima is a fantastic and interesting character who got sorely fucking underutilized . Save her!!!!!!!!!!
And also sometimes i like to indulge in makoto nonbinaryisms.
crona under the cut v
oh crona gorgon you were so crucial to the development of a little 9 year old basil who was terrified of people and hated leaving the house and didn’t really have friends. The manga is great & the anime………… just straight up managed to write the exact opposite message overall of what the manga had been aiming for but im glad the anime was my first exposure to soul eater and i didnt read the manga until a couple years ago cause how crona’s story goes in that might have fucked me up a little bit. I owe them everything. We soul bonded through the greasy screen of my little android tablet and if crona ever stops being vitally important to me you will know I have died. Also I for some reason have it hard wired into my dna to not like romantic crona/maka One Bit so that makes going into tags kind of awkward for me but what can ya do

PLEASE spill the Makoto cop tea. I'm always down to hear people's thoughts on that
Thanks anon! I do my best to keep this blog positive-vibes only, but since you asked I will answer. Warning: DO NOT read this post if you do not want to see any criticisms about Makoto Nijima from P5 + discussions of police. This is not hate towards the character or her fans. It's just criticism for the writing choices and their implications for her.
Makoto Nijima does NOT want to reform the police. There's a mandela effect in the fandom where everyone seems to think she does, but rewatch her rank 10. Reform isn't mentioned at all. I'm so serious. What she actually says is this:
Within her confidant, the context is the host that was preying on her friend Eiko. Wanting to stop situations like that is good and makes sense 👍 The writers framed her decision to become a cop as a response to the most clean-cut black-and-white situation ever.
But here's the thing though: what happens when the lawless and the victims are the same people? Because in the real world, crime tends to concentrate among the poor and marginalized. The real world is not black and white. And I try to separate my personal experiences with the law from the media/art I engage with, but that doesn't work here because the game at large doesn't portray society as black and white.
There are a number of people in this game that do wrong because they have been hurt or are marginalized or did not receive proper help. A lot of mementos requests are about 'lawless' people and yet many are portrayed as 'due to systemic issues' or a lack of support or developing mental illness. It's also not a coincidence that Akechi is the most marginalized of all the phantom thieves and he was the one who did the most crime. There is deliberate social commentary here. People do not become lawless out of nowhere. They are shaped by their circumstances. And the game itself sympathizes with these people, focusing on changing/ helping them. The game's conclusion is that providing support and rehabilitation is the solution. Rehabilitative justice > Punitive justice.
Police wouldn't achieve that. Police in the game are framed as corrupt and incompetent at their core. Our protagonist is one of their biggest victims to demonstrate how they are weaponized against the weak. Even Sae Nijima at the end of the story has shifted to become a defense attorney rather than attempting to reform it (best character arc btw) because she recognized that the system is broken. And you can't even blame it just on Shido controlling the police because we see that the problems persist beyond him. By the end of the story they remain useless or outright harmful. The police do not help or rehabilitate, they only punish.
So no, this isn't me projecting my personal issues with cops onto the story because within the game's own story, law enforcement is not the solution. If it were a question of reform, we could debate about whether police reform is possible, but again: Makoto doesn't care about reform. It never comes up. According to the writers, she wants to be a cop because she thinks not enough lawless people are being punished. You can argue that her wanting to 'head an organization' means she wants to be in a position of power where she can reform them, but remember that police only enforce the law. They do not make the law. If reform was her goal she would be a politician. (I honestly thought that's what she was set up to be, since she was student council president and all but I digress)
Also a small detail, but notice how she mentions destroying the lawless before she mentions helping victims? It's super minor but I think it's indicative of the cop mentality. There's greater priority on punishing than helping.
I also dislike this conclusion to her arc because it's net zero character growth. You're telling me the character that was rebelling against corrupt adults' orders is now becoming a cop, the biggest bootlicking profession of them all? She started the story being a well-intentioned pushover, and she's ending her story being a well-intentioned pushover. And it doesn't matter whether she as an individual is a good person or not. All cops comply to be active participants in a system that is designed to hurt the weak and prop up the powerful.
