Looking for Alaska

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Looking for Alaska (2019, USA)
Directors: Sarah Adina Smith, Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Brett Haley, Ami Canaan Mann, Clea DuVall, Megan Griffiths, Rashaad Ernesto Green & Josh Schwartz
Writers: Josh Schwartz, Warren Hsu Leonard, Stephanie Savage, Ashley Wigfield, Kirk A. Moore, Leila Gerstein & Kendall Rogers
Mini-review:
There are a lot of good book-to-movie/TV adaptations. However, there is something that's a lot rarer: an adaptation that improves on the original in pretty much every way. Looking for Alaska is one of those. Going for a miniseries instead of a movie means that everything is much more fleshed out, from the characters to the setting and the themes. The show also perfectly captures the atmosphere of the novel. I've always felt that atmosphere was what made this book so special and popular, and this adaptation made me feel exactly the same. I must admit, though, I still don't like Miles as a lead character, like at all. But, since the other characters get as much focus as him, I didn't dislike him as much as I did in the book.
What's more, the cast is absolutely spectacular. They all nail their roles. I seriously can't think of many teen movies/shows with such fantastic acting. Kristine Froseth and Denny Love are particularly showstopping and I was really surprised (and disappointed) to see they didn't get any award nominations. They're truly that good. Lastly, I want to talk about the setting. I just loved Culver Creek, the pranks, the locations, everything. I honestly wish they would have turned this into some sort of anthology where we follow a different set of Culver Creek students in each season. Seriously, the setting has so much potential. Anyway, this is easily one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen, and I'm really glad I decided to watch it.

So I was listening to the radio the other day and the song “Hey There Delilah” came on and it reminded me of Diavolo’s mom (cuz her name is Delilah duh!! 😛) I started to listen to the lyrics very closely and I was like “omg! It’s KINDA giving DK and Delilah, just a little bit đŸ€â€ especially in the beginning where it goes—
“What's it like in New York city?
I'm a thousand miles away
But, girl, tonight you look so pretty
Yes, you do
Times Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear, it's true”
(NYC = Celestial Realm // Thousand miles away = he’s in the Devildom and she’s in the CR // Times Square = something in the celestial realm??)
It got me wondering

Would DK write a song about his Delilah, in secret while she was an angel, when he fell or was falling for her? (And maybe Faust finds it and teases him about it lol)
Idk but I feel like DK was the first to fall, bc yk how Diavolo, a demon like his father, was mesmerized by Lucifer’s beauty when he first met him and also Luci and Delilah were angels so it makes me think it’s probably a ‘like father, like son’ kind of thing đŸ„Ž but I could be wrong đŸ€·â€â™€ïž (I’m getting a little delulu and excited thinking about how they fell in love)
[Btw I went through the DK and Delilah tags and I have so many questions about their love life with each other that it makes me excited for the comic to be updated but ik ur busy and you have other things to do so I’ll be patient even if it takes like 5 years đŸ«Ą they are just so cute together and I love ur comic đŸ«¶ (also sorry for how long this is 😭)]
So DK wouldn’t write a song mostly because he’s no song writer so making lyrics would be an up hill battle and he’s a shy singer. I’ve mentioned it a question which is probably lost in the sauce now, but DK isn’t confident in his singing. He’s not bad, but doesn’t believe he’s any good. I imagine something like Joel Last of Us, but deeper.
I’m sorry I can’t get out the comic in a more timely fashion, but I’ll do my best.

