Season 1, Episode 5: The Lord of Chaos Pt. III

Favorite quote: As I was taking notes on this one, there were so many...

Will:"I hope that Anthony had some elaborate backstory for this snake... And Matt's just like, 'See ya!'" Anthony: " Little of column A, Little of Column B"

Anthony: "Quickly just giving Boreanaz more health..." Matt: "And he's got a snake friend!"

Will: "I crit a kid!"

Favorite moment: So many. This is such a funny, crucial episode to the rest of the story. Everything about Chekhov's Snake. Ron's moment with the frogs is great. Freddie coming up with the mechanics for the Nunchucks and then immediately nutting himself. The moment Daryll chucks the beans. The drama and ridiculousness of this pyramid that suddenly appears and creates chaos that is both funny, but also has real stakes.

General thoughts:

I had forgotten about the intro to this one. But it's a really fun TV parody opening. As I mentioned above, a lot of things get set up in this episode that matter later, which I think is great. It makes the world ultimately feel fleshed out. Like the actions of the dad's affect more than just them. And it is interesting that the Lark and Sparrow getting hurt moments don't have more weight. If it had happened later in the show, I think there would have been more drama. But they keep it mostly light. I think it does a bit of a disservice to Henry, who has to watch his kids get stabbed and buried by a pyramid, but I get it. They were only 5 episodes into this thing. And it is a comedy podcast after all...

The bag of beans is also a wonderful reminder that this story has an element of chance. This is not a bunch of writers sitting down and deciding the fates of some characters. There is an element of that, yes. But the dice help tell the story. And that's how you get this beautiful, crazy moment. Some of the best moments in this show happen because of the dice, and that's what's so fun about D&D.

Ultimately, this is a great episode. And now off to find Nick...

I'm jumping off a bridge. Their backstory is so tragic, I can't.

The fact that even Queenie being in the state she was, Kinger still found humanity in her, the fact that he risked his life knowing she could go crazy and attack him just so he could touch her one last time.

And the fact that Queenie allowed him to do it, the fact that she was able to keep control as a abstracted just so she could feel him. Because she loved him and he loved her back and both of them knew her fate, but in that moment, it was just them, their last moment together so both made it work.

This is such a powerful image I want to hug both of them.

Yeah okay so every vampire in the vampire chronicles is turned at critical a moment in their lives and beyond just the body they are in when they are turned, their mentality stays at that standstill for their entire immortality, Lestat was turned against his will, he was clinging onto Magnus begging him to be freed, so he’s constantly seeking freedom and only finding loneliness and thus turning back to people again and again, however he can’t STAND being told what to do, since he desires agency in his life so desperately, Armand was turned after years and years of abuse and lack of control but such a desire for genuine love, by a man he ‘loved’ so wholly who he felt was barring his love from him, he needs control in his life, he needs a ‘master’ but he does not desire it, it does not fulfill him, he is trapped in a room but the door is unlocked! Louis was mourning his brother, he felt like an utter failure and so he’s always seeking family, seeking people he can care for, he can coddle, he can prove he is good too, but he loves people who either cannot stand coddeling and need a sense of looseness to live (Lestat) or people who grow out of coddling who prove to Louis he will always fail the people he loves (Claudia), Claudias turning, in many MANY ways mirrors lestats in that it was against her will, she was stolen from her home, and in her immortality she desires freedom but unlike Lestat does not have the agency/ form to get it, she will always be small, she will always be looked down on, even by Lestat who cannot deny how much she is just like him *taps mic* ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME!! NONE OF THEM CAN BREAK THE CYCLE!!! TO BREAK IT WOULD BE TO UNDO THE VERY FIBER OF THEIR IMMORTAL SELVES!! THE CYCLE IS THE BLOOD THEY DRINK IT IS THE HEART IN THEIR CHEST AND IT ROLLS AND ROLLS DOWN THE MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS OF THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER AND IT CAN NEVER BE STOPPED BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER STOP LOVING EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!

can we talk about percy uncovering luke’s true intentions and luke coming clean about wanting to recruit percy as a powerful ally and percy obviously refusing despite sympathizing with the cause because he’s just better than that leading to them dueling, with luke about to strike percy down when annabeth’s blade, the one luke gifted her, the same cursed blade that’ll reap his soul 3 years from now, sealed with the promise of family and new beginnings, knocking into backbiter in luke’s hands, and luke turning to stare at her with the most heartbroken, torn expression on his face and annabeth staring him down with more venom than any pit scorpion could’ve had.

can we talk about annabeth standing in the clearing watching the only man she loves, someone who made a promise to protect her and always have her back, someone she’s known for 5 years, looming over a boy she met mere weeks ago, someone who, despite a godly rivalry getting in the way of their initial friendship, fought for her and saved her and chose her over himself time and time again…can we talk about how the defiance in her gaze made it very clear to luke that the person he’s closest to would choose percy over him every time

Y’know, I feel like we don’t give the writers enough credit when it comes to Soren

So often when a character is the “comic relief”, they start off with dynamic personalities and then lose them as the season go on (looking at you Cat Valentine and Steve Palchuk), but not Soren

No, Soren somehow manages to jump between being comic relief and genuinely serious and caring seamlessly. And it’s all the same character, too! He doesn’t feel like he’s switching personalities they’re just other facets of who he is and it’s amazing!!!
