THE FLOOD - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Saban Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A huge hurricane is hitting Louisiana, as the waters rise flooding areas it unleashes a relentless horde of giant hungry alligators. A group of in-transit prisoners and their security guards are redirected to seek shelter in a local police precinct with a prison. As the water infiltrates the police facility they all become prey for these giant flesh-eaters. To survive, the prisoners and guards must band together.
REVIEW: A derelict police facility, a hurricane, a group of vile prisoners, a band of ruthless mercenaries with an agenda regarding one of the prisoners, and finally this congregation of giant alligators and you’ve got the formula for a classic summer “B” movie. It feels like a Cajun take on the classic John Carpenter movie “Assault on Precinct 13,” with a few other elements scrambled into the mix.
The screenplay feels like the type of film American International Pictures and Roger Corman used to churn out back in their haydays. One can’t help but draw comparisons to 1976’s “Assault on Precinct 13” and the numerous films that have addressed the terrors of the order of Crocodylia, which includes alligators, crocodiles and gharial. Sheriff Jo Newman tries to hold everything together as the mercenaries show up and pindown the officers and prisoners in the cell block. They are unaware that the alligators have already breached the facility and taken out one obnoxious deputy and one not so skilled mercenary. Veteran film fans can probably predict the majority of the plot and how things turn out. Many of the prisoners are kind of cliched stereotypes, as is their dialogue. Still, it's not offensive and a fun piece of mindless entertainment even though there are some flaws in the film’s logic.
The sets are fine, the costumes okay, some of the cinematography is a bit blurred, especially the underwater effects and darker scenes. There were scenes where you could tell the rain was cgi and a few of the reference shots they used as transitions. The alligators are clearly cgi, although there might be a few images that are live gators, but I didn’t see a wrangler listed in the credits so I doubt it. I did appreciate the detail in the gator choreography when they attacked and held onto their victims. They clearly did the homework. Likewise, there were a few gunfire sequences where the gun bursts weren’t lined up properly and you could tell they were not discharging their weapons.
I think the cast did a solid job with the material they were given. I enjoyed Nicky Whelan’s performance. She elevated the character and could easily be a new Linda Hamilton or Sigourney Weaver if the right role presented itself as she handles the action rather well. Veteran actor Casper Van Dien plays Russell Cody, a sad sack of a cop killer with this hard luck story that the sheriff takes a shine to. It never becomes this full on romance but close and Van Dien does his best with an awkward role. The rest of the cast keeps the energy level up and allows the film to be watchable, but not memorable.
THE FLOOD is the perfect summer drive-in movie, unfortunately there aren’t many drive-ins and they mostly play classic revivals. The plot didn’t hold any surprises and I found it predictable. I was rooting for Sheriff Jo Newman, but I was also rooting for the gators. I was also cheering when they got the obnoxious deputy. There is no sex or nudity, and given the crimes of the prisoners I would have figured a bit more adult language. Even the gore seemed a tad underplayed by some of today’s expectations of genre films. Still, if you’re looking for something to help you take your mind off the summer heat THE FLOOD might offer you some relief.
CAST: Casper Van Dien, Nicky Whelan, Louis Mandylor, Kim Delonghi, Devanny Pinn, Ryan Francis, Eoin O’Brien, Randall J. Bacon, and Randy Wayne. Joe Manchin
Tumblr media
Physique: Average Build Height: 6’ 3" (1.91 m)
Joseph Manchin III (born August 24, 1947-) is an American politician and businessman serving as the senior United States senator from West Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010. Manchin was the 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and the 27th secretary of state of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. Manchin has called himself a "centrist, moderate, conservative Democrat" and is generally cited as the most conservative Democrat in the Senate. Before entering politics, Manchin helped found and was the president of Enersystems, a coal brokerage company his family owns and operates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Judging a book by it’s cover. Manchin has a kinda corrupt, sleazy look about him. And that is what pushes him from ‘attractive’ to downright 'sexy.’ A little thin for my tastes, but I would be more than willing to overlook it whilst he was fucking me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Born in Farmington, West Virginia, a small coal mining town. He is the second of five children of Mary O. (née Gouzd) and John Manchin. He entered West Virginia University on a football scholarship in 1965, but an injury during practice ended his football career. Manchin graduated in 1970 with a degree in business administration and went to work for his family's business.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Manchin is married to Gayle Heather Conelly and together they have three children: Heather Manchin Bresch, Joseph IV, and Brooke. My 'loves to fuck’ theory is in play here. Plus, he has a houseboat. So my boat fantasies are in play too. Hmm… he's a close friend of Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban. There's my in to fuck Saban.

