DISENCHANTMENT PART FIVE SEMI-SCRIPT DOCTOR (ig)

Ok so, I would like to begin with the character deaths. I’ve got a lot of points but I’d like to start with death. (Also I might forget some stuff don’t kill me (also also forgive me for my lack of gifs n pics :( ))

Luci dies for seemingly no reason other than to make him an angel and bring mora back, two exceedingly stupid reasons in my opinion. We have already been served the point that Luci is a really good person- for example, WHEN THEY SENT HIM TO HEAVEN THE FIRST TIME. The only thing he does in heaven is be there when jerry kills god, which does practically nothing besides -now getting into my second point- bring mora back. Now, I know that sounds mean but if you think for more than a second you may realize we already have a pretty available means to bring mora back, THE ETERNITY PENDANT! It’s pretty apparent that this last part was rushed and since we already know where the pendant is we could use that pretty useless b-plot time for things much more important AND we KEEP LUCI ALIVE! Then we could also make bean choosing to bring mora back with the pendant a direct parallel to the whole Elfo death debacle! A GIANT BEAUTIFUL FUCK YOU IN DAGMAR’S FACE! Now, in terms of Elfo you may already know I do not enjoy the Elfo-Miri relationship, but I swear I have good, non-gay propaganda reason.

So, as you may remember, Elfo is already the heir to a throne. The ogre throne. And as we see at the end, Miri would’ve ended up queen no matter what. (And I do think giving the kingdom back to the elves and having Miri be one and rule was a good idea btw) so why the hell did we get a very rushed and ,supposedly, very important relationship with one of our MAIN CHARACTERS. Them being together does fuckin NOTHING and once again WASTES MORE TIME WE DONT HAVE! We could’ve made even more time for more important plot lines and Elfo still ends up a royal. SHABAM another problem solved!

Okay, now I wanna talk about characterization. Starting with Luci.

Luci is, through provided evidence, a really genuinely sweet thing. So why thE FUCK is he so into being satan’s son and extensively, torture, this season? At the very least they could’ve given him SOME hangups! He has grown so much since the first season and yet they continue to ignore that. It’s very frustrating :(.

Alright, elfo’s turn. I don’t have much to complain about regarding him this part but, blegh. I think my biggest hangup about him is how he reacts to luci’s death, the whole thing just feels eerily wrong. Though I suppose with my rewrite we don’t have to worry about anyone’s reactions to luci’s death so,,

WEPA! Bean time! I DO NOT LIKE THAT SHE LEFT WITH NO GOODBYE! I HATE IT ACTUALLY! bean is so incredibly attached to her boys and they have changed her life for the better, literally reigniting her WILL TO LIVE! She would never in a million years abandon either of them. I do support her decision to leave dreamland and I do find that in character but everything else just feels wroongg,, also why push the whole ‘choose love’ thing if she ends up abandoning her best friends?

This one’s short but zøg one billion percent should’ve had a proper goodbye with bean and I don’t understand why he didn’t.

Also get rid of all the ‘I’m gonna destroy the magic’ stuff. Still have bean be pretty irked towards magic but also have her be all “ magic ruined my life but I kinda need it for the whole killing my mom thing”.

Probably also retcon alva’s whole plan cuz It doesn’t really make sense. AND NOW WE’VE GOT EVEN MORE TIME!

I know I definitely missed some stuff but this stuff irks me the most 100% hope you guys like this strange not very well put together rewrite :) 👍

There’s not enough people talking about how important Stephanie is to Damian’s growth pre-Flashpoint.

Bruce had seen Damian as a beast to be tamed, Tim sees him as a ticking time bomb, and Dick is far better with him but he’s still an authority figure for Damian to combat with. But then he meets Stephanie, a college-aged girl who nobody trusts and he bullies her relentlessly and becomes inseparable from her.

She doesn’t interact with him based on his past, but on what she can see. This 10 year old just threatened to kill her? Wow he doesn’t get outside much. He’s not old enough to have seen Gremlins. What do you MEAN you’ve never been inside a bouncy house before we are fixing that immediately.