TLDR: You do not help victims by punishing the 'lawless'. You help victims by helping victims. Period. Makoto becoming a cop is a contradiction of this and her own character arc. Either the writers did her dirty by not thinking this through or this is meant to be who she really is, and both those possibilities upset me.
#my post#now WHY did this happen? probably because atlus doesnt have consistent politics or because they dont have a political backbone#i saw a sensible take on this somewhere#that atlus' overall thesis re: society is that they think its broken but theres nothing else you can do but grow up and join it#that helping people is the goal but overall systemic reform is not#and yeah maybe im cynical but i agree that thats the case. feels like they dont wanna commit to an actual stance#i havent played the other games yet but apparently characters becoming cops happens in almost all of them#and its portrayed as something good and fulfilling despite everything#and yeah i think thats worth criticism esp if it contradicts the game's own themes#if you like makoto as a person then im happy for you but personally i disliked her writing. in terms of conceptualization and execution#i only described my issues with her cop thing but there's other writing problems that i wont discuss here#which is so sad to me because she had a great intro to the team. i had high hopes and they were crushed by bad writing#why does atlus do the girls dirty like this#ANYWAY sorry for the negativity 🥲 i dont usually do critical analysis posts. i really hope this doesnt upset anyone#persona 5#persona 5 royal#p5r makoto#p5r#p5r analysis#p5 analysis#p5 meta#p5r meta

you should say the p5 take out loud
okay. it’s not gonna be what you think though. p5 mutuals please don’t kill me but here’s the take:
in general, what makes the characters of persona 5 and persona 5 royal so interesting is how they all try to shatter the status quo. this is the main theme of the game – people realising the injustices in their society and rising up against it, rejecting the idea of “this is just how it is”. the characters embody a desire to break free from the unbalanced conventions of society, from the protagonist to the minor social links. however, there is one character who fails to live up to the standard set by the other characters; they have a weak arc, are unreflective, serve no real purpose that couldn’t be replaced by another character, and ultimately undermine the themes that persona 5 tries so hard to emphasise. a lot of people might think they know who i’m talking about here, but i might surprise you. i am not talking akechi goro.
i’m talking about makoto nijima.
makoto is hands down the worst character in the game, in my opinion, because of the above reasons. now, most people who dislike her do not do so for fair reasons – let’s be honest, it usually boils down to misogny. but i’d like to present my ideas around why makoto is such an affront to the rest of the cast in a more fair manner, without focusing on the aspects of her character (like her attitude, her interestin more “masculine” activities, her mary-sueishness, etc) that the afformentioned people focus on.
spoilers under the cut
first, when compared to the other characters in the game, makoto contributes nothing to the narrative. morgana is the link between the velvet room and the metaverse. ann and ryuji are joker’s first comrades. yusuke is the first non-shujin phantom thief. futaba has practical functions as the navigator, a link to the mental shutdowns through wakaba, and explores the idea of a palace soawning from non-evil desire. haru is used to explore goodness through selfishness as well as emphasising okumura’s death, sumire cements the ideas of the third semester, and akechi is joker’s foil. makoto’s role is supposed to be that of the tactician – the “brains of the team”. however, unlike the other characters who actively fulfill their respective jobs in the story, makoto’s “necessity” is a forced contrivance. she never displays any intelligent or deductive reasoning besides pointing out the obvious. in order to make makoto’s input seem useful, the previously competent pts are suddenly made out to be so dumb that they are amazed when makoto suggests the basic idea of forming a strategy. it’s also worth noting that after futaba’s palace or so, makoto accomplishes nothing within infiltrations. the game insists that she is a brilliant mind, but never does anything to indicate to us that this is true.
in addition to their practical roles, the pts are also used to thematically delve into the various flaws of japanese society, all of them eventually coming to the conclusion that they must reject the idea of continuing on in complacancy. in their respective awakenings, ann and ryuji work up the courage to defy kamoshida, as does yusuke madarame, haru her father, futaba her delusions, and sumire her grief. when akechi dies in the engine room, he has a similar experience in that he comes to terms with the fact that his violent spiral has lead to his death. however, makoto’s awakening is a rejection of kaneshiro, which is hardly something that radical for her character. it could have had more effect if it were someone like kobayakawa and sae who she was defying, a respected figure of authority in her life. she’s not overcoming anything when she calls out kaneshiro for extorting children. in general, makoto is all over the place when it comes to theming. it seems like they want her to realise that complacent in the suffering of others by not calling out authority figures, but again, neither her awakening nor her later actions reflect this. similarly, they focus on her trying to be “useful”, which is completely dissonant from the rest of the characters’ motivations. i ask this: what does makoto’s awakening add to the themes of the game?
