I can hear the Collector chanting in a teasing singsong tone, "Uh-oh, Philip likes a girl! Philip likes a girl, Philip likes a girl, Philip likes a girl!" while pointing at Kid Philip and skipping merrily in circles.

Meanwhile, a pouty Philip argues, "Nuh-uh! No I don't!"

Collector: Do too!

Philip: Do not!

Collector: Do too!

Collector: Ha! See? I told ya! (He falls down laughing).

Philip: (His cheeks light up in embarrassment. He then stomps his foot.) Hey, you tricked me!

Collector: (Laughs harder.)

Philip: (Makes a moue expression while crossing his arms). It's not funny! (He breathes out a huff, turning his face away from the Collector).

My one and only friend…

Madeline had never had any friends, even when surrounded by people, she had never felt like she belonged anywhere.

The girls at school hated her and when the teachers forced her to join in she never understood what they were talking about. Not to mention the boys, always bothering her and saying very uncomfortable things about her and her body.

Being a rich girl didn't help her at all because she was always alone, her father was never home, her older brother already had his own occupations, and her mother... her mother was long gone.

Madeline was alone…

Until now…

“I don’t know why you do so much shopping if you live alone” Philip complained as he grabbed a basket of fruit from the counter “Although well, you are rich, obviously you have to waste the money somewhere”

Madeline finally had a friend and that was Philip. Both went on adventures to find a way to return the human to his home on “earth”, although most of the time they spent it doing mundane things like this, buying groceries at the market.

The witch looked at the hunter and a small smile appeared on her face…

Lately she feels happier than usual when she is with him, she gets anxious when he calls her and asks if they can see each other, was this how it felt to be friends with someone?

Was it normal to feel dizzy when he got too close? No, it wasn't dizzy, it was something else. Her heart raced when he smiled at her, when he caressed her head and when he squeezed her hand whenever she felt overwhelmed…

Both teenagers walked to Madeline's house. Philip left the baskets in the kitchen and Madeline gave him a small cake that had finally finished cooling.

“So, I'm off,” the human said as he patted Madeline's head. “I still have to finish the potions.”

“Don't worry, t-thank you so much for joining me shopping,” Madeline replied with a smile.

“Madeline are you a-” a voice spoke from behind the teens.

“Alder… nice to see you” the human forced a smile.

“Hello… Wittebane…” Alder replied with disdain.

Alder looked at his sister and then at the human and immediately scrunched up his face, although the feeling was mutual because the human did the same. There was silence for a few seconds, both men looking at each other, simply telling each other that neither wanted the other's presence there.

“Well… Mady” said the human caressing the witch’s cheek “I’ll call you later” Philip smiled and looked at Madeline sweetly.

This made the witch’s heart race, why did she feel so weird? There it was again, that strange feeling in her stomach, now she felt nervous, what was that warmth in her chest? Is this what it felt like to have friends?

Nothing mattered now, She wanted to be like this forever, just looking at the sky that was inside Philip eyes, she wanted him to caress her forever... she wanted that-

“Okay that’s enough!” Alder raised his voice and pulled Madeline back away from Philip “Go away… please”

Philip simply rolled his eyes, turned around and walked away, leaving the Blight mansion.

Alder watched him go with a frown and even felt a tick in his eye. For Titan he definitely hated that kid, he called him “Alder” as if they were equals, how rude, although he hated more that his little sister was friends with that jerk.

“Hey” the witch called “What’s that smile on your face?” Alder asked his sister, clenching his fists and grimacing.

“How does it feel… how does it feel to have friends Alder?”

“What…?”

“When are you going to meet your friends… does your stomach hurt? Well it doesn’t hurt, but… it feels strange?” Madeline questioned.

“Uh…”

“Oh! And do you feel like your heart is beating faster? Sometimes we hold hands and I… I can hear my heartbeat and not only that!”

Her ears turned red

“Madeline…”

“I like it when Philip grabs my cheeks, he says they are very soft and pretty and it makes me feel very very good!”

Her cheeks turned red

“Madeline”

“Also I… I… I want Philip to dance with me like last time! It felt good when he grabbed my waist and I put my hands on his shoulders, also! Also! His voice is getting deeper and deeper, more masculine and I-!”

“Madeline!” Alder exclaimed “I understand… I understand”

The witch, embarrassed, looked away from her brother, she didn't understand, she didn't know what was happening, maybe she shouldn't feel that way, maybe she should, everything was so confusing and she just wanted the confusion to end. Maybe she had been keeping those things in until she exploded.

