Fangs of Fortune & Polyamory
I don't think I've ever seen a drama explore polycules or, dare I say, polyamory in such an effortless and non-toxic manner. The show that came closest to this trope, I think, was the Wachowski's Sens8, but it was more about mind-sharing in various sometimes increasingly intimate ways, which is a different angle altogether.
It's incredible to see a show explore actual human (or demon) relationships and different kinds of love within a team of close people who can be considered as a found family. It also touches upon their other relationships and familial bonds in a lighthearted, but respectful tone that discovers and acknowledges those different types of love, and fondness, and affection. I loved it to the point that I actually found it to be a healing experience for me.
We put so many labels on people and our own different types of loves and affections (along with a society still devoured by numerous taboos about same-sex relationships or about having different types of relationships all at once simultaneously). But that's like… we're doing it anyway (if we allow ourselves some exploration). Some people are like soulmates but you do not necessarily have that physical spark with them. Others may be like that toxic magnet that brings out the primal desire, but you wouldn't be able to build a relationship with them even if your life depended on it. While others, still, are more like friends that sometimes turn into lovers (or vice versa). And it's a whole net of interconnectedness. And it's about love more than anything else (in its various forms).
And I love how the show doesn't even draw those lines, so we don't have very definitive couples as actual couples, we just see people sharing different kinds of bonds and sometimes doing romantic things together (and that equation changes all the time, whether it's M/M or F/F or F/M). And those bonds also differ - they can be deep and important, or painful, or loving and hopeful, or brotherly, and isn't that what human relationships are all about? They don't necessarily fit into some formulas of being 'one and only' or 'till death does us apart', and there can be many important people in our lives - each with a different flavor.
I might not have the mental and energetic capacity to support multiple relationships like that, but this show enlightened me at least to the possibility of those different types of loves that can co-exist with each other and not be mutually exclusive. The beauty of Fangs of Fortune is that they actually showed us how all that can work, setting that tight-knit little family of the Demon Hunting Bureau as an example. Of course, there's lots of drama, and doomed narratives, but this undertone has been evident throughout the whole series and it just made me all warm and fuzzy inside (and wanting to write fics not only about couple relationships, but throuple and, if possible, polycule as well :D).
#fangs of fortune#they put a spell on me :D#fof#polycule is polyculing hard#polyamory#never ever seen a show do this actually#in such a fun and slightly shameless way XD#and also heartfelt and gentle and delicious#still in love with it yep#fangs of fortune meta

Okay, Matrix plagiarism case postscript
One thing I didn't answer is how she got the Wachowski's timeline wrong. I still don't know, but it appears she essentially shifted their lives back a decade
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/77a30e8d0d73ea4d6f4767af4e4d661c/eec937a5bc43d39e-dc/s540x810/2579a6c58f0b6f677d43da5cdaaaec05b5447c3a.jpg)
She says less than a decade ago they were running a construction business, but actually, working at a construction company is what they were doing in 1986. In 1976 Lana and Lilly were eleven and nine years old respectively. I can't explain why she messed this up, beyond having to age them up a decade for the story to work
But this screencap also brings up another thing she mentions repeatedly that I didn't mention - the smoking gun in her claim is that...the Matrix ripped off her words verbatim for its opening crawl. The opening crawl...to The Matrix.
Huh?
So her story is - and unsurprisingly the timeline here is jumbled, for instance, citing production interviews from 1997 when the film wouldn't enter production until 1998 - the original version of The Matrix contained a Star Wars-style opening crawl, and this was the most directly plagiarized part of the film.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/51856bf0128c67b5136cca1b7c845d85/eec937a5bc43d39e-63/s540x810/85b3131660a7449d830279652cf4d62724ec3658.jpg)
She claims this opening crawl was, in fact, in the theatrical release of The Matrix and only removed when it came to home media, because she. Because she called the FBI on the Wachowskis for stealing the idea of opening crawls from her
The theatrical cut does differ from later versions slightly - most infamously the Wachowskis made the green color filter much more green in the second DVD release, to make it consistent with the style of the sequels - but if there was a opening crawl mandated by the studio, nobody but her has mentioned it, and I find it hard to believe critics wouldn't mention it.