if your answer is indeed to focus on how sometimes we must disobey authority to do what’s right, i would like to point out that the game does not manage to convey this theme it refuses to explore the consequences of makoto’s noncompliance. Yes, she refuses to name the phantom thieves in her report to kobayakawa, but her life continues on as normal despite this. she keeps her high grades, her student council presidency, her university prospects, and we see no effect of her abandonment of the reference letter having a strain on makoto and sae’s relationship. yes, she champions the idea of changing sae’s heart (although… not really, akechi suggests it first), but there is no confronttion between the two sisters in the end. she has overcome a non-difficulty, so how has she overcome anything at all? when we compare this to what the other pts lose for their refusal of society – a working leg, a best friend, a guardian, a safety net, a father, vengence, peace of mind – makoto’s arc pales in comparison. so the fact that the narrative treats it with the same gravitas as the others’ is a travesty.
furthermore, in some ways makoto undermines the themes of the game. reflecting on oneself is something that is emphasised by the narrative – most of the character at somempoint realise that they have been lacking in some regard, both in the complacency to society and within their social link. makoto never really reflects on herself, however. she is an incredibly flawed character, but the game and herself refuse to acknowledge this. for example she appears as a character who finds satisfaction in being better than others. she is incredibly demeaning towards ryuji, she wishes to solve kaneshiro’s case by herself (or at least be the one to provide the crucial evidence), she emphasises her “mental superiority” at every chance possible, she is desperate to prove that she knows better than eiko in her social link, she delights in one-upping akechi in the interrogation room, etc. most attrociously, when ann suggests that makoto, as student council president and thus one responsible for student wellbeing, may share some blame for kamoshida’s abuse, makoto turns the blame on ann, saying that she should have known shiho would attempt suicide. most people say that makoto’s decision to become a cop is out of character, but it’s sadly not. makoto’s refusal to reflect on how the pts ended up where they were, her refusal to actually examine herself as a character, her insistence in her superiority that she can fix a broken system… it all leads to the same place. now, none of this makes makoto a “bad” character (aside from the cop part /hj) – if anything, it makes her more interesting. however, makoto is more often than not portrayed as in the right for her actions. aside from at the very beginning, she is never challenged, never reflects, never acknowledges her flaws.
makoto could so easily be replaced by a variety/combination of characters, and the game would be better. akechi would have been a better it for the kaneshiro arc, even if it may have been more difficult to incorporate. futaba or morgana could handle affinities. akechi could work as the connection to sae, or sae herself. and i wish it was different! i wish that makoto contributed something, i wish she was interesting, i wish she was more than what she is. but she’s not. and it annoys me when people insist otherwise.
#anti makoto nijima#hope this answers your question anon. pls dont kill me#if anyone wants me to elaborate i can and i will#makoto is like a piece of paper i chew up

So I'm replaying royal rn, in the Nijima palace. I know that the navigation through the palace and all its trials is supposed to show how smart Akechi is, but it feels like they do that at the expense of other characters' intelligence
Like how for some reason everyone's surprised every time a casino game is rigged. The first time is understandable, but every time after that Akechi is like "oh this game is rigged too" and the others are like "omg for real?!" I know the phantom thieves, especially like Futaba and Makoto, are smarter than that. In normal circumstances I think they'd pick up on that quickly
And then the decision to dispose of one of the member cards. Who cares how fake the name sounds? Why would you not keep that? Of course, I think the secret borrowing of casino coins throughout the palace is a uniquely Akechi plan, I don't think anyone (aside from maybe Futaba after a while) would come up with that. But why would they try to throw it away in the first place when having 2 is obviously better than one?