“I never felt this way about a friend…” Alder confessed and looked at the witch “however… I did feel this way before I married Nyaara…”

“Oh… it’s okay… I guess…”

Alder looked at his little sister, that lost look, he knew there was a conflict with herself, although in a certain way he understood why it happened. After all, Madeline had never had friends, she didn’t talk to anyone and she was always alone.

Now he felt guilty, his little sister was so alone, that’s why she could never identify how she felt, maybe if he had been there… he always made the excuse that they were 10 years apart, but those were just that… excuses.

“How about we go out to eat today?” Alder asked, this caught the witch’s attention and he smiled “We can go to your favorite restaurant, I’ll pay”

Madeline’s eyes lit up and she nodded happily, she ran to her room laughing.

Paris was never part of our travel plans as Donna and Morgan visited here about 10 years ago. The WW2 beaches in Normandy were however given Bruce’s recommendation from their visit. After researching a few options to travel there, this Viking cruise popped up nicely packaged for us. We start and stop in Paris, a couple stops each way along the Seine with the focus being an 11 hours day on the beaches. Much more about that later.

First, the iconic tower with a small country mouse in the foreground. See her? Looks a bit like Madeline don’t you think?

I always wondered how a seemingly simple steel structure managed to keep interest over 130 years. Gustave Eiffel was a bridge designer who had previously created the Statue of Liberty for New York harbour. He designed and built this temporary attraction for the 1889 World’s Fair.

As we were under the tower booking our elevator ride, we were finally able to grasp the enormity of the structure. Each of the large 4 piers house elevators with 3 levels of viewing and restaurants/shops.

This view from the ground might give you ou a hint of the special nature of the tower that was supposed to be torn down 20 years after the fair.

Constructed mostly of small straight pieces of steel and riveted together, every viewpoint reveals pure artistry.

The following shot was the clincher for me.

This view down from the first observation level revealed what I see as birds wings (at the top of the photo) with the tail extending down to the base of the pier. Too much red wine maybe? Each angle has a new reveal of the brilliance of the geometry. The human ants on the ground give you a sense of scale.

At the time of construction the local artistic community wanted it torn down since they saw it as a blight on the community. Since then it outdraws even the Mona Lisa.

The open nature of the structure with exposed workings and wheels gave Madeline pause for thought (not really😂)

Many Olympic events are well positioned in the old City with the massive beach volleyball stadium seen from above. Canada’s Women play in the finals today!!!! Tune in.

Of course what is a visit to Paris without a local Seine tour.

Reconstruction of Notre Dame is proceeding very quickly after herculean efforts.

After miles of walking and thousands of stairs, Madeleine was out of gas but did not cry

But soon after, bright and pumped for dinner

And a late evening rocking chair session on the bow. Rest up Madeline, tomorrow is Day 2 in Paris.

House of Usher (1960)

It takes a lot of sheer gumption to just straight-up put spooky ghost noises in the soundtrack to your haunted house movie. At key moments throughout this take on an evil house and dying bloodline we hear ladies wailing and moaning, adding to the ambiance. This Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, Roger Corman’s first of many to come, simply drips with atmosphere. From the opening foggy moors surrounding the estate to the decrepit matte painted walls of the home itself, this feels ripped straight out of a storybook. While Christian statuettes and paintings define much of the estate décor, its primary inhabitant Roderick Usher has added some flair to the place with a series of portraits. Each one is more unsettling than the last, a nightmarish tribute to the evils of generations past, all glowing eyes and unnerving grins. Whether the family truly are cursed to the end, or if Roderick is helping his sister Madeline along to madness by locking her away in a casket, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy, the house certainly does have a mind of its own. Objects move of their own accord, and at several points it seems to try to kill Madeline’s visiting fiancé Philip by dropping a chandelier on him or causing a banister to break away. And it always helps to have a spooky skeleton around to really twist the knife. With the appropriate audio accompaniment, of course.

Vincent Price truly is a gift. Always a treat in his Corman collaborations, here he plays equal parts aristocratic and deranged. Unable to eat anything other than gruel and bothered by the faintest sound, Roderick still has no problem inflicting his lute “playing” on others. His calculations and resistance in the face of the naive if good-hearted Philip always create the air that perhaps he’s lying about all of it, everything just a ploy to control Madeline. But a late nightmare sequence where Philip wanders a blue-tinged estate before happening upon the generations of the Ushers beckoning and torturing him in their derangement, Price is there along with the rest of them, gleefully playing up the psychosis. When the estate collapses, closing off this evil lineage and being reclaimed by the tarn next to which it is built, this blight on history is erased.

Talk About True Love

I keep putting this off until I feel like my thoughts are coherent, but they're never going to be coherent lmao

True's Love Caress and True Love's Embrace are a matching pair of rings you loot in Reithwin. Despite the light-hearted item descriptions, the true story attached to them is far more grim. It both foreshadows Aylin's situation and, in my opinion, encapsulates a central theme of Act 2.

