dr who is (apparently) redesigning this turtle from the classic series to be just a green human elf lady instead and twitter is eating it up because "no one would take the show seriously otherwise" and "the audience isn't able to empathize with something that doesn't look human". another fascinating data point in the psychology of doctor who fans.
#i know people will read this and think i'm saying the show should look stupid#i'm actually saying 'why are doctor who fans so rejecting of the idea that you can make an alien with a beak look good in a dramatic contex#and why do so many of them think the audience are incapable of feeling empathy towards a lizard#when the show so often asks you to read emotion into a puppet as simple and inhuman as a dalek#also a lot of people comparing making it human to shape of water#come on#he was not passing the harkness test and he still won the oscar

eleven is fascinating to me because he came right off the back of tens horrible traumatic breakdown after he lost everything and he immediately tried to establish himself as the opposite of that. he is funny and goofy and almost childlike, and he bulldozes on in his adventures with amy like nothing happened at all. but then something happens and his masks slips and it's like oh! the core of this man is still anger. he is so so angry all of the time and this façade is the only thing stopping him from being consumed by it. he isn't over any of it and he hasn't moved on. he is wearing a fez and laughing but under that all that exists is age old anger and grief and it is going to consume him
#i do think that this pit of anger was eventually covered and soothed by the ponds#but he didn't adress it and he couldn't even look at it until he was twelve#when he stopped pushing back and repressing everything and finally allowed himself to exist as he was#but ok listen#its all layed out in the first 3 episodes of season 5 and in the way amy sees him#episode 1. here is the new doctor he is energetic and reeling and fun#episode 2. the space whale comparison. here is the new doctor. he is unthinkably ancient and almost godlike but he is so so kind#and patient and good. he is ancient and lonely but he can't stand to see children cry. so the doctor helps people#episode 3. daleks. the doctor is a soldier. these are his age old enemies. he wants them dead and he will stop at nothing#all logic and reason vanish. he is hitting the dalek with a pipe and yelling his head off while amy watches in horror#like obviously we know why but amy didnt#this is not a sane or rational man he is unstable and angry#and in that episode he was stripped back to what he largely is: hate#you would make a good dalek ect ect ect#anyway 3 episodes with 3 very distinct and equally definitely traits layed out like: here you go#i don't like elevens era much but those first 3 episodes were great#doctor who#eleven#amy#eleventh doctor#matt smith#dr who#dw#i mean idk this is what river literally had to spell out for him#eleven was careening completely out of control#how long til doctor means warrior indeed?#mine

In a way, the Daleks admire the Doctor. Of course, the Doctor is their enemy—the Predator, the Oncoming Storm, the Great Exterminator, the Destroyer of Worlds—but universally, Daleks admire hatred and destruction and to them, no one else embodies that quite like the Doctor does.
#imagine being told by your greatest enemy that you make a good Dalek#all the names the Daleks have for the Doctor and I can’t help but to see them as a form of adulation#doctor who#the doctor#Daleks#the oncoming storm#the predator

¡Time has come full circle and we’re getting a historical episode set in the era that the show began! ¿What AO3-song-as-the-title type option do you think would work best?
#technically they already did a 60s throwback arc in revelation of the daleks but that was 30 years ago#it’s been so long since that throwback episode that this one is twice as far in the past as that one#anyways they should make an ian chesterton reference thank you and good night#doctor who#fourteenth doctor#fifteenth doctor#seriously what are we calling him#ncuti gatwa#ruby sunday#millie gibson#the beatles