They are like cousins to each other. They poke fun at each other for being lame and stupid and Dick has to tell them both to shut up. She doesn’t see him as a project to be molded and redeemed, he’s just a kid with a crappy childhood like her and if he’s nice to her for 5 seconds she’ll do something with him to let him feel like a kid. And he doesn’t look at her and see a liability or a failure or a lost cause, like everyone she’s ever interacted with does. When he’s awful to her, it’s because he’s an obnoxious preteen boy.

And then you get the “there’s room in our line of work for hope, too” scene. Because Damian has gotten to know Steph and he can’t fathom why she’s here. She obviously has had to deal with crap and is still working through being kept on a leash by Nightwing and Oracle, but she isn’t broken like the rest of them are. Damian is surrounded by people who were molded and shaped and torn down and broken to become the monoliths that they are, and then there’s this girl who seems so at peace with herself and is constantly making quips, and it’s so foreign to him.

And she tells him that she’s in his world because she believes people are worth fighting for.

Well Transformers Prime, Transformers 1986 and IDW comics are having the first place that’s for sure

And then the second place is kind of shared by Fall of Cybertron, Exodus, Prime wars trilogy, Robots in disguise(2001) and Transformers One.

The third place goes to G1, Animated, Earthspark, Armada, War for Cybertron Netflix series, Aligned Robots in disguise, Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts and Cyberverse because I only liked some little parts of them.

And then I also saw some of the Bay movies, Victory and Headmasters and didn’t like them at all.

Separate first place for J-Decker. It is not exactly Transformers but it is a show about giant robots and I loved it

They were just waiting on Buck.

Buck, who had texted them in a since-silent group chat, asking them all to meet on their off day.

No one had responded beyond liking the message, but they all were here. All except Buck.

It wasn't like him to be late, but under the circumstances, no one was complaining. Or, at least, Ravi wasn't complaining. Eddie had pulled out his phone, and Ravi caught the tail end of a snide remark about having limited time back in LA. Hen made a face, but didn't argue.

Ravi wished he had heard more, so he knew better what to say in response. Maybe something like, Where else do you want to be? Are we not enough for you?

He looked up at the sound of intentional scuffing, someone making sure their footsteps were heard.

That also wasn't like Buck. He'd call out a greeting, or run up before they could notice and drape himself over whoever was closest. Or, at least, he used to. Ravi didn't know what this subdued version of Buck would do. Scuff his feet, apparently.

Except it wasn't Buck. It was Tommy.

Ravi could tell he wasn't the only one surprised.

Tommy hadn't been on the group chat.

Chimney set his phone down as Tommy sat. "Is Buck parking or something?"

"And I needed you here, because this all?" He gestured to all of them. "This has to stop."

jayce would love viktor so good. he'd kiss his moles ever so sweetly. he'd lay him down so gently, kissing every inch of skin, telling viktor how perfect and beautiful he is in between. every sun-warmed morning entailing viktor peacefully asleep in jayce's arms as jayce stared at him in awe. in the winters or particularly bad days, he'd massage viktor's leg and back. he'd make viktor take him to zaun and show him viktor's childhood neighborhood, his favorite places. he'd learn viktor's favorite flower and keep vases of them in the lab. when viktor fell asleep in the lab, he'd be careful in walking him to bed so his back wouldn't hurt so much in the mornings. on days he was especially exhausted though, and absolutely needed undisturbed sleep, he'd make sure viktor was as comfortable as possible: blanket, pillow, sweetmilk ready for him in the morning. viktor withdraws into himself sometimes, and jayce would respect the spaces he needs to himself, but he'd be adamant to ensure that viktor knows he isn't alone, not really, and never will be for as long as he'll have jayce. every time viktor is worried or stressed and starts ranting about how things could go wrong, jayce would pull him into his arms and assure him. he'd make viktor take a breather, murmuring praise and encouragement, before picking up the chalk again and dissecting the problem all over again. constant showers of the affection viktor lacked growing up. he'd bring viktor home to his mother, and she'd absolutely adore him and dote over him and show him the motherly care that he'd long since forgotten feels like. he'd glare at anyone who even looked at viktor wrong. he'd brush the knots out of viktor's hair where he'd tangled it from constantly twirling it. he'd push the stray locks back and kiss the furrow between his brows. he'd hang onto every single one of viktor's words, commiting them to memory. he'd read all of viktor's favorite books to understand him better. he'd cook for viktor, trying his best to follow his mother's recipes as precisely as possible and impressing him. he'd ensure viktor was well fed and taking care of himself. he'd take viktor out to the best spots in piltover to see the sunrise and sunset because he knows he never got to see it growing up in zaun; he'd lay down with viktor on the ground at night as he watched the stars and teach him all the constellations. he'd map those constellations out on viktor's body. his touch would be so adoring, so reverent; every action so coveting. viktor always believed himself to be hard to love, and yet, jayce loved him like it was breathing.

