TOS Characters as Oddly Specific College Students
Kirk: Frat bro who approaches you when you're sitting alone in the corner at a party, and at first you think he's going to be a dick, but then he actually shows concern?? for your well-being??? and you later find out he's in like 15 volunteering clubs and it makes a little bit more sense.
Spock: That one kind of bitchy TA who's working on his post doc and doesn't have time for you to not understand Stoichiometry, he's got real problems.
McCoy: The equally bitchy lab assistant who's got beef with the TA for some reason, even though you've seen them willingly hanging out around campus.
Scotty: That one guy in your dorm who jerry rigs two mini fridges and a microwave together to charge his homemade laptop. At least he hasn't burnt anything down yet.
Uhura: Impeccable girl with flawless notes and A-game outfits EVERY class, which is especially confusing because you're pretty sure she's a computer science linguistics double major?? hello??? does she sleep??
Chekov: That one guy who always kind of fucks around, and one day he accidentally sets off the fire alarm and evacuates his whole dorm, and he feels really bad about it.
Sulu: That one gay guy in the second row of your lecture with outfit goals and such a wicked sense of humor that makes you actually want to come to class.

Are they a stoner? TOS edition
Kirk: This dude definitely drinks bong water. In the academy he was a D1 stoner, close to Picard levels but more of a drinker since he’s from Iowa. He probably knows how to use corn husk as rolling paper ngl…I imagine he doesn’t really indulge as a captain but when he goes on shore leave he probably lights up.
McCoy: Like most doctors he’s against smoking due to the health risks…HOWEVER, being from the south if he has a drink in his hand anything is fair game. But all in all, he’s mostly a drinker.
Spock: He never tried anything related to weed or smoking until he met Kirk. Who convinced him it would be illogical to not try hitting a bong at least once since, “first officers should always being looking to try new experiences.” He never smoked again after that…Until he became an ambassador (shit is stressful)
Uhura: She is definitely the type to host a girls night smoke session where they blast SZA and paint their nails. She rolls on pink and purple papers and mixes other herbs into blunts like lavender and rosemary for the calming effects. Definitely the best person on the ship to vibe with.
Sulu: He is the only guy allowed at the girls night because he brings great holodiscs to watch from his collection. He’s not much of a smoker, but he does like edibles so he is usually isn’t getting zooted unless he’s with Uhura.
Chekov: Bro has a bowl cut. I don’t think I need to elaborate, like OBVIOUSLY this kid does dabs for fun…He also believes weed was somehow invented in Russia? Dude is a FIEND.
Scotty: He seems like he would be the one to bet Kirk he won’t drink the bong water and then Kirk does. A party animal through and through, he can smell loud from the warp core and will transport himself into your quarters and make you share.
Nurse Chapel: She is always the sober(ish) one who makes sure everyone is drinking enough water and has snacks. She also developed a hypospray that prevents lung damage from smoking as a preventative treatment, opposed to the usual cell regeneration therapy most smokers on the Enterprise do. She makes the best special brownies for Uhura’s girls night! But only to make Uhura happy ;)

Chekov: Three words. Eight letters. Say them and I'm yours.
Sulu:
Sulu: I got food.
Chekov: Aw, you know me so well!

Love Ms Nichols she will always be my personal hero
I finished my first ever watch of Star Trek: The Original Series last night and wow, what a journey.
I’ve loved all the Trek I’ve watched before, but for years I avoided TOS. I had watched a handful of episodes and not really been into it, and I didn’t want to deal with any sexism or racism or other remnants of the 60s. I bought into the Kirk Drift and thought he was an asshole, and I didn’t want to watch 79 episodes of an asshole.
But after finishing Lower Decks my husband and I decided to dive in and watch all of it. I expected to adore Spock and groan at the special effects. I expected to roll my eyes a lot.
Friends, I was so wrong. I am delighted by this series. There was plenty of things to roll my eyes at and cringe at and yeah there’s stuff that has aged poorly or maybe was bad from the start. But overall, what a joy to watch. It was so fun to see the origin of so many things in science fiction and Star Trek. The costumes and sets were fun to look at. The fighting scenes are sometimes goofy but fun to watch. So much of this show is FUN and you can tell they had a blast making it.
And yeah, I loved Spock. But Kirk, Kirk surprised me. He’s such a deeper and more interesting character than I realized before watching. He’s not really an asshole at all. He’s smart and sweet and a good leader. He loves and ship and his crew. As Spock would say, he’s fascinating.
I knew vaguely about K/S and the history of fanfiction but watching it it’s like…yeah. Of course. Of course these two are together. Of course they launched fandom as we know it. Of course people saw the way they looked at each other and knew they should be married.
If you haven’t watched it yet take this as your sign that you should give it a try. You probably don’t have to watch every episode. There are some real stinkers in there. But give it a try, go in with an open heart, and you might be as delighted by it as I am now.

Steve Yockey, co-creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” is joining Starfleet as the new screenwriter for “Star Trek 4.”
Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s “Star Trek,” including Chris Pine (as Capt. James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt. Nyota Uhura), Karl Urban (as Dr. Leonard McCoy), John Cho (as Lt. Hikaru Sulu) and Simon Pegg (as chief engineer Montgomery Scott). (Variety first reported the news in its cover story on the future of the “Star Trek” franchise.)
Bringing the cast back following 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond” has proven trickier for the studio than finding an altruistic Ferengi. At least three previous attempts fell apart for various reasons, most recently with director Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) and screenwriters Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”) that the studio had slated to open in late 2023. When Shakman left the film in 2022 to direct “The Fantastic Four” for Marvel Studios, however, Paramount pulled it from its slate and sent it back to spacedock.

In the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror" there is a scene that we may pass over lightly as modern viewers but is important to consider in the context of the times. This episode first aired in December of 1966, 58 years ago.
With the Enterprise damaged by the Romulans' nuclear device detonation at close proximity, navigator Lt. Stiles is relieved by Captain Kirk to rush to Phaser Control and keep the weapons operational at a critical moment. The Captain orders Lt. Uhura to take over Mr. Stiles' station at navigation, which she immediately does.
At first blush, this may seem like just another action scene with the crew responding to the crisis. But why does the camera follow Uhura so closely and linger on her as she assumes the navigation station with Sulu looking on?
Consider the scene in the context of 1966. A black woman is portrayed as a professional, an officer in Starfleet, skilled at her job with the complete confidence of her Captain and her peers. She responds quickly and competently to orders without fanfare.
This is where Star Trek shines and where so many others fail. The scene is ahead of its time but is played perfectly straight, with just a lingering camera shot for emphasis. No obnoxious moralizing, no heavy-handed finger-wagging, or clumsy brute force to spoil the effort.
Star Trek showed us a better version of ourselves, one that we could aspire to, and it showed it to us in the best way; realistic people behaving realistically in a futuristic setting, without regard to superficial differences. And it was effective and groundbreaking precisely because of that.
