More Lumity inspired scenes for Mareach I’d like to draw but am not skilled enough

-Mario is beaten down during a fight with Bowser. Just as all hope seems lost.. “Hey!” Peach emerges from the shadows above, with the fire power-up, and declares, “Stay away from my Mario!”

-The enchanting grom fright dance. Need I go on?

-Mario and Peach having a moment that leads to the princess saying “you always have a way of sneaking into people’s hearts” before she kisses his cheek. They both freeze when they realize what she’s done. They happily reunite with a hug, that leads to Peach initiating a passionate kiss. “Crickey!” Says the plumber as they pull away. "Spoilers for a series none of you will read" Jokes on you, I got an English translation of the first book from my local library, specifically because you kept mentioning it! Admittedly, I haven't read it yet, but I'll give it a go soon.

For funsies, here’s a picture of my collection of the three books:

You know, one of these days, I’m gonna sit down and write a bunch of rambling posts about all the little things in this series I’m oddly obsessed with. Like the underdeveloped worldbuilding and magic system. Or how all the fire witches get the short end of the stick in their own unique ways. Or how earth and metal witches are totally overpowered and need to get nerfed.

I think the best way I can sum up my experience and relationship with these books is with this anecdote. I reread the books a while back, about half a year, or maybe a year ago. I got maybe a fifth through the first book, so not very far at all. I don’t think it was any one scene in particular, but more so a combination of things that made me close the book and sorta hold it at arms length. And I said to myself ”Wow, no wonder I was depressed in high school if this is what I was reading.” I briefly considered sopping, before I inevitably took the book up again, and I the proceeded to devour the entire trilogy over like a weekend.

The books are heavy, occasionally dreary and depressive. But I still find them compelling nonetheless and the fact that I’m still thinking about them as much as I do so many years later, with the fandom dead and dried up… that has to mean something.

And it’s not all bad and sad. Lumity may have been revolutionary, but they were not the first gay witches I shipped. That’d be Vanessa and Linnéa. And can I just say? Vanessa is low-key my favorite Chosen One. She had some of my favorite lines in the books.

(i have to stop myself now, i could go on for a lot longer. but like i said, one day i’ll sit down and make those long rambling posts)

So yeah. I hope you enjoy the book, or at the least that you find it worthwhile.

Did you also cringe during that Lumity love tunnel scene? It seems to be a mutual feeling to those who like the ship as well. Was it supppse to be awkwardly cute? Or angsty?

So... The cringe is the point... I just don't think it was done well, especially for The Owl House. If the same scene were in Amphibia though, it'd have worked a lot better and I'll get into why soon.

I first just kind of want to mention that I think ALL of the big S2 Lumity moments have problems and they just kind of get progressively worse as the season goes on but their problems aren't universal and they range in how bad they are. Not even to say they're all bad but none of them are all good like the Grom team up.

What's wrong with this one though? Well... The first problem is it's a tonal break even from an episode that is being looser than TOH normally allows. TOH doesn't go to the nines though. It stays fairly grounded (for better and for worse, and probably more worse) with its tone, reactions, etc. like that. S2 doubled down on this feeling but it's there in S1 as well.

The Lumity sequence is frankly, somehow, the most over the top of the three while Eda's, despite being a dream sequence (since really it's just an elevated flashback mostly), is the most grounded. Eda is actually running at a 2, King is maybe a four and Lumity is at an 8 to try to scale it. There are jokes with King but his emotions being taken seriously and what he's doing is honestly kind of low key because they won't show us the weirder stuff. Eda is being deathly serious going back through her memories and there are almost no jokes until Harpy Eda shows up and what is Lumity doing? A fucking tunnel of love where Luz LOSES HER MIND. Like... This is literally the first time in the entire series Luz has had anything even remotely close to this sort of reaction to something that might embarrass her. To anything really. Yes, she's more excitable than other members of the cast but she doesn't usually go batshit. It's like if Polly's reaction to someone dissing her and her family was to suddenly dive into a five page soliloquies. It doesn't match what we're used to and it's too sudden to connect properly with the emotion.

It also just isn't funny. Like there's a little bit of humor but for how over the top it is, the reaction is HORROR. It is playing this breakdown deadly seriously... But all Amity really does is not scold Luz for ruining for a good time or anything like that but just comment about them dating, confirming her feelings (in an honestly awkward line because the tunnel of love never asks for a date, it's just saying Amity is cool), and then... she just kind of moves on. She doesn't ask what the hell happened, what happened with Luz, etc. like that. She just... doesn't properly react besides in abject horror.