Again, I get that it's to show us how smart Akechi is and stuff. But it feels a bit like the other characters' intelligence was shafted for it. (Though I think Makoto gets a pass for this. If the palace wasn't her sister's I think she would've figured out how it works as quickly as Akechi did)
HELLO so sorry im only getting to you now anon, been wading through my very cluttered inbox to get to those who want to have an actual conversation. clears throat
absolutely i understand where you're coming from!!! p5 just kind of has a recurring problem with dumbing characters down to make others seem smarter, actually (check ryusukeann before and after makoto joining the team, cough) and i def agree that the entirety of sae's palace just kind of felt like akechi was saying obvious shit and the pts were going "ooohhhhhhhh [sparkly eyes]"
BUT i don't think it's not as bad as it could be. the whole borrowing extra money + doubling their earnings thing completely bamboozled me, but that could just be because im a dumbass (one of the few who didnt catch the pancakes comment first runthrough). will agree that futaba telling goro to toss the taro tanaka card was kind of ooc for her though, i remember wondering why they couldn't just make multiple cards for each thief and enter them all in for when they rigged the games.
makoto gets a pass in my book because (like i said before when i initially took apart her character) i think her smarts lie more on the memorizing side of things than the critical thinking parts. then again the whole thing with tossing the card away was rly strange overall so maybe she shouldve picked up on it--though if futaba (whos absolutely the smartest on the team hands down) was the one who suggested it makoto might have just left the decision to her discretion
(apologies for the snippiness in the beginning, by the way. been a rough day and the constant stream of trolls in my askbox havent helped any. i hope your day is going well, anon <3)

Multifandom Persona, Project Sekai, Omori request
heyaaa!! I’m looking for either a Persona 3 or 5 RP, a Project Sekai RP, or an OMORI RP on discord!
for Persona 3, I’m mainly looking for a story based RP plot, one idea I had in mind is a plot where Makoto actually listens to Strega and it affects the rest of the story. For P3R I’m most confident in RPING Makoto / Kotone, Yukari and Aigis. I can still do Akihiko, Mitsuru, Junpei and Ken
Favorite P3R ships are Makoto x Yukari and Akihiko x Mitsuru, others are negotiable and welcome!
For Persona 5 spoiler alert I did not finish it and am up to September 26th, but can still do RP with P5! I don’t have a plot for P5 rn but we can discuss that! Characters I feel most confident in is Ren, Futaba, Makoto Nijima. I can still do Ryuji, Ann, Morgana (why), and Yusuke.
Favorite P5 Ships is Ren x Kasumi yoshizawa and Ren x Makoto Nijima. Other ships are negotiable and welcome.
Next up is Project Sekai
I’m new to PJSK so I don’t really have a set plot for this. I feel most confident in using Nene, Toya, Akito, Tsukasa and Mizuki. Other characters from units WxS, VBS and maybe nightcord I can also use!
I don’t have have any favorite ships here lol but most ships are negotiable and welcome
lastly is OMORI!
this is the one I’m most keen about for AU’s,I feel most confident in using Mikhael Baker, Cris, Pretty Boy, Sunny, and Mincy, but I can also use Aevery other faraway character as well.
favorite ships is Kel x Cris, Sunny x Aubrey, Hero x Mari and Cris x Mincy. Other ships are negotiable and welcome
like the post or write a comment if interested!!
any literacy is allowed!

The only confirmed S.E.E.S. members that are not yet in their 30s (this 2022) is Junpei, Ken, and maybe Koromaru [if he's still around which I hope so].
Sojiro Sakura might be the same generation as the Persona 2: Eternal Punishment cast.
Ryotaro Dojima (1970) is the same generation as the P2:EP cast and is three years younger than Boafu, and three years older than Katsuya.
Reiji Kido's child is probably the same age as Ken Amada and the Phantom Thieves.