Because this is Dark City. She's clearly confused The Matrix with stories about the studio's meddling with the 1998 film Dark City.
Dark City was the dystopian sci-fi film that had a opening narration explaining the whole plot foisted on it by the studio, and critics mentioned it. Basically every review mentioned it (some even suggest covering your ears or muting the film the first time you see it, at least until the Director's Cut removed it). Meanwhile, reviews of The Matrix praised its opening from the very beginning: how it drops you right into things and lets you find out about its world as Neo does. It's just not possible that the theatrical release has a opening crawl no one mentioned when I can pull up full comparisons of theatrical vs first DVD vs second DVD vs Bluray. Whatever story she read either was about Dark City, or was a Wachowski saying in passing "yeah the studio wanted us to add one but we didn't".
Another thing I didn't touch on is just how much it hypes her up as a untouchable genius of cinema. For instance, she claims to have come up with the effects of The Matrix in 1983 too
(one funny part is how little she brings up The Terminator at all? She just threw it in as a bonus I guess)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a31b5aff6ac3059599a39808e9ffdeb8/eec937a5bc43d39e-47/s540x810/3389ff88b9bba7d5ef86f0495c6d063f11ad3d90.jpg)
I looked up how they did the bullet time effect in particular and...it would have been impossible in 1983. It's not just high speed photography; it's entire banks of cameras, placed in the right place by computer previsualization, their sequence programmed, and with all the elements composited together by CGI. Even stylistically - the true creator of the effects cited Akira as a influence, and Akira the movie didn't exist in 1983. Neither did the type of Hong Kong action film that heavily influenced it. I guess it would be possible to write down "someone goes really fast and we depict it like they slowed down time", concepts of a plan etc
But like.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2682411d28337b75ec288108e9fdda8d/eec937a5bc43d39e-ac/s540x810/0a5930ef09ddbd765fcd7f0a283e4a038149a366.jpg)
She's destined to be one of the most profound master writers of the 21st century. This is a book proving she's never written anything. It has a pitch for The Third Eye, it has a second film treatment tacked on at the end, and it has copyright registrations for her sequels to Terminator and The Matrix. M. Night Shyamalan's character in Lady in the Water was destined to be a great writer too, but he actually wrote a book. He didn't put out a book with a decades-old synposis that was never finished & reams of legal documents and a bio saying, I'm one of the greatest authors of all time. Because who needs writing when you have destiny, God, and the ancient superrace living in the Pyramids on your side?
This is my for real last post on this since I ended up just depressed about it in the end. I think the worst part is, she knows she lost. But she still goes to the press telling a story she knows isn't true, and people believe her. Some of it is transphobic - "stop saying it's a trans allegory when they stole it"; some of it runs with the Christian oppression narrative (full disclosure, I was inspired to look for her book again bc while looking up another crank, I saw an interview with her in the sidebar of a religious website); but a lot of it is just people who innocently want it to be true.
One of the few pieces debunking her story is on a website called Black Excellence - it doesn't even have a byline - said this:
"There are many people, especially Black people, who wanted the story to be true. It symbolized a Black person, especially a Black woman, finally winning against the system. When Sophia Stewart spoke about how mainstream media would not give her the time of day because almost all of them were owned by Warner Brothers, some Black media embraced her. Blogs spread her story, especially the initial story on Globe that contained errors about the case.
"But the story is not true. Sophia Stewart did not become the richest Black person in the country. But that did not deter her from going on several shows and publications to tell her story."
She took advantage of people's urge to root for the underdog against a corporation - and seized on a lack of mainstream coverage to claim her story was being suppressed. But it just isn't true. Also yeah she ridiculously claims that Warner Bros owns every news website and newspaper and that's kind of funny I guess. Well, that's it. I'm never doing this again

The best part of any Matrix movie is when the Wachowski Sisters smash cut from a shootout or dialogue scene to the interior of a nasty ass leather bar or S&M dungeon or whatever accompanied by a sick beat drop

Writeblr intro
Last Updated: Mar 2024 So, I realised I hadn't actually written one of these, and I had to fix it!
