A plant of the tropical forest floors of Southeast Asia Ludisia discolor (black jewel orchid) is tolerant of lower light levels. Mainly grown as a foliage houseplant it does produce tall clusters of white flowers which contrast with the dark foliage.

Since I mentioned it, here’s Ludisia discolor blooming on the windowsill. This plant is mostly grown for its lovely, velvety foliage, but I think the blooms are cute too.

My Jewel Orchid (Ludisia discolor).

Unlike a lot of other orchids this one can and should be planted in soil.

I've had multiple pots of this one, because they are also very easy to multiply with cuttings. I tend to give them away as presents now and then.

They also unfailingly bloom around Christmas every year. Unfortunately they don't really have a scent.

The shiny velvety leaves are beautiful all year round.

I am so freaking feral about orchids, you guys, please help. QQ It's becoming a problem. Anyway, meet my orchids:

This is my favorite phalaenopsis orchid in terms of color! I just really love the wine-red splotches on a white flower. Apparently this particular sort is a very prolific bloomer and is always shooting up spikes. I've only had her for a week or so and just repotted her recently, so I look forward to finding out!

This is my most recent acquisition - I got her for a measly $7 (pot included) at Lowes because the entire spike except for this very very bottom flower had been snapped off at some point! I've good luck re-blooming phals and I really love the soft violet and orange color combination, so I had to nab her.

THIS orchid, on the other hand, I have had since last November, and she is still holding onto the same flowers, which seems absolutely insane to me. In fact, I'm pretty convinced that the flowers that she did drop, she would still have if I hadn't given faulty instructions to my plant-sitter, which led to her and another orchid getting dehydrated and dropping half their blooms. Eight months of blooms! And no signs of stopping! And she's growing plenty of healthy new roots AND a new leaf!! I love her and I love how bright and cheery her flowers are.

These are my last two phalaenopsis orchids. The one on the left is a miniature that blooms purple. She's bloomed twice for me, but she was double-potted with a second orchid, and I was inexperienced and killed a lot of her roots while repotting her, so she's been recovering from that for like half a year. If you look closely, you can see that she's actually just started growing a new leaf, which I'm really excited for!

On the right is a very classic white phal that my mom gifted me. She's also bloomed twice for me, and is also in the middle of growing a new leaf. :)

These are my two oncidium orchids, which have since been repotted and mostly lost their blooms! I got the one on the left also heavily discounted because her blooms were already falling, but as you can see in the photo, she's literally in the middle of growing a new flower spike, haha. The one on the right is currently almost done blooming, and she might be my favorite of all because she's SUPER fragrant and smells amazing!

This is my Ludisia discolor, a terrestrial jewel orchid that I'm really excited to see unfurl her new leaf! She's in a lower-light area of my house and I'm hoping she does well there. If not, I have a different shelf I can move her to later with artificial lights.

And these are some baby Macodes petola cuttings I bought, lightning jewel orchids! The reason people grow them for their foliage is a little more visible in photos than it is with Ludisias, but still not true to real life - the white patterns on both actively sparkle under light! It honestly looks like they've been doused in glitter. These guys are all in sphagnum moss in hopes of rooting them. The cuttings were honestly much smaller than I thought they'd be when I bought them, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm keeping them under a glass cloche for humidity as well!

And that's it! Just wait until my violets and streptocarpus start blooming, though, haha. I just. Really love plants.

Orchid haul from this weekends show at Krull-Smith!

I really wanted to buy some jewel orchids from Tropical Exotics - same vendor i got the dendro. Thai Pearl from - but I wasnt confident in my ability to not kill a $30 jewel thats so tiny :,)

Next time I see them at the next show I’m going for their stand first to buy a Milky Way. And maybe a Sandstone or two. Maybe three milky ways. I gotta start saving….

More about Juliet's parents

I'll be spilling a bit more of them here just so peeps can know a bit of their story:

First off, their full names is Alan Miles Luce and Catalea Ludisia (nickname: Lea)

They met when both were in highschool, specifically at a skating park where Lea, who was roller skating, accidentally crashes into young Alan who was just passing by. Due to that first interaction they became friends and discovers that they go to the same school.

Lea hang alot with Alan mainly just to help her study (because she needs to please her parents after trying to neglect it) and due to those study sessions, they became close up until college came

Since Lea is a curious soul and loves a good mystery around the town, Alan suggest that she takes criminology in college.

Oh right, I forgot to tell about their family. Catalea came from a rich family who owns a really well known corporation while Alan came from a middle class family, who has a lumbering business. They don't really care about his education so he left his home and tries to support himself.

When college ended, that's where Lea decided to runaway from her home due to her parents being very strict and controlling of her life. So finally, she would be able to be herself, and live with a person she really trust.

They move much farther away to avoid any contact from Lea's parents, and work according to the profession they've studied in college. Lea as an investigator and Alan as an accountant.

Lea also opened up a flower shop, because she thinks "eventhough they're all different, they're beautiful and special in their own way."

Not too long after, they have their daughter, Juliet.

But not even a year later Juliet was born, Lea got hit by a speeding car during a rainy day, not being able to survive it due to the strong impact.

After the events of that, Alan decides to move to somewhere more rural and safe to raise Juliet. And since then it's just them two. Alan was still mourning for his partner's lost while Juliet was growing up.