That's not funny or endearing or sweet. It's... sad. And it just tries to move on from that like it almost didn't happen. Amity is fully ready for Luz's confession when it comes. She's not nervous or scared like Luz is despite the fact that all the confidence should be in Luz's court while Amity is terrified of whatever news Luz has for her.

...And this is WITHOUT the framing of Amity having been kidnapped against her will, shoved into an amusement ride where Luz's feelings are forced out of her before Luz is blackmailed by Hooty essentially TO CONFESS. Yes, Eda tries to be nice but there home is going to be destroyed if she does ask Amity out.

What the fuck are you telling kids with that? That it's okay to blackmail a friend to get them to confess? That it's okay to tell the person they like their feelings? Like yes, the audience knows that Amity likes Luz but Hooty has no reason to. Luz has arguably only recently started showing deeper feelings than friendship towards Amity. This is a LEAP on his part that is just kind of cruel.

And yes, that's part of the point of the episode but the other two are basic, well meaning actions just taken too far. Someone needs sleep, help them get some sleep with the too far being drugs. King... Frankly isn't bad. Just period really. I wish it wasn't audio hell for me honestly.

But romance is more complicated than that. Confessions like this are more complicated. Worse yet, when the confession happens, they play it straight. Like the rest of the episode didn't happen. It's just an awkward confession between two teenagers that also comes off as "Marry me please" on Luz's part because of the phrasing. That's not actually a criticism. The show built up the line to have multiple levels of meaning and also an overenthusiastic teenager going a LITTLE far on the confession is very real.

That's the rub with Knock Knock Knockin'. The confession is good and gives a real emotional punch to conclude the action element of the episode. And, because it is an adventure series, some threat usually does need to be present for the episode and Hooty's tantrum is that, even if it ends up being played mostly for emotional blackmail because the other two are obviously fine.

I don't even really know what to say for fixing this episode that wouldn't be against its genre. It's kind of an issue for Lumity in general that the romance elements don't pair well, at least not with TOH's writer's concept of doing romance, with the adventure elements. Then there's the episode framing (which jesus christ is a problem for Clouds on the Horizon as well) where... This is only a third of a Lumity episode. But it's the episode they get together. It is what in most shows would be the climax of this arc and the show doesn't really explore their relationship afterwards so why not dedicate at least half an episode properly to the confession. Or have them exchange more... Ten? words to each other each before the confession? Because the focus is ENTIRELY on Luz losing it rather than the two's relationship and their feelings towards each other.

That's maybe the final problem: It's cringe that doesn't setup the payoff of the episode. Nothing does. Admittedly, Lumity, the longer it goes on, just struggle to talk to each other but it especially hurts here where Amity is dumped off, they are immediately dumped into the bellows of the house, immediately go onto the tunnel of love after Luz helps Amity up and then the confession happens outside.

There's just not much that works cohesively for this to be the major payoff of Amity's character and Luz's efforts, theoretically, to get with Amity. It instead feels just awkward, sad and then suddenly we're supposed to celebrate? Sorry. I'm still waiting for Luz to properly apologize to Amity and make sure she's okay. But... That didn't happen. Despite this being the girl Luz wants to have in her future. Edit: Luz does apologize for the Tunnel of Love (not her actions though) in an attempt to not look like a nerd and blame Hooty for the tunnel, not what actually made Amity upset since Amity show any signs of being upset until Luz goes off the rails. But... She's trying to apologize for looking nerdy and over the top to the only other member of the Azura Book Club. Who, you know, she once challenged to a witch's duel after stating where the reference came from. Can you see why I started to no longer believe that future was one where at least Amity wasn't going to be happy in?

Rebrand

Hey everyone,

So it has been a hella of a fun run but I’m now going to begin rebranding my blog for focusing on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The rebrand is a going to be a lil different than previously though.

This time round I don’t yet have a theory I am overly invested in and there is a few potentials of where my mind might go. I do low key ship Lunella and Casey, but that being said I’m not massively invested in them getting together. While their first interaction in “Moon Girl Landing” made me think there is something there, a lot of their awkwardness can be easily explained away by the fact they are both socially awkward, albeit in slightly different ways. Additionally, I love Lunella and Casey’s friendship and while I have no objection to them getting together I feel that is something worth preserving without introducing shipping into the mix.