Aca Top 10: 80s Cartoon Themes — VoicePlay music video
youtube
The VoicePlay boys might technically be grown-ups, but they'll always be big kids at heart. So for their first "Aca Top 10" countdown of the year, they decided to revisit the joy of Saturday mornings spent in front of the TV with bowls of sugary cereal. Everybody sing along!
Details:
title: Aca Top 10 — 80s Cartoon Themes
original songs / performers: "La La Song" by the cast of The Smurfs (1981); [0:18] Inspector Gadget (1983) theme song; [0:35] Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) theme by Chuck Lorre; [0:57] Scooby-Doo theme by Larry Marks; [1:16] G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1983) theme; [1:36] Adventures of the Gummi Bears (1985) theme by Joseph Williams; [2:03] Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (1989) theme by Jeff Pescetto; [2:24] My Little Pony (1986) theme; [2:34] "JEM – Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous" by the singing cast of Jem and the Holograms (1985); [2:55] The Transformers (1984) theme; [3:14] "DuckTales" by Jeff Pescetto for DuckTales (1987)
written by: "La La Song" by Hoyt Curtin; Inspector Gadget theme by Shuki Levy & Haim Saban; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme by Dennis C. Brown & Chuck Lorre; Scooby-Doo (1969) theme by David Mook & Ben Raleigh; The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries (1984) theme by Hoyt Curtin; G.I. Joe theme by Ford Kinder & Spencer Michlin; Adventures of the Gummi Bears theme by Michael & Patty Silversher; Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers theme by Mark Mueller; My Little Pony theme by Ford Klinder, Anne Bryant, & Barry Harman; "JEM – Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous" by Barry Harman; The Transformers theme by Ford Kinder & Anne Bryant; "DuckTales" by Mark Mueller
arranged by: VoicePlay
release date: 30 March 2018
My favorite bits:
kicking things off with an extra dramatic fanfare
Layne's incredible ratchet sound and miming for the safe's lock dial in the Inspector Gadget theme
Earl giving an excellent Dr. Claw impression
the couch trio doing enthusiastic karate chops at the air 🥷 🐢
J.None taking over the bass line while Geoff sings lead
Layne making the pew-pew noises of the G.I. Joe lasers
Eli, Earl, and J delighting in how springy the couch cushions are at the start of the Gummi Bears theme
Layne and J crooning ♫ "my little brony" ♫ at Geoff while he scowls until he can't resist smiling anymore 🐎
Earl half-heartedly protesting at Eli and J singing the Misfits' part of the Jem! theme whlie he's wearing their signature colors / print
all the electronic-sounding elements they added to the Transformers theme
♫ "here in… Duckburg" ♫ ::quack:: 🦆
Gotta get in a bell chord somewhere, and that's a very good spot.
finishing on a joyful ♫ "Woo-ooo!" ♫
Eli quietly playing with a Transformer and Earl's enthusiastic "Cowabunga, dude!" in the outro

Trivia:
○ This was the first full-length video released on VoicePlay's YouTube channel in 2018. They started the year with a short video of "Happy Birthday", in between two collaborations they had recorded the previous fall that are on other channels — "Waving Through a Window" with Kurth Hugo Schneider, and "Look What You Made Me Do" with pocket.watch.
○ According to their replies to some YouTube comments, there was quite a debate about which songs to include or not, and "Thunder Cats was about a 2 hour argument. Shoes were thrown." 😆
○ Despite being very recognizable as The Smurfs theme, the version of the "La La Song" with lyrics was only used for the show's opening credits during season 2 in the U.S. However, an instrumental version was used for the closing credits from then on.
○ At least one of the guys came by his martial arts moves honestly. Eli studied karate from age six until he was sixteen.
○ For the Scooby-Doo theme, VoicePlay combined the original 1969 song from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? (which was still airing in reruns) with some jazzier elements from the 1984 New Scooby Doo Mysteries opening.
○ The silliness in the YouTube description for this one is another misheard lyric — "JIM is truly outrageous / Truly Truly Truly outrageous / Woh oh oh JIM - JIM!!!" // "That's such a weird song. Who the heck is Jim anyway..?"
○ The guys' shirts reflect some of their childhood favorites:
Eli — Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales half-buried in the gold pile in his money vault with the inscription "living the dream"
Earl — Ultimate Warrior (WWF / WWE) facepaint, sort of referencing Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling, though the show was cancelled before that character could appear; bonus charteuse zebra-print leggings for The Misfits from Jem! and the Holograms
J.None — face masks of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which aired into the mid-90s for the younger guy)
Geoff — Autobot mask symbol from The Transformers
Layne — Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony (a slight cheat with a character from the 2010s series, but probably inspired by one or more of his daughters). I cannot for the life of me figure out where that specific design came from, but I found a couple close-ish approximations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
○ Layne posted some videos of both the final rehearsal and cleanup process on his Instagram.