Sometimes I remember how Aomine was the one to pull Kuroko into the GoM friend group, how he yelled at Haizaki when he took food from Kuroko's plate, how he was so distraught over not being able to recieve his passes anymore, how he only uses a nickname for Kuroko, that nickname being Tetsu, how he brought him a drink since he looked tired, how he slammed a guy against the lockers for talking shit about Kuroko, how he brought a brand new pair of shoes for his rival because Kuroko asked him to, how he taught him to shoot baskets, how he understands how Kuroko functions enough to confidently tell a guy "You'll lose, because you made Tetsu mad," how he yelled encouraging words at him in a stadium full of people, how he cried during the Rakuzan game–

I really love how each realm airi haruka and shizuku were in at the beginning of the Fun!! mv represents how they were struggling pre mmj main story! like shizuku as a giantess with how she was put on a pedestal in cheerful days and ended up isolated, airi in the mirror house with her reflection of her variety tv personality and how she felt like it was holding her back from her dreams of being an idol, haruka trapped in place by the vines representing how her stage fright and how she couldnt let herself go back onstage after what happened to mai. and it just means so much to me how minori was able to reach them and get them back to their dreams of being an idol, then when even minori had her own time of doubt with the stairs crumbling beneath her the rest of them jumped down to save her immediately and she's able to fly them even higher because of their support. i love you more more jump you will always be famous to me

THE ENTIRE DRAGON AGE AMA IS A DUMPSTER FIRE

They avoided all the high-rated questions with genuine criticism (not blind hate!) and went for questions that were safer and allowed them more leeway. After that awful IGN article and that treatment of Davrin...God, just put it down. I have no faith that BioWare will be able to continue Dragon Age or Mass Effect with the respect it deserves.

Edit - They had an opportunity for genuine discussion with fans who were concerned/unhappy with the way Veilguard was -> people unhappy with the story, the marketing, the lack of 'RP' options in an RPG, etc... Instead they just doubled-down even more, avoiding those critical questions, with no real acknowledgement that fans have very reasonable problems with this game.

Some Highlights & My Initial Ramblings Below:

The Executors

"They attempt to manipulate events in the most subtle way they can manage."

So, very clear that they're not simply observers of what is happening in Thedas: they're manipulators...

"Magical Illuminati Confirmed! Lizard People Did 9:30 Dragon!!!!"

All that complexity of character -> his hatred of Orlais, his experience as a general, his relationship with Cailain, and the influence of Howe...all diminished. Any influence from a shadow cabal is too much influence - all the humanity of Loghain's choices/consequences...God, what a waste.

Not to mention what this does to other events/characters in the series -> they imply they've been intervening as far back as the magisters breaking into the golden city. I do not find this compelling! At all!

2. Solas and the Executors

Oh my god, he sounds like such a fucking Mary-Sue I'm so sick of Solas at this point -> "Actually, I know more about the Executors than anyone alive - not even the rest of the Gods know as much as me."

("I'm also, like, an Ancient Elven God, I'm responsible for the Blight and the Veil, and I kind of locked the Gods away cause they were evil - but, like, I'm really sad about it. Also the Herald of Andraste thinks I'm cute <3")

But I miss the days when not everything was about Solas. It removes so much interest and wonder in this world when the fucking egg is behind it all. I loved him as a character in DAI and now I just feel this bone deep tiredness when I see his stupid face.