Casey I do get the impression maybe LGBT+, however I will say this is all mostly admittedly weak evidence. There is the social awkwardness in the first episode, one of her dads later telling her that Moon Girl is a keeper “Today, I Am a Woman”. I will say in “Today, I Am a Woman” though what really strikes me about this episode and Casey is the huge focus on “chosen family”.

LGBT+ people don’t always have the luxury of having families who accept us and love us unconditionally and in this episode we are first introduced to the concept of chosen family in the context of the marriage of Casey’s dads. They talk about how their wedding was small but they were surrounded by their “chosen family”. Later when giving her bat mitzvah speech, Casey brings up the concept of “chosen family”, expressing that part of her “chosen family”, Lunella is absent. Growing up with two dads the idea is probably not an unfamiliar concept to Casey, but it is interesting that it is something she expressly mentioned and in reference to her best friend. Probably one of the stronger pieces of evidence for Casey being LGBT+.

Then her business card is one stripe short of being a Pride Flag, she has a Pride sleeping bag and she intentionally eats stuff that will make her vomit a rainbow before going on fair ground rides.

I mean Casey could very easily be an ally but it is still interesting.

You then have Brooklyn who is presumably a trans woman and her friend, Tai who is non-binary. Casey’s dads obviously.

And you have the blink and you miss it rep and there is a lot actually. Like a rainbow on a store window and in one scene when Moon Girl is chasing a bad guy she passes this guy on his laptop. The laptop is on camera for a second but there is a very clear trans pride flag on it. That guy appears a few times as a generic background character. Just two I can name off the top of my head but I swear there has been more.

Normally, I get annoyed at the blink and you miss it representation but in this case, when you have at least 4 expressly LGBT+ characters (I’m not counting the computer whose name escapes me) I’m not complaining.

1 season in and when it comes to LGBT+ representation, I’d say for a show made by Disney TV Animation, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is already up there. And hell, it doesn’t yet quite hit the high bar set by The Owl House, but we’re only on Season 1 and we are off to a promising start.

My point is I don’t have a theory I am 100% focusing on right now though, so for now the rebrand is going to be;

luz noceda for the ask game

Anon you caught me right before I was Abt to go to sleep but I can't not do this. It's for my girl (feel free to send me more while I sleep btw these r fun)

favorite thing about them: LITERALLY WHERE DO I EVEN START. She's one of my top ten protagonists of all times. I love the lessons she learns, the way she learns them, I love watching her grow and struggle and thrive. I love her so so so much. To keep things simple(ish) I will say that my favorite thing about Luz (which I've mentioned once or twonce before) is that she's an objectively cringey, very ND coded kid who's still given the utmost love and respect from the narrative. She gets to be objectively fucking uncool and this story still loves her. And it's nice it makes me feel loved by proxy

least favorite thing about them: I mean, I'd say in season 1 it's the tendency to flatten the boiling isles and it's people into 2 dimensional tropes for easily comprehension, but that's also one of my favorite flaws of Luz and the narrative always makes an interesting point out of this attitude. Maybe it's the suicidal ideation bc it really scared me the first time I watched thanks to them. I knew nothing bad was gonna happen (within reason), this is Disney, but I was like DAMN THEY'RE GOING THERE!!!

favorite line: okay I actually cannot in good conscious choose one bc my friend once informed me that me and Luz just. Talk the same. Same silly idioms and phrases same whimsical expressions and syntax same humour, etc etc. It's a chicken egg situation and do not know who started it but I know that it's frighteningly accurate. So I'll just go for the safe classic "the only thing I've ever really wanted was to be understood" bc. Y'know. Best moment in the whole show and everything

nOTP: Luz and Hunter. It's just really not for me, even if I can see why it appeals to others. I'm too attached to the familial reading of their dynamic and the doors that opens up analysis wise. Also my irl brother is a hunter kinnie and I just outlined my credentials for being a Luz kinnie so /j

random headcanon: she played guitar when she was younger! The one in the basement belonged to Manny and he'd sit her on his lap and show her simple chords and riffs. She got a ukulele so she could practice. Then when Manny died she fell off playing it bc it felt wrong doing it without him, even though she still played uke sometimes. She picks it back up though during the season 3 timeskip and post canon! Also she was born in New York and lived there til she was 2/3, at which point she moved around a few states until landing in Connecticut at the age we see in the thanks to them video diaries (I wanna say 7 or 8?)

unpopular opinion: I also think Luz gets characterized as more bitter/vengeful/surly than she really is, especially in fics set around season 3. She wants to be happy, to have fun with her friends, she just feels like doesn't deserve it. Also I low-key think Luz is like. A genius. Just in an unconventional way. She rediscovered a lost form of magic and then taught herself it all on her own. She probably struggles with long division but I mean it when I say she is literally a genius imo

H-hotel: A new kind of magic (Wendip/Lumity/Hiccstrid)

The spacious, stone corridor was filled with gentle laughter as two women stepped from the elevator and ran towards the door of their room. The laughter ended, however, when Amity's lips metLuz's, as the latter pressed her girlfriend against said door, letting her arms lock around her back, slowly undoing her clothes.