Name: Magpie, or Shelle, or Michelle.
Pronouns: she/her or xe/xer/xis.
Who: both a writer and an editor!
The Writing: I’ve been publishing since 2011, and I have a bunch of free and paid anthologies I’ve organized, but these are my most important/favourite works.
Except for The Meaning Wars series, all of my books are set in Canada!
The Meaning Wars (complete; And The Stars Will Sing, The Stolen: Two Short Stories, The Meaning Wars, Poe’s Outlaws, A Jade’s Trick, The Meaning Wars Complete Omnibus)
Similar to: Becky Chambers’ A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and Ruthanna Emrys’ A Half-Built Garden
Vibes: Space opera! Found family! Mature (30s) protagonists! Best friends! Sapphic and queer m/f romance elements! Friendly space raptors! Space pirates! A beach episode! Antifascism! Colonization (and inequality issues)! Fighting stuff with democracy and direct action!
The Underlighters (Book 1 of The Nightmare Cycle; Book 2, Monsters and Fools, is complete and in edits. Book 3, The Foundling City, is a current WIP!)
Similar to: Jean DuPrau’s The City of Ember, Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, the Fallout series
Vibes: Coming of age/new adult themes. Spooky monsters. Post-apocalyptic. The importance and warmth of community. Friendship. Struggling with teen problems. Polyamory. Nightmares. Mental health issues. Trauma. Hope. Recycling.
After The Garden (Book 1 of the Memory Bearers Saga; Book 2, Within the Tempest, is also one of my WIPs)
Similar to: Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, The Wachowski sisters’ Sense-8, the Fallout series
Vibes: Found family. Gentle romance. Polyamory (m/f/m). Superpowers without superheroes. Sinister cults and religious extremism. Reincarnation. An alternate future. Adorable giant spiders. Silk-weaving and fiber arts. Post-collapse societal reorganization and politics.
The Loved, The Lost, The Dreaming: A Horror Anthology includes an alternate-ending version of The Underlighters, the novella A Shot of Vodka, and a dozen or so genre-crossing short stories. All of them have spooky elements.
Similar to: Neil Gaiman’s Smoke and Mirrors, Roald Dahl’s Skin and Other Stories (this is not an endorsement of antisemite Roald Dahl; I am antifascist)
Vibes: Underground living. Spooky dolls. Abandoned houses. Queerness. Sinister fey. Nightmares. Lovecraftian eeriness. Here be monsters.
Bad Things That Happen To Girls (Book 1 of the Memory Bearers Saga; Book 2, Within the Tempest, is also one of my WIPs) Possibly my most underrated work, this New Adultish story is a standalone novella about trauma and what happens when life breaks down.
Similar to: Emily Danforth’sThe Miseducation of Cameron Post and Miriam Toews’ A Complicated Kindness
Vibes: Broken family. Abusive mother. Being queer in a small city. Religious trauma. Forbidden cross-cultural love. Teen heartbreak. Coming-of-age. Sisters.

The Editing: I've been a professional freelance editor since 2013, with Top-Rated status on Upwork (a freelancing website) and several hundred books under my belt. (I don't know how many things I've worked on at this point. I've lost count!) Primarily into sci fi, fantasy, horror, and literature (and associated subgenres); enthusiastic about #ownvoices and all kinds of diversity/marginalised representation in fiction.
You don’t have to go through Upwork unless you want to; DM me if you’re looking for an editor who’s knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and gentle. I’m also budget-friendly!
Age: in my 30s.
Queer?: yes. Also poly! Happily married to two people; also have a girlfriend. Not looking for more partners.
Disabled?: yes.
Languages: English mostly, but some conversational Spanish (rusty), scraps of French, tiny bits of German and Irish. All my writing is in English, though.
Location: Southern Alberta, Canada. (Texas + Kansas + Colorado = Alberta, more or less.)