while yes, she is not a perfect person and was a jerk to makoto, i understand why she did what she did. she knows how bad sexism can be in japan and was doing everything she could to make makoto's life easier. she was doing everything she could to help makoto avoid some of the struggles she faced in making her career, because even the most obtuse person can infer that she definitely faced some barriers. hell, she had to be a single mother to makoto and that couldn't have been easy. i can honestly understand how she came to resent her father and makoto, even if the latter did not deserve that resentment. she is in her 20s and had the responsibility of taking care of a child shoved on her while she was barely an adult. she found a job at the prosecution's office where she had the pressure of maintaining a 99% conviction rate by rigging cases. while rigging cases is bad, i don't think we can solely blame sae for a societal issue. between the pressure of suddenly being a foster parent and the pressure coming from her job, i can understand why she grew to resent her father (not makoto) and blame him for her circumstances.
now, this is not to make excuses for her character/actions, but instead i think it sheds light on them. she is such an amazingly flawed character in a story where everything is pretty much black and white. (which isn't a bad thing, just a different way of telling stories. obviously pretty much all of the other palace members, besides sae and futaba, should not be sympathized with)people are good or they are evil. that's why she's such an interesting character to me.
she's the only palace ruler (sans futaba but i'm not really counting her since she's kind of an outlier) to open to reason. she realizes that her jealousy and resentment is pointless. she realizes that she shouldn't hold on to grudges and that her overcompensating isn't helpful nor heathy.
despite her flaws, i genuinely believe that she is a good person. she shows compassion towards the protagonist and was disgusted by what the police did to him. say what you will, but she actually listened to his side of the story. if you are just looking at this from an outside perspective, i doubt that you'd immediately believe that the protag was telling the truth about the metaverse.
in conclusion, i view sae nijima almost the same way i view mishima (except i just don't like mishima because of his personality. he definitely could have been written better but that is a story for another day.) they are both amazing sources of nuance in the p5 story. not everything has to have nuance, you really can't do that with most of the palace rulers and i don't think you should, but sae nijima is such a great change from the pervious palace rulers and like a relative breath of fresh air between okumura's and shido's palaces. all in all, i love sae nijima so much and she is such a well writing character
okay so i know i'm on my spider-verse bullshit but i'm playing persona 5 royal right now. and, i don't care what people say I will be a sae nijima fan til the day i die.

i know most things abt you but skdjsks WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU WANT TO BE REINCARNATED AS, IF YOU COULD MAKE ANYTHING A REALITY BE IT GADGET OR ANIMAL JUST ONCE WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE, AND WHICH 5 FICTIONAL CHARACTERS WOULD YOU MAKE REAL IF YOU COULD
okay so for being reincarnated as an animal, my brain immediately jumps to one of my favourite animals so cat, wolf, eagle or owl. out of those four?? i have no idea. just one of those four; i’d need to think about it a bit more probably-
stands i’m not sure tbh. like in terms of fictional creatures, unicorns and phoenixes are cool as hell but then in terms of technology, space travel is cool, robotic prosthetic would be good too and also actual robots could be good. but then again this an anything question so i don’t need to limit myself to animals and technology. i could go with magic or something. THIS HAS TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES AND I’M ONLY ALLOWED ONE AAAHHH. uuuuhhh. fuck it i’m going back to my immediate thought; we’re going with stands since there’s like no limits on those. and having healing stands like crazy diamond or pearl jam would be a Good thing.
and for this one i’m gonna stop myself from picking all jjba characters and give other franchises a chance:jolyne kujo, jean pierre polnareff, jotaro kujo, ryuji sakamoto and hamuko arisato
send me three random things you wanna know about me!! (askbox)
#honourable character mentions:#bruno and abba#shu from blue dragon#aki and shinji from p3#makoto nijima from p5#ordis from warframe#there were a lot of characters that came to mind for that last one limiting it to only 5 was difficult#thank you for asking!!#vaguelyillegal

do you ever think about the fact that the phantom thieves literally watched their friends slowly crumble into dust in a blood soaked street before slowly crumbling to nothing themselves?
bc i do
imagine one of the phantom thieves having that nightmare, years after the fact, waking up in the middle of the night clutching their chest.
they open the group chat sobbing and incoherent. futaba understands their garbled text and opens a video call for them, to show them that everyone is really real, and theyre okay
and they make sleepy conversation until the nightmare haver is soothed enough to sleep.
#persona 5#persona 5 spoilers#im so tired of ‘and they happily parted ways except for the couples’ endings#gimme trauma#gimme found family#even from far away theyre still family#futaba sakura#joker#p5 akira#ryuji sakamoto#ann takamaki#makoto nijima#yusuke kitagawa#haru okumaru