Conrad Veidt
Actually Hans Walter Conrad Veidt, was a German-British actor, born on 22 January 1893 in Berlin. initially became famous in Germany, thanks to films such as: "Different from the others", "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" or "The Hands of Orlac". After a career in silent films, he became a best-paid star UFA.
As a child, he lived in the family home at Tieckstraße 39 in Berlin with his mother, Amalie Marie, and Philipp Heinrich Veidt, a former military man who became a government official. his father was strict unlike his mother who was caring and sensitive. He came from a Lutheran family in the Lutheran Church and was baptized on March 26, 1893. He also had an older brother, Karl, who died in 1900 of scarlet fever at the age of 9. two years after Karl's death, his father became seriously ill and required heart surgery. As Conrad's family was not wealthy and could not afford such an expense, the doctor only demanded the fee that the family could afford. Young Veidt was delighted with the surgeon's kindness and swore to follow the example of the man who saved his father's life, from that moment on he wanted to become a surgeon. Niesetu's dream of becoming a surgeon was thwarted when he graduated in 1912 without a diploma and placed 13th out of 13 students, and was also discouraged by the amount of study it took to get into medical school. However, a new career path opened up for Conrads during a Christmas performance in which he delivered a long prologue before the curtain rose. The performance was bad, but the audience thought that Veidt did really great. Conrad became interested in actors, but his father considered stage artists to be outcasts and often called them gypsies. Thanks to part-time work and pocket money from his mother, Veidt was able to afford to attend theaters in Berlin. After each performance he stood in front of the Deutsches Theater waiting for the actors or hoping that he would be mistaken for an actor. At the end of the summer of 1912, he met a theater porter who introduced him to the actor Albert Blumenreich, who agreed to give Corad acting lessons for six marks. He was given 10 lessons before auditioning for Max Reinhardt reciting Goethe's Faust. Reinhardt offered Veidt a contract as an assistant for one season from September 1913 to August 1914, with a salary of 50 marks per month. During this time he played episodic roles as spear carriers and soldiers. His mother attended almost every performance of her son. After a successful career, they decided to extend his contract for a second season, but World War I broke out and on December 28, 1914, Conrad was enlisted in the army. In 1915 he was sent to the Eastern Front as a non-commissioned officer and took part in the Battle of Warsaw. In the meantime, he contracted jaundice and pneumonia and had to be evacuated to a hospital on the Baltic Sea. While convalescing, he received a letter from his girlfriend Lycie Mannheim informing him that she had found a job at the Front Theater in Liepāja. This news prompted Veidt to apply to the theater. because his condition was not improving, the army allowed him to join the theater so he could entertain the soldiers. While working in the theater, his relationship with Lucie ended. In 1916 he was examined by the army again and found unfit for service; On January 10, 1917, he was granted full parole. Conrad returned to Berlin where he was accepted back into the Deutsches Theater. There he played a small role as a priest which earned him a favorable review - the reviewer hoped that "God would save Veidt from the cinema" but luckily this did not happen.
Tumblr media
One of his first and most important films was the role of a sleepwalker in "Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari" (1920) directed by Robert Wiene, which became a classic of German and expressionist cinema. The film also changed a lot in cinematography and was quite controversial for its time, but now it is well known to us and appreciated by every fan of cinematography. he also first starred in the film "Anders als die Andern" (1919) in which Conrad and Reinhold SchĂŒnzel played the main roles. All copies of the film were corrupted by the Nazis because the homosexuality depicted in the film was considered a disease at that time. Currently, only a small part of the film can be watched, that is, the part of the film that was saved. In 1924, he played in the film "Orlac's Hands" based on the book by Maurice Renard. It's time for Conrad's great success outside Europe. In 1928, he played the role of Gwynplaine in the film "The Man Who Laughs" based on the book by Victor Hugo (I recommend watching the film, it's really great. Conrad's role