3. The Fate of the Rest of the Evanuris

Yay. I'm so looking forwards to "The Return of the Elves: Electric Boogaloo 2" - it was done so well the first time!

"It was the elves all along!"

The only character with any potential to be interesting is Andruil*, but how they handled all this lore was done so shallowly and so poorly that I find it hard to give a damn anymore. Not to mention that the game literally mentions Ghilan'nain mourning Andruil - so is this a retcon/redirection/or have you confirmed that one of the most interesting members of the Evanuris' is dead?

*interesting in that she's established in lore to potentially have a tonne of really cool things attached to her (the void armour, the great weapon she has etc...). The rest of the evanuris are nowhere near as well established as she is.

4. Southern Thedas, Sociopolitical Issues, and Future Games

NOW YOU WANT TO INCORPORATE GEO-POLITCAL EXPLORATION?? You avoided any meaningful discussion like the plague in DATV but now you're acknowledging it?? OkaY. okAy.

They couldn't even give us the long-term ramifications of the mage/templar war how the hell am I supposed to believe that they will be able to pull off 'elven gods are real' etc...? For a game series that totes : your choices matter -> they have not proven that they have been able to show that in a meaningful way. They literally cleaned the slate with this game to avoid doing that.

So, what, does that mean that the Veil is never going to come down now? Or are you going to have the entirety of Thedas build themselves up again just to have the Veil fall and send things into chaos once more?

What a fatalistic, miserable outcome for Thedas -> why the fuck would anyone bother to live in Thedas if you're going to keep throwing meteorites at them? By all means, change/conflict has to happen for the series to move forwards...but this is just so miserable at this point.

(The Elder Scrolls, at least, gives people room to breathe between crisis' or sets them up in different areas of the world! Bethesda treats past installments/your decisions with greater respect than DATV does.)

Even, then, if the Veil remains up, that means that the spirits are just trapped in the Fade being miserable for the rest of existence. The entire series has been humanizing spirits, from Justice to Cole, and now they're just throwing in the towel? I guess they can stay in the fade now! Problem solved!

What do you mean the Evanuris are not a threat anymore? IN A PREVIOUS QUESTION YOU LITERALLY SAID SOME ARE STILL POTENTIALLY KICKING AROUND THE BLACK CITY?

Weakened, sure, but Solas was 'weak' in DAI. You're giving yourself an out if you decide to go back to the elves again. Please do, I'd love more content on how the elves alone fuck everything up!

5. More Southern Thedas, the Chantry, and Tevinter

Thanks for the confirmation that things in the South are so fucked up that they have to work alongside the 'Slave Capital' of the known world to rebuild!

Slavery was one of the biggest things that caused a rift between the north/south chantry system -> one of the reasons why there were exalted marches -> a uniting belief in the south is that slavery is fucked. They didn't address slavery in DATV - what hopes are there that they will do so effectively in a future game?

Don't tell me that Dorian fixes everything off screen either -> either he solves slavery off-screen or the south is being forced to work the slaver-capitol because their land is nuked and they have no ground to stand on.

I'm so thrilled.

6. Solas and the Idol / The Blight

I will never get over Solas fucking curing the Blight off-screen and no one asking questions/giving a shit. Hello?? The Hero of Ferelden would like a word with you???

So the Blight is calcified in Minrathous, at least, but everywhere further away is still fucked! Once more, the South is doomed to suffer from the long-term effects that regular blights have -> not to mention the red lyrium (which still exists according to the AMA) across the south.

I don't care; it's lame. It's a lame way to conclude the blight and I hate it. This game did not earn 'cure the blight from thedas' at all. You could have had us learn how to soothe a titan and see how that can diminish the blight but you did it this way.

Another 'magical ritual' because Solas has such a good track record with them lmao.

7. The Agents of Fen'Harel / The War with the Qun / The Crows

Turned him against the idea of being a leader???!!

Fen'harel's Call to the Elven People After the events at the Winter Palace, elves left the Inquisition under mysterious circumstances, as did elven servants across Thedas. None could say where they went, but those who believed the Inquisitor's story about Fen'Harel wondered just how large the Dread Wolf's forces were... and what the ancient elven rebel had planned. This is from the Trespasser Epilogue, Epler!