Alabama Triumphs Over South Florida in Unconventional Clash
By Joseph Correa
Follow @Frontproofmedia!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id))(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');
Tampa, Fla.: Alabama's clash with South Florida was a rare spectacle, defying the traditions of Coach Nick Saban's tenure. Saban's Crimson Tide had never ventured into non-Power Five territory for an away game, setting the stage for intrigue.
In this atypical showdown, Alabama clinched a 17-3 victory at Raymond James Stadium, courtesy of a late touchdown by Ty Simpson.
Quarterbacks were again in the spotlight as Tyler Buchner made his Alabama starting debut, later relieved by Ty Simpson.
The night's hero was senior running back Roydell Williams, who delivered a career-best performance with 129 rushing yards and a crucial touchdown.
Yet, the true stars illuminated the defensive ranks. After a turnover-less bout against Texas, Alabama's defense roared to life against USF, securing a pivotal forced fumble and interception. The Bulls were stifled on four separate fourth-down attempts.
Malachi Moore's fourth-quarter interception set up Alabama's final scoring drive. A defensive powerhouse, Dallas Turner forced a fumble and racked up 2.5 sacks. The defense conceded only a first-quarter field goal due to a special teams mishap by Kool-Aid McKinstry.
With this win, Alabama stands at 2-1 this season, ready to embark on SEC play against Ole Miss next Saturday.
In summary, Alabama's venture into non-Power Five territory defied convention, yielding a victory even if it wasn't the most impressive of performances. Stellar defensive plays, Ty Simpson's emergence, and Roydell Williams' brilliance leave Crimson Tide fans with much to savor as they brace for SEC challenges.

(Repost) POWER/RANGERS (2015) fan film shows why grim-dark is grim-dumb
Tumblr media
Note: This article was originally posted February 25th, 2015 on the Agony Booth, which I used to write for. Since that site is sadly no longer with us, I’m reposting my old articles here.
If you’ve been following my writing for a while, you’ve probably picked up that I detest hollow, needlessly cynical, faux-mature “gritty” reimaginings of once colorful and optimistic characters and franchises. It’s a juvenile, self-absorbed misunderstanding of the entire concept of maturity to think that simply being darker makes something better or more complex. And seeing grown men constantly demanding a beloved franchise become more “adult” simply to soothe their own insecurities about still liking something intended for children only robs it of everything they enjoyed about it in the first place.
Lately, the studio most guilty of this trend is Warner Brothers, as you can see in basically every DC superhero film made this century. But they’re far from alone. Star Trek and Spider-Man have gotten the same treatment, and Fantastic Four is next in line. It seems just about everyone outside of Marvel Studios have decided that superheroes just aren’t allowed to be fun anymore.
So with the promise of a Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movie in 2016, I can’t help but become anxious as I wait to see what form the film will take. Will Saban elect to stick to the fun (if campy) tone that’s kept the TV series going for more than two decades now? Or will they bow to blockbuster trends and give us a drab, joyless, self-conscious drag? Only time will tell.
In the meantime, however, we’ve been given an unexpected gift: a glimpse at a possible future, and a worst case scenario for how a “dark and gritty” Power Rangers movie could end up. Joseph Kahn, the offbeat, eccentric genius behind Torque, Detention, and the best music video Taylor Swift ever made, has released a 12-minute fan film entitled POWER/RANGERS, and like everything else Kahn has done, it’s... something else.
It shows a dystopian future in which Earth has been taken over by the Machine Empire (if you don’t know your Power Rangers lore, the Machine Empire is... well, exactly what they sound like). The Rangers are all grown up and their lives have gone horribly wrong. Blue Ranger Billy has become a weapons manufacturer, Yellow Ranger Trini is dead, Red Ranger Jason was murdered after his wedding to Pink Ranger Kimberly by Bulk and Skull (who later OD on meth), Black Ranger Zack is a fitness guru that spends all his time doing hookers and blow, and Green Ranger Tommy is a wanted man living on the streets.
The main focus is on Kimberly (played by eternal fancasting favorite Katee Sackhoff), who’s being interrogated by Rocky (played by unicorn slayer James Van Der Beek), formerly the second Red Ranger and now an agent of the Machine Empire. Rocky wants to capture Tommy, as he’s suspected of murdering the other Rangers. To say any more would be to spoil the film (in as much as you can spoil a 12-minute movie), but suffice to say, it doesn’t end well for anyone.