Reading "Bonded By Love - Husband's Diary" reveals the husband in question married Miranda, a Sharran cleric. She proposed to him on the eve of battle, officiated the ceremony on the spot, and blessed the rings the two would wear. The husband was elated. What he did not know, however, was the true purpose of the rings. As long as they wore the rings, any wound she received would be reflected onto her husband instead. Miranda could survive wicked battles without so much as a scratch. Meanwhile in Reithwin, every single wound appeared on her husband's body. He never knew the source. No one would tell or help him. The House of Healing sent him away. Finally, it killed him.

And, that's what Act 2 is all about: compassion, in the most fucked up sense imaginable. I mean the root word of compassion — compati: to suffer with. I was taught that pati isn't merely "suffer"; it is "torture". Compati is then "tortured with". In English, compassion has connotation of not merely feeling pity for someone. That alone would be sympathy. It is feeling that pity so keenly that you are compelled to action, for it is as if you suffer alongside them and to end their agonies is to end your own.

Act 2 is about the darker aspects of that. I'm trying to think how to word this . . . It's about compassion being weaponized and taken advantage of. It's in the way you're able to talk all of the Thorms in Reithwin into self-destructing by putting yourself into their shoes for a moment, understanding what makes them tick, and turning that against them. It's in the way He Who Was takes Madeline's soul into his body so that she may be judged for her crimes and the way the guilt of protecting herself at the expense of her friends torments her more than anything else. It's in the way the tadpole connects every cultist at Moonrise and beyond on the deepest level, allowing them to share every experience directly, and the way you would be among their ranks were it not for a fluke.

It's in the way everyone tried to comfort Ketheric after Isobel's death, but his pain ran so deep that he shouldered his torment alone, believing no one could be tormented with him. But, it was a torment too great for one person, so he spread it like a blight across the world. He sought to force them into compassion, into compatior, into being tortured with. So he took the one person for whom Isobel was also their entire world, and rather than take comfort in their mutual grief, he caged her in the Shadowfell. He bound her with a curse that forced her to suffer every blow that should ever be visited upon him and ensured she would be tortured eternally as he was. He led hundreds of people to Shar to lose everything in her embrace as he had already lost everything. He covered the land in an all-consuming darkness that would make undead husks of them just as he felt lost in darkness in twisted mimicry of life since his daughter's death. Then he sold his soul to Myrkul to get Isobel back and in turn stole hundreds, perhaps thousands, of souls by infecting them with tadpoles.

And, he is yet another Thorm you have the option to talk into self-destruction. You can approach him with compassion for his story, and he can be touched by it, making the subsequent fights easier. But, you cannot avoid those fights. It's not that compassion came to him too late. It's that he accepted it too late. He believed his pain was so deep none could touch it — and so none could. So focused on wanting others to feel his suffering that he failed to feel theirs, only inflicted more.

Height: 5′10 Build: Average height, has a sort of stereotypical “scrawny nerd” sort of build with a soft layer of fat/soft belly and not a lot of muscular definition. He has long arms and legs in comparison to his torso which makes him look taller than he actually is. Face Shape: Somewhere between an oval and a diamond, his facial features are fine and delicate with a long straight nose. Eye Color/Shape: Vibrant, unnaturally bright ocean-blue with cat-like slitted pupils. Large but set deep within his face with heavy, tired looking lids and deep dark circles which gives him a sort of permanent “resting bitch face”.  Hair Color/Style: Slate Gray. Laurent’s hair is mostly straight with a slight wave to it (2A) and usually worn tied into a loose ponytail at the nape of his neck. he has long, messy bangs that usually hang in his face. Skin Color/Texture: Very pale and desaturated with a distinct yellow undertone. He has soft skin but has a lot of small scars and marks on his hands from various occult work he did while he was still a mortal. Distinguishing Features: First off, Laurent is prematurely gray. He also has a number of tattoos (a tattoo of a magical circle for protection on his back, another protection sigil on his chest over the heart, has a tattoo of an open eye on the back of his neck). He also wears glasses. Posture: Very “proper” posture -- stands straight up but there’s that slight hunch to his shoulders that comes from hours bent over books and papers. He moves very purposefully and a little bit stiffly with quiet footsteps.  Voice: Soft and understated, with the remnants of a Quebecois accent. Laurent rarely raises his voice and his speech is usually curt and clipped, possibly even seeming rude or sarcastic at times. Clothing Style: Lots of blacks and blues with some cream and charcoal. He tends to wear comfortable clothing that could pass for being formal in most situations -- black slacks, button-downs over v-necks, turtleneck sweaters and cardigans. A lot of his looks vaguely recall the 1980s when it comes to sweater choice.  Notable Mannerisms: Scrunches his nose when he’s thinking deeply about something  but otherwise seems to not have a lot of particularly unique or defining mannerisms (almost purposefully so)

