Sometimes I feel like that window period of someone falling in love with me has passed. It's supposed to happen when you're at your best, with the best to give to the world. Whereas I am at my absolute worst with nothing left inside of me to give. I have become a rotten mess, who wishes they'd met their true potential. In fact right now would have been a great time for the person in love with me to remind me why I am absolutely worth it and that I should get back up. Right now would have been a great time to be reminded of the fact that I have genuinely got it. It sucks that all my life was wasted and not one good relationship or friendship was formed. Not one good career prospect. Nothing. I'll be seven and twenty and no different than how I was at my 16 or 17 or 18. At my absolute low in my absolute worst form, with my mom around to remind me of the worst parts of me. Fuck.

On a stormy day at the start of summer, Frankie reached her turn to age up.

Just as with Maggie, her birthday took the form of an evaluation. Unlike Maggie, Frankie had minimal interest in Lady Mary's and mama's view of her.

"Another beauty," Lady Mary remarked.

"Quite, though it is hampered by the sourness of the demeanour. Frances, uncross your arms and look more Lady-like."

Frankie rolled her eyes as she did what she was told.

"Hmmm.... yes, you will more than suffice," decided Lady Catherine. "Especially if Margaret is able to make a good match. She is finally in a place where we can begin finding her a husband. I hope you can understand, Frances, that we must delay seeking a marriage for you until your sister is married and has birthed her first child?"

"That's fine with me, mama," Frankie replied darkly.

After the evaluation, Frankie headed for the library where a nervous Maggie waited for her. Frankie dropped herself onto the chair with a heavy sigh.

"How was it?" asked Maggie. "Did they approve?"

"Yeah, they approved," replied Frankie grumpily. "I'm ready for marriage and child-rearing, apparently. Though, thankfully, not until you've done it first."

Maggie sighed with relief, "Thank goodness. At least you will not have to spend a season atoning for your sins, as I had to."

"Something tells me that mama will have me atoning for sins for every minute of my existence," groaned Frankie.

Ignoring her sister's usual grumbles, Maggie asked, "So, how does it feel to finally be 'grown up'?"

"So far? It's hideous," Frankie replied, to which Maggie laughed.

"And what about your dreams of endless adventures on the sea?" asked Maggie. "Are you ready to admit to their childish folly yet?"

Frankie grimaced. The truth was that, from the moment she aged up, she did suddenly understand the childishness of her dreams. However, this did not mean she wanted her dreams of adventure at sea any less. For her, growing up had introduced a new type of pain: the knowledge that one's dreams were likely to go unfulfilled.

"Not yet," Frankie replied sullenly.