Patrick Troughton lays down the law as Italian police Inspector Guido Gambetti in The Saint: Interlude in Venice (5.2, ITC, 1966)
#fave spotting#patrick troughton#the saint#interlude in venice#doctor who#classic doctor who#two#1966#itc#Pat had made a previous Saint ep (2.18‚ The Romantic Matron) also as a local cop embroiled in Simon's schemes (Argentine in the earlier ep#Venetian here). his cop this time is rather more fleshed out; he's astute and intelligent enough to allow Simon pretty much a free#hand in pursuing the villains (all the most successful guest cops pretty much sit back and let him do his thing) whilst also acknowledging#that solving the case will undoubtedly be good for his career. there's also a subtle hint of comic business; in their first meeting#in a hospital‚ Pat sits on what appears to be a stretcher and has to be moved off it by an irate nurse‚ and he also offers to light candles#for Simon (bc he's the Saint ofc). this aired almost exactly a month before Pat debuted in DW in Power of the Daleks episode 1#his tenure on Who would put an end to these kinds of guest spots for a couple of years‚ and afterwards he'd generally appear in more mature#or quirky guest roles‚ making this quite possibly the last of his detective roles#but he's a lot of fun as always‚ and his Italiano accent is definitely on the right side of Ham#and to think @thisbluespirit you and @basiltheratatouille were planning to waylay me and steal these dvds away!#and deprive me of a little Italian Patty T?! monsters both

oh, yeah, another thing i noticed that was odd about s5 in comparison to earlier seasons was how much they relied on like. not the history of the doctor, exactly, but the image of that history. whether from little easter eggs of the first doctor’s picture popping up everywhere to i think the two(?) times in the season we get a montage of past doctors. and i honestly can’t remember anything like that happening earlier (with the exception of the time crash short, which felt more substantial to me and was also like. 7 straight minutes of david tennant being allowed to fangirl.)
and i say ‘the image’ because hell knows the RTD era was pulling from doctor who past left, right, and center, but it rarely felt like a moment of ‘look at this old thing, you remember old thing? old thing was cool and so are we for continuing it.’ and more like ‘here’s a species/character/etc from classic who. and here’s how they’ve changed and fit into the new world we’ve built for the show.’
I guess, the difference here for me is that. i haven’t watched classic who. s5 shows me a slideshow of doctors and to me, those are the guys i once ranked by how sexy i think they are. and not much else. i don’t have an emotional connection to an image. but take, say, school reunion? an episode that was my favorite even back when i was a kid specifically because i adored sarah jane? i had no idea who she was then, i only just figured out a little bit ago which doctor she traveled with, and exclusively all i’ve watched of her is that episode in s2 and the sarah jane adventures. and yet, that episode, without the context there for me, managed to make sense to me. i’m sure it was probably even more impactful to fans of sarah jane from classic who, but it didn’t lose its impact without that knowledge.
so, that’s a shift. i don’t want to say it’s a negative one, exactly, because maybe people who have seen classic who like these references and i’m missing something. but, to me, it feels a little more shallow.
#sorry if i kept talking about sarah jane and school reunion we’d be here all day. her reintroduction to nuwho is phenomenal.#even without classic who. you get it. you get what the doctor did to her. you understand how much it hurt her. by giving her time with rose#we’re able to use what we know about rose to parallel her with sarah jane and infer that sarah jane was a lot like her once. it’s good!#and seeing pictures of the first doctor is like. very funny because he’s a silly little guy. but i don’t know that man.#but yeah. another example i’d put out there is Dalek. and yes everyone loves dalek we all know its good. but. without the context of classic#who. this was the choice of how to reintroduce the daleks to the audience. not as silly tin can killing machine. but as this. this wretched#and pitiable thing that dies to see the sunlight. this monster that is. in its last moments. capable of change. however small.#(a theme that i think links up well to evolution of the daleks in s3. i think its interesting how we’re invited to see the daleks first as#beings that have had a great and terrible injustice done to them. (in episode: the dalek being chained up and tortured. in a wider context:#how daleks are made at all.) before we’re introduced to them as a galaxy-wide threat intent on inflicting that same suffering on the rest of#the universe.)#MY POINT IS: nuwho and classic who mix well when the classic who elements are reintroduced in a way that makes sense both for people with#the back knowledge of classic who (and maybe they get even more out of it) while ALSO makign sense to people who’ve only seen nuwho.#anyway. this is a small thing its far from like. a show-ruining point. its literally fine lol.#doctor who#dw lb