in this film influenced culture, Joker's appearance is inspired by the Veidt. Of course, it is worth mentioning roles in horror films, e.g. "Der Student Von Prag" (1926) and "Das Wachsfigurenkabinett" (1924). He also starred in the first German film with sound. "Das Land ohne Frauen" (1929). At the end of the 20s he went to Hollywood where he played a few roles, but with the advent of sound in films he had to give up acting in America and returned to Germany. During this time, he became a teacher for many aspiring artists, including Lisa Golm.Interesting fact: the role of Dracula was written specifically for Conrad, but Veidt was afraid that his English was too poor, instead the role of Dracula was played by BĂ©la Lugosi, whose English was not better.
Tumblr media
Veidt did not support the Nazi regime and sent funds to help the British during the German Blitz bombings. Shortly after the Nazi Party took power in Germany in March 1933, Joseph Goebbles purged the film industry of political opponents and Jews. In April 1933, a week after Cornad's wedding to Prager, a Jewish woman also known as "Lilli", they emigrated to Britain before any action could be taken against them. Goebbles imposed a "race questionnaire" in which every actor employed in Germany had to declare his "race" in order to continue working. When Veidt filled out the questionnaire, he answered the question about his race by writing "Jew." Veidt was not of Jewish origin, but his wife was, and Veidt would not abandon the woman he loved so much or cooperate with the regime, as many others did. Veidt was against anti-Semitism and showed it publicly and said it loudly. he supported Jews who were deprived of German citizenship in the spring of 1933. Conrad was informed that if he got a divorce and declared support for the new regime, he would still be able to operate in Germany, which he rejected because, as he claimed, nothing could cause him to divorce Lilli. After arriving in United Kingdom, Veidt improved his English and starred in the original anti-Nazi films The Wandering Jew (1933) and Jew SĂŒss (1934). On February 25, 1939, he received British citizenship. During this time, Conrad made films in both French and English.
I think these are the key and important moments in Conrad Veidt's life.
Trivia
Conrad, through his lawyers, gave children locked in shelters in London 2,000 tins of sweets, 2,000 large packets of chocolate and 1,000 gift envelopes in the form of British currency. all to improve their mood during the Christmas :)
Veidt helped his parents-in-law from Austria get to Switzerland and in 1935 he managed to obtain permission from the Nazi government for his ex-wife and their daughter to move to Switzerland. He also offered to help Felizitas' mother ( his ex-wife's mother), Frau Radke, leave Germany. but she refused, saying "no damn little Asutrian Nazi corporal will make me leave my house." Apparently she survived the war, but Corad never saw her again.
"There are two different kinds of men. There are the men men, what do you call them, the man's man, who likes men around, who prefers to talk with men, who says the female can never be impersonal, who takes the female lightly, as playthings. I do not see a man like that in my mirror. Perhaps, it is because I think the female and the male attract better than two men, that I prefer to talk with females. I do. I find it quite as stimulating and distinctly more comfortable. I have a theory about this - it all goes back to the mother complex. In every woman, the man who looks may find - his mother. The primary source of all his comfort. I think also that females have become too important just to play with. When men say the female cannot discuss impersonally, that is no longer so. When it is said that females cannot be geniuses, that is no longer so, either. The female is different from the male. Because she was born to be a mother. There is no doubt about that. But that does not mean that, in some cases, she is not also born a genius. Not all males are geniuses either. And among females today there are some very fine actresses, very fine; fine doctors, lawyers, even scientists and industrialists. I see no fault in any female when she wears slacks, smokes (unless it is on the street, one thing, the only thing, which I don't like), when she drives a car... when men say things like "I bet it is a woman driving" if something is wrong with the car ahead - no, no. These are old, worn out prejudices, they do not belong in today"
~°~
Conrad died on April 3, 1943 from heart disease.
(Sorry for any mistakes, remember I'm not from an English-speaking country, the information comes from Wikipedia and various websites that you can easily find :)