Visiting a love hotel has been on their dirty minds for some time, and hearing about mysterious gate opening on the Boiling Isles only deepened the appetite for this fantasy. Keys rattled in Luz's pocket as she searched for them, Amity toying with her, preventing her reaching them,as if wanting to prolong their foreplay and for someone to spot them makingout in the public.

Anbd her wish was suddenly fulfilled.

"Oh, look like you guys are our company!"

Amity yelped when she heard a female voice address them,and frantically tried to cover her blouse that has been pulled up. Luz, on the other hand, took defensive position, ready to shield Amity, though she was surprised to see the red-haired woman wasn't alone.

She held hands with a chestnut-haired younger man, while another, odd-looking couple accompanied them, their costumes making them look like they escaped a renaissance fair.

"Hey, back off, this is our room!"

"Yeah, I was weirded out the first time too", the blonde woman with braided hair spoke,before she reached out into her pocket.

At the same time, Luz brought hers out, and examined the other two, unable to spot any obvious differences.

"But-but this have to be a mistake…"

"Nope, eh, not how this place works…", the taller man, clad in leather suit chuckled, his cheeks burning with shades of crimson. "And it takes a moment to get used to it…"

Intrigued, Luz inserted the key into the hole, and, feeling the tiniest spark of magic flowing through her fingers, let the door open, only to reveal…

"Three beds?", Amity blinked, "W-wait… Is-is this a hotel for…"

"Swingers? Yeah, kinda.", the girl in flannel shirt finished,as they entered the room.

"But it doesn't have to be", her partner quickly added. "Hi, my my name is Dipper, this is my girlfriend, Wendy".

"'Sup"

"And this fair lady is Astrid Hofferson, and I am Hiccup. Hiccup Haddock the third,of the Berkian Haddocks.", he added, as if to clear the confusion.

Luz and Amity exchanged confused looks before reaching their hands to shake with their unexpected new friends.

"Luz, Luz Noceda."

"Ah, yes.", Dipper corrected glasses on his nose, "This place kinda… pairs, uh, pa irs with each other that have something in common. We're not quite sure how it works."

"Witchcraft, probably", Astrid replied, gaining Luz's and Amity's attention. "We don't really dabble in that in our village… and what do you do?"

"Are you going to use that axe if we say that we are witches?", Luz asked, once again stepping foot forward. Amity, however,was ahead of her, bringing some of the abomination goo from her purse, manipulating in the air, much to the other four's amazement.

"Woah, more magic!", Wendy exclaimed, "And I thought that the butterfly princess was the weirdest".

"I'd pick the invisible elf girl", Hiccup added sheepishly.

"You liked not being able to see her and knowing what she will do to you, right…?", Astrid asked in low, smoky voice that made her boyfriend chuckle.

At the same time, Amity felt more and more baffled, watching the four others casually mention their previous sexcapades with levity and nonchalance.

"Hey, sweet potato.", Luz brought her from the trance, " You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm just slightly… confused"

"We can take it easy",Wendy quickly stepped in, unbuttoning her shirt, "There is a reason the beds are separated… for now, at least".

"Or we could dive straight in and let you show us what magic you can do", Astrid countered, unbuckling what now, Luz realised, was leather armor. "And something tells me you've came prepared."

Amity looked, first at Luz, then at her new friends, and made her decision…

Day 18: Luz Noceda

Not my last essay posts, I saved 2 special characters for last.

Gonna get this out of the way first. My favourite Luz ship? Not Lumity, Lunter, Willuz. It's Luney (Luz x Viney) platonically. We cool? Cool.

How far can I talk about the biggest protagonist and main character of the show? I don't know, but it's already in the draft, so going with the flow, just like Luz, it is.

I think one of the aspects of Luz that is very heavily overlooked, is that she is really good at communicating, but sometimes really bad at communicating at the same time. Let me explain.

