Finished fruits basket and genuinely, probably one of my favorite shoujos of all time. I enjoyed every minute of it, the emotional moments hit with me every time. This will be a bit long so under the cut let me ramble about my love for it.

Only a series as well written as that could make me cry during a scene of a character like Akito reaching out to Tohru without malice.

I think something that makes the ending work so well, is the knowledge that ultimately we don't really find out if everyone ends up forgiving Akito. I'm sure in the sequel series they reveal it, but we're left with the knowledge that some of that hurt is too great. That Akito herself is aware of this and willing to accept whatever comes with it.

I really did enjoy the characters and couples we got, it's a series that mixes realism with fantasy well enough that even for the ones I'd normally dislike I was willing to give into the romance.

Kyo and Tohru for very obvious reasons will always have a special place in my heart. Seeing Kyo go from a brooding teenager to one who openly expresses his love for Tohru with genuine smiles and tears was amazing.

I haven't actually gone out looking for it, but I also know Kureno is a divisive figure in the fandom because to some people I think they viewed the series as almost completely absolving him of any blame. I think a major part of his story involved the fact that he was self sacrificial to a fault and it was a bad thing. He made mistakes like everyone else and it led to pain. His guilt and pity kept him locked in place and I feel like one of the major messages is that love out of Pity can be so incredibly damaging. I viewed his character as someone who got suspended in that time of when he was a teenager just barely free of his curse, incapable of moving forward for fear of hurting someone. Unaware that staying was hurting more than leaving ever would.

Ultimately I have no doubt this is going to be a series I revisit regularly to watch. Tears and all it was a wonderful experience and I adored every second.

hi!! i know u talk a lot about aromanticism a lot on here, but i don’t think i’ve ever seen u talk about aromantic anthy. would u mind discussing/elaborating on it or linking to a post where u do because i’m very curious!!

i got a similar ask half a year ago or something ridiculous like that on my main blog, but i’d like to really do justice to my url right now and explain it in more concrete terms.

i will say, it’s important to bear in mind that this reading of anthy’s character is very much informed by my own experiences, and a lot of those experiences are ones im not keen to talk in depth about. but you know. let’s make some nebulous gestures towards ideas of being traumatised, being autistic, struggling to meaningfully connect with others and honestly not really wanting to do such because of how they treat you.

like ive previously said, an aromantic perspective on the world would, i think, really benefit anthy. when youve lived your whole life experiencing violence at the hands of these patriarchal structures, of which romance is absolutely one, it’s kinda like. damn. im uncomfortable buying into those ideas.

anthy also has this lovely line in ep 19 where she says to utena ‘romance either happens or it doesn’t’ and it’s just sooooooo. so very interesting to me, actually, that anthy would say something so black and white about ‘romance’, a topic that anthy knows better than a lot of rgu characters is hopelessly confused and arbitrary and often enabling violence. and utena (fellow aromantic gaybo) says 'yeah, i know, but...'. these simplifications, these elisions. what is and isn't articulated. but what? maybe things are much more complicated than we'd like to think.

anyway enough of that tangent. one thing i as a trans and aromantic person always return to when discussing trans and aromantic readings of characters/texts more broadly is that there's no singular piece of evidence that can really cement these readings as Undeniable. it's like. okay. there's a critique of romance as a patriarchal structure in revolutionary girl utena. there's an ambiguity about anthy's feelings towards characters like utena, where there is clearly a queer connection but it takes shape in unconventional and complex ways. me, i'm aromantic, i see all of these pieces and i go oh well that's because she's an aromantic lesbian. you know, there's plenty of little moments i can evidence but those moments can be used to argue for an alloromantic lesbian anthy too. romance is a very arbitrary thing and i think everyone should take their own approach to it unapologetically. of course, mine is that it's hellish and i want nothing to do with it, but im just one guy. and im okay with that. i feel strongly about this reading and it is personal, and id be dishonest to say otherwise, but i do also find that it's well-evidenced in the text. as one of my lecturers once said, don't worry about authorial intent, it isn't real <3

quite literally one of my favorite things about louis in the books is that he projects all the anger he feels at god directly onto lestat.

like god is great and all powerful and all knowing, but god is also an indiscriminate killer; a killer who would have paul take his own life, even though he was devout and moral and good, while keeping louis on this earth (even if he's none of those things. even if he's the one who gave paul the proverbial push over the edge of that balcony). everything in the world is part of god's plan, but god is withholding, god won't share that plan with his children, even if they beg, even if they pray, and so louis is left alone, abandoned by god. and he can't hate god, because god is above reproach, but he has all this anger and this grief, and he has nowhere to put it.

and then he meets lestat. lestat who promises to transform him, to make him something new. god promises to care for your immortal soul, but lestat offers louis an immortal body. god can turn water into wine, but lestat can turn human into vampire. god forces louis to argue with his brother - an argument that kills him, and lestat forces louis to kill a man before he'll turn him into a vampire. humanity is made in god's image, but louis abandons humanity, and lestat remakes him in his own.

louis gives up god for the promise of rebirth, for the promise of new life filled with new meaning. but, of course, there's no such thing as leaving your old life behind, and ghosts don't stop haunting you just because you've died. and so louis gave up a god who was out of reach, who knew everything but would tell him nothing, and what he received in return was a god who he could finally speak with, but who had no answers to give him. and he can't accept it. so all the anger louis has at god is now anger he has at lestat, but at least now god is a man he can touch, who he can yell at, who he can resent without apology. lestat is a killer, lestat will see the brightest in humanity, the people most worthy of life, and snuff them out. lestat promises knowledge and answers, but cruelly withholds them. lestat is his creator, but he's a bad one, an uncaring one, a maker who refuses to take responsibility for what he's put on this earth.

and this resentment grows and grows and grows, until there's only one way louis can possibly handle this continuous failing of god. claudia knows it, and louis agrees. and so they kill god.

and nothing changes! nothing changes, nothing improves, and life is still just as miserable and achingly deprived of meaning, and it's not until louis finally talks about his fear out loud (that there is no god, that life only has as much meaning as we decide to give it, that even if god isn't real, good and evil are, and louis has made himself evil all on his own) that he fully accepts that he was punishing lestat for the crime of not measuring up to god - the exact crime louis punishes himself for. and so now louis is alive in a world bereft of both god and lestat. and he just has to cope with that.