Mina Murray/Harker (Dracula)

The Apple Siblings (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)
Fun fact: they accidentally got orphaned because of a PUN. Other than the three Apple siblings; the only other pony that lives on Sweet Apple Acres is named Granny Smith. Every brony on the planet then concluded that their parents were dead. AND NO ONE QUESTIONED IT. It was eventually confirmed in 2017 in the episode "The Perfect Pear," but still; shit's wild. I'm pretty sure this wasn't intentional on Lauren Faust's/the early writers' part, but it's pretty funny in hindsight.

100YQ Rant/Criticism
SPOILERS FOR FT 100YQ INCLUDED
I have been following FT 100YQ and have seen a lot of moments that just made me go ‘hmm okay, doesn’t make sense but alright’, and there have been a lot of moments of just the plot/narrative being broken for convenience sake. It has gotten under my skin many times, but as a Jellal fan, one of the biggest offenses and one that makes me scratch my head a lot is from chapter 144.  Don't read ahead if you don't want to be spoiled about a big reveal on his character or on 100YQ.
144 : Beyond Sins.
Tumblr media
Now initially when this chapter came out, I really loved it since it was the first time we had a backstory in ages and it being Jellal’s, I ate it all up.
But there was something in this chapter that made absolutely no sense narrative wise when I looked back with fresh eyes and wasn’t riding the high of getting Jellal’s backstory/anything Jellal related.
That being.
Tumblr media
This panel.
We’re told not even a page into the chapter, Jellal’s real name is ‘Siegrain’, a name which we know from the previous narrative and was hinted throughout arcs to be like an alter persona for Jellal.
Tumblr media
This chapter goes on to basically confirm that Jellal canonically has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), a trauma response that must have manifested given all the stress and changes that happened in his life from losing his father young, watching his mother die by the slavers and then being taken into slavery, having his whole trajectory he planned for his life ruined etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an understandable trauma response, and I would love to have seen it properly explored with understanding in regards to Jellal/Sieg’s character. It would have been so interesting to see how Jellal’s trauma at the tower manifested in a split personality and how he coped with the situation as he was cited to be notably different to all those around him
‘A Leader’
‘One who doesn’t cry’
‘The strong boy’.
This chapter basically confirms that this character he created was a way to mask his own insecurities and cope in the unknown environment.
However, that’s not where my gripe is.
Because as much as I was interested in the idea of Jellal’s trauma manifesting as DID, it’s the way that the narrative has gone about it which butchers everything else and makes no sense in a narration sense.
The man who we are told his name has always been ‘Jellal’ is now revealed to us by this flashback chapter to have actually had the name ‘Siegrain’ as his birth name.
This on it’s own is boggling but wouldn’t have caused such breaks in the narrative, but the fact that this very chapter contradicts a chapter in a previous arc with Jellal in the Gears fight, this is where it just stops making sense.
Tumblr media
In order to beat Gears in chapter 57, Jellal takes out ‘Siegrain’, the man whom he claims is the carrier of his sins, which in accordance to other arcs of Fairy Tail makes sense since we see the Siegrain persona being the most active in regards to infiltrating the magic council, getting the etherion fired etc.
But now we have in not even 100 chapters after this, it’s revealed to us that Jellal’s name isn’t Jellal at all, but ‘Siegrain’. How can Siegrain be the one carrying Jellal’s sins, when Siegrain is the main identity/person  that Jellal was created from?
It just doesn’t add up.
And if that isn’t narrative breaking enough, Jellal’s name actually being ‘Siegrain’ causes a whole other narrative hole too.
Tumblr media
This guy.
Mystogan.
Mystogan’s real name is Jellal, just like if not all Edolan counterparts share the same first name of their earthland counterparts (e.g. Natsu Dragion, Lucy Ashely, Erza Knightwalker, Gray Surge etc). But being told now all of a sudden that Jellal changed his birth name doesn't work for Mystogan, as are we meant to believe that Mystogan conveniently changed his name to be ‘Jellal’ to match his earthland counterpart who was going through a mental crisis?
Mystogan, the one who’s whole thing was to keep his identity hidden and it’s Faust, the one who calls him out the name as Jellal. The one who is meant to be his father/father figure? Mystogan, who somehow has the name Jellal, a name Erza wasn’t even allowed to mention out of the Tower, which makes sense for him to have it if his counterpart had that birth name, but apparently that’s not the case?
I know I am probably just beating a dead horse now and I should get over it, but I just needed to write something since my head was struggling to make sense of the reveal for a long time. I don’t know what exactly is added to the story by Jellal’s birth name being ‘Siegrain’ other than shock value. Like what does this plot twist actually do? Nothing.
Other than it just makes the whole narrative so messy now and I don’t like it. If the aspect of DID was to be introduced for Jellal’s character, then what was wrong with Jellal being the host? And Siegrain being the alter that manifested as a trauma response?
It could have been something intriguing and insightful to explore, bring awareness about different trauma responses and also add a new layer to his character beyond just extremes of misguidance and the need for redemption.
But no.
God this just makes no sense.
I’m sorry for ranting, after seeing the Gears fight animated, it reminded me of THAT reveal and I just saw glaring plot holes which I completely blindsided the first time I read the chapter.  And what makes me even more annoyed is the DID aspect is probably just another plot convenience that is most likely never going to be brought up again ever.
And I’ve already said how I don’t like something serious such as trauma being used as a plot device.
Which it clearly is in this case.
The only way I can make sense of both events existing, is that it shows that Siegrain is so disassociated from his sense of self, that he has decided to adopt the identity of Jellal completely, killing his born self for the sake of the present and going as far to believe that Siegrain is the made one and not 'Jellal'.
However then that opens up a whole new discussion...One I might cover another day, but i'm afraid this is getting long enough as it is.
But yeah, thank you for listening to my ramblings if you’ve stayed this long.
I wonder if anyone else felt the same about the reveal as someone who likes Jellal's character? Or just has been following the story? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