No matter how difference the themes of different cartoons and shows are, The Owl House, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Milo Murphy's Law (I haven't watched Amphibia), no matter how you think of it, fighting is not the main theme. Say all you want, you can't change my mind on it. Fighting doesn't result in you gaining more allies, it only get rid of them. Communication. Is. The. Key. If you can get someone who's on the other side or indecisive to your side without violence, it's incredibly impressive.

Adventures are where allies understand each other better, the one main fight doesn't matter if the allies still can't align. I didn't pull this out of nowhere, remember when Stan and Ford almost got everyone harmed because they can't agree on a grammar mistake, or Steven got his dad kidnapped because Garnet doesn't want to tell. Communication doesn't mean "just talk it out". Communication means an unconditional negotiation that you gain the ally without the risk of them being your enemy again, get rid of the ill-gotten purpose of them being your enemy. How bad was Luz's miscommunication? Well...that may be a really long list, from running away from her mom, almost got her and Amity sowed in a book, and so on and so on.

Luz despite all that bad communication, she still managed to fix everything and get along well with everyone, by...communication. I know, too many times, sorry not sorry. Bad communications lead to division, good communications result in better understanding and sensibility. Communication is the key of change. Luz did not get a cute purple hair girlfriend out of nowhere, so much communication happened. The times Luz and Amity on the brink of collapse because Luz refused to opening up to Amity, but then when she opened up they just got even closer (I like Lumity, just not my all time favourite). Luz changed Amity so drastically we sometimes forgot how much of a brat Amity was in Season 1.

I'm just going through all the recipients of Luz's sensibility. Starting with Camila. Camila and Luz had a massive rift in the beginning, and Luz being really anxious towards her mom? No problem, Luz just need to run away to realize Camila really loved her and wanted things to get better for them. Seriously that scene when Camila holding Luz before she got pulled away made me cry a bit. Even got a cool new snakeshifter by opening up to Camila. Both Camila and Luz were direct victims of an ableist society. Camila hided away her past, Luz tried escapism. But only when they decided to opening up to the other is when they finally found each other. The neurodivergent representation in the show is quite impressive, and I'm giving it where it deserves.

You might think you can't just magically get a right hand man of an imperial overlord on your side by just communicating, but Luz did. Luz recognized the low point of Hunter, and decided to get them to their side. Luz helped Hunter realizing what Belos really is, slowly but surely it made Hunter doubting what he's doing, and finally get him to his side, even called him a brother to her. From trucing against a common enemy, to actually worked together. The hardest part which is shifting Hunter away from Belos' side, she had done, and Hexside was there to finally get Hunter to her side.

Even her allies from the beginning got a lot better with her. Collector said "she's cold-hearted but actually cares a lot". Who made her care a lot? Luz. Luz helped her find her purpose. Luz is her purpose. Every time Luz disagreed with Eda, she got herself into trouble. But every time like that, Eda understood Luz more and more. Luz's desire to live in the Isles and go on adventure had beaten minor disagreements with her new mom. Or Willow, who got so much more confident ever since Luz been around. Gus started getting the respect he deserves by hanging with Luz.

And finally let's get to the one that Luz's enemy that she can't get through, Belos. I'm going to repeat this once again, redemption and changes must come from both side. No matter how much convincing and talking, it wouldn't work if the other side aren't desire to change. Belos didn't see where he did wrong, nor was he wanting to change either. No more comparing The Owl House with Steven Universe or any other cartoons or I'll block you on sight. I do find it funny that the end of each season was Luz tricking Belos into disadvantage. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me thrice, just skill issue at that point.

Luz Noceda is a great protagonist. Hero of the Isles. One with a hella cool Titan form, 2 moms, 1 girlfriend, and finally found herself where she belongs and being understood. I'll miss her a lot, 15 minutes of her Titan form is precious.

Amity gets this fear from growing up with her parents

Ed and Em are always teasing them and amity hates it

luz kinda likes it though

when they first got it the human realm, the first few months Luz was kind of in a slump

amity got her out of the house by taking luz up on her promise to go on a date

luz takes amity on the most slice-of-life date ever, going out for milkshakes (ok I know this is canon but whatever)

I like to think that sometime in the summer, they went to a convention

because their NERDS /affectionate

They get all kinds of azura fan merch and just have a fun day together

season 1 amity was low key obsessed with luz

not in a bad way but amity had like the biggest crush ever bc she’s a teenager

Amity fell first but Luz fell harder

they love going to the library together

luz will rant about at book

and amity will just stare at her, so in love

they were both a little scared to say “I love you”

so they said it together <3