He can pretend to be polite very well (and expects others to behave in a similar way). He prefers things to be well-structured and mostly predictable, he has trouble dealing with sudden intense changes. Birthplace: Suburbs of Montreal, Quebec Childhood: Growing up, Laurent’s parents were usually very busy, both having careers that demanded a lot of their attention. He and Louis were often left to sort of fend for themselves (classic latch-key kids). Being the more shy of the twins, Laurent often relied on Louis to make friends -- having few friends that he could consider his specifically. At around the age of 11, while playing at his neighbor’s house after school with Louis, their friend Alex and his younger sister Madeline, the four of them found a oujia board and did what any group of pre-teens would do: they turned out the lights and used it. Unfortunately for the twins, the house was old and the board itself connected to a rather angry spirit that would attach itself to Louis and scare the hell out of the other three children. This is what would start Laurent’s interest in the occult but it was what would happen the next summer that would cement it as an obsession... While playing in a local park, something that Laurent could neither identify or describe beyond “a writhing mass of eyes, grasping tendrils and eyes” would pluck Alex from the face of existence -- not only taking the 12 year old but erasing any sign that he had ever existed to begin with from the minds of everyone but Laurent. 

Adolescence: At thirteen, Laurent’s family moved to Santa Marta, California. Highschool was difficult for Laurent, who had started to go prematurely gray by the time he was 14 and was shy and bookish. He had to deal with a lot of bullying and it cemented his irritability. 

He did, however, thanks to the unique nature of Santa Marta (attracting the supernatural) manage to make friends with a Witch by the name of Martin. They’d also date for about a year in secret before both decided that it just wasn’t working. However, the pair of them were obsessed with the occult and the presence of the “Old Gods” which were present in constant whispers in Santa Marta. This is where Laurent got into most of the trouble he would as a teenager -- breaking into abandoned buildings looking for ghosts and signs of the supernatural as well as getting 100% illegal tattoos in dangerous settings (most notably, he had his protection sigil done by Martin in his basement along with the eye on the back of his neck).

Somehow, probably just due to luck, Laurent never actually got in legal trouble for any of the crazy shit he did as a teen but that luck wouldn’t last.

Adulthood: In his desperate search for occult knowledge, Laurent would end up crossing paths with a woman named Claudine -- a Nightingale who was also an accomplished occultist and a powerful witch in her own right. He would end up stealing several of her important research journals and end up becoming her “assistant” at the age of twenty-one (she normally would’ve killed him for it but was impressed by his dedication and natural skill). She would keep him on as an assistant, teaching him about the occult and preparing him for life in the Nightingale Court before finally turning him in 2000.

Recent: In 2010, Claudine would disappear suddenly -- leaving behind only a note about her own research into the “thing that lurks beneath the streets of this blighted metropolis” and pointing Laurent in a similar direction. During his training with Claudine, Laurent would run into mentions of the “Myriad Eyes” multiple times, especially when researching the occult history of Santa Marta... A phrase that he quickly came to associate with the thing that had taken his childhood friend.

Currently, he’s running a bookstore in Vista Rosa called “Eigengrau Books” and living in an apartment located above the store.

The Merrill Sessions - Ch. 7: Justice

Summary: Merrill has become something of a community figure in the Alienage. People come to her for help; to learn about the traditions of the Dalish or, sometimes, simply to talk. Recently, she has acquired a kitten. Anders has been keeping more and more to himself. He is working himself ragged in his clinic, his spirits are weighed down by the problems that plague Kirkwall, and his temper is growing ever shorter. He needs help that he isn't asking for. Merril invites him to come look in on her new kitten, and, maybe, to talk. Pairings: Isabella x Hawke, Hawke x Anders (past), Fenris x Anders (eventually), Merrill & Everyone. --

Madeline Hawke. Mad Maddie, or sometimes just Mads. A nickname she’s had since before she knew them, but one she’s only grown into. Washing up like so much debris with the rest of the refugees from Ferelden’s blight, crashing straight into the stone of Kirkwall with nothing but an angry brother and a big honking blade at the end of her poorly disguised staff. She fell into a bed in Anders’ clinic — bleeding, and half covered in blood that wasn’t her own — on her second day in the city. She fell into Anders’ bed, naked and howling and laughing for the thrill of it, on the third. He’s loved her since the moment he laid his amber eyes on her bright blues; most people do.
