Drawlloween 2023 so far…

So each year for the month of Ocotber i take part in a drawing prompt list called Mabs Drawlloween! Its focused on spooky/folklore promptd and its usually my favourite time of year for creativity! I find the prompts push my creativity and have helped create some of my best designs over the years! This year is my 5th year doing it and while its been a struggle so far as i’ve been in a creative rut for the last few months, i feel happy with some of the creations i’ve made so far! Figured i’d share them, so heres the creations for the prompts of witch, werecat, botanical beasts and faerie! 🍄 HUNT FOR THE GIANT HOGWEED 🏹

What do mushrooms hunt with their pansy pups? The botanical equivalent of wild boar of course... Giant hogweed! This is a real flowering plant on Earth that can grow well over 10ft tall, looking like a Queen Anne's lace from Jurassic times. And it IS dangerous, with a sap that will chemically alter your skin so that it burns and blisters when you come in contact with sunlight.

Here we see that only the bravest of mushroom hunters dare seek it out in the depths of Primrose Forest... 🍄

Drawlloween Day 30 - Spooky Scary Skeletons

Just a fast pencil sketch today, I had to clean my attic from after the roof was replaced and that was… quite the job. The entire floor was covered in wood, shingles and nails. More dust than i’ve ever experienced in my life. This was what I had time for today ❤ one day left. I can’t believe I made it.

Mab's Drawlloween Club - Yokai-day

The carcass of a whale is an iceberg-sized mass of unprotected protein. In the wild, 'whalefalls' are a critical food supply that support entire ecosystems in the abyssal zone of the sea. If found beached or hauled ashore, they can be individually large enough to feed a whole fishing village. As such, whales are a prominent part of Japanese nautical folklore.

Bake-kujira is one of these. "Kujira" means whale. "Bake" is part of the names for a variety of yokai and is often translated 'ghostly', but in other contexts may mean 'changing', 'disguised', or as a suffix equivalent to '-ification'. In this case, 'liminal' seems like it might be appropriate (in my very amateur opinion).

The folktale (there is apparently only one) describes the bake-kujira as a skeletal whale carcass, found adrift at sea by whaling boats during a storm. As they got closer, they found that its remains were in some way still alive. The ocean around it teemed with schools of fish, and the sky with flocks of scavenging birds, but strange and unfamiliar ones that experienced anglers did not recognise. On the horizon was a phantom island that shouldn't have been there. Eventually, the whale and its companions vanished back into the sea, never to be seen again, leaving only the speculation that it might be the ghost of a vengeful whale or some strange god of the deep.

In my mind it's half Moby Dick and half The Mist, but older than both and I am obsessed

Spending my Friday afternoon working on the last few days prompts for Mabs Drawlloween drawing prompt list! A few days beind so working on day 10, 11, 12 and 13 (today's) (aka pumpkin, web, toad and Frankenstein)! Normally I'm harsh on myself for falling behind but this year I'm just going with the flow and doing this prompt list at my own pace, even if I'm 4 days behind!

Mab's Drawlloween Club Day 27: I had gone through the rest of my lists and hadn't found a subject I wanted to do, so I landed on the prompt mythological, and rather than Western mythology, I went with the Eastern mythology. It's been a while since I've drawn a Chinese dragon, which are known to be deities of water and air. I used some classic elements of their depiction, but also went with a few of my own. It just fits in the space of the page. Pentel brushpen, Windsor & Newton fine-line marker, and Prismacolor fine-line marker on Canson mixed media.