Other hobbies: Knitting, making jewelry, playing Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop games), singing, reading (obviously), learning stuff; playing cello, clarinet, and violin
Interests: Jewelry, gems, metalworking, fiber arts, queer issues and social justice, environmentalism, drinking quite a lot of tea (usually black; I like an assam, Ceylon, or breakfast blends, though Golden Snail absolutely slaps when I’m in the mood for it, and I love Earl Grey Cream as well)
Other internet profiles: *Website * Mailing list * Magpie Editing * Amazon * Tumblr * Mastodon *Facebook * Medium * Twitter * OG Blog* Instagram * Paypal.me * Ko-fi

God, do I feel this when it comes to the Kingdom Hearts series.
I thought that the specifics of memories and darkness in CoM were convoluted but that game's writing was smart enough to not actually focus on them, so it's not distracting while actually playing the game and watching the story unfold, only coming up when you think about it later. KH2 fared slightly worse with its narrative's foundational ideas of data, Nobodies and Ansem, but it still paced those ideas well enough apart and even when they were in play it never focused on them to the extent that they drowned out the characters and the emotion....in other words, the "heart" of the story. And even Days, while the sheer convolution of its take on what a replica is was ridiculous, had the good sense to save that stuff for the last stretch of the game, where enough emotional goodwill had been built up that many players could forgive it (naturally, the cutscene movie version is not as effective.)
But for every game since, the convoluted ideas and twists and connections are all at the forefront of the story. And it's...well, not cool. Which makes it frustrating when I see people thinking it is; in either two senses - in the literal sense of thinking "an idea being overly convoluted and complex = woah, that's deep, man!", or in the ironic sense of "haha, isn't it funny and cool that this series' ideas are so overly convoluted and complex all while Disney characters are running around and even talking about those ideas, so wacky!" And look, IF you fall into that second category, that's fine...so long as you don't pretend it's some objective, deliberate thing on the designers' part and that the series is Good, Actually(TM). Because Nomura has confirmed repeatedly that he's not being ironic, he takes this super seriously and actually believes he's making something with "profound depth" (seriously his words!) So you should enjoy it in the same vein as one tends to enjoy an M. Night Shyamalan or Wachowski Siblings production - they're not making something good like they think they are, but they are making something that's sincerely them that, for better or worse, is unique.

Ok the Wachowskis have to have read this '96 wired Sandy Stone interview, right
Stryker: Then how did you end up involved with personal computers?
Stone: Shortly after Wozniak and Jobs started Apple, I found one of their prototype boards for the Apple II in a dumpster. I had no idea what it was. It was just this beautiful object. I put it up on my wall.
Stryker: You first got your hands on a personal computer by dumpster diving?
Stone: Uh-huh. A few weeks later, a friend of mine who had gotten a job at Apple told me what it was. He agreed to steal some ROM so I could make it work. We scrounged up chips here and there. We found where the traces were defective and fixed them. We needed a power supply, which at this point was very proprietary. It was difficult, but eventually I had my own computer. I began writing programs. One day I accidentally fell into the disassembler and made this kind of intuitive symbolic connection to the machine. It was so intense. The wheels began to turn. I could see the planets moving and the atoms vibrating, and I could see mind with a capital M. I could reach down into the very soul of this thing. I could talk to it. It was this sense of, well, here was the physical machine and here was the virtual machine, the abstract machine. It was a living creature that I could reach into and feel the circuitry. I could feel what the code was like. And I wasn't the only person who experienced this. For many people who tended to be socially inept and quite shy anyway, the quasi-intelligent character of the machine has replaced human social interaction.
Stryker: You treat desire as a movement across a boundary in the attempt to satisfy a need. If boundaries between humans and machines, or between species, or between the sexes, continue to shift or break down, is that the end of desire as we know it?
Stone: That's one of the big questions of transhuman theory and the area that currently most interests me - transgender theory.
Stryker: You yourself are transgendered. Is that a form of reality hacking - you "change sex" by using for your own purposes the codes that regulate how we understand gender and the body?
Stone: The body is an instrument for involvement with others. It's a site for the play of language, a generator of symbolic exchange. The thing that generates the language of social interaction is first and foremost the human body. Body, language, consciousness - they are aspects of the same thing.