Your concept art for Joplin literally had him as a leader of a faction of elves. Just be honest that it's a retcon and you changed course - don't try to save face with this reasoning.

About the Antaam: "We needed some big mindless bad guys to fight and so we did this because we didn't want to address the Qunari War/Invasion we set up in Trespasser".

You had to canonize Sten as being alive and Arishok in order for this reasoning to work -> you didn't even come up with an alternative Arishok to take Sten's place.

Yeah, the exchange that set up the Crows we see in the game as "idealists" did not make the game. I can confirm that!

I'm sorry, "Caterina kept Illario in check?" as in, 'kept him an idealist and not the usual Crow'? The woman that beat him with a cane and starved him and his cousin to train them as Crows. Fuck off.

8. World State Discrepancies - Isabela

Outright ignores the very real criticism about the marketing from this game and World States.

"there are absolutely places where we unintentionally suggested there was a hard canon (...that Isabela is always assumed to have joined Hawke's party.)"

Unintentional?

Excuse me, you have her talk about Merrill and the Kirkwall Crew as family - that was not unintentional in the slightest. Not to mention Sten, Blackwall, Sera, and Cole are canonized as being part of your world state no matter what.

You had a story you wanted to tell - one that only fit a few world states - and you went ahead with it and disregarded those choices. Don't try and lie about this all being a big misunderstanding.

Edit - They could have taken the opportunity to address the very reasonable criticisms that people had with this game but they cherry-picked questions and avoided/minimized anything remotely critical.

They could have provided us some insight into the game development time but each time they approached the topic they settled for "we're happy with what we delivered and it was well optimized."

They had an opportunity to acknowledge that people were bothered by the handling of the lore/stories (to potentially mention they could course-correct/ rethink their plans) but instead they doubled down on everything that they did and even 'justified' some decisions. They doubled down on the Executors, Solas's changing motivations, the destruction of Southern Thedas, and the elves/Solas being at the heart of everything etc...

This AMA basically confirmed that the only reason they did what they did to the south was for a reset -> It's not a compelling or fulfilling narrative to have everything we've done reset back to ground zero off-screen. BioWare games differentiate themselves from other RPG's by their import system from previous games - it was compelling and exciting! With DATV they set the expectation that BioWare can outright throw out entire games worth of choices/build up, not solely retcon them.

Justifying your choice to water down the lore/world of your story by saying you'll address it in the 'next game' does not instill me with confidence, BioWare! It doesn't explain that lack of it in this game either!

They avoided every question that, rightfully so, pointed out the misleading comments made by devs in the pre-order period of the game:

the fact that there were only 3 imported choices from previous games was leaked by a reviewer -> BioWare was vague from the start about choices

that this game was the most 'romantic' in the series

that world states/ headcanons wouldn't be disrespected

that there are 'lore' reasons for bad darkspawn design

that there are lasting, impactful choices/consequences to be made in this game

that the lore/world was not watered or toned down

that companions are deep and you can disagree with them etc...

BioWare's behavior towards their customers in the lead up period to this games release was downright scummy. I absolutely felt misled after playing the game for myself and recalling what I read in interviews put out. While EA is undoubtedly poison, you can't hold them solely accountable for this.

I feel for the individual developers who worked on this in what was undoubtedly a toxic environment from EA - but I feel that it's pretty clear that BioWare itself has a lot of problems within and in their leadership/executives. Working for EA does not give them an excuse to mislead their customers.

also I've spent the last couple weeks reading some older historical romance novels, and my made up, wholly unverified hypothesis that in the 2000s romance authors finally grasped that the old-fashioned "no, don't! stop, you brute" etc. scenes were not really landing with audiences anymore. So they faced a conundrum about the future of the genre. Ultimately, I think they chose to quietly stop writing those heroes, and switch them out for a more sensitive model. Still dark and brooding! But with limits, often a Heart of Gold, and more general emotional intelligence.

Still, somewhere out there is a parallel universe where these authors decided to take the opposite approach---to write heroines as unhinged, cruel, impulsive, and emotionally ignorant as their heroes. I don't know if I want to live there, but I wouldn't mind a trip to their library sometime.