I have to admit, the film threw me the first time I watched it. Being already worn out by so many grimdark reboots of things I love, and apprehensive about the possibility of the same happening to my beloved Power Rangers, the whole thing felt almost like a slap in the face.
Watching Bulk and Skull, two of the most enduring, lovable characters in the show’s history, being portrayed as foul-mouthed white trash who sell out the human race to aliens, murder their friends, and then die of drug overdoses was basically the equivalent of watching Winnie the Pooh go postal on the Hundred Acre Wood. But after watching it through a few more times, it became clear that what I was seeing was not meant to be taken remotely seriously. It’s a Joseph Kahn film, after all. In his own words in the video description, this is his “take on the FAN FILM”.
In an interview with HitFix, Kahn had this to say.
Kahn:
I’ve seen repurposed stuff on the Internet where they take a property that’s serious and make it even more so, like a Batman fan film or something like that, or a video game or whatever. I’ve actually seen stuff like where they’ve taken ridiculous stuff like Mario Brothers, and then tried to make the dark and gritty version, and they obviously play it for laughs. I think the trick that I really wanted to do with this was to make that dark and gritty version that everybody keeps talking about, but really do it. Really see if I could totally accomplish it with essentially a really incredible, incredibly silly property.
In that context, POWER/RANGERS makes a lot more sense. He’s making fun of the fad of grit-ification but taken it to its furthest extreme by playing it completely straight. It’s a commentary not just on the film industry, but also on fan films themselves. I’ve watched plenty of fan films before, and I know that what Kahn is saying is true: many of them take themselves far, far too seriously. In fact, a grimdark Power Rangers fan film was released not long ago, only without any of the irony of Kahn’s version.*
(*I can no longer find the video I was talking about, use your imagination ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
So the fact that Khan’s film is meant as a joke is clear. How effective a joke is debatable, however, because the reactions to this thing have been all over the place. For fans like myself, either the joke didn’t register, or it did and they just didn’t like it. Many others, who either aren’t fans or only casual fans who haven’t watched the show since they were kids, took the thing 100% seriously and seem to think it’s the greatest idea ever. All over the internet, headlines are calling it “badass”, and commenters are saying this is exactly what they want the actual Power Rangers movie to be.
For me, this raises questions about the very nature of satire. To what extent is a comedian responsible when people don’t get the joke? This isn’t a new issue; Remember last year, when Stephen Colbert got called a racist for a joke on his show that went completely over the heads of certain people? Or how about all those guys who saw Fight Club and then went out and formed actual fight clubs, completely missing that the movie was a condemnation of that sort of empty macho posturing?
It’s hard to find fault with the film in this case, because arguably making the point any more explicit would be to compromise it. Part of the joke is that, for the most part, there’s no winking at the camera or transparent self-awareness. It’s taking the most over-the-top extremes and being completely serious in their presentation, which is, in and of itself, the joke. This isn’t a Robot Chicken sketch. It’s an experiment to show just how far the idea of a dark and gritty reboot can go and why it’s ultimately a dumb and futile enterprise.
So I can’t really fault Kahn for being too subtle. At the same time, much like Fight Club, it’s really hard to enjoy the film as a piece of satire, simply because the reaction to it irks me. All I can think is, “A lot of people out there actually, unironically want this,” and the thought just depresses me. If taking this concept to its worst extreme doesn’t show people what a terrible idea it is, what could? And what if Saban and Lionsgate take the response to Kahn’s fan film as a sign that there’s a market for this vision of Power Rangers, and take the actual film in this direction? It’s not out of the realm of possibility. Remember those awful Mortal Kombat web shorts Kevin Tancharoen made that landed him a job making a real Mortal Kombat feature film? (Sure, it didn’t end up happening, but still.)
Joseph Kahn will not be making a Power Rangers movie. He’s openly said he has no interest in it, and that’s for the best. A feature-length version of POWER/RANGERS would be utterly pointless. The joke works as a simple short film, but dragging it out for two hours would get old fast. Better that he’s free to pursue his own projects and interests, and I’m excited to see what he does next. In the meantime, he’s certainly left us with something to think about, if nothing else.
Final thought: I believe the most telling and interesting thing about POWER/RANGERS is that when you get down to it, it’s not really any more “mature” or “adult” than the actual show, despite its aesthetic shift. It may not be safe for kids anymore, but it’s still (very deliberately) mindless junk food. The characters are just as flat and devoid of personality, the premise is just as silly, and the plot is just as nonsensical and formulaic. It’s still mainly an excuse to watch people fight in rubber suits. The only real upside is that the acting is generally better, and the effects are vastly improved. That’s pretty much the film’s ultimate lesson: simply making something darker and more realistic doesn’t improve shit. If anything, it just makes it dumber.
