I think I figured out my biggest problem with “The Mandalorian” season 3. I mentioned in a previous post that I have issue with this season’s lack of focus and constant subplots that are muddying up the main narrative. Now that I think about it, I think the bigger problem is that the show feels too safe and wants to remain safe.

What I mean is that it feels like Favreau and Filoni don’t want to shake things up in the show. They’re still doing these one-off episodes where Din and Grogu get involved in some conflict that gets resolved by the end of the episode. It feels like the show could be something more, it’s just the showrunners don’t want to stray away from the formula. Because of that, it feels like there’s a lot of potential not being explored here.

For example, I didn’t mind that Grogu decided to return to Din after being taken away by Luke Skywalker…at first. Now it feels like we missed the chance to really develop Din as a character. Imagine a whole season where Din is forced to be on his own, trying to figure out how to move forward without Grogu by his side. Sure, the Mando fanbase would be sad, but imagine how much character development and growth there’d be for Din. And another reason why I have a problem now with Grogu returning to Din after only two episodes apart is that season 3 really should’ve just been about Din and Bo-Katan.

(EDIT: Also, it’s not like Grogu can’t just come back by the end of season 3)

Since this season is centered on uniting the Mandalorians, Din and Bo-Katan should’ve just been the main leads. Grogu doesn’t even feel central to the plot here, they really could’ve written this season without him. Who knows, maybe that was the original intention, but Disney or Lucasfilm stepped in and said, “Hey, don’t separate Pedro Pascal from the green alien that makes us money”.

But with that said, I can’t give Favreau and Filoni a pass either. They’re also at fault since they packed this entire season with weird one-off side stories (the giant bird episode) and subplots that are clearly meant to build up a different show (episode 3). Then, every time it feels like the show is picking up momentum, like when Din, Grogu, and Bo go to Mandalore, they immediately undercut it by having the next episode be about something else. I’m like, this is not how you build a story, you have to keep the momentum going, especially since there’s only eight episodes this season.

It’s really hard to say that Mando S3 is a bad season because it’s technically not. I do like the Din and Bo partnership storyline. The story makes sense and is easily the most compelling plot thread of the season. My issue is that it feels like the writers are holding themselves back. They don’t want to stray too far from what’s familiar (Din being dad to Grogu, the goofy side stories), so every time the show feels like it’s taking a big step forward, they immediately backtrack. It’s like the storyline wants to be “Andor”, but the writers are afraid of going full “Andor”, if that makes sense.

Maybe Disney is scared they’ll lose viewers if the show takes too many big steps away from what’s familiar and that they’ll experience another “Last Jedi” backlash. Which is ironic since viewership went down this season anyways. And no, I’m not one of those people blaming Bo-Katan for the drop. I’m putting the blame squarely on the writing because of the reasons above.

Imagine Cobb Vanth with a popular online ghost hunting show, starring his skeptic partner Boba Fett and their loud, bizarrely confrontational friend Paz Vizla; directed by Fennec and Exceedingly Reluctantly filmed by Din Djarin, talented photographer and Dad Who Just Wants a Dad Nap.

Enter Luke Skywalker, a hobbyist mechanic and disillusioned fortune teller who gained internet infamy by being repeatedly interviewed and mocked by ghost debunkers who, through creative editing, made this kind, earnest, gifted young man look like a delusional lunatic that believes he's "special."

Boba offers Luke a stupid amount of money to appear on his boyfriend's channel, so Luke reluctantly accompanies them to an abandoned hospital, where he has lost all fucks when it comes to making people think he isn't crazy, and uses his psychic abilities so nonchalantly and dismissively he's basically gaslighting the whole crew.

Cobb: What the fuck is that?!

Luke: *on the floor of the decayed children's ward, clearly rolling a ball back and forth with an invisible entity* What do you mean?

Boba: All our equipment is saying someone is here. We literally just heard a child say "Let's play, Luke."

Luke: *Now gently tossing a ball back and forth with the entity* That's wild, man.

(Din: You, uh... you look really pretty in this lighting.

Luke: You're too sweet! Also, your son definitely sees ghosts.

Din: What?

Luke: :)

Poor Luke ostracized when all he wanted was to help people and understand his strange abilities because people were jerks. Then he gets dragged into this growing in popularity show (Ryan and Shane!!) on youtube and is just trying to play it cool, trying not to take the attention, trying to just be "ah, yeah, this is....a thing" as spirits either try to just get his attention or are literally trying to steal him away to the Beyond.

And just him casually playing catch with something invisible and everyone is freaking out...except for Din who (is sorta used to it with his son who does weird things from time to time, isn't that normal???) is like dreamily sighing to himself as he continues to just film Luke and not the star of the show.

Cobb and Boba have to sit down and talk with him because, "my guy...this is sad."

Din doesn't get it...he just thinks Luke's very pretty as he talks with someone who isn't there but they keep getting really scary voices on recordings. Is it his fault?? No!

And oh, Luke was a different kid himself? Maybe he can talk to Grogu to help him feel better!

Everyone is trying to make him understand that Luke is an actual psychic, and so his is son, but Din just keeps trying to make dinner plans.

My reasonings:

10. Plo Koon: One of my only favourites on the council. Brought Ahsoka into it. It was hard to see him get offed so quickly

9. Luke Skywalker: An original character. Legend in Mandalorian. Would've been more upsetting if he had a warriors death and a better final movie.

8. Ben Solo: Preferred him over Rey. Shipped Reylo.

7. Padmé Armdella: Her death caused Anakin to go dark side, his reaction once Palpatine told him hurt me so much.

6. Obi-Wan: An actual icon. Loved him so much. Didn't really have much of a role in ANH. Would've been better if it was Ewan.

5. Han Solo: Cried. Unexpected. Favourite character in originals and sequels. Chewies reaction killed me. Never got over his death.

4. Qui-Gon: 🙌🙌. Loved his character and actor. His death his the reason Anakin turned evil. Only realised recently that Obi-Wan HUGS HIM while he dies.

3. Caleb Dume (Kanan Jarras): Cried. Shipped him with Hera so hard. He sacrificed himself for her ♥️♥️. Loved him so much and he was the greatest Jedi master. His force ghost with Hera made my heart SWOON. Also how his blindness disappeared so he actually saw Hera before he died 😭😭😭.

2. Anakin Skywalker: Loved Anakin, even more so when watching Clone Wars. So sad to see Palpatine manipulate him. Would've cried in ROTS when he died but I was like 8 so I didn't understand. Now it's more emotional because TIKTOK/YOUTUBE EDITS. CW made it so much worse. So heartbreaking to see the greatest Jedi fall. Ahsoka's reaction in CW S7 and Rebels S2 is painful.

1. "Darth" Maul Opress: Cried. Officially my favourite character. I am confidently an ObiMaul shipper. So seeing him die at Obi-Wan's hand hurt. Even more so when Obi-Wan cradled his body and shut his eyes for them. So, Mauls last memory is Obi-Wan hugging him. He was also given a Jedi funeral from Obi-Wan. It hurts when you see Obi-Wan didn't want to kill him but had to because ✨Luke Skywalker✨. Loved Maul, didn't deserve death but at least his last memories is 1) reassurance that Luke will bring balance to the force and 2) Obi-Wan holding him.