“As hard as this is for you to understand, this isn’t about you, it’s about the daleks”
“Please stop using that word, it has no meaning.”
“Yes, it does! To millions of people dalek means hate.”
I think remembering the daleks were always intended to be a very obvious and unsubtle nazi allegory is integral to properly appreciating this exchange.
This is actually good writing from chibnall.
#it’s makes sense for the characters to be saying this in the moment#but it also has a meta meaning to the viewer that is aware of its social context#WITHOUT coming as across as jarring and preachy#seriously good job chibnall#doctor who#dw#revolution of the daleks#thirteenth doctor#jodie whittaker#chris chibnall

it's just dawned on me that i fucking love endings where there is an alternative to just Killing The Bad People because if there's one mentality that's more toxic to humanity than any other, it's the idea that some people are Just Bad and deserve bad things to happen to them, and how people use that belief to justify doing bad things to people in turn. seeing that cycle get broken in media and forcing people to stop doing awful shit rather than just get killed thinking they were right along is way more cathartic and compelling to me
#personal crap#ik it's not always realistic but media doesn't have to be realistic to be good#like sorry but Killing The Bad Guy will never be as creative or compelling to me#as something like what su did about fixing homeworld and steven's trauma#or what spop did with catra and adora's relationship in the end#or what the tv finale of evangelion does with shinji remaking the world after accepting he and the other people in his life matter#or (to go a bit self-indulgent) what the prisoner does with having the finale be about number six joining forces with number two#and other villagers and prisoners of the village to finally break out of it#or... i could name several doctor who stories like that lol#just off the top of my head dalek with rose making the doctor face up to his trauma and trying to make the dalek see it's not worth killing

new who has emphasized the cybermen as a loss of personhood but they really really have not leaned into the horror of it like they could. there have even been stories of maintaining ones personhood through the conversion but what about the opposite? what about a generation of cybermen that do not hide what they used to be, whose faces are still visible, reflecting an individuality they no longer possess, but that is meaningful to the people they used to belong to? the “ghosts” of doomsday were imagined to be dead loved ones, but what if you saw their face? what if your grandfather was looking you in the face but did not recognize you. what if he offered a way to take away the pain of loss. what if the ordeal was over and the danger was done and the thing piloting his body survived it intact. what if he was right there but you could never, ever have him back. what then
#idek what i’m saying i’m just making stuff up#to flesh it out into a two-episode concept you’d probably want to have some kinda like; cyberscouts#cybermen who are like 90% corpse 10% metal who kinda go out and pretend to be human still#and then offer a solution to emotional troubles. one that worked for them#and then bam get cybered idiot#which would be the reveal at the end of the first episode; that it’s cybermen#and then the second is dealing w the cybermen#the only trouble is a scheme like that requires a degree of emotional intelligence i don’t think the cybermen have#bc the thing is they’re quite simple about that kind of thing#assimilate into the army and that’s it#an infiltration program that relies on manipulation is more out of the dalek playbook; i think#which means you might need to credit it to someone else#i suppose the master is right there; but there’s other options#hm#much to consider but not really#i just think. emphasizing how much these things used to be People would be nice#a modern suit could walk around empty but not an original one#those things needed A Body#you couldn’t escape the corpse in them and thats. that’s a good thing#bc it makes the terror of them central to the thing itself. inescapable#alternatively rather than a two-episode plot; an audio#with the reveal of who was behind it being part of a little mini arc

learn your fucking history
(IMAGE ID: A man sitting in a pew in a church labeled “Modern Who is too political”. Behind him is a person with a gun labeled “Vengeance on Varos’ election subplot”. Behind them is another person with a gun labeled “Genesis of the Daleks’ fascism allegory”. From a hidden corner is a sniper pointing a gun at that person, labeled “Barbara saying trans rights in The Aztecs”.)
#for reference those stories came out in 1985 1975 and 1964 respectively#and that’s barely even scratching the surface of this show’s history of political commentary#there’s the thatcherism arc with a pink tardis#eight saying that he’s never had a gender#three casually mentioning that he’s good buddies with chairman mao of all people#(watching several decades worth of writers for the show try to figure out what to do with that is fun)#nuwho’s gotten in on the fun too since like. aliens of london#i’m not saying it’s perfect but i am saying that i would like to know the definition of political commentary that#exists in the head of people who make these kinds of dumbass complaints#doctor who#classic who#vengeance on varos#genesis of the daleks#the aztecs#barbara wright#with genesis of the daleks it’s not even an allegory as much as it is terrance dicks beating you over the head with theconsequencesoffascis#how the fuck do you miss that